The enemy pilot was able to do that because it was a 5th gen aircraft which has vector thrusting. That’s why they were constantly talking about going up again at 5th Generarion aircraft.

I believe that the correct term for what the enemy aircraft did is called aerial break dancing. At least that's what it looked like. Pretty remarkable maneuver.

    • @donkoltz1
      @donkoltz1 4 місяці тому +1

Due to their use of thrust vectoring in all axis, Russian 4th and 5th (arguably 4.5) gen fighters are the only modern fighters who can exhibit post-stall yaw control, allowing the maneuver that was used to dodge the missile that Mav and Goose fired at him. Not even the F-22 or F-35 can do this maneuver, however the effectiveness and usefulness of this characteristic is debatable at best. But it looks awesome.

Maverick did get several promotions since the first film. He was a Lieutenant (03) in the original Top Gun. Now he's a Captain (06). The line about him not being able to get a promotion is referring to him having stopped at Captain instead of continuing on to one of the Admiral ranks. And it's because he disobeys orders and doesn't follow the rules, but also because he enjoys flying and Admirals don't get to fly anymore.

They also did the ‘passing of the torch’ very well without having the older generation be a shell of himself. If only this movie could’ve came out the same time as Disney/Star Wars. lol. Because they definitely could’ve taken some notes from this movie. Haha.

I don't want to give too much away because I hope these girls will watch all of them but to say all of almost an entire movie franchise is garbage is a bit too quick to judge and not really fair. It also suggests that you might have had a bias because I can't see how 4 or 5 movies in a row could ALL be trash. That just doesn't add up for me.@@x_mau9355

7:01, Fun fact Ed Harris here playing Admiral Caine and Glen Powell who played Hangman have both portrayed real life American space pioneer John Glenn in two separate other movies. The films were The Right Stuff and Hidden Figures and covered the early days of the American space program. The former told the story from the perspective of the original astronauts. The latter told the story from the perspective of 3 young Black women who functioned as high level mathematicians used to calculate flight plans.
Another fun fact, it's very ironic that Ed Harris is playing an Admiral who wants to replace human pilots with drones. Just before this movie came out he portrayed a misanthropic billionaire who funds a futuristic amusement park for 1%ers in a tv series called Westworld. In the Westworld amusement park, the ultra rich can live out their most base and perverse fantasies utilizing robot extras. The robotic extras are practically indistinguishable from real people. Eventually the robotic extras began to replace some of the guest. The show has an extremely dark and apocalyptic storyline.

Such a great reaction and such an amazing movie!
The amusing thing for me that almost no one seems to get is that Hangman is Maverick as he would have been if he had been flying one of the typical single-seat fighters instead of the two-seat F-14s used in the original Top Gun. The main thing that kept Maverick from being what Hangman was is that Mav always had Goose, who was his conscience in some ways, riding brakes on Mav's worst impulses and making them not so bad. Mav was responsible to and for Goose, and since Goose was his only family Mav usually held himself in check so he wouldn't let Goose down. Hangman didn't have a back seater to be responsible to and for, so he could go all out to prove he was the best he could be and better than everyone else, which justly earned him his callsign: because he'd always hang you out to dry to prove you weren't as good as he was. Luckily, and thankfully, Hangman learned the important lesson about teamwork through Mav, who uniquely understood Hangman's driven personality. Hangman's character development was a very well done part of the movie too.
In an early script, Hangman was to be Ice's son. I'm glad they scrapped that.
In the F-18 scenes, professional military pilots were doing the actual flying, but the back seat cockpits were set up to look like the real thing. The tech advances for getting us inside the cockpit with the actor were amazing! And the actors had additional duties to their usual acting as they had to test and make sure the cameras were set and focused properly, that their makeup was good, and that the shots were as near perfect as possible. The director had the toughest time since all he could do was stand around and wait until the day's flying was done, then collect all the day's filming out of the onboard camera systems and take it to watch for the first time then and make notes for the next day's flying.
The actors actually had to go through an intensive training program to prepare them for flying in the fighters. I imagine there was some vomit hosed out of the cockpit after some of those maneuvers. Even though the actors, from what I remember, were never taken above 4G, that's nothing to sneeze at. Especially over time. I know the Fury 325 roller coaster at Carowinds near where I grew up in Charlotte, NC is said to max out at around 4Gs, that's just for a short period of time.
The WWII plane Cruise was working on at the beginning and flying at the end of the movie is his own personal plane that he is licensed to fly. He took members of the cast and crew up in it for fun in between work. That had to be a blast.
Val Kilmer, of course, had been fighting throat cancer in real life, but it was important to have him in this movie and he wanted to be there. His voice in the scenes was a programmed synthesized voice, but it was perfectly his voice as it might be. It was so good to see them as such close friends, and to know that Ice had constantly been Mav's guardian angel, keeping him in the service no matter what Mav did to get himself dismissed. And it showed a lot of how well Ice really understood Mav, and explains a lot of Mav's behaviors in the early movie.
Mav is basically suicidally depressed when the movie starts, but he's not the suicidal type, so he looks for situations where he can go out doing what he does best, but he fights to survive anyway because that is his nature. Ignoring how he feels (typical man, I know) he focuses on something else that he can control: flying. All Mav has is the service. He has no family. Even Goose's family he's not close to, though we only learn why as the movie advances. The Navy and the people he works with, best shown in Hondo, are the only family he has. So he pushes beyond Mach 10 because the project is going to be shut down and he'll lose the team/family he's been working with and, knowing as he does that Ice has been fighting cancer, he is aware that his long-term guardian angel might not be able to keep him where he needs to be. His time is running out, and he's well aware of that, so if he stays in pure Maverick mode and pushes juuust a bit more, and a bit more again, then maybe he can go out doing what he loves before that is taken away from him too. So he does. But he survives. And his guardian angel is still able to shift him back to someplace he needs to be. And, whether this was Ice's grand plan knowing who all from Pete's history was there or not, Mav ends up where he needs to be to reestablish a will to live beyond the military. Reestablishment of his old family with Rooster. Rediscovery and, much more importantly, a new appreciation of an old flame (mentioned but never seen in the original movie). And suddenly Mav has every reason to not die in the cockpit. So, of course, he must go and do something that could very easily make him die in the cockpit.
In a Hollyweird full of shallow and dull movies and shows with shallow, poorly done scripts and no actual thought behind them and shallow, unrealistic characters who only change in shallow ways if at all, a movie of this great depth made me so happy to see. I can watch it again and again and love it still. So very well done. For all the concerns I've had for Tom Cruise's weirdnesses in the past, he is absolutely a glorious hero for making this movie happen.

