BMW e30 turbo dyno with aluminium block m52b28: 490 hp

- Few dyno pulls with my e30 m52b28 turbo. In first pull it gave 490 hp @ 1 bar but the RPM information was wrong, so we didn't get real torque numbers. In second pull the RPM was correct, but it was lacking power. That was caused by trigger wheel almost falling off. But looking about the results, it looks like the first pull gave about 600 nm

I feel like I've seen this before.
Love the color, love the 316 badge. Great videos as always.
Yeah this is just small cut from the older dyno video I have, because it seemed that many people are missing the dyno results of my e30. Maybe because it's so long video or something.
absolutely love those wheels!
Awesome e30 My friend. I just started My first turbo BMW project, e39 m54b30 going to boost 1bar. Hopeing for some Nice Numbers :)
looking to swap an m54b30 into my e21 soon. hopefully will be able to make similar power!
Nice color
How much power gains with the m50b20 exhaust cam and 330 intake came without turbo ?
hey nice builds. does the stock head gasket and studs handle 10 psi boost and stay reliable?
Yes it will if the tune is ok.
The engine is m52 with iron sleeves right.
Question i have a m52 with nikasil sleeves can i drive 1bar without a problem.
And i have piston rods with 133mm instand of 135mm from the originals.
Very nice the first run what rpm was I would think less then 4500 rpm And wtf indeed on second run crank pulley got loose yes this is a common issue on bmw or sometime hard to get off lol maybe be use locktite ??? But I has to be a specific one forgot which one .
pazi88 I understand that the ARP bolts/studs don’t really work with the alu block, but I have found out that Raceware makes studs for the M54 block, for example. The main difference is that they thread deeper into the block than other studs. Do you have any experience with those or heard of someone’s good or bad impressions about them?
Suljetut alueet sitten erikseen :D
Hi, i have a question..just to clarify this is nicasil coated aluminium block right ? Its not later one mounted in e46 (which is iron sleved) ? I cheacked that in e36 were only mounted those nicasil coated..its realy impresive that You made over 500hp from this block. Wonder how much could handle stock m52b28 aluminium nicasil with just decompresion ?
Not nikasil coated but kinda middle model with same casting as nikasil block but with steel liners. But nikasil block is not a problem. We have also run it boosted without problem (even with stock headgasket) And my friend made 500hp using nikasil block. Also stock compression. Of course we run e85 which makes boosting much easier.
pazi88 thanks for answer, basicly i was thinking about buying car with m52tu with steel liners but my goal is around 350hp with decompresion and cars with TU engines are almost 2x more expensive than those older ones. Besides if i would want to make real power i would use iron block from m50. Its realy impresive to see car making 3x stock power with basicly all used parts sourced from bmw
If you run stock ecu and tune it, you don't need to lower compression ratio for that kind of power level because of the good knock detection in those.
pazi88 i see, so basicly at around 0.5-0.7 bar of boost i should get this kind of power i want without need of using stand alone or piggy back..good to know ;) i will propably also use holset hx35 because they are cheap and reliable. For street use with lsd i think it should be enough...if not i will change transmision to 6 speed, drivetrain from v8 e39's and propably use some v8 with supercharger or turbo
Hello, how is this engine holding up ? i think i will rebuild my m52b28 with m50 connector rods and m50b20 intake cam on exhaust etc, is this better than stock? and aswell should i mount the valve springs from the m50 engine aswell or is this not needed? how is it to do the timing with this camshaft? regards
Kjetil It's still fine. But I haven't driven this for over a year because I haven't got time. Yes it's better cam but just changing that doesn't do much. The intake cam itself is more restricting one you should swap that first. No need to change valve springs. M52 has lot better springs than m50nv. Check my m52 turbo winter maintenance videos for cam timing.
Hello guys!I have a question for you Pazi88.After research I have found that the intake cam of M50B20nv and M50B25nv have the same duration and lifting but they have different open and close degrees.Which you think is the best of two for a hot cam swap in a stock M50B25tu?
Stratos Athanasiou Doesn't matter. You need to degree the cam by using dial gauge anyway. So the stock timing square can't be used.
pazi88 Thanks for the fast reply! What kind of machine work need to fit the camshaft?
