Tim's low "growl" sounds more like "Dragon growl" to me.🐉🐉 Love it !! Austin's higher notes lend an angelic ringing sound to the song that is so beautiful. I love it when Tim and Austin go opposite directions and just seems to "Split" the sound barrier. I'd heard Tim & Austin described as the yin and yang of singing but I love your juxtaposition of the "angel and the dragon"! They have 2 duets on Austin's channel ("My Maria" and "What's it to You" and both are terrific!).
This Christmas tune is decades older than “We are the World”, Peter. It was Bing Crosby that recorded this in ‘62 or ‘63 and it became a huge success and was heard in many TV shows and films since. Bing has a lovely low voice, usually in the baritone register, but he took it down to the cellar now and again, so you might enjoy the original recording. Another fine analysis! 🙏

I love this arrangement. This video was shot in the Ice Castle in Minnesnowta that year. I believe it was in Eden Prairie that year. We usually have an ice palace every year, depending on the weather, and they are done in different areas of "the cities".

I think this is one of the most favorite songs for many Home Fries. It is a complex arrangement and thus there is so much going on in the background vocals and harmonies. It truly is a feast for the ears. Thanks for your reaction and Merry Christmas!

For me one of the best arranged songs, or perhaps the best, of Home Free. So impressive! The phenomenal beatboxing/vocal percussion , the overwhelming bass(notes), the great harmonies, the sound effects, colors, etc. in such a beautiful but cold scenery. I could listen and watch this all the time. A lot happens, but not that it is disturbing. Just amazing.
The crazy thing about this song is that even though in this video it is produced to perfection, hearing it live, it still sounds as good. It's crazy how they can do that. According to legend (read that as internet stories) this is such a complex arrangement that at first the guys were resistant to doing it live. Not sure if that is true or not. But as I have heard it live myself, they obviously have embraced it as one of their most beloved Christmas songs. I can really get lost in listening to the intricacies of it.
Yes, that is true. They would not do it live at first because it didn't live up to the quality of the recording. They will not perform any song live if it isn't up to full standard. When Adam started using a looper, then they could do it live. It is still ALL LIVE as Adam sets the looper live...(meaning not prerecorded into the looper)
It's crazy how it sounds surprisingly the same when they do this live. It's incredible. Adam Rupp is an instrumentalist by training and you can definitely hear how that affects this arrangement.

I saw them do this live in Wisconsin a couple of years ago. Austin wasn't there - he had the flu, so they had a dummy dressed up as him. Since their crew always records each voice individually in their concerts, they were able to use a recording from a separate concert for a lot of his vocals. When Austin had a lead/solo line, Tim did a lot of them. But the most impressive thing was where they do the repeat starting with Tim's growl, going up an octave for each echo - Tim did his bass thing and then went up and sang Austin's high repeat. It was AMAZING!

This was my first introduction to Home Free, in around 2017. I listened to it and was completely overwhelmed by the complexity of the arrangement. It took several listens before I could really appreciate what they produced. I then didn't find them again until late 2020, and I realized what I had been missing out on.

Well, the group started out in Minnesota. At this time I believe they were still in the area. Due to the weather being so cold up there they do a ice castle thing in different towns. It was a great place to shoot a Christmas Song Video!
Adam's arrangement is fantastic. Convoluted in the best ways. Chris, at that point anyway, was a baritone. He has worked on his range and his cover of Amazing Grace starts out remarkably low. It startled me the first time I heard it. It's always interesting to hear you break things down, but I believe this is the first time I've seen you give up on deciphering a chord! HF so often has unexpected chord progressions, suspensions, and just plain "What? Play that again!" moments.
I love this group! My 1st a capella group was Straight No Chaser & Home Free was recommended when I was watching SNC videos. My 1st HF video was O Holy Night and I've loved them ever since! They are so talented, down home & personable. I just love them! ❤ 😊
I recommend checking out The Blenders. They are Darren Rust’s group. He is Home Free’s producer. Their version of O Holy Night is wonderful. These days they mostly sing with a backing band, but still do some acapella. Also, they only do Christmas shows these days as they’ve been around for 30+ years. @PeterBarber You're right about the notes from We Are the World. It's in one of the lines of the verses. The rhythm is different, but the notes are basically the same as in Do You Hear What I Hear.
Despite the rest of the lads not being super pumped given the complexity, Adam Rupp deserves some kind of award for creating this arrangement from a drastically less interesting original imho! The walking bassline is great, some chewy chord choices, the 4 octaves in 4 seconds round thing is a fun flex, Austin's quacky Strat-no-caster funk guitar line deserves a shout, & that Stevie Wonder -esque twist toward the end is #ChefsKiss Just *so* satisfying all round. Definitely one of my favourite Home Free productions. :)

