When I mention that I like to buy beer at Waitrose, someone always claims that shopping there is expensive but it isn't really. I can buy a 4-can pack of a good brand of beer for around £5 in Waitrose. In my local convenience store, a single bottle or can goes for around £2.50.
I love supermarkets ... whenever I visit another country I must go to supermarkets there. We were on a tour in China and stopped at a pearl "factory," but a huge supermarket was at the other end of the parking lot ... When I lived in England, Sainsburys was my supermarket of choice, but I did go into Waitrose once or twice and did notice a big difference in the overall ambience. Coming from Australia, I was blown away at the ready meals options and loved a meal deal from any supermarket but I do have to say the fresh produce was really lacking. I absolutely loved going to the Whole Foods near Piccadilly Circus when I was in London and cannot wait to visit the American version and Trader Joe’s in the US.
Surprised Marks & Spencers was not on the list?? It is my favorite place to shop, same prices as sainsburys (sometimes CHEAPER) and the quality is just worlds better than everywhere else. Especially the pre-made meals, 3 single portions of really good readymade pasta is 8 pounds which is well worth it!!! Would love to see you compare m&s ready-meals with sainsbury or tesco!

waitrose is so much less expensive than people think, especially in comparison these days to co-op or tescos. idk i find myself surprised by how many things they've kept the same price while the major supermarkets have doubled or tripled prices on basic items in the last year. obviously would not shop there every day, but definitely worth a look
Booths is definitely worth a visit. I’ve been to the one in Windermere in the Lake District and had such a good shopping experience. The Booths meal deals are also the best I’ve ever had!
Ocado has such a wide variety of products, whenever I venture to a real supermarket I’m shocked how little they offer. Also they partnered with M&S which makes finding fresh organic produce easy. I read recently that while fresh produce in supermarkets usually has plastic packaging, in the long run it actually causes less waste as more produce perishes when the plastic isn’t there. You could always go to a local farm or just remove plastic packaging right away and wash produce to avoid any further contamination of the food.
I must admit when i shop locally it`s usually a Tesco or Sainsburys ,but i really wish there was an actual Ocado Supermarket ,as i`d go there everytime! If you buy anything and aren`t happy with it ,whatever the problem ,they`ll let you keep it and refund the cost.Great customer service too ,as i found out when searching for my (now departed) favourite ben and Jerrys.I wrote/emailed every supermarket i could think of.Some didn`t bother to reply ,the rest couldn`t obtain the flavour. Then ,as a last thought i wrote to Ocado and heard back within days ,from one of their top people. He not only tracked it down in another area ,he then ice packaged enough to keep me happy for months!!:) They`ll always get my vote.
I work near Waitrose and I love it. When they reduce, you can get some good buys...especially on flowers (as a horticulturist they are my weakness). I nearly fainted before Christmas, staff finished my shop and the manager gave me it for free. Another time I wanted marshmallows to make chocolate top hats, the staff member checked an order that had just come in to see for me, and offered to ring me when they did. They maybe more expensive than ALDI/LIDL, but I find staff super helpful, and somethings I get from them too.
As an American, calling the little bag of oranges "easy peelers" is amazing. We have a brand here called "Cuties", so I'm sure that would be equally hilarious in reverse. Thanks for the video.
Some guy once told me that they had worked in a dessert factory sticking labels on the desserts and the exact same dessert had two different labels, one label was for a cheap supermarket and the other label was for an expensive one. The dessert in the expensive store was nearly double the price of the dessert in the cheap store. P.S. why did you not go shop in your pyjamas? I see people do that in my local Sainsbury’s all the time.
Your videos are always so detailed, well planned and well rounded, you are simply the best! Adore any video you create made with such love and passion 🤍
I’ve lived in England over two years now and I still don’t fully understand the supermarket hierarchy. I obviously understand the price things and how some shops excel in certain areas but the breed of certain Waitrose people who would NEVER go to Morrisons or Aldi baffle me. Apparently a bag of white flour is NOT just a bag of flour. 😂
I thought that until i got a bag of m & s flour that seemed like it was full of chalk , it fizzed when you wet it ! Everything came out like a rock. So I only use the fancy branded stuff now.
