Vincent Van Gogh is a painter from the 1800's and this song is about him and one of his paintings called The Starry Night. Suffered from mental illness and died by suicide at 37. Wasn't appreciated during his lifetime and his paintings got recognition only after he died. Vincent” by Don McLean was reportedly Tupac’s favorite song.
Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. He created over 2,000 artworks, most of them in the last two years of his life. His work was only beginning to gain critical attention before he died from a self inflicted gunshot at age 37. During his lifetime, only one of his paintings, "The Red Vineyard" was sold.
Vincent Van Gogh is a world famous painter from the 1800's. The song is about his painting Starry Night. He also cut off his own ear. Later he shot himself in the chest, his last words were "The sadness will last forever."
Definitely find that video. You will see the visual inspirations of the lyrics as the music plays. Actually, when I’ve heard the song over the years, in some places I’ve envisioned different art pieces than the video displays, but that just highlights the genius of Vincent’s body of work. Song and art together is truly moving.
Home Free did collaborations with Don McLean himself for his two most popular songs, this one, Vincent and American Pie. This was, for his celebration of his star on walk of fame, I believe in 2021.❤ Both iconic songs, poetic and story telling songs!!❤
Kris, you are so blessed to have a chance to see a Van Gogh painting for the first time. His art was painting, but it's beauty is as profound as music.
Love your channel. Van Gogh is actually a painter. Look at his painting called "Starry, starry night". Yes, sadly, he committed suicide. He did beautiful works, as has Don McLean of "American Pie" fame. Keep up the great reviews!
Vincent Van Gogh was an artist 1800's - my personal favorite (and favorite of Don McLean's songs)- he was never appreciated in his lifetime but his works now are priceless - he did take his own life and suffered from depressive episodes in his lifetime. I saw an exhibition of his works a fantastic experience - If you know his works which Don obviously did a lot of the lyrics described either a particular painting or the colours and themes of his artwork. I have a book of some of his many letters to his brother - he wrote beautifully - not dark - he had a beautiful soul if you read his writings (letters) - it makes me love his work all the more.
Could you be thinking of Edgar Allan Poe, perhaps? He was a fantastically dark poet and storyteller. Van Gogh was a Dutch impressionist painter. I'm sure you've seen some of his paintings at some point. The paintings Van Gogh created while living with mental illness are a beautiful dichotomy.
I do believe this is going to tug at your heartstrings Mr. Kaliko. In my opinion, you were spot on when you mentioned "Maybe they won't listen the way that he wants them to". A talented painter who didn't paint like other painters painted. He had a very different style.
Vincent Van Gogh was not a write/poet, but was a painter of pictures that brought him fame and fortune only after his demise. This song was played for Tupac on his deathbed as it was a favorite of his.
Vincent was a Dutch painter and one of several artists from the mid through late 1800s that was painting in a style called Impressionism, that wasn't highly recognized or appreciated as a legitimate or accepted style of painting. Impressionism is just what it means. A tree might not look a real tree, for example, but would have all the markers that let your eyes tell you it was a tree. Because of the style of painting up until this time was closer to Realism, this new style didn't win much favor with art galleries. Through galleries an artist would get a name and their work would become recognized, and they would have a chance to sell their work. Vincent's work was among those who was continually rejected. Rejection for a mentally unstable person such as Vincent, threw him deeper into despair. He took his life. It was his brother's widow who held on to Vincent's painting and finally found a place for it. Vincent is known for being the painter who cut off his own ear, but that isn't an accurate description as he only cut off part of his ear. It gets exaggerated because self-portraits of Vincent after the injury shows his whole ear area bandaged over. But it would be very hard to bandage an ear before adhesive bandages were around. Don Mclean's song is a loving tribute to him. It is one of the most beautiful and sad love songs of all time in my opinion.
Don McLean also wrote American Pie, a song you have to have heard if you grew up in the United States. He recorded a 50th anniversary of the release with Home Free. He also recently recorded a new version of Vincent in connection with Home Free. A couple of great collabs.
Now, you must react to Don McLean's "American Pie," often proclaimed one of the top five songs of the 20th Century. American Pie is the song of our generation and is enshrined in the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry. The lyrics were considered so significant that we studied them in lit class and the song won McLean a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It's 8 and a half minutes long, but it is definitely worth a listen.
Vincent van Gogh had a painting çalled starry starry night!! He cut his ear off at one time and had major depression. And yes, he did u alive himself! I love his paintings
Not a big fan of our education system (especially since much of it has fallen under woke/leftist influence), but in fairness, that system also gave you this masterpiece of a song.
Vincent abd his brother Theo did exchange many letters, a book Dear Theo, has many that survived. There is also a movie. No poetry in them that i remember. But its been lots of years since i read them
Please read up on Vincent Van Gogh, painter Don McLean not only wrote and sang this masterpiece but other music that is iconic in the industry and culture such as American Pie. Thanks fior sharing.
Vincent van Gogh was a painter. Starry Starry is one of his most famous paintings. You can see it at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. If you can't get there in person you can see it on their website.
Don Mccleen wrote this. I think others have told you the basis of the song about vanGough. Dons song is poetry in music. One of the most beautiful ever written.
Don Mclean is a big star he just remade this song and American Pie with Home Free you should check them out. In their version of Vincent, you will see some of his artwork that you have seen here and there all your life. Enjoy
Don describes in detail many of Vincent’s paintings. Some people don’t believe he actually killed himself but might have covered for someone else. There have been documentaries about that. Being an artist, his art became worth a lot but not until after he died.
🌿⚘️🌿⚘️🌿⚘️🌿⚘️🌿⚘️🌿⚘️🌿 Hi Krizz, There is another Beautiful Song written by Don McClean, Sung by: Elvis Presley "AND I LOVE YOU SO" (4:01 min) Slide Show, Black Leather.
Not sure who you're confusing him with, but I'd sure like to know. Edgar Allen Poe maybe? He definitely wrote some dark stuff. Both have three names and in America at least, their last names rhyme. Either way, it's a beautiful song, isn't it? I always have to mention the Dr. Who Vincent Van Gogh episode. This song hurts my heart and the museum scene helps for some inexplicable reason. :)
The whole American Pie album is a work of art. Everyone should listen to and think deeply about The Grave and what it means. Also Ren is due to release a new tale called Vincent’s Tale, which I can’t bloody wait for
Van Gogh was a painter, not a poet. He suffered with mental health issues, and spent time in an asylum. There's a great video on youtube that someone made using the studio recording of this song over a slideshow of Van Gogh's paintings you should check out.
Oops, not poetry ... painter. Famous for not only his art but his cutting off his ear and death. You will recognize his work when you check it out. Don Mclean is famous for American Pie. You should check it out.
There is a UK comedian named Freddie Star who does a comedy routine centred on this song. It is very clever and very funny. I thought you might like to look at it after seeing the original.
Mental health is not a new phenomenon luckily its more understood these days, and medications were not around back then. anyways one of the most beautiful songs written and sheer poetry from don👌
Krizz, he is an artist, and yes he did commit suicide. There is a video of this song. set to a landscape of his famous paintings as poetically described in this song. It will give you some perspective. If I had to choose a favorite song of all my decades, it would be this. Give it another chance.
Don teamed up with Home Free for a second time to do Vincent. I had dreamed 3 or 4 times that Home Free did this. Vincent Van Gogh was a mentally ill Dutch painter.
I guess it would be hard to really get it if you didn't have any idea who Vincent was. I had read enough to know very well who he was in 1971 when the song came out.
😡 .. famous painter : not famous poet ..... Geeez Louis .. During the reaction , you could take your phone and google Vincent Van Gogh .. it would take 10 seconds and you would have a much clearer understanding of the song. Do a tiny bit of homework.
As I mentioned in another comment, I love hearing from you all, I love learning, being educated about things I may not know and that’s ok!! But it’s amazing to see all the feedback I get in the comments