Within the last year, between Tim and fairy voice mother yt channel, I unlocked a talent I didn’t know I had reaching way lower bass notes than I thought possible. Not f1 or g1 but ok on the rest of Tim’s stuff. Enjoying the exploration of this new discovery

Ive seen them live abd Tim sounds like this without processing. Also Austin has a natural high and I doubt thats a falsetto. Check the new video by them, Austin brings it.
Chris talked about this when he reacted to it: when you were debating when Tim hit his second E1, the four vocalists actually doing the same phrase in four different octaves. Tim starts at an E1 growl (layered with it one octave up, he doesn't complete the "I say" in the first octave, but he does in live performances), Chris starts at E2 two beats later, Rob at E3, and Austin at E4 to cover five octaves in nine beats. Easily one of their best arrangements, and it's crazier to hear it live.
really enjoyed this....glad you caught Tim's walkdown (actually, you really don't miss much and that's why I watch). When they did the "listen to what I say" with Tim, Chris, Rob and Austin (at 24:46) , they each came in an octave apart...Tim started in the sub-basement, Chris up 8, Rob up another 8 and then Austin on the roof. The Ice Castel moves every year it's built new at a new location it was freaking Cold the night they filmed this. poor Tim. Chris is a Baritone with tenor and Bass capabilities he just never felt he was consistent in his bass range. I think he's worked that out with 7th Ave and Cypress Fyre

All the members of this group are amazing, but Rob is one of the most beautiful tenors I have ever heard. His sound is like butter and pure. Just so yummy to listen to.
Amazing analysis of this song Adam Rupp is mostly responsible for Home Free even existing very early on there were times Chris wanted to quit but Adam talked Chris out of it this arrangement by Adam showcases the talent of the entire group including Darren Rust their producer who records their songs.
I've seen others claim that when they're recording like this, they double-track Tim for the bass and Chris/Adam Chance just lip-synch for the video. But LIVE, Chris (in the past) or Adam Chance (now) will actually take over the bass.
In studio settings, Chance does take most of the bass when Tim sings lead, yes. But back when Chris was the baritone, it is indeed Tim that double-tracks in studio recordings, most of the time at least. It's rather obvious in some videos, especially the old video of "I've Seen", "Champagne Taste (on a Beer Budget)", and a few more. For definitive proof, see Chris Rupp's reaction video on "All About That Bass", where he explains it at about 5:40. (Interestingly, "All About That Bass" is actually one of the rare exceptions where Chris takes the bass, and boy can he sing bass!) But unlike VoicePlay who sometimes sing over a Geoff bass track live (most notable example being "Oogie Boogie's Song"), you're absolutely right in saying that Chris sang bass in live settings! My favourite example is "Thinkin' Out Loud", where Chris growls well into the 1st octave like it's no business haha.

My absolute favorite Home Free song. Best arrangement of any Christmas song, ever. I think that when you thought Chris was doing the bass while Tim was leading, it was actually a doubletrack of Tim. Chris says that in live performances he would take the bass, but for the studio version they would doubletrack because - well, Tim.
This song was written long before We Are The World. It was written back in 1962 and was actually a Christmas song about the Cuban Missile Crisis! There was an ubiquitous choral arrangement of it going around in the 70's, and every school choir was forced to do it. I personally hated this song until I heard two versions of it: For King and Country's version and Home Free's version. I think Home Free's rendition is probably my favorite.
I always come away from your analysis video with alot more knowlege and enyoyment. This is right at the top of my Home Free favorites !! HF has the best sound system and sound engineers so it sounds great and feels traumatic LOL at the live shows. I've felt him way up in the cheap seats because they really do have the best crew making sure the power is there when it's needed.

