Legit one day I was playing Halo: Reach. At the time I was 20, on a bunch of opiates and doing Firefight. Talkative 13 year old in the lobby is just trying to make friends, but nobody has mic or wants to engage. I plug my mic in and we just chat. He starts sticking close to me and we end up Army of Two'ing that fight while the quiet duo just keeps getting slaughtered. We barely clutch a victory. He's like " You're fun (My account name) - can I please add you? " - before the round ends and we get sent our different ways.
So, I sent him a friend invite, then I actually helped find him a good friend group of teenagers and I was like " Remember how you were struggling to find buddies? Look at you now. " - and he was just so excited to have people close to his age that waned to talk about movies, shows, Halo lore- it was great and it felt awesome to help a kid socially struggling. He had been so self conscious and nervous and I was like " There's your problem. You care too much about what jerks may say. They can just mute you if they don't like it. It's not hard. Don't be afraid to chat. Be friendly and friendly people will flock to you. "
Sure enough, I think he currently runs a small clan on Halo MCC specifically for " We just chill in party chat, game and make jokes. "
Super happy with how that ended. I thankfully never got into trash talking people on Xbox Live, just admitting when someone got the better of me and almost always they'd go " Nah man, you're better than me at some things. I'm sorry, but you're seriously still really good and it was a good fight. " - Because nobody sensible wants to be the douchey winner.

Man, you just unlocked some memories of the kind shit i did back in my hydro popping days that legit make me feel a bit less like I was a complete waste of human life back then. i met a dude when i was in 3rd grade on a cruise ship, i started the first ever convo with “so fo yall play fortnite? what do you think about the grappler?” it eventually led up to me asking for their usernames before we left the cruise, we’re 16 now and meet every summer, and it wouldn’t have happened without fortnite

One time two of my friends who lived next door in an apt, had their headsets plugged in but not on their heads. And i dunno if they thought they needed to be on their heads to work or not but they where screaming obscene shit at eachother through the wall, and their plugged in headsets, that werent on their heads picked up everything they screamed at each other. Said a bunch of trigger words and despite being in a public lobby with multiple strangers, and so many people they could have gotten into arguments with got both their accounts banned for a week for the convo they where yelling at each other through the wall. Listen people I will say this once again. Back in the late 2000s and early 2010s everything that people said or did on the Internet even through live chats said horrific things. At the time everyone thought it was really funny and it was considered "okay". Nowdays its not really okay to say. So for anyone who is "shocked" by this just so you know you were not around when this was going on.
Also, the stuff shown in this video is NOWHERE NEAR AS BAD as what was actually sent on a regular basis. Especially if you were perceived as being a girl.

3:00 i grew up hearing about the console wars, but tbh i also only grew up w a wii & was only allowed to play either minecraft or cod/zombies offline when on playstation, which after a few years we(older sis who owned the consoles) switched to xbox, so i never really had a strong opinion except that i prefer pc

As an Xbox player who has absolutely totally not said completely deplorable things in online games, you can’t find many types of people capable of saying unholy and offensive things on the same scale as an angry xbox player

Where my Gears of War 2 bros at? Oh sure we play some Halo 3, Reach, ODST, what have you, and CoD, everyone's got a few of those they hop into, but our real home was the wallbouncing, smoke tagging, gnasher-filled trenches of Subway, Gridlock, and Canals. Back then you'd see someone doing things that seemed to break the game, and if you were lucky someone would teach you how to do it, too, and we even formed clans online and you were most often in a party that filled your team's whole side. If you were alone and you ran into an organized team you pretty much knew you were gonna lose, but you could still come out ok on your personal k/d and stats, and win/loss wasn't that big a deal as far as xp gain went. In a party it was almost too easy, and you'd often get overshadowed if you weren't the best among your friends.
But it was like a playground or a prison, we were on our own as far as rules went, you did whatever the system would allow including boost lobbies (which were best avoided, it took all the fun out of gaining xp through play, but some games you don't want to put in the grind), glitch exploits, lag abuse, etc. One of the most fun things was finding people not even fighting, everyone had just sort of decided to have fun with the game physics instead and play around, but those were rare. God help you if you plugged in a mic, because if you think the text is bad, you do NOT want to hear our voices from then. Ah, memories. I hope you can see why modern multiplayer gaming just doesn't feel the same to us old heads. But if you recognize any of what I'm talking about, treasure it. These might be your good old days.
