Something very satisfying with putting up plasterboard but the better the preparation the easier it goes.

exactly the plaster boarding you'd expect from a carpenter, nice neat cuts everywhere and no foam filled gaps. You're going to have to get some top plasterers in for that ceiling, constantly cleaning the beams and all the tight angles, doesn't look like a fun one 😄
I’d give anything to work with this man for a year or so even at the age of 42 I know the knowledge that would rub off would be invaluable, legend
Beautiful work chaps….. I’ve gone a slightly different route with insulation between and over the rafters….. The rafters completely isolated from the outside world and no insulated plasterboard… it introduces a different set of problems, so horses for courses at the end of the day…

Spent a good few years of my plastering life doing 'Cottage Style' homes for WestBuild .... Slopey Ceilings, Gable Windows & Oak Beams everywhere they could ... Sometimes the Chippie would be on another job and I'd have to do the tacking and work out all those dodgey angles - Thankfully - they were the days of Hessian Scrim 😂🤣😂

Taken a few notes from this but one thing I will add if you’re looking for top neatness is using a straight edge to mark where the rafters/ joists are on the plasterboard in once a few screws can hold it up. Just adds to the complexity you can add to the job

How functional is that aluminum surface when it goes one face up and one face down? Should not be pointing towards the room only with 25-30mm space to work as reflective surface? To my knowledge all reflective surfaces have a really high SD value(over 1500) and it doesnt allow vapours inside the structure. In your case it seems like the vapours will be trapped and it will migrate towards the rafters. Could you please clear that for me Robin? Also big thanks for all your work online!
I take this technique could be used to re-line a normal ceiling?

I was always told by a slabber from America 5 or 6 screws across the slab on the ground is plenty any more and you start to weaken the slab.. it can cause pops.... just an observation ...and I know that's insulated board.. but you should use washers on some of them
Would it be necessary to use washers with the plasterboard screws? Or are they only necessary for a certain depth of board?
We only ever use plasterboard screws and never washers, we use washers on soft material such as thin layers of PIR or some shower/wet area boards
Im guessing ders no need to put discs on d screws for insulated boards so is that just adding more work
Metal angle on edges where no rafter to catch board is a great tip.
It works so well too!! this is a Dry lining angle and they are super cheap... about 70p per metre!!!
@@ukconstructionI'm keen to find out exactly rhe type of angle trim that is. Is it a gypsum product? . I have issues insulating a dormer where a insulated wall meets a lower ceiling at odd angle and need something to fix end of plasterboard sheet to.
nice one robin, what is the blade you used? often thought it would be a time saver to cut plasterboards etc with the track saw. ill assume the same blade can cut those cement based boards that tilers use on shower areas etc
Hi Paul, this is as you suggest for cutting cement based boards, I have a few in my Amazon store, If its for a TS55 then this is a good entry level blade amzn.to/3U1ZikP
@@ukconstruction thanks robin, yea id probably use one on my ts55. seems the best machine for stuff like that. be a better job than scoring and snapping them all the time. same goes for standard plasterboards also. ill pick one up and it can stay in the box till its needed

what is is the idea behind the ground offset @ 45 degrees @ 1200 high (approx I don’t know your desired back box heights ) that you have offset from the wall with a back box placed on it placed beside the 45 degree door opening for? Very intriguing….. 😅

Out of curisoirty why did you not have to install a VCL on the roof, like Protect VC Foil Ultra? I'm having to do 140mm in between + 40mm overboarded, VCL, 25 mm strapping then plasterboard. BC weren't happy with anything else. I was honestly watching the video to see if you had put the partitions up before or after the roof VCL but you don't have one :D Thanks in advance, love the videos!
Great Question, It depends very much on the overall construction build up, we did technically have a VCL as the insulation on the back of the plaster board is a VCL as it is foil backed, we also had a clear vented space from Eve to Ridge over the main PIR insulation between the rafters and the Roof covering over the external OSB roof decking is called Evalon by Alwitra and believe it or not it is Air Permeable!!! mind blowing I know, Different parts of the country, Local authority or Building Control region will have variations too!!
Hi Robin, is it possible to dab (or foam) insulated plasterboard straight onto an existing plastered wall without hacking of the original plaster?
Absolutely, as long as the wall is well primed, usual drywall adhesive should be fine, some foams work too

