- This video is all about the hierarchy of British supermarkets/grocery stores! We LOVE talking about shops and every British person is fiercely loyal to their chosen supermarket. We discuss all of them from M&S, Waitrose and Sainsburys all the way down to Iceland, Aldi and Lidl. Eating at the Wegmans Pub, their Burger Bar, and other restaurant areas inside the supermarket are great. Not all have all the restaurant options.
Also, Amazon now owns Whole Foods.

In the U.S. we call Whole Foods-"Whole Paycheck".
That's why we prefer to go to Trader Joe's. ;)
In the last few months Whole Foods was bought by Amazon, which apparently has plans to get into bricks-and mortar food. My guess is that it will go somewhat downmarket.
I was talking with my nutritionist a couple of weeks ago, and when she referenced a yogurt drink that she liked that she said was a little pricey, I asked her if it was found at Whole Paycheck. Made her giggle. :-)
Bob Thomas in Austin??? I think I had heard something about Amazon and Whole Foods. I love West 6th and 5th, but I really try to stay away because it’s so crowded.
I was in WF the other day; they were _really_ pushing Prime memberships, which confused me until I remembered who owns them now.
Meanwhile, Trader Joe's is owned by the guy who owns Aldi!

Same. The Food Lion by my mom's house still does that, but that's the only good thing about that grocery store lol
We have Aldi in America. It's been in America for years. It's in many states here
You're right about it. I'm not sure where you're from, and how long Aldi has been in your area. I'm on NW Indiana, and the first Aldi opened in Merrillville Indiana on 1979. They were that basic when they came to my area. The hours were a lot different then. Before I believe 1993 or 1994, they were open 9am to 7pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to 8pm on Friday and Saturday 9am to 6pm, closed Sundays and all federal holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day). In the 90's, they expanded the hours to 9am to 9pm Monday to Saturday. It would not be until 2006 before they experiments with opening on Sundays being open from 9am to 6pm, to eventually being open to 8pm on Sundays.
For bags, before 1992, Aldi never offered bags at all, and you either brought your own, or used empty boxes from the shelves,
I don't remember when some produce started being sold by the pound (US pound for weight to those from other parts of the world), but I know it was after they got scanners, and I'll get to that part in a moment. Before they got scales built into the scanners, produce was sold individually. Like then, produce quality is a hit or miss. Back then, it was more miss, because produce was not refrigerated at all in the earliest days. At older stores that haven't been remodel, still have room temperature produce.
Before 2004, cashiers had to memorize the prices of every item, because price tags were never put on the products. I never understood why Aldi waited so long to get scanners, since most grocery stores were getting them in the mid to late 80's. Their store products back in the early 80's, were already set up with multiple barcodes, but never utilized until 2004. So cashiers weren't as fast back then. They had to look at each item, enter the price, and department. Then put the items on the cart. At least local to me, stuff wasn't as dented and smashed. With scanners, they throw everything in the cart fast, resulting in damaged groceries.
Carts didn't get the locks on them until 1994. Aldi started selling bags in 1992. They accepted debit card payments in 2000, and credit cards in 2016. Scanners were put in in 2004.
@@davenwin1973 if you don't have coins forget the cart as aldi's now charges a quarter to use.
@@lindawright8949 it's a deposit. You have to return the cart back to get the quarter back. At most locations currently, they have been limiting people in their stores, and sanitizing carts. So they're temporarily putting quarters in the locks of carts themselves, but you still have to return the cart to the front of the store, so they can sanitize them for each use.

The first Aldi in America opened in 1976 in Iowa. Today they have over 1,000 stores across 35 states in the U.S.