Your sheer joy over supermarkets makes me so happy! I feel the same way. I think I've liked 95% of the grocery stores I've been in, all for different reasons.
lovely video!! I'm not from England but I love your supermarkets, they're so fun!! Maybe you could put other supermarkets up against each other and rank them? I know you said it's difficult because they all have their pros and cons but it'd be fun to get some more supermarket content
One of the main reasons I shop at Waitrose is the quality of the fruit and veg. The two shops near me beside Aldi and Lidl are Asda and Co-op, I’ve constantly had issues with fruit going mouldy within a day of purchase from all of these, every time I get fruit or veg from Waitrose it seems to last at least 4-5 days to a week and the taste is where it should be usually. I feel like if you stick to Waitrose essential stuff where possible for most of the shop it doesn’t cost that much.
Yes yes yes you should explore Booths!! And while you're at it, you could take a lovely Lake District holiday AND check out the best motorway services in the UK: Tebay!! Ooh or a road trip going to the best and worst motorway services!!
Morrison's best for meat and fish (by some distance imo), Waitrose for fruit and specialty items, Lidl/Aldi for cheap stuff, Tesco/Asda for weekly supplies, Home Bargains/B&M for snacks. I feel like the days of doing a 'big shop' are dying out.
Given your love of supermarkets, Grace, I’m surprised that you don’t have a trolley token on your car keys (so that you don’t need to struggle with a basket when you go to places like Lidl/Aldi)!!! I’m not even sure where you would buy them anymore, but I can vouch for them being super duper useful if you’re going to be supermarket-hopping 😁
People be hating on the north, but the Booth's supermarket Christmas book is a treat to behold (it's basically a hardback version of a supermarket magazine and it's always full of stuff that you would buy if money wasn't an issue and you had a house that could host 50 people)
I used to live in England. Loved the nostalgia I got from watching the Waitrose video. I used to shop there quite a bit. I would do most of my weekly shops at Tesco's or Waitrose, depending on what I needed, then top up at Sainsbury's (didn't have a Superstore Sainsbury's near where I lived).
I'm from the US and what is most notable to me is that grocery stores in general seem to be much more affordable in England than here- even converting to dollars
The wages are different though, I've noticed watching cash stuffing/budgeting videos your salaries seem so high. I'm on 24k and work full time in an office x
Aldi is really good. A lot of people say their fresh produce doesn’t last long but my salads have lasted 5 days and I think that’s a win! There shower gels are nice and the ice creams the ready made stuff like pizzas aren’t so good in my opinion. Lidls also good but it’s a different vibe.
so here for loving all supermarkets for their own thing!! VIDEO IDEA: definitely up for an aldi dupes video - 1. metro rolls - subway bread dupe, 2. the garlic & herb & dough ball dip for dominoes/papa johns dips dupe, 2. crisps dupes - pombears, hulahoops, sensations etc, 3. the mcdonalds chicken selects/nuggests dupe! im sure there are many other but those are my fan faves
Sainsburys still do a meal deal! They've even upped their game and brought out a £5 version where you can get a posh sandwich and possibly a Costa drink too! X
Booths is sooo nice. If you ever get the chance to visit, do! The staff are literally so nice and the produce is really good, some of it isn't even that pricey compared to other supermarkets xx
We have a Booths and an Aldi right next door to each other in our small town, so we have the best of both worlds ... and we make good use of both worlds. 😀
I noticed that Waitrose's own brand orange juice is £1.80 which is pretty good! I paid £1.75 in Asda yesterday (it was previously £1.25 but has gone up). I do prefer tropicana or innocent but they were around £4 in Asda and I just couldnt justify that.
unironically saved money shopping at waitrose, gotten double the meat for only 20% more than my local tesco. worked out to me being able to make more meals out of it and saving like £4 on the meat. banger. Though, Lidl is still one of the best, if you've got one with a bakery their freshly baked goods are immaculate. Aldi food has given me terrible diarrhoea too many times I'd like to recount.
