    As to filters getting stuck, this may be due to how smooth the thread in the filter has been cut (at microscopic level) and its adhesion potential to the opposite side, the thread in the camera. The manufacturer here claims brass and its inherently smooth thread cuts will not get stuck. This has been my not-researched-prejudice over the past decades too.

    Mr Abbot;
    I had a dream that you moved into my town, where there was an RC Hobby store. Somehow you killed the owners, burried them underneath the store, and transformed the business into
    Abbott's Photo & Accessories.
    You kept a few RC supplies in your store so as to not blow your cover, and turned your business into a photo mafia operation.
    Anyone that disagreed with you, your men would pay a visit to them at night, and by dawn, they too were buried underneath your store.
    One person came into your store, and said Tony & Chelsey were better and they were never coming back. You killed them too!
    When I woke up, i sat up and pondered this real life, realistic dream, amd said to myself, "That Was AWESOME" 🤣
    If you ever turn into a psycho photographer mafia man, please hire me! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Thanks for another great review! I was wondering if you would consider doing a Sony 70-200 f2.8 master review. It seems to me that all the typical people who do lens reviews on youtube haven't done a detailed review of it. I found conflicting reviews on its sharpness some people saying its amazing best 70-200, some people saying QC issues so its a toss up and others saying its just not sharp compared to Nikon & Canon versions. Such difficult choices, of course it'd be nice to own them all. I'm interested in the variable ND's but how bad would stacking a CP atop that be? Part of the reason I find the variable ND's such an attractive option is for some subjects you want an exact shutter speed AND in addition you can dial back the ND to a lesser setting so you're able to focus your lens easier. I find I'm always removing my ND to focus and in cold weather at an icy waterfall dropping the filter is always a risk. Sometimes more options makes it harder to make the right choice. Thank you as always for the review, these look worth the cost for sure.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому +1

      It would depend on the lens whether or not additional vignette was a factor, but optically these filters seem sound enough to handle the stacking.

    Thanks for your very articulate review. New to filters hence the time lapse from the making of your video!!! These filters really look the business although quite expensive. My question is - again remembreing I'm new to filters - if I purchased say the 10stop ND combined with the circular polarizer, is it possible to use one without the other? For example, I may want just to use the polarizer to decrease glare and reflection but don't want to use the ND part....is that possible?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому +1

      You might want to get their ND64/CP-L filter if you want a mix of the two. You can stack filters like that, but it is possible to introduce mechanical vignette depending on how wide the focal length is.

    Apparent sharpness can increase because of great polarization, as it takes some of the spurious (from detail resolution point of view) reflections in the subject away.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      That's exactly right. I find that it increases APPARENT contrast, which boosts APPARENT resolution.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI- everybody recognizes fog - even when they are not able to see the actual water vapour particles with the naked eye. That kind of diffusion happens a lot in the atmosphere and on surfaces. When it is relatively mild we might call it haze. On clear winter days when there is little moist in the air, you can see proverbially "forever". Cold air cannot carry moist well. When the diffusion is gone on that clear day we get sharper, more detailed, photographs. The polarizing filter takes some of the haze away when it is not a clear day. The same way as it takes reflections away from the surface of water and all of a sudden we can look through the surface - thus revealing details that were (almost) invisible before. With something nearby, we are not inclined to call the polarization effect "increase of sharpness", but the detail gain at distance we would.

    Dustin, I'm not a big collector of filters but one of the few I own is an ND1000, which obviously to use you have to pre-focus then screw it on and snap your photo. Is an ND64 generally light enough for the camera to still auto focus? (My guess is not, but who knows if you have a lens attached whose aperture is greater than 2.0.)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому

      What camera, Randy? It obviously depends on the lighting conditions, but some cameras can still focus these days even with an ND1000 attached. I went out and shot handheld for an afternoon with the ND64/PL attached (though that's not really the purpose). I had no AF problems with an a7R3.

  • @c-wliu7388
    @c-wliu7388 4 роки тому

    Great review, I was wondering did you get a chance to compare the difference between using a ND64/PL vs. ND64 + Circular Polariser stacked?
    I am trying to decide whether to go down the path of CP + ND64 + ND 1000 vs CP + ND64PL + ND1000 (I think I will always want a stand alone CP for other usage)
    I shoot a lot on 16-35mm on full frame, would the stacking cause a lot of vignetting at 16mm?
    Cheers

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

      It's hard to predict how much vignetting will be on a particular lens without testing it. I do generally prefer the hybrid filter rather than stacking for that reason, though.

    This review has come at just the right time, I'm looking for a new 77mm circular polariser, but i'm wondering if there is much difference between, say a B&W or a Carl Zeiss filter that have their special coatings compared to this new Quartzline filter?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому +1

      I would say the QuartzLine might possibly be better with the ND1000 (due to having no color casts), but as long as you have a really good clarity, slim polarizer, a good B+W would be fine. Frankly I wasn't blown away by the Zeiss filters. They are good, but I would pick these over them.

  • @jpdj2715
    @jpdj2715 5 років тому

    It is impressive for the manufacturer to talk about some factor like 64 or 1,000, but it makes more sense to use EV. The way we talk about photography is not in linear number like these factors but in "stops" (which EV do too). 64 times means 6 stops or EV and 1,000 times light reduction means 10 EV. If we had to expose a scene at F/11 with 1/125 sec for a correct exposure at ISO 100, then 6 stops reduction means we can change F/11 into F/1.4, or go from 1/125 sec to 1/2 sec. If you wanted the background blur of 1.4, or the motion blur of 1/2 sec, you would have to set ISO to about 1.5 - impossible, so you have to use a reduction filter.
    As to price, I wonder how this comes about. Look up what an 11 element Nikon Z 35/1.8S costs, its weight and construction - and compare. Not sure these prices are justifiable - except that people are buying it.

      I find that I struggle with that sometimes when I'm reviewing something outside the scope of my normal reviews.

      Hmmm, that's a very broad accusation without any evidence to support the claim. Can you cite any actual evidence that this is what I have done? The one flaw that I found was the price, which I stated clearly on multiple occasions.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI It is not an accusation - it is my impression. Furthermore, I don´t see any reason to use a filter in photography (with two or three expeditions).

      Fair enough. I don't often use them myself, but I do really like using a CP-L for nature photography and a ND1000 filter is pretty much a must-own if you plan on doing long exposures.