The reason that Lidl and aldi don’t pack your bags for you is to save money and time. They cut corners everywhere and that is why the products are cheaper so that the customer gets the saving

I love that Brit supermarket pack the groceries! In Italy none of them does, in fact you always have this anxious feeling when checking out to be fast to not block the next customers.
I live in England and I’ve never had someone pack my bags except if I’m buying a bag(which I never do I bring plastic bags and woven ones from home) but apart from that for me it’s never happened
Yea but here where I live in america Aldi is cheapest of cheap grocery store with mostly off brand goods, maybe one step from a dollar store its like a big dollar general grocery store.... Don't like that they charge change to get a simple grocery cart to use that's probably been paid for twenty times over
@@shadeshiest22 they do that thing with the carts to eliminate shop cart damagecto your automobile and they don't have to pay someone to round up the carts which saves even more money.
When I was stationed in the U.K. In the early 70’s, we lived in Ipswich, East Anglia, and there were no “grocery stores”, per se, just individual shops. Green grocer, butcher, fish shop, etc. There was a Tesco, but it was new and not very large. I also loved M & s, but I only remember them selling clothes.

I find it so funny that you expect the supermarkets to pack your groceries for you. In Norway we pack ourself, and would feel kind of awkward if someone packed our stuff. My first time in America I asked my American stepmom "why are they touching our groceries?" And she laughed so hard. We actually had lidl here in Norway for a couple years, but then all of them got closed down. People just went there to pick up wired candies and other things we had never seen before. Because all other shops in Norway have the exact same products from the same brands, so you get the same thing no matter where you shop. So lidl was kind of exotic.

Aldi has been around in the U.S. for a while but they were always considered lower class. Where I live in NC, Aldi is making some huge changes and has become quite the popular place these days. Ours just got a huge makeover and expansion, and is quite nice. But I will go just about anywhere to avoid Wal-Mart. Harris Teeter is our high-end grocer, and while their prices are insane, their selection and staff are worth it. Lidle is brand new with a few popping up in our area. I have yet, though, to visit one. Thank you for the education, Joel & Lia. Love you guys!
In Philadelphia PA we have Trader Joe's & Wegman's my personal favorites. Then, the Rushoah store Net Cost. The Shop Rite on Frankford Avenue follows.

The next time you go to the US, please make a vid about a visit to TRADER JOE’S! I don’t think you’ll regret it :). TJ’s started in California, but was then bought by Theo Albrecht (who runs the Aldi Nord supermarkets in Germany). The US has had Aldi supermarkets (with the Aldi Sud orange and blue logo) for probably over 20 years, and they are growing rapidly and competing with ‘cheap food’ stores like Walmart and Kroger. The Aldi supermarkets I’ve been to are nice and cheap, and are increasingly focused on fresh organic produce, vegetarian/vegan options, and tasty German imports.

I live in Texas and the best and most beloved supermarket here is H.E.B. It’s local to Texas and has lots of good quality foods (a lot of organic options as well) and all very reasonably priced. ❤️Lots of love from Texas

H.E.B is in South and Central Texas. We do not have them in North and Northeast Texas. We have Brookshire's which is based out of Tyler. It is a good Supermarket but kind of pricey. I believe H.E.B is better. I shopped at the one in San Marcos when I lived there
Aldi isn't new in America, we have had them for quite sometime.

Aldi has great organic foods and excellent meat. At least here in Chicago.
Hubby and I were shopping at Aldi in, like, 87 or 88 in Ohio. They've changed a *lot* over the years, though. Their food is a lot better now -- no weird artificial colors, lots of organic and free trade options. The stores are cleaner than when we first started. Unfortunately, the closest one to my place out in the boonies is, like, half an hour away by car. There's one just down the street from my hubby's work, though, so he'll buy stuff and bring it home. No frozen stuff, though -- too far away.
That said, I don't think they've been everywhere for as long as they have been in the Midwest.
I got some good organic stuff at the Aldi's near Granville station on the Red Line, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg.
My family has been shopping at Aldi in the Midwest for years. Quality has definitely improved and it's great for Middle Class families.
When I lived in Charleston, SC we had a grocery store called Lowes that was amazing. They had a coffee bar, craft beer, they smoked meats, had a sushi bar. I loved that place. We have Aldi and Kroger where I live now.
Wegman’s is an eastern US supermarket that rocks. Expensive- but always awesome.
Jimmy Floyd I used to shop at the “Weggies” outside of Princeton, NJ. I had never seen a supermarket with an elevator before.
Is it really eastern US? When one opened here in northborough I was under the impression it was from the south for some reason.
I wish one would come to Burlington VT. I had to wait about 7 years for a Trade Joe's to finally come here after moving her in 2007