What gearbox? Getrag? Congratulations for such Nice Project
Thanks! Regular ZF s5d-320z
Hey I have an E38 728i with M52TUB28 engine. Do you think it is a good idea to turbo it?
If it's your only daily, then no. But if you have other car to drive, go for it :D
How were you able to mount the head to the M52 block without stripping the threads? Great build!
using stock m52 headbolts.
What about the threads in the block? 🙈🙈
Andi Selaj Those are fine. The threads may strip if you overheat the engine very badly. (like pop radiator hose and continue driving without coolant) So don't do that :D
Thanks, this is an eye opener. On some forums i read, lots of members post about how easy the threads can be stripped and recommend to not turbo m52 alu block.
Yeah that is what some say without having any experience from alu-blocks :D With stock blots and no overheating and you will be fine. The ARP etc. bolts are no-go because those will strip the threads more easily. But with stock bolts and proper headgasket you can go up to 1,5 bar of boost. Which is about 500-600hp at the crank.
What CR you have ? Also..if i put a m52b28 crank in a m50b25 engine what cr will i have ? Cause i have those parts laing next to me . But i wonder if i dont need m52b28 pistons aswell
stock 10,1:1 compression ratio. Well you need b28 pistons or rods depending which m50b25 you have. With non-vanos m50b25 you will need b28 pistons and with vanos engine you will need shorter b28 connecting rods.
pazi88 i have a m50b25 non vanos
So yes. You will need b28 pistons also.
pazi88 thanks for reply!
What turbo you use? And what how height the gasket is?
Holset hx35 and athena cooperring headgasket
what do you mean by saying "upgraded vanos" in description? What did u upgrade. There's nothing to upgrade there :))
This m52 engine had the old m50 style ratling vanos unit and I upgraded it to later m52 style vanos by changing few parts. Mostly to get rid of the vanos ratle.
+pazi88 was the block tineserted?
+Andrew Askins No it's not. Stock block.
What clutch set up you used? Need some detailed info so i know what to get. Thanks!
I have billet flywheel for sachs sre-765 pressure assembly which is for old m5 and e36 328 clutch disk with that.
@@pazi88 m5 e34?
@@GamerPacanas yes.
@@pazi88 thanks, well i got single mass flywheel from m50b20 is there any pressure plate and clutch disk thats compatible with it that can keep 350-400hp? I seen someone use diesel pressure plate but not sure if its gonna fit my flywheel, aswell not sure for what clutch disk to go aswell. Sorry for asking alot, thanks for answering.
@@GamerPacanas That's really shitty flywheel. Weights same as dualmass flywheel, only 228mm and there are no better pressure assemblies available for that. Throw it into metal recycling and get for example e36 328i/e39 528! dualmass and new stock (sachs/luk) clutch set for it (maybe 50€ for used flywheel and 150€ for clutch set) and it's enough for that hp level.
What color is your car? Is it a bmw color? I really like it and my e28 needs a paint job lol
Yes it's BMW color: Sepang Bronze (A32)
awesome thanks! car looks great, awesome wheels man!
Paljonko tähän on mennyt kokonaisuudessaan rahaa?
It seems to be a prices/costs list. Can you short translate it in to english? I'm thinking about to put turbo 0,6 to 0,8 bar in to my e30 m20b25. It will be nice to know the comparison for costs. Many thanks mate!
Sure, no problem: Engine 600€, turbo 650€, exhaust manifold 300€, engine management 500€, injectors 300€, wideband lambda 200€, fuel system 300€, flywheel 300€, clutch, 300€ clutch disk 100€, gearbox 100€, bearings 140€, piston rings 100€, head gasket 300€, intercooler 150€, wastegate 200€ + lot of small stuff. Prices are about what I paid in € But 1€ is about 1 usd.
Stock internals? Iron sleves?
Yeah all stock instead of the m50nv connecting rods. The block is the version with steel sleeves
I will do forge pistons and rods next year maybe, and get iron sleves on my m52
U're running it on E85?
Yes I am.
