Oh hey I'm finally done with this beast!!!! Took forever to collect all the art and edit these in order man, hope you guys dig it! 💀 This time I took a peek at the past and the video lays out everything that contributed to my career life going from zero to professional artist.
I would've died for a video like this when I was just starting out (as you'll understand if you check out the vid!) so I hope this will help younger artists that are in the same spot, looking to get an idea for the potential career ahead. Of course everybody's path is different, vastly different, but if it can help you maybe avoid some mistakes I made, or help you make better decisions, then mission accomplished :)

So inspiring *-* Really helpful! BUT... if you think back and have to pick 1 thing that you did learn at art school... what would that be? Or was it really a waste of time ;-;
Valkorey Arts Really happy to hear :) My main takeaway from it was art history- really enjoyed that class (even though nowadays you can easily find all that info here on UA-cam). Helped me appreciate art more if anything and I’m glad it was forced on us. Art-wise the level was just too low and none of the teachers ever demoed anything, they would just tell us what to do showing art from previous students. I was learning far more on the different art forums I was on at the time. It was super fun overall but not for the right reasons, not for the art.

Don't worry too much about it. I also began doing digital art when I was 16-17 back in 2008. You grow into it over time. :)

I have started when I was 25 and now I'm 27 and with artschool program I make at least decent art I think :) I guess 1 more year and I will be able to work professionaly so it's never too late
Not at all too late! In recent years I’ve spread myself pretty thin with business, art school, 3D and the real time I’ve had left for 2D hasn’t been much tbh. It’s just in the last year or so that I’ve turned the engines back on. It’s really in those early years between 16-19 that everything happened for me so it really doesn’t take that long if you can focus on it!
@@YTartschool You have no idea how much this means to me. Encouragement can go a long way. I only wish I could devote myself more to learing true concept, but between my job and my crappy animation school(which I'm only continuing to finish my mid-term degree) I only have little time to trully focus on your ART School.

I'm 17, only recently started into getting art. I can't afford your course, which sucks, but I've been spending so much time drawing doing the holidays it's insane. I kinda hate the fact that I started so late, cause I've always been interested in drawing, I occasionally drew some of my favorite media characters, but it's only now that I realized how amazing art is and how I desperately want to be considered an actual artist. I'm really trying, I'm working on my fundamentals, doing drawabox exercises, and also just drawing (or at least trying to). This video was kinda motivating, thank you.

You started earlier from my point of view I started at 24 but no matter the age just your dedication and discipline, so stay on the track and eventually you'll do great!
You don’t need to follow society’s ideals of what is “late”. Almost everybody who didn’t start at a prepubescent age feels this way at some point. But look in the grand scheme of things, 17 is hella young. Hope you’re still drawing!
You didn't start late at all. A lot of people who start in their 20s or 30s, heck even their 40s, can end up switching to a full-time art career if they just put in the work. I know it's hard seeing all these super talented 16 year olds on social media, because you feel like you've wasted your life. But just get started now and you'll be fine. Never too late to start!
watching this as a 19 years old gives me slight hint of sadness cause im waaaaay behind what you did when you were 19 but at the same time it kinda just brings my attention to the fact that there is so much more to learn and get better at,great video and incredible art!!!!!

Your art got so good at such a young age! How did you manage to teach yourself use of color and lighting during that time?
Most of it was copied so don’t give me too much credit! There wasn’t much help back then so I’d just try to copy color palettes, brush strokes, how they draw the muscles, how they simplified their faces, anything I could copy that looked better than what I could do myself

@@YTartschool Amazing, my brush strokes are really bad rn, the first digital painting you made in Photoshop blew my mind. I don't know how to use the brush properly and I'm still trying to learn it, do you have some tips on how I use the brush, I mean digitally of course.
@@larjudetablando7565 I would advise to ignore brush strokes completely until you can paint very close to accurate based on a photo reference. If you're trying to get that "painterly" look in digital medium, it really requires very accurate values & is not worthwhile to practice until you can do everything else at a high level. Unfortunately if students try to make intermediate paintings look "brushy" they tend to come across as messy.
If you're just looking for the best general tip for a beginner, I suggest first learning to paint everything with the simple round brush, pen pressure set to opacity &/or flow, with a fade/ edge/ softness of 0.8 (depends on what digital program you use). If you don't like how that looks so smooth bc it doesn't fit the type of subjects you paint (like, if you paint mostly environments instead of figures), you can use the chalk or pastel brushes that come with your art program.