Being British: Joel & Lia Aldi is springing up sporadically across the US. Still haven't been in one,, but there's one not far from my house. I can go take pictures if you'd like. Also, as far as comparing grocery stores, every tend to be regional here. For instance, a lot of the grocery stores I had growing up in San Diego, aren't here in Texas where I currently live. Although, a lot of them have merged, but like you said with Aldi/Sainsbury's, they kept their names for the brand recognition/loyalty.
I remember shopping at Aldi (which we usually call Aldi’s ;) with my aunt as a kid, so it’s been around in America at least since the late 1970’s. It’s known for being very inexpensive, but the ones I’ve been to have always been clean and very well organized. And the cashiers are very well paid and very fast.
We have Sprouts in Dallas. It’s like Whole Foods with reasonable prices. Love Sprouts.
The problem with supermarkets in the US is that most of them are regional, aside from Walmart and Target.
Here's a list of mostly Nationwide stores to check out when y'all are here:
Kroger
Albertsons (brands include Albertsons, Randall's, Safeway),
Ahold Delhaize (brands like Food Lion and Stop & Shop).
Publix is regional. Come to Texas and I'll show you the best supermarket in the USA: H-E-B!
In Colorado Kroger calls itself King Soopers. It's much better than Safeway here. We used to have actual Albertsons, but they've pretty much all closed.
In the Pacific Northwest Kroger's regional brand is Fred Meyer
The top store in the Midwest is Hy-Vee.
Your right about HEB but they are different. The market ones are best if you want prepared food. The one we go to you weight your produce and the scale prints the price. Some grill the chickens others don't. Been to Chicago and California for the price and quality it is hard to beat. They are expanding to other states I have heard.
Here in Atlanta I'm in Walmart at least once a month to by things I can't get online or at Kroger, or secondarily Publix, but at WM stick to groceries and avoid the veg, the meat I've never been brave enough to buy, also don't eat much of it. Bit good for lotions, odds and ends too since less that half it food - can buy TV's, etc though there's lore that some manufacturers make Walmart specials, you figure out what that means.
Curiously, Walmart has the Prima Della proprietary brand of cold cuts which are half the price of Boars Head, and better, including lean but not that flavorful pastrami, used to have same of corned beef, but has disappeared, along with other cold cuts, including monstrous concoction of the cold cut world - roast beef, roasted in some distant city and sold here in Atlanta - Yuk, no preservatives like other cold cuts. If you were in a store where the employees, always nice and always nice to them, but you know that they're downtrodden by Walmart, an interesting question to the owner about his distant city roast beef would be: "Tell me, when your mother comes for dinner here in Atlanta do you serve her this roast beef roasted in NYC and on a truck for the better part of a week? and see what s/he says. Grocery stores which sell roast beef and can't roast one in the back for deli sales - only in a country which fresses on fast food - you German scholars will understand the verb, although curiously Walmart sells excellent tasting packaged potato salad made in Oregon, but their prepared sandwiches made in Illinois make me gag.

when i went to london, i went to tesco express a few times because it was the only market near where i was staying. it reminded me of a 7/11 or QuickChek.
Aldi has been in Midwest since early 90s. I used to shop there when I was in college in Illinois. We only got an Aldi here in Texas a few years ago. I am excited that Lidl is coming here, within the year I believe.
My top supermarket is Tesco. You can never go wrong with Tesco.
Tesco EXTRA is great! They even have this little Krispy Kreme doughnuts kiosk!

When i lived in SE VA about 10 years ago, Harris Teeter and Kroger were my saviors to get organic, health/natural foods before Trader Joe's came to the area.

As far as Aldi being in the USA, they've been around for many years. However, up until fairly recently there weren't that many in Florida. They've been opening a bunch here in Florida over the past year or so. It made me happy! And yes, sometimes they do smell.
They just opened an Aldi on my street and it’s the only store I shop at now! It’s amazing and so cheap! I’m obsessed with it.
I know of one Aldi here in the US and it’s been there for at least four years that I know of...could have been longer. But people get so excited when they hear a new one is being built.
When I was living in Milwaukee Wisconsin there was an Aldi there in 2008. I'm back in Southern California and we got one in Moreno Valley first in Southern California in March 2016.
Aldi has been in the Midwestern USA for a long time, usually in lower income areas

Dale is correct. Aldi was where working poor shopped when I was a kid. But now it’s become trendy for upper middle class to shop there. Making a show of saving money is a thing now, and at the same time Aldi is owned by the same company as Trader Joe’s. Win win.