Your comparison didnt really illustrate the quality difference in the goods. Looking closely at the ingredients, a product will taste better if it has more sugar or additives. Hard to compare like for like
I think doing a cheap vs expensive picnic basket would be a great idea. I’d like to see some more obscure items that I wouldn’t necessarily see. Also Sunday dinners. Love these videos ❤
Aldi’s ‘Specially Selected’ curries (black labels) are THE best supermarket curries out there and I’ve tried them all. They are not just far, far superior to the other curries but they are on par with many a takeaway curry I’ve had.
Enjoyed this! I usually shop at the more affordable grocery stores here like Walmart but have wondered if more expensive stores like Whole Foods are worth the hype
I remember when I was in primary or high school there was a girl that her mum was a bit posh and she always said “I will never shop in Aldi it’s too cheap for me” my parents once saw her and the girl walking out of there and hiding the shopping with Marks and Spencer’s bags to make it look like she never went to Aldi, shocking that people do that ahah
I absolutely HATE going to Lidl or Aldi just because of the queue and mostly how fast they try to get you through the checkout. It's an aweful experience every time because of that and I know it's one of the thing they do to be cheaper but I just hate it and never shop there because of that.
I love a good supermarket mooch! As someone who lives in the Lakes where Booths is the nearest supermarket, it’s definitely expensive but it’s basically the northern Waitrose as we don’t have those, so I do prefer Aldi but booths meal deal is TOP TIER
Please can you to Tesco vs Asda one day? I’d love to see what difference it makes with the point cards in both shops & what’s better value as I only shop in them two 😊
I audibly gasped when you said gold kiwis aren’t readily available in supermarkets there. They’re pretty much a standard in Australia now alongside the green ones. More expensive, sure, but readily available. And delicious
Waitrose are more generous with reductions than other supermarket. If you pick the right time with the yellow labels, you can have some delicious Waitrose products for about the same price as Tesco.... they have a day's date left, so because I do small shops daily that's fine for me!
If you shop organic, like I do, or simply care more about the quality of the food you're consuming and the welfare of the animals from which animal products are derived, Waitrose is really the only supermarket worth shopping at. And the experience of shopping at a Waitrose is just so relaxing.
I live in Australia and I shop at aldi weekly and our aldi is so different! We have hardly any veg in plastic and it’s mostly locally grown, we don’t have sandwiches and ready meals etc, the alcohol is seperate from the rest of the food also
I’m amazed with the huge selection of items in Aldi, compared with Aldi here in the States (Midwest)! It’s like a totally different shop! (Which I guess it is, strictly speaking….)
Supermarkets in Australia needs to "up their game" - I lived in the UK for a bit and miss the amount of variety they had. Especially for people with dietary requirements.
I think Waitrose is quite overrated to be honest. For the price, the quality doesn’t match up, personally. For me M&S is a much better choice in terms of price in comparison to quality. I could shop between there and Lidl only if my budget allowed. Of the big four supermarkets, I think Sainsbury’s is my favourite overall but Morrisons has a great Butchers section.
If you love the idea of comparing differently priced supermarkets, I think you’d LOVE watching @Barry Lewis’s channel! He and his wife make some awesome-looking food, and they compare “cheap Vs steep” ingredients and then rate which one taste better (they’ve had quite a few surprising results!)
Where I live, in the US, all the shops stopped playing music in March 2020, and never started up again. The only other pandemic thing that I think stayed is not doing rain checks anymore.
I grew up in the north west and we had a Booths in town... the town now has an Aldi, Waitrose and Sainsburys. I think the population is about 15k so people ought to hopefully be well fed! Booths is needlessly expensive however...
You got a point that Aldi (and Lidl, ASDA etc) are chaotic and messy but that's mainly because of the kind of people that shop there. I mostly shop at M&S as I have one just around the corner and it's never messy but when I go to Lidl I always see customers making mess and misplacing items. Customers at M&S and Waitrose don't act like animals that's why their stores are nice and tidy.
