    I’m half Lao and half Thai, and I grew up speaking Lao because my Lao grandfather and my Thai grandmother taught me growing up here in America when they left Laos as refugees. I never grew up speaking Thai, but I do understand Thai but only from Isan, but not from other regions in Thailand.

      That's interesting, maybe you should return for learning vacation, believe they have a special visa just for that.

    My wife is from Isaan and she has taught me many of these words and others. I'm not fluent in Isaan, but I like to try to pick up as many Isaan words as I can. Thanks for making this video.

    I lived for 13 years in beautiful Thailand, and spent a lot of my time in Amnatcharoen in NE Thailand,i speak Isan more fluently thain Thai thanks to my beautiful wife who used to tell me what people were saying,but i would take phrases and words myself, write them down as i would pronounce them in English, and ask my wife how to say them, and i learnt over a period of years living in the beautiful part of Isan which was Amnatcharoen.Forever in my heart,COY QUITHORT AMNATCHAROEN.💙💙💙

    I'd like to understand more about the differences between Lao and Isaan. When I traveled through Laos I picked up a couple of words like ໂດຍ that Isaan and Central Thai people did not know. Too often I hear people say Isaan and Lao are the same instead of similar.

    • @keenanmiltonrip
      @keenanmiltonrip 3 роки тому +3

      that's correct. My mom is Issan and my dad is Lao and the two languages are similar but different.
      In my opinion I would estimate that the 2 languages are 85% lexical similar.

    • @gotoastal
      @gotoastal 3 роки тому +1

      @@keenanmiltonrip yes, and that's what I really want to uncover is what are those differences

    • @keenanmiltonrip
      @keenanmiltonrip 3 роки тому +2

      @@gotoastal I will try my best to give you examples I heard and that still confuse me as I speak both languages (fluent but not bilingual as I grew up overseas). I would say that there are differences in words (due to the influence of Central Thai), and differences in the grammar or in the accent. I would not bother to highlight the tones differences as it is going to get complicated.
      Basic words like hello, thank you and yes ( as you mentioned "doi" is not used by Essan) are different. Thai essan would pronounce some words with "r" or "l" like Central Thai speakers whereas Lao would pronounce the same word with an 'H" e.g for hotel: Essan would pronouce "rongreem" or "longlaeem" whereas lao would say "Honghaem". The construction of sentence can be also different e.g to say: "cannot remember": "jam bor dai' but Lao would say "bor ju ( the U sounds like the " U umlaut" in Gernan).
      Some other differences: Lao tell the time like in English e.g 7pm (translated as jet mong leng , literally translated as 7 eveving ) whereas Thai Essan follow the Central Thai system (7pm is "thum nung". Lao do not divide the clock to 4 blocks of 6 hours. Lao seldom use the Buddhist year on a daily basis but would just say 2021 like in the rest of the world, whereas Thai Essan use the Buddhist Thai year like in the rest of Thailand.
      Counting is also differnt:
      for example for the number 50 000 Lao would "ha sip phan" ( literally "five 10 thousands) but Thai Essan would say Ha muen.

      @@keenanmiltonrip I do speak Thai+Lao and studied SEast Asia Countries history. Yes, Lao & Isan were ONE just over 100 years ago, at the present Isan adopted many Thai (Siam) words due to Thai education since it´s part of Thailand.

      Isan was once part of Laos territory until the French gave that away to Thailand.. Isan language is influence by Lao people. In fact, their DNA originate from neighboring Laos. Isan people are not related to the ethnic Thais. The ethnic Thais are Siamese people. That's why the country is called Thailand or Siam. The official language is Thai, not Lao or Isan.

      I know exactly what you mean because it’s the same for me. I’m confused sometimes when I know two different words with the same meaning… now knowing it’s influenced by Lao makes sense and I’m learning more about my roots and why the Isan “dialect” is actually so different.