Moreover, Joel & Lia previously made a video in which they explained that as Brits, they don't see themselves as European. It wasn't their best look.

I worked at Publix for 25 years. Was a Deli Manager and a District Trainer. We instill the concept of VALUE to our associates. Giving our customers the best products and service at a competitive price. Not always the lowest price but ALWAYS the best shopping experience. Love your video's. I only shop at Waitrose. Sometimes when I'm bored I usually ask my servants to leave my palace and do groceries in preparation for tea.
In the U.S. it’s more regional, like everything else lol.
Aldi has been here in Chicago for more years than I care to remember. They are considered to be a "low class" budget store. Most Americans complain that they do not carry major brands, but those of us used to shopping in Europe realize that brands are major European brands.
BTW, Whole Foods is now owned by Amazon...............to me it was always overpriced and overrated, much to chi-chi for my taste. I want to shop for food, NOT an "experience". But that's me.................................

DeShiia Coleman Oh, good to know. I just recently discovered a Trader Joe's in Utah. They don't have much of what I'm looking for and carry organic. I don't remember there being any produce there.
I love going into grocery stores when I’m in a foreign country. So interesting.
I love spending time in the UK and keep returning regularly. And I absolutely LOVE British supermarkets. My favourites: Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Mark's & Sparks 🥰 I even end up missing and longing for them, when I'm gone.
I'm from Central Florida. Aldi is relatively new to us. Maybe only a few years old here. And yes! You are correct about Publix being the best grocery store here. It's the only store my family and I shop at. It's the cleanest, has the best bakery, deli, produce etc. And has a better selection than most other stores.

I live in Erie, Pennsylvania and we have 3 in our area. The hubs and I shop there for some things but prefer Wegmans. Its the nicest store we have here in Erie. Great quality and fair market prices. It originates in Rochester, New York. I don’t think its in all of the US.
We have 1 Whole Foods but I have heard its crazy expensive and its not a main stream store folks go to. You can most of the same items at Wegmans cheaper.
I love Wegman's. I wish they would have one down in Pittsburgh. I always stop there when I come home to visit my family in Erie.
From Rochester. Can agree, Wegmans is the best! They currently have 98 locations. As far north as Boston area and as far south as North Carolina.
Only the Eastern half the of the US has Aldi, aside from Southern California.
In Toronto, Canada, our grocery stores include Loblaws, Longo's, Metro, Sobeys, and Whole Foods.
"No Frills" is a low-priced supermarket.
I fondly remember Publix from when I lived in Florida; as well as Shaw's and Stop & Shop when I lived in the northeast of the U.S.
Here in new york we have stop&shop, whole food, food bazaar, ctown, shop rite and more. We also have bodegas(grocery) in every corner.
Many of the supermarket chains in the US are only regional so if you move regions like from the South to the Midwest the companies available are completely different. Aldi is not new in the US.
We've always referred to Whole Foods as "Whole Paycheck," because it was so pricey. Amazon recently bought the chain and prices have gone down a bit. I wonder if that's true in the UK, too?

In Boston we have Whole(paycheck) Foods (thanks from someone in the comments,Sooo true)! Very pricey! Trader Joe's.somewhat pricey, Aldi's much cheaper, produce can be "iffy", and quite a few local grocery stores..we really have a big variety of stores to choose from.
Trina Golas do you like Trader Joe's... Though they have some decent products, they seem to do a lot of prepackaged meals and are kind of light on individual ingredients...

I don't think Trader Joe's is pricey, but SOME items are a little more. The thing is, the QUALITY from TJ's is so much better, it's worth the price. I go once a month and get some of my 'standards'.