I have to admit I do like M&S foods - and they do still do meal deals, as do Sainsbury's, Boots, Spar and Superdrug. We've only got one Waitrose in Sheffield and it's at the other side of town for us (but not far from where my OH works), so we don't tend to use it, but maybe will more when he's back in the office full-time. For the supermarket-type shops I like Sainbury's and M&S, because they've both got good bakery sections.
You really should try and visit an Aldi in Germany. There's quite a difference i've noticed i.e. every Aldi has a fresh bakery aisle, in fact, all supermarket chains in germany do ps. I know that there is always a difference as the supermarkets adapt to every country, it's just that I think because Aldi is a german supermarket chain, they do things quite differently here
Lidl supermarkets in the U.K. tend to have big bakeries. I’m sure it’s a universal problem but some people don’t like the fresh bakeries because some customers use their hands to pick their items or allow their children to touch them.
I used to work in waitrose.... we used to open boxes in the stock room all the time that were meant to be for other supermarkets and came from the same place! this was 15 years ago but im sure its still the same
I shop in Waitrose. I find virtually every other supermarket a stressful experience. There’s something Zen about the environment. Yes, it’s slightly more expensive, but with the possible exception of M&S, the quality is invariably superior.

I find meal deals really tacky and they are not healthy! each to their own but meal deals really put me off a supermarket
I see people do that in my local Sainsbury’s all the time.
heard the same from a friend who works for a juice supplier
Ive been down a grackle rabbithole for the part two hours and now i get a new video! I feel spolied🥰
No music in Waitrose is one reason many people chose to go there. It’s a plus plus plus!!!!
Your sheer joy over supermarkets makes me so happy! I feel the same way. I think I've liked 95% of the grocery stores I've been in, all for different reasons.
I Love this series! So fun! You can def keep doing more with other items and/or other supermarkets.
lovely video!!
Motor way services food could be an entire series. Especially if you put restrictions on it likely trying to find something healthy!
Morrison's is shocking over priced and not great quality tbh I much prefer Aldi and half the price
@LindsayB1997 the meat at Morrison’s is occasionally very good price but nothing else really
You can use a key in a pinch #lifehack
People be hating on the north, but the Booth's supermarket Christmas book is a treat to behold (it's basically a hardback version of a supermarket magazine and it's always full of stuff that you would buy if money wasn't an issue and you had a house that could host 50 people)
that sounds glorious
I used to live in England. Loved the nostalgia I got from watching the Waitrose video. I used to shop there quite a bit. I would do most of my weekly shops at Tesco's or Waitrose, depending on what I needed, then top up at Sainsbury's (didn't have a Superstore Sainsbury's near where I lived).
I love that you took the camera around the shops with you.
In Canada we had 12$ pasta sauce LOL and it was in regular supermarket, food prices are insane everywhere
I'm from the US and what is most notable to me is that grocery stores in general seem to be much more affordable in England than here- even converting to dollars
The wages are different though, I've noticed watching cash stuffing/budgeting videos your salaries seem so high. I'm on 24k and work full time in an office x
@@jengetsherlifetogether ah that makes sense!
I will still never get over how cheap supermarkets in the UK are! For around 40 items in my local supermarket is $350
Our wages are much lower keep that in mind!
We have a Booths and an Aldi right next door to each other in our small town, so we have the best of both worlds ... and we make good use of both worlds. 😀
Sounds like you’re living the dream
Hard to compare like for like
Honestly Grace your one liners get me all the time! "You can look banging but be a horrible person" LOL, preach tho🙆🏾♀️❤️
In Aldi you get your pound back from the trolley it’s just so people don’t steal them or leave them all over the car park!
I think doing a cheap vs expensive picnic basket would be a great idea. I’d like to see some more obscure items that I wouldn’t necessarily see. Also Sunday dinners. Love these videos ❤
I went to the lake district the other week and went into booths it was definitely a more luxurious m and s
Booths is my nearest shop and I love it so you deffo need to try it but yeah wouldn't do a full shop there! Haha xx
i always enjoy your videos because you go to places near where i used to live, nostalgia
I agree with Grace, every supermarket is good in its own way😍
I absolutely HATE going to Lidl or Aldi just because of the queue and mostly how fast they try to get you through the checkout. It's an aweful experience every time because of that and I know it's one of the thing they do to be cheaper but I just hate it and never shop there because of that.
what i want to know is why the lady at 7:00 needs alllllll the diet coke.