Out of interest why have you got the main PIR a few mm up from bottom face of rafter? Expected to see it flush and then taped? (I note the gapo though!)
I leave a small gap the principal is like double glazed windows, it also serves as a small space to run a cable or two, Gapo eliminates the need for a tape at this point, there is the insulated plasterboard that has a foil vapour barrier on the back that does the job of foil tapes etc

Robin bit off topic but as an apprentice joiner I'm trying to understand how to read drawings I've bought multiple books and watched alot of UA-cam none of which are helping. Can you direct me where I can go to learn how to read construction drawings primarily first fix ?
Hi Leon, I had a quick look for a video that I could recommend but as you have probably discovered..... there is not much for us in the UK on UA-cam!!! I would be happy to help you, there are mainly basic symbols that apply to all plans and these are universal across Architecture (here in the UK) If you are not far from me then I would be happy to spend a couple of hours with you going through some plans etc!!!! in the mean time this is a useful book that I would recommend amzn.to/3F0I0QZ

Hi, can I ask where or what the vapour Barrier is?
The boards are a vapour barrier in themselves they are foil backed and providing they are well fitted and the surface is properly finished then they are perfect
I’m just doing something similar , I’m trying my hardest not to leave gaps between the layers of insulation 🤔 just curious what people think , I don’t remember where I heard it but heard it’s a bad idea to have gaps between vapour barriers where moisture can get trapped .. 🤔🤷♀️
No straight answer really…… it depends on what that moist air meets if it gets beyond your VCL…. If it’s a gap where there’s more insulation outside of it then the temperature is unlikely to have dropped enough for the moisture to condense onto the structure. In this case, the primary purpose of the insulation is to minimise thermal bridging of the rafters to the inside. The increase of the overall U value because of it is a happy by-product. Whatever moist air gets beyond that plasterboard won’t find conditions radically different the other side. Every construction is different and needs assessing on its own merits.

Tools don't make a tradie but boy they help. Your work is always high quality but so is your kit. That Festool set up is a second mortgage to most Carpenters. I went to an open day for a new tool shop. Most large tool brands were represented. There was a guy from Festool present. All the other stands were packed. The bloke from Festool stood alone. A lot of us just make do with a fraction of the kit you have and poorer quality. And living in rural Qld I never get to see most of the products either. When you have great tools. Good products and your skill. The sky is the limit. Average tools. Average products and skill. You do your best.
So true Dave, in most cases the same result can be achieved with more basic tools and the old saying was "a good Craftsman never blames his tools"!!!

Why don't uk plasterers use plasterboard adhesive as well as screws, here in Australia 🇦🇺 we use both which cuts down on stopping up
Why use both when you don’t need it?
All the manufacturers of insulated plasterboard that I’m aware of stipulate using noggins so that ALL edges of the plasterboard are supported, including those edges running perpendicular to the rafters - I see you’ve not done this - do you find it’s not necessary? Have you ever had any objections from building control when leaving the noggins out?
They often indicate in various fixing methods in their literature, in practice on site it is always fixed like the way we do it and it is a really strong board with the insulation on the back, if it was a normal board without insulation then you may need board join supports like you mention, indeed there are thicker plasterboards that will span up to 600 centres with no board join noggins I.e. 15mm thick boards!! What the manufactures do is make sure they cover any eventualities!! Trying to incorporate a board join noggin in a cold roof application without increasing the ceiling thickness even more or worse creating cold bridges is not sensible!!
That’s how plaster boarding should be done I cut my boards the same. Non of this fill it with dab rubbish

Long winded way to cut the boards if your on a price, probably end up losing money, ok if your on day rate
I have tackers that work on a price and that is all they do day in and day out, but the accuracy and standard of finish is just not what I need for perfect angled ceiling and wall junctions, and believe it or not my tacker gave me a price for this and we did it for less money in time and labour!!!
I’ll just nip out and buy all that equipment

Well we don't have one and it's pretty quick between two to just lift, hold and fix, if I was working alone then the hoist would be good!!