In Gaylord, Michigan, we have an Aldi's that's a couple of years old. Didn't really care for it, but I know a lot of people did like it. Never heard of Publix until this video. Heard of Whole Foods. I think they are down state. A while back I think they were in the news for overpricing. We have several smaller chain stores here too, Family Fare and Save A Lot. Another chain store we have is Meijer ~ which in my opinion is really good. Their produce is second to none and they carry a lot more plant based items and non dairy items than most. Aldi used to be here many many years ago but has been going through a re-birth in the last couple of years. When I was in college (35 years ago) Aldi featured SUPER CHEAP food and nothing was price market on the container, only the isles so the checkers had to know the price of everything (no scanners in those dark days). You could buy Aldi brand mac and cheese for $0.11/box. It featured nothing fresh but you could eat (survive) for $0.50/day. Top supermarkets for me are Safeway and Kingsooper (Kroger). The big two in the USA are Albertsons (owns Safeway) and Kroger with two dozen branded market names. In the USA it is common for one super to buy another brand but not change the name. I lived in SoCal for 30 years and there Ralphs is owned by Safeway which is owned by Albertsons but retains its original name. Independent grociers are getting rare in the USA.
Supermarket fun fact: In Mexico every little store that sells food is called a supermarket, even if it is a tiny bodega with 20 sm of floor space. el supermercado

As most people here have said, you really can't make a national list of supermarkets for the U.S., as most are regional. I've lived in 3 states (PA, TX, SC) and all 3 have completely different grocery chains. Mine in Eastern PA now are Giant, Weis & Darrenkamps. But travel 1.5 hours east to Philly, and none of those are there. Some exceptions, I believe, are Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Costco. Wegmans is considered a really nice store across parts the east coast, but it's not national. Been to Publix once or twice while travelling in the south & they were definitely not anything special or fancy. Really, where I live in Lancaster County, PA, the best places to shop are local farmers markets & farms!
Hey Joel and Lia Aldi is here in Warsaw Indiana and the makes you pack your own groceries is because faster to get you out a lot quicker and it saves them money
We’ve had an Aldi in Ohio (US) for nearly 15 years. They have many fresh foods but not many brand items. They pay employees well but are one of the few US grocers where you bring or purchase your own bags and pack them yourself.

Publix is just mostly in the south. That's where we usually go. They also have Winn Dixie they have been around a lot longer then Publix. I've lived in NY almost all my life. Moved to Florida about 6 yrs ago never heard of Publix til I moved here. I loved Shop Rite and Waldbaums when I lived in NY. I heard Waldbaums went out. There is also King Kullen and Stop n Shop. They are mostly near the North East coast. We also have Whole Foods. Prices were very high.Haven't seen one in Florida. I thought your jersey was from FL too. Aldi has been here for maybe only a few years. They are popping up in Florida lot lately. The are low class but you can get great bargains there. We go there if we are in that area. They have three near the Port Saint Lucie area. We live 45 minutes away. Never heard of any other stores you mentioned except of Aldi and Whole Foods. When I visited NY last summer they had an Aldi near my SIL house. So yes they are new here no more then 5 yrs. We also have here alot of gourmet markets here privately owned. Too expensive.
I've been to the UK a handful of times and it was so hard to tell the quality of a grocery store until you were inside. I think I have a pretty good understand of the hierarchy now, but it took multiple trips!
I live in the New Orleans area and we have our own blend of supermarket chains:
Top Tier: Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Robert Fresh Market. The first two are national, the third local.
Good Tier: Rouses Market, Winn Dixie.
Mid Tier: Walmart, Costco.
Lower Tier: Sav-a-Lot.
Plus we have a smattering of mom and pop stores which can be anywhere from Top Tier to Lower Tier.

I live in Kansas City too. Hyvee is good for their meat market and bakery. Price chopper has the best salad bar.

Growing up I've always had an Aldi nearby. I live in Illinois.