I love a good supermarket mooch! As someone who lives in the Lakes where Booths is the nearest supermarket, it’s definitely expensive but it’s basically the northern Waitrose as we don’t have those, so I do prefer Aldi but booths meal deal is TOP TIER
Booths is a great supermarket and most people in south don’t know them
I think meal deals are usually in stores that are around offices like boots/Tesco foods, etc smaller places rather than big random supermarkets
M&S vs Lidl would be a good comparison. Then Sainsburys vs Tesco and Morrisons vs Asda x
9:00 it's kombucha with virgin mojito flavour.
Just tried Equinox the other day and some flavours taste really nice! 😇
Please can you to Tesco vs Asda one day? I’d love to see what difference it makes with the point cards in both shops & what’s better value as I only shop in them two 😊
The Aldi checkout stresses me out so much
I audibly gasped when you said gold kiwis aren’t readily available in supermarkets there. They’re pretty much a standard in Australia now alongside the green ones. More expensive, sure, but readily available. And delicious
And method cleaner? That’s even available here at coles and woolies
Kiwis are quite often available, I don’t remember not ever being able to find them but wouldn’t say they are that popular over here.
I got an aldi ad on this video 😂 would love to see you continue this series!!
Waitrose are more generous with reductions than other supermarket. If you pick the right time with the yellow labels, you can have some delicious Waitrose products for about the same price as Tesco.... they have a day's date left, so because I do small shops daily that's fine for me!
You should do a vs video of all the sit-in cafes, at supermarkets!! I haven't been to one of those in yearsssssss
Did anyone else notice the lady at 7:01 with a trolly full of Diet Coke
I live in Lytham St Annes (Lancashire) and have 2 Booths near me! Yes they are expensive! Kind of like a Waitrose for the North! X
Where I live, in the US, all the shops stopped playing music in March 2020, and never started up again. The only other pandemic thing that I think stayed is not doing rain checks anymore.
The waitrose reduced section near closing time is amazing.
I grew up in the north west and we had a Booths in town... the town now has an Aldi, Waitrose and Sainsburys. I think the population is about 15k so people ought to hopefully be well fed! Booths is needlessly expensive however...
My favourite supermarkets are Waitrose, Aldi and Sainsburys
You got a point that Aldi (and Lidl, ASDA etc) are chaotic and messy but that's mainly because of the kind of people that shop there. I mostly shop at M&S as I have one just around the corner and it's never messy but when I go to Lidl I always see customers making mess and misplacing items. Customers at M&S and Waitrose don't act like animals that's why their stores are nice and tidy.
So like... Poor people?
the price makes that worth it for me i think
Have you tested Waitrose Essential range?
I have to admit I do like M&S foods - and they do still do meal deals, as do Sainsbury's, Boots, Spar and Superdrug. We've only got one Waitrose in Sheffield and it's at the other side of town for us (but not far from where my OH works), so we don't tend to use it, but maybe will more when he's back in the office full-time. For the supermarket-type shops I like Sainbury's and M&S, because they've both got good bakery sections.
You really should try and visit an Aldi in Germany.
There's quite a difference i've noticed i.e. every Aldi has a fresh bakery aisle, in fact, all supermarket chains in germany do
ps.
Finally, someone who also has an enthusiasm for supermarkets.
I used to work in waitrose.... we used to open boxes in the stock room all the time that were meant to be for other supermarkets and came from the same place! this was 15 years ago but im sure its still the same
ill never get over the aldi premade cinamon rolls- forever a fav
This is my idea of perfect content, I LOVED the footage of the supermarkets
I shop in Waitrose. I find virtually every other supermarket a stressful experience. There’s something Zen about the environment. Yes, it’s slightly more expensive, but with the possible exception of M&S, the quality is invariably superior.
And the flavours ✨look preeetty great✨
Best voice overs on UA-cam, love you grace❤
