Your videos are still as pleasant as ever. You talk with humility while you are full of talent. Thanks a lot. My gear : M262 / 28 Elmarit / 50 Summilux. Period. And believe me, that's all I need to be happy. Talking about "a Q or a Lux 28 ?", I'll choose the Lux 28 because in 10 or 15 years this lens will always be as good and valuable. Not sure that a Q will still be in a perfect working order in 2035.
Great video Nick!!! Nice to see other videos from Leica right now than just M11 promotions. Love my summaron and summicron 28mm. Many greats used 28mm like Garry Winogrand.
Absolutely agree with your comments on the Summaron Nick. It is a jewel which makes me smile and the rendition is film like on my M262 and is a great combination with my M-A. Can’t beat it in my view.
Awesome video Nick! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and especially sharing your lens paring recommendations. I just bought an M11 (my first Leica) along with a 50 Lux and was really looking into the 35 but now and aiming for the 28. I almost went with a fairly priced used Cron but now, you along with some others have said to skip it and just go w: the Lux. I’m all in now! Cheers!
I really enjoyed your series on the 28, 35 and 50 FL. Thank you. I am getting the M11 next week and agonized over what lens to get with it. I shot 50mm 1.8 for 17 years in the late 70's/80's as frankly that's what I bought and never occurred to me to get another lens. I was sure I'd get the 50 1.4 this time but tried both that and the 35 1.4 at the Leica LA store and I just liked the 35mm length better. I have more room for error on focusing and just something about the light on that lens. I'm getting the 75mm 2.0 APO to pair with it and I'm done. The beauty of the M11 is I can either crop in post or quickly switch to 1.3x mode and then get the equivalent of 50mm and 90mm thereabouts while shooting. Very excited!
The 28 'Cron ASPH is my most used M-mount lens and I have not found it's performance wanting in any respect. And I love the more subtle tonal graduations of the Summaron, especially when shooting monochrome. Have not tried the 'Lux yet though.
The best combination M lenses to me is the 50mm 0.95 Noctilux , 28mm summilux and 90mm apo summicron and for very wide is the super Elmar 21mm . This is my 4 lenses I keep and never sale them . They work perfectly with my Monochrom and M10 .
Haha I think I am different! I start from 28 and if I need more it’s grabbing 24 , less 35. I know on would do but I’ve always loved the effects of being as close as can be. Sometimes you can’t, well that means I can’t photograph
It's a great focal length to practice when you are new to the M-rangefinder-series of Leica with manual focus. Thus, when you are new to the system, start with this one. Practice, practice and practice from F8 to 5.6 , etc... When you are capable to handle this lens go to 50mm (not the other way around, like I did at first).
A live saving video for me. I'm a 28+50 person. As I decide to simplify to one lens only, I started to consider 35. I bought a cheap 35 to try but I have to admit I don't enjoy it. Your video shows that I can just simplify to 28 only!
Not directly. I had a 24mm Elmarit-R which was not stellar but that's because it has a Minolta optical design inside. There are many different version of the R lenses - Thorsten Overgaard has a very detailed list on his website. The MTF chart for your lens looks pretty decent, esp. stopped down a bit.
It's a series of white patches marked inside the lens mount that tells the camera what lens is fitted. It's called 6-bit encoding because there are 6 patches, each of which can be black or white, for a total number of 64 different combinations.

Terrific discussion. Excellent photos.

Owning all four, and previously owning a Q, I have the same experiences and outcomes, the 28/1.4 Summilux is the king of them all.
Your videos and perspectives are always appreciated…thank you.
My pleasure!

Hoping to get a Leica before I pass to the next life. What a robust piece of equipment!
Well done as always. For 28 mm, I have the Summaron. Since I already own the Q, I bought the 24 mm Summilux which is easy to use on the M.
Thanks for a wonderful talk and introduction.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Why can you elaborate? Im thinking of starting with the 50mm first

Thank you, Nick. Nice video, as always! Have you tried or will you review the newest 28mm, the closer focus Summicron? Thank you.
Very good review, for black and white photography which lens is better?
Hard to say - maybe the Summaron if you want a vintage look.
Hi Nick. I own the 28mm R Version II. Do you have any experience with this one?
Not directly. I had a 24mm Elmarit-R which was not stellar but that's because it has a Minolta optical design inside. There are many different version of the R lenses - Thorsten Overgaard has a very detailed list on his website. The MTF chart for your lens looks pretty decent, esp. stopped down a bit.
I came across a 28mm elmarit 6-bit and didn’t understand what 6-bit means. What does it mean?
It's a series of white patches marked inside the lens mount that tells the camera what lens is fitted. It's called 6-bit encoding because there are 6 patches, each of which can be black or white, for a total number of 64 different combinations.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Thanks
No safari 28mm? 😟
😢
The Safari variant is a 28mm Summicron. Optically the same as the production model.
4 lenses I can never afford😭🤣
That sumaron…. Really trying to justify its purpose….