Since M50 engines are getting pretty expensive, I'm now thinking of swapping an M52B28 into my E30 with the idea of eventually turbo charging it, but isn't it a problem that the block is aluminum?
No it's not a problem. Maybe if you wan't like 1000hp but for normal turbo setup it's fine. This engine has now made 17k with basically stock bottom end and made 557hp on latest dyno.
@@pazi88 Thanks a lot man! I surely don't want to push the limits. I hope to eventually get my E30 up to around 350hp ;)
@@pazi88 so if i want to have it stock on my e30 do you think its reliable for drifting?
@@starboybmx268 well yeah why not. I know many guys running stock m50 and m52 engines in race cars and no problems
@@pazi88 did you swap the internals ?
what thermostat are you using ?
Duarte Santos Stock one.
im having some circulation problems and i already change the thermostate
the rear axle is stock????????????????????? good cars
Almost stock 325 rear axle. The diff is typ188 lsd from e34 325tds because it uses 2.65 rear end ratio and I have also added e36 back cover for it.
did you sleeve this block ?
Factory sleeved block.
I have a m52b28 single vanos with iron block from m50 stock internals .with 98 octane its safe 1bar boost?
Duarte Santos honestly i wouldn't give 1 bar a shot on stock compression use ethanol or octane booster or lower compression by a mls headgasket. 0.140" and u can push 1.2 bar safely on 98octane
sorry i forget i have arp head studs and cometic head gaskest 0.80". thanks!
can i get 400hp?
thing is ull knock ur engine but u wouldn't lift the head or blow ur head gasket! u shouldve went with 0.140 mls for lower compression. u have 3 solutions:
-methanol injection, octane booster, ethanol, lower
-lower compression pistons
- or just remove crank upgrade to 3.0 then run 0.8 bar
best choice in my opinion are either methanol injection or octane booster. methanol injection would be a better long term plan and will cost the same as upgrading to 3.0 less than lower compression pistons and would yeild results like ethanol sooo go with meth injection
the benifit of methano kit is that u can keep high compression for good response and use high boost. but if u want garanteed 400 wheel hp for life go change ur gasket to 0.140 or 0.120 will cost the same or even less with the 0.140 u can use 1.3 bar
whats a trigger wheel?
The toothed wheel in front of the engine.
Has it been reliable? Also, not daily driver correct?
Mitchum Pacifico It's daily driver at summer and there has been no problems at all.
Decent, what did the engine build alone cost? Considering all options for current swap, whatever proves to be most cost effective I'll go with of course
you buy a oil coller kit?
Duarte Santos I'm using s50 oil cooler parts.
thanks pazi
what fuel are you using?
e85
I thought and was always told that ethanol was corrosive to the engine?
+Michael S In theory it's corrosive for some parts. For example untreated aluminium. But in practise only thing that can't handle ethanol is normal rubber fuel lines. But mine are made to use with ethanol so No problem.
you have aluminum block no? I'm doing a e36 328is turbo build soon and I'm not so sure what fuel i want to use. I have access to 99 octane bc i live by a private airport. I see the benefits of e85 but the only place to get it is at sheetz (american gas chain) and its quite pricey
Yes i have alu block. And the e85 isn't feasible if there is not easy access of it. In Finland you can get it in almost every city and it's much cheaper than normal pump gas.
is there a difference between a 328i and 328iA Block ?? not really huh :D
No there isn't :D The wiring loom is different so I had to modify that for manual use.
+pazi88 ok i have also swapped from auto to manual but i keept the old cables just put the plate from the autoshifter to Position P , works great ;)
That's one way to do it :D I wanted neat and tidy wiring so I took apart the whole loom, removed what I don't need, modified it to manual use and made it fit e30.
+pazi88 yes thats the way it should be ;) very nice
3/4 ahtimella Sierra jättää tuon ;)
vsssst pfpfp!
What rims are those
E30 bottlecaps coverted to 3pcs
e85 ???????
Yes.
Total cost of build? :D
Mitchum Pacifico Engine was only few thousand €. But cost of complete rebuild of the car was something like 15-20 thousand €.
How can i get contact with u?