The enemy pilot that performed a crazy maneuver was not a maverick 2.0. The enemy fighter jet is a newer generation fighter that has way more maneuverability than the f-18. The enemy fighter jet has thrust vectoring which allows for extremely tight turns which is why he was able to swing back and get on their tail extremely fast.

there is a theory going around that is not confirmed or denied by the director of the movie. All he said was that he likes the theory when heard about it. The story goes that nobody who ejects at mach 10 (thats 12348km/h or 7672,69miles/h) is going to survive that. So in this Theory Maverick dies in that prototype plane. And all we see as the rest of the movie is playing out in his mind in the last split seconds before death - he going on a final impossible mission, paying Iceman a last visit and coming to terms with Gosses Son. All those loose ends that he had no time to resolve , he resolves for himself in his final moments.

When you think about it, Hangman was a lot like Maverick and Rooster was more like Iceman (and of course Goose). I think Maverick chose Rooster because of this. Hangman was talented, fearless, cocky and seemed like he wasn't a team player; yet proved he was by saving the day in the end. I loved Phoenix in this movie. She was actually the best pilot, and she knew everyone's strength's and weaknesses.

Because of nostalgia (the first Top Gun came out when I was a teenager), I will likely always love the original more, but this is the objectively better film.
Great reaction as always, Ladies. Cheers and salutations from Canada. 🥃☮❤

"Put that in your Pentagon budget" that's his career down the pan. The little boy in the diner only said one word but it made the right impact. Remember though a navy captain is the equivalent of an army full colonel. So for all his disobeying orders he's not doing too badly. Hangman's face when Maverick is introduced renders words unnecessary. Considering the deck crew on the carrier are not actors but serving sailors doing the job they are trained for they deserve respect for that. Miles Teller plays his part part so well, that said so do the rest of the cast.

A little trivia. In the first Top Gun, Maverick rode a Kawasaki GPZ 900R or simply Ninja 900, which was one of the fastest motorcycles on the market at that time. After the movie, the company saw a huge spike in sales for that bike. In this movie, he is on the Kawasaki Ninja H2R, which is one of the fastest motorcycles on the market today.

The actor that played "ICEMAN" Val Kilmers really does have throat cancer and needs to use an electronic device to be able to talk. For the movie they had to use the actors own son for the voice of "ICEMAN" because fortunately his voice is very close to how his father's voice was when he was in the first "TOP GUN".

Penny Benjamin is mentioned in Top Gun a few times by Goose and his wife. She is the Admiral's daughter he has taken up in the jet. It isn't key to the first film but they used it for the love interest in the second.

You two are so lucky to see these movies back to back on first watching. Love your reactions. If you want to start a collection of Tom Cruise movies, you have a major task in front of you. He goes back to 1981. Those were supporting roles in '81. "Taps" would be preferable to watch over "Endless Love". His leading roles really took off with "Risky Business".

41:40 - These "fireworks" are called flares. There are 2 types of counter-measures, "flares" and "chaff". Flares are used for heat-seeking missiles as they burn hotter than the engines. So they throw off the missile by producing a bunch of heat sources. Chaff is made up from hundreds of pieces of metal that sprays out like confetti. Chaff is used for radar-guided missiles.

Hang Man is Maverick; leaving your wing man is a Maverick move. Not Ice...
Rooster is Ice... Text book flying and never leave his wing man.
Maverick in the 1st movie was sort of a dog. He was having sex with Penny (the Admiral's daughter). Then he went into the women's bathroom to try and nail his flight instructor Charie.
I am glad they did not have that parallel in this movie.

Girls, I think it's actually totally fine that she wasn't mentioned. He was like 20 something when he met her, she was supposed to be maybe 30? Now he's 37 years older and since she's not in the movie, it obviously didn't work out. Which means, he doesn't really think about her at all anymore. Which is totally realistic, especially when this movie shows us time frame of about 3 weeks? How many times you thought of your ex from long time ago in the last 3 weeks? 😛 Luckily, they mentioned Penny in the first movie, so for the second movie they were able to use the name and make up a story of their on and off relationship so she's not just some random replacement for Charlie, she's special for him.

17:42 - Ah, young kids, forgetting a cardinal rule of the military: "Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young". Maverick telling them 200 was a lot of push ups was not a complaint. It was a warning.

There wasn’t really a role for Charlie and no reason to mention her. Tom Cruise said he wanted to acknowledge Top Gun enough to fill the back story and Maverick could stand on its own, but not relive Top Gun. That’s also, at least partly, why Meg Ryan (Rooster’s mother) wasn’t in Maverick. IMHO it can stand on it’s own but without knowing the first movie a lot of subtleties are missed. For example, I’ve seen many people who didn’t get the Penny connection.