No backing band, no backing track, no backing vocals, no auto-tune... just pure, raw talent..... one man, one guitar, and one voice....
💯
Vincent Van Gogh is a world famous painter from the 1800's. The song is about his painting Starry Night. He also cut off his own ear. Later he shot himself in the chest, his last words were "The sadness will last forever."
His poetry was in his paintings.
🔥
Someone made a video that sets the song to Van Gogh's paintings. Check that one out. It helps to know a bit about his tragic life, also.
Definitely find that video. You will see the visual inspirations of the lyrics as the music plays. Krizz, check out Don and Home Free singing this together surrounded by Van Gogh’s most famous paintings. It is GORGEOUS.
This is about Vincent Van Gogh and his paintings
Kris, you are so blessed to have a chance to see a Van Gogh painting for the first time. His art was painting, but it's beauty is as profound as music.
I had the good fortune to visit The Van Gogh Mudseum in Amsterdam. There are no words. Also, he painted more than one Starry Night painting.
Don McLean 's voice inspired the song "Killing Me Softly", first made famous by Roberta Flack, then later by the Fugees.
You know the painting Starry Night. When you see it you'll know. ❤️✌️
Don McLean is still active in the music business...he wrote some beautiful stuff... "And I Love You So" is another really nice one.

He cut his ear off at one time and had major depression. And yes, he did u alive himself! I love his paintings
This song still gives me an emotional reaction. Don McLean included the names of Van Gogh's paintings in this song.
I saw in an interview that Tupac's sister played this in the hospital the night he died. It was his favorite song...
Wow
He painted a picture of a wheat feild, and the next day shot himself in that feild
Great Reaction 👍🙏💯😎
Thanks 💯
I hope you watch one of the videos that demonstrates Vincent’s art work. (Paintings) Don mentioned many of his paintings…

If you like this i believe you will like his version with Home Free also. I like the added harmonies added from Home Free. He is a legend. Either way.
Well...his art was poetry even though it was on canvas. Watch the movie, "Vincent and Theo." Heartbreaking.

You should check out your buddy Black Pegasus’s reaction. He didn’t know the backstory.
Watch his music video with Van Gogh's paintings.
Poet with a paintbrush.
Whether he committed suicide or not is controversial. There is a very interesting film, Loving Vincent, that explores this.
This was Tupacs favorite song.
Vincent also cut off his ear from mental illness

Agreed but I do enjoy reading the comments and getting feedback from yall!! I feel like you all provide me with so much info and it’s amazing
Your producer is stupid, I’d fire him!
Not poet. Painter.
You showed your ignorance AGAIN!!! You need a better education....your POV is way to narrow. He was one of the world's best artist...Not a POET
Not everyone has the same life experience any educated person would know that
Dude. Lighten up. We're all dumb about different things. Half of being smart is knowing what you're dumb at and avoid doing it.
Well said, we're all ignorant to some things@@gkiferonhs
