I was surprised when Leica abandoned the Leica R system without transitioning to digital, but what shocked me more was the development and release of the digital medium format Leica S2 system, which ended up being a disaster due to a CCD sensor corrosion problem while the system was still in its early stages, and has yet to recover, and is not performing as well as it should due to the astronomical price point given that it is a remarkable optical system.
I have a Leicaflex sl and an R4. You are right, i could only afford one lens and a 2x Leica tele extender. But if i can only afford one lens, i could do much worse than my F2 50mm Sumicron. What camera system, Mr. Woo?
The R8 was a amazing camera, the ergonomics, viewfinder and metering system was the best of any camera as ever tested or worked. Mine still great, even after 22 years of work.
Leica stopped Repair of them and having spares for others. R8/9 are out of support. And electric cameras of this type are complex and can fail like any other camera, suddenly.

The R8 is the only Leica I’ve ever wanted. Such an awesome design. The bodies are somewhat affordable these days, shame the lenses still cost a bomb.

I have a SL and a R6, and I extend my not buying electronic cameras to Leica as well. So no R8 for me.

Leica classic at Leica store Vienna in Austria still repair it, however only some faults, because they lack some spare parts.