Scotty W I agree with Scotty. Also because the US is so large there are different chains in different regions. Although I do think stores like Whole Foods and then maybe Aldi and perhaps some others are nationwide. In Michigan you have stores like Meijer, Kroger, Trader Joe's, and various Spartan Stores, along with tons of smaller shops, and of course Whole Foods and Aldi. People also do grocery shopping at Walmart and Target.
I live in Monroe, MI (between Detroit and Toledo, OH), and we have had an Aldi for probably 20 years.
I'm in Utah and I've never heard of Aldi. I have heard of Meijer's (all my family is in Ohio and they have this there)and I just recently discovered a Trader Joe's.
I grew up in Michigan and we got Aldi where I lived probably 20-25 years ago. We have them where I live in Pennsylvania now as well, but I don't know that they've had them so long.
On the East Coast of the US our "posh" grocery store is Wegman's. They have a pub and restaurant, sell craft beers and wines, and have fresh food stations that sell every kind of sushi, Chinese foods, Italian dishes, not to mention your regular grocery items.
My Mom/Mum loved the Lidl that came into our village (near Bath) shortly after we moved to England when I was 12- it was cheap and quick (the food on the US military base was often cheaper, but much farther away). After we moved to the Washington, DC area after 3 years in England, it took awhile, but we found an Aldi nearby (in 2012ish, I think) and now a Lidl is moving in as a bad budget shop is moving out- and it will be right down the road from the school I teach at, so I’m looking forward to reliving middle school memories by going to Lidl :)
I've never been to a Aldi at home in the U.S., but last time I was in the U.K. I went to one. It was ok. I got some nice wine for about £7.50 and some cheese that smelled like dirty shoes.
Also, Publix deli has some lovely sandwiches. Get them.

I remember shopping at Aldi with my parents back in 1980 or so. Been here for quite a while.
Out of all those, in Romania we only have Lidl. It's been here for about 7 years I think. Apart than that we have Cora, Auchan, Carrefour, Kaufland, Mega Image, Profi, plus 2 big cach & carries, Metro and Selgros.
At least where I'm from in the US, Aldi's is seen as incredibly budget. In my city, there are lots of grocery store options, and I feel like the people who have the hardest time making ends meet will get the best deals at Aldi's. I don't think this is necessarily true everywhere in the US though.
We have wholefoods in the US and we call it whole paycheck. 😉
Here in the Seattle area we have a supermarket called Town and Country which is based in Portland, Oregon. It's rather high end with a very nice deli and wine bar and top shelf products in the aisles. Their produce section is small and not amazing, so we buy our veggies elsewhere; this time of year at the Sunday Farmers' Market.
I'd say my top grocery picks are Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. Around my area most shop at Kroger (which goes by different names depending on your region). They are headquartered close to where I am so we get things others may not, like an olive bar, wine tastings, a cheese area, etc. We do have Aldi and I shop there for staples. I love your channel! I always head here for a good laugh. Thanks for that!

I live in western Canada. We have Co-ops which are community owned. You can get a store membership card, and get a certain amount back depending on how much you spend.
It's been a dream of mine to shop at Asda,Tesco,Sainsburys,and Waitrose.Here in the u.s.a. Trenton new Jersey where I live,I have an Aldi.My favorite supermarket made a comeback but as of yet,only in New York in Brooklyn in the states
Publix is from the Southeastern US. I miss them. I’m from Georgia and relocated to Colorado to marry someone here and we don’t have them here.
Publix is my favorite “mid range” market. Excellent selection, fantastic service, always clean.
And Publix started in Florida...but is expanding all over the Southeast. We have a lot of new ones in N. Alabama, but they've been in Georgia for years.

I only have Safeway and Grocery Outlet in my small town and I only go there if I have to. Otherwise, I order my bulk items from Costco online for delivery and then drive 30 miles north to the next county for the food co-op which has the best organic and health foods, as well as produce from local farms. Neither of the grocery stores in my town carry local products.

Hi Nina, My wife went to college up in Bellingham so we shopped at Haggens back then. I don't know that there are any down here in the general Seattle area. Town and Country is a very high end supermarket out of Portland that is making inroads here. They put one here on Mercer Island a couple of years ago replacing an Albertsons that left. It's too pricey for my blood, so I go to Safeway over in Bellevue. I also go to Walmart or Costco for branded goods because you get a better price for the same items.
Costco,and Trader Joe's are nice in Upstate NY.but Wegman's is Super Nice!!!
I went to London a few months ago and it never occurred to me to go to the Supermarket, I should have gone to M&S !!! I keep hearing about that place from British YT channels. So curious to visit all of them now. Oh well, I will have to go back to London then 😄🤗
