This song is about being betrayed by someone very close to you. He’s saying he now sees how they were fake the whole time. And once the betrayal was revealed, he finally saw who they truly were, and then said goodbye forever.

Always fun seeing people claim with absolute certainly what the origins and meaning of this song is. Of course you are wrong, Phil said many times that it wasn't about his ex or betrayal of any kind and that it really had no meaning. Read his book.

The greatest drum drops in music history. Those of us all folks heard this song through Miami Vice. The young folks will remember it from The Hangover when Tyson was singing it. I’ve been a huge fan of Genesis and Phil since I was a child in the 80s. I was de-loved to Afghanistan in 2004 and after I got back I got to see this very tour in Oklahoma City it was a bucket list item I dreamed about since I was a child. It was worth every penny to see this legend.

I love this...I love live so much better...My first concert was Bob Segar in 1977 in Evansville Indiana and I was like 4 rows from the stage and on the shoulders of a guy I know and caught a drum stick that the drummer threw out between my fingers...they played turn the page and the sax player was up like 40 feet on top of the speakers playing the start and it was so awesome...best concert ever...I was 17 and life was good....loved that concert and I would suspect this one was just as magnificant as that one....the old school concerts were the BEST....so glad I was a teen during all of these great performers....I just wish I could have saw Phil Collins...never did...so sad.

The drums were not "hiding in the dark". The drums were on a platform below the back riser and as Phil walked toward the center of the riser, the drums were raised into position. If you watch closely, you can see the drums come up from underneath and the kit actually shakes a little when they stop rising, right before Phil sits down at the kit. This is why the crowd goes crazy as Phil makes his way into position. The drums are then lowered once the song is over. Most people also don't realize this kit has no cymbals - they simply aren't needed for the song.

The thing about music that many forget, or perhaps, ignore completely, is this; it doesn't matter what the age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender or language of the performer and/or song is. Music is about telling a story, about giving a feeling to the listeners no matter who or where they are. Music is and always will be the language of the world, a way to unite different peoples through one medium and yet there are many who just can't, or won't allow this thought to take hold.

Phil Collins' first 2 (solo) albums were, basically, about his (now: "first") divorce (the onset, the event itself and its aftermath).
Genesis' Duke also delves into it!

If you role the tape back to where Phil is standing on the middle of the stairs....watch the Guitarist reach down and hit the switch of sorts to bring the elevator with the drums up to where Phil will walk to. It just gets there as he does. Great video

I am 61. I saw Phil Collins perform this live in Jan, 1983 when I was in college at Indiana University. I have seen quite a few great concerts and this is in my top 5 for sure. Great reaction. To sing that well while playing drums that well is very difficult . Phil rocks I subscribed to give other songs you have done and: or reacted to a chance. I was also a huge Sugar Hill Gang fan and knew all the lyrics to their 1979 song Rapper’s Delight. “ Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn. If your girl starts acting up, then you take her friend”

0:27 - MIAMI VICE - In 1985, Phil Collins guest starred as a con artist in the Miami Vice episode 'Phill the Shill'. He's also appeared in movies including Hook (1991) starring Robin Williams & Dustin Hoffman, where he portrayed Inspector Good, and Buster (1988), portraying Great Train Robber, Buster Edwards. Two of his songs featured in the movie became US No.1s, 'Two Hearts', and 'A Groovy Kind of Love', which also reached No.1 in the UK charts.

Saw Genesis 3 times in the 80's, Phil 3 times in the 90's. Some of the best concerts ever. Try some of the underground stuff from the late 60's.

This entire album was written while Phil was going through a horrible divorce. You can hear the pain of it when he sings this....The fact that he can sing so clearly while absolutely destroying the drums just goes to show the amount of talent he has.

As an artist I understand where Phil was coming from when he said If he'd known it was going to be so big, he'd have done more with the drums.. elaborated more. But, we don't always as artists have a sense when less is more. And here, less is definitely more. The stripped down nature of the Drum hits makes it a visceral reaction from the narrator that makes it so memorable and palpable that everyone can instantly associate with even when not fully understanding the mysterious nature of the lyrics. It's purposed perfection with an accidental punchline that just is a miracle of music for it's composition. Phil is a legend for a reason. I'm not a fanboy when it comes to this stuff; but, as an artist I can really appreciate when someone knocks it out of the park with no return address. And this is one of those. I always hated competing with art when I was young. I just wanted to see people appreciate the work I did. If they appreciated what they saw, job done. And there is soooo much talent out there that it's a waste of time picking this or that and saying it's the greatest or belongs in a top ten. We do it anyway at times. I just see it as great art and keep the museum open while making room for more of it from wherever it comes. Nightwish, Liliac, Queen, The REO Brothers, Los Lonely Boys., Falco, Nena, and the beat goes on.

This song is about a coming confrontation because of a betrayal. The song builds throughout and culminates that awesome beat drop that signifies the time of this confrontation and the release of all the building emotions.

He is a fantastic actor and he is acting out this song as he stalks the stage. He is stalking the person whose downfall is coming (ex wife I believe) and letting them know, he is waiting for this and he remember EVERYTHING they did to him. When he is walking up the stairs on the line "I remember, I remember don't worry...." and he turns to look into the camera on the second "remember" and glares, it gives chills. He is an ICON

Miami Vice gave this song its "second wind."
That show (BECAUSE of its "current music centricity") did that for a great deal of '80s songs.
    "Lunatic Fringe" by Red Rider
hit AGAIN because of Michael Mann's use of it in Miami Vice.
..."undercurrent"/barely noticed tracks such as: Russ Ballard's 1981 tune: "Voices" got additional life from its use in the program, as well.
Songs that were current-but-relatively "new" on commercial radio (not Rock- or Soul/R&B- oriented radio stations!), like:
    The Tubes' "She's A Beauty"
    and
    John Waite's (breakthrough single)
    "Missing You"
also got a powerful "bump" from appearing in the show!
[And let's recall, Miami Vice didn't hit the screen until the Fall (start of the new season) of 1984!]
Of course: Jan Hammer's Theme music was the "jumping off hard" point for that show & that time!
[I think Jan Hammer finally "broke" the "Mike Post stranglehold" on "TV Show Theme Song" dominance (which Mike Post & Pete Carpenter, definitely, held in the '70s & into the early '80s!). 🤷]

Phil the icon! He’s speaking to the man that he found in bed with his wife!
“If you were drowning, I would not lend a hand!“ “I’ve seen your face before, but I don’t know if you know who I am?“ “So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you’ve been, it’s all been a pack of lies.“ I can feel it coming in the air, he’s like a madman with that evil calm before the storm! Amazing. Love to you also BP.🤍✌️
