  • My recent interview with Oxford professor Dr. Ian Goldin, the former vice president of the World Bank, and a veteran observer of globalization. Six years ago, he predicted that the next economic crash would be caused by a pandemic.

The dear professor makes a rather illogical statement when he states that it took a long time to identify the pandemic. An epidemic is the fetus of a pandemic. In the beginning there is the moment of fertilisation. As we know not all fertilisations end in a embryo.
Then he goes on to saying that "we" - who ever that is - must get better at identifying pandemics. Given that a pandemic is a result of a larger number of people getting infected, this statement doesn't make sense.
In a sense it feels comforting that even high profile academics lack precision when expressing their ideas. However, given the current panic situation, this is also rather disconcerting. Given that politicians now use and abuse scientists from all disciplines to push a political agenda.
