This week, Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Raman Kirpal, Jayashree Arunachalam and Prateek Goyal are joined by journalist Faye D’Souza.
On the polls in Maharashtra, Faye says there is “a lot of goodwill” for the Thackerays. “Eknath Shinde does not enjoy that goodwill because of what was done to the Thackerays.” She adds that there was confusion about election symbols because of the split within the NCP and the Shiv Sena. “A lot of voters did not know the difference between their symbols.”
The panel then discusses the elections in Delhi and the alleged Swati Maliwal assault case. Raman breaks down the arithmetic of Delhi polls. “In 2019, the BJP’s margin of victory was 25 percent and above.” Abhinandan says that the coming together of the AAP and the Congress is “statistically not enough” to defeat the BJP in the national capital.
On the Porsche car crash incident in Pune, Jayashree says the story is getting traction because it “appeals very much to India’s upper middle class sensibilities”. Talking about the bail granted to the accused, she adds that all said and done, “we should not lose sight of the fact that any juvenile should get bail”.

I love how Abhinandan was wrong about where every single Journalist of NL was, was wrong on where the next member was going to in UK, wrong about the Program of Fay D'Souza and was still super chill 😂😂😂
As a mental health professional, and having worked with juvenile delinquents, I seriously felt that even in the Nirbhaya case, the delinquent who got away shudve been tried as an adult. Any form of psychometric assessment can be used to differentiate between mental and chronological age. So simply put someone's chronological age cud be 17 but mental age cud be 19, which wud be confirmed by tests. Such juveniles ought to be treated as adults n tried accordingly.
Faye was damn right when she said any other not rich or influential kid wud never get bail. Remand homes are supposed to rehabilitate but they traumatize . They are hell holes n i can go on n about that.
And in high profile cases , especially, parents of such teenagers shud be tried too. 90% of all issues arise cos parents are not fit to be parents. Just cos u can biologically produce, dsnt mean ur mentally n emotionally fit to raise kids. Parenting dsnt come naturally, atleast not all aspects. its a skill that's needs learning n ideally training.

Truth is, the Pune Porsche case and the Swati Maliwal case has helped the media to get the spotlight out of the Prajwal Revanna case.
Guys please find out the whole truth before discussing the Pune case. Two years ago, Agarwal's older son (juvenile's brother) had injured many people in an accident. The whole family is full of repeat offenders. Juvenile spent 69k ₹ (not 48k) that night. The family tried to pin this on the driver. Cops were allegedly bribed to botch up the case and go easy on the drunk juvenile. His alcohol test was done 8 hrs after the accident (the report of which is STILL unavailable)
Yep, this seem to be delinquent repeat behavior. The boy should be tried as an adult and the entire family should be tried for prevention of justice
We keep paying tax, government keeps spending it. We vote in this smeltering heat and the politicians roam around the country in their expensive cars.
And spend on buying MLAs. Modi has made mockery of the country

Abhinandan and the lady are simply smartasses as well as jackasses while the guy from pune explaining the case is providing such a reality check to these guys. Kudos to him! Reak journalism is done by the guy explaining the case instead of bickering by these hosts

Also as a woman it does matter to me that women's issues are not taken seriously, not only during elections , but usually just never. It's like woh mudda hi nahi hota.
Outraging the modesty of women is such a mild way to put it . Exploitation, sexual crimes amd everything against women is soul shattering/ crushing. I dint sleep for nights post Nirbhaya. I cudnt believe something like that cud ever happen , let alone a woman having to go through it. It still sends shivers down my spine. And using women's issues to even say that political parties are serious about them are a joke. Jis desh mein bolna padta hai, campaign chalana padta hai "beti bachao, beti padao" speaks volumes! And they forgot to add.. betiyon ko humse hi bachana padega....

Such bad takes form the panel on the Porsche Car Crash issue: First, i agree with Abhinandan that this case has been picked by the Godi outrage media to divert its audience attention from real issue and politics.
This case, like many that you see on the news highlights 3 main problem law and order: 1. preferential treatment for the rich and powerful, 2. Juvenile Justice ( i.e. should a juvenile be tried as an adult) and 3. Poor laws to punish such incidents. Looking at it outside the scope of this is just reactionary outrage.
Now my 2 cents on incident and panel's take on it, the panel went on about punishing the parent etc. Now it is clear the parent had spoiled the kid, but has done nothing illegal here. If you want to hold the parent responsible, buying anexpensive car for their child is not illegal in this country or any other country in the world. The parent did the most responsible thing here buy hiring a driver for the car. Now the debate if such expensive super car should have been bought is beside the point. From what i read the the driver was with them and it was the kid who took the key from the driver. In my opinion, the parent was responsible and did not hand over the key to the kid. The responsibility lies on the boy and the pub which served Alcohol to under-aged kids. The boy should be tried as an adult .
If anything we should be outraged at our justice system that it doesnt have the provision to try Juvenile as adult in such cases of gross negligence and misdemeanor.
A 17 year old cannot register a car. Even a temporary registration requires a purchase deed and I suspect one of the parents' name will be on the document. If that is the case, they can be named as party to the case.
@@SheshankReddyS Yes, but there is no proof to suggest to the parents allowed the kid to drive the car. Even on the day, the driver was with them. Hence in my opinion parents behaved responsibly with the way they handled the situation and its the Kid who is responsible for the incident, on the matter of the car.
@@pseudonym9215 Ownership of the vehicle makes them responsible, even if it is from negligence. That is why the father ran away immediately. He knew he was liable to be arrested.

But even as an enthusiastic news laundry fan, really hated how some of you keep switching to hindi when one of your co-anchors (Jayashri) who’s sitting right in the same episode doesn’t know hindi, despite all of you being perfectly comfortable in English. AND you did this even after Jayashri called some of you out sometime in the middle of the same episode. While I personally am fluent in Hindi, this was so hard to watch when I was sat thinking about how uncomfortable your co-anchor must be feeling.
I absolutely adore Atul Chaurasia and other folks from NL who deliver high quality hindi language coverage and analysis. But this edition of hafta seems to clearly be based in english. A few references, phrases , expressions here and there in Hindi is totally fine, and I’d say even enrich the show. But switching to hindi for an extended period to the point where even your own teammate can’t understand is just not a good look. Do better!