Chris talked about this when he reacted to it: when you were debating when Tim hit his second E1, the four vocalists actually doing the same phrase in four different octaves. Tim starts at an E1 growl (layered with it one octave up, he doesn't complete the "I say" in the first octave, but he does in live performances), Chris starts at E2 two beats later, Rob at E3, and Austin at E4 to cover five octaves in nine beats.
Easily one of their best arrangements, and it's crazier to hear it live.
really enjoyed this....glad you caught Tim's walkdown (actually, you really don't miss much and that's why I watch). When they did the "listen to what I say" with Tim, Chris, Rob and Austin (at 24:46) , they each came in an octave apart...Tim started in the sub-basement, Chris up 8, Rob up another 8 and then Austin on the roof. Very, very nice. Thanks for the always informative and entertaining video.

The Ice Castel moves every year it's built new at a new location it was freaking Cold the night they filmed this. poor Tim. Chris is a Baritone with tenor and Bass capabilities he just never felt he was consistent in his bass range. I think he's worked that out with 7th Ave and Cypress Fyre

All the members of this group are amazing, but Rob is one of the most beautiful tenors I have ever heard. His sound is like butter and pure. Just so yummy to listen to.
Before the growl, you can hear Tim go up with the tenors. Then drops several octaves to the growl.

Amazing analysis of this song Adam Rupp is mostly responsible for Home Free even existing very early on there were times Chris wanted to quit but Adam talked Chris out of it this arrangement by Adam showcases the talent of the entire group including Darren Rust their producer who records their songs.

I've seen others claim that when they're recording like this, they double-track Tim for the bass and Chris/Adam Chance just lip-synch for the video. But LIVE, Chris (in the past) or Adam Chance (now) will actually take over the bass.
In studio settings, Chance does take most of the bass when Tim sings lead, yes. But back when Chris was the baritone, it is indeed Tim that double-tracks in studio recordings, most of the time at least. It's rather obvious in some videos, especially the old video of "I've Seen", "Champagne Taste (on a Beer Budget)", and a few more.
For definitive proof, see Chris Rupp's reaction video on "All About That Bass", where he explains it at about 5:40. (Interestingly, "All About That Bass" is actually one of the rare exceptions where Chris takes the bass, and boy can he sing bass!)
But unlike VoicePlay who sometimes sing over a Geoff bass track live (most notable example being "Oogie Boogie's Song"), you're absolutely right in saying that Chris sang bass in live settings! My favourite example is "Thinkin' Out Loud", where Chris growls well into the 1st octave like it's no business haha.

My absolute favorite Home Free song. Best arrangement of any Christmas song, ever. I think that when you thought Chris was doing the bass while Tim was leading, it was actually a doubletrack of Tim. Chris says that in live performances he would take the bass, but for the studio version they would doubletrack because - well, Tim.
This song was written long before We Are The World. It was written back in 1962 and was actually a Christmas song about the Cuban Missile Crisis! There was an ubiquitous choral arrangement of it going around in the 70's, and every school choir was forced to do it. I personally hated this song until I heard two versions of it: For King and Country's version and Home Free's version. I think Home Free's rendition is probably my favorite.

I always come away from your analysis video with alot more knowlege and enyoyment. This is right at the top of my Home Free favorites !! I have seen this performed live at their Christmas show 3 times and it sounds Amazing !! Can't wait for you do more reactions to Home Free. I wish Adam Rupp would do more arrangements, their are so complicated I have heard that the guys shy away from them, hard to believe, but I LOVE this one.

The Ice Castle in the video is in the area around Minneapolis/St. Paul. Adam says in the outro that it moves around every year.
HF has the best sound system and sound engineers so it sounds great and feels traumatic LOL at the live shows. I've felt him way up in the cheap seats because they really do have the best crew making sure the power is there when it's needed.