wow, now I feel bad for myself, seeing how my life could have went if I wasn't such a lazy ass...
Seriously tho, what to do against this nonexisting ambition to improve or just do modeling at all. Almost 6 years ago I kinda liked it, now that I have finished my bachelor in 3D stuff, I just don't want to anymore.
I'm 29 now. I did some media art school at the age of 16-20. Then went into lazy mode for 3 years just playing video games all day long. Applied for many art study programs in my country, but never got accepted until I applied abroad. Abroad I started to study game development with a focus on the art side, basically what I always wanted to do. Did really good in this study, but only learned the basics of everything gaming related. I didn't specialized in anything and still don't really feel or don't know what to specialize in.
Currently having several freelance jobs going for games, but I just can't motivate myself to finish them early, fast and good. I always push them further and further into the future until the deadline is in 2 days, where I start working on it for 30 or more hours at a time, because otherwise I won't meet the deadline.
My clients are really satisfied with my work, but I am not at all with the way I work and the motivation I do not have anymore. This is going for almost two years now.
Nothing wrong with that, for a lot of people the amount of time I spent on my art is complete madness, everybody places different value in different things. If you value your time more when it's spent doing other things, then don't think anything bad of it. The curse of every artist is always comparing themselves with better ones, I do the exact same. I keep thinking I would be a much better 2D artist if I had done that instead of 3D for most of my career, but in retrospect I just didn't want to, and I'm cool with that.
Most of what we do in life is based on reward, so keep reminding yourself why you do what you do. It can be as simple as having a big poster over your desk with something that represents your goal. Maybe it's a big house, a supercar, a travel destination, whatever. A goal you can literally keep your eyes on every day. No goal, no motivation.
I'm currently 19 in the UK's best art university yet I still struggle to feel motivated sometimes and struggle to come up with quality work. But this video has given me some motivation so thanks I appreciate it 💯

My dream has always being an artist but at age 15 had to move out and my dreams and studies shattered. I am 19 now and not until now I found the motivation to continue with art. I live alone in a shitty apt and a shitty job for 3 years now. I will continue with art but cant even start studies because I dont have the money for that. I think the only thing left for me is to just paint for me i guess. But that is why I Dont want you yo feel down. You are in good place to boost your carreer! Just keep moving forward!!
You are such a big inspiration, I am 33, and I found your channel 2 days ago, I’m a father of two that have always loved art. I’ve taken the path of graphic designer, but in the past 2 months, I’ve rediscovered that my true passion has always been drawing, so I took it up again, and started with procreate. I must say that I’ve learned so much in the past 2 days of finding your channel, I wish one day I can afford your full course and becomes one of your students. I guess all I want to say is Thank you, for giving us this amazing knowledge, you’ve inspired me to continue my art at the age of 33.

The hardest thing for some artist is making your parents support you. Some automatically support you but some just soo unsupportive at your dream.

That part with the parents telling you is just a backup plan happened to me to. After i spent half an year of 50 by 70 cm colored pencil drawing they acknowledged my dedication towards art and let me move to an art high school , where i am now. Ty you are a great inspiration.

Just guessing here but maybe-
It's not a path that's for everyone, just like how I realized computer science wasn't for me after years invested going into it. You'll know you found your passion when regardless of what people say or think of it, all you'll want is to learn more and get better at it. It's like falling in love, very similar feeling. If the slightest negativity turns you off, then maybe the relationship wasn't solid.
I have the same feelings, but do not give up when you see someone doing better than you!
You should not compare yourself with the others, because all people are different with different fate and temperament. Make your own way in your life!
You just need more practice and one day you will be even better!

Your art journey is really inspiring, I realised art as a career when I was 19 in 2019, I was an engineering student then . Now I'm 21 graduated from my engineering college and got my first job as a concept artist in outsourcing company. Your videos has helped me a lot in the last 2 years. Whenever I felt down I would watch your video to get an instant boost of inspiration, I still do.

One really gets the impression that the art career you went through was smooth sailing but there must have been obstacles that you went through as well. I feel like I'm a bit late to the game in terms of age but I will continue to keep working hard everyday as much as I can and try to tune out voices of doubt, be it from external influences or from my own head. Dude, this is really amazing. You're really talented and on an entirely different level of art. Just looking at your early art that you did in high school is mind blowing. Funny enough your journey is kinda similar to mine, except that I'm not that talented and successful. Thanks for sharing your story, might as well share mine.
I loved drawing a lot, and felt like it was my "special power", you know people around always said that I'm really good and because of that I felt proud and that I could do anything. Similar to you I thought that drawing won't help me to earn money and support my family, so drawing was just a hobby for me and I just had a plan to become a scientist, earn a nobel prize and draw in free time. But, as the adult life got closer and by the time I finished high school I was at loss of thoughts, I wasted all my time just studying, got really good at chemistry, biology, physics and even earned a gold medal (in Russia they give you a gold medal if you have excellent marks on every subject).
Even if I was successful at studying, it all became meaningless to me and boring, but I knew that it was my life now and I have to give it all. After finishing school I enrolled at a Medical University in Vladivostok which is a big deal, and my folks were really proud of me.
And that's when I started realizing that maybe I chose the wrong path, I didn't feel happy studying all the time, sleeping for four hours and then studying the whole day. The first year in medical university was tough, but I got excellent marks on the exams, everything was great, but I felt empty. I felt like if I keep going my life will make no sense and I will be surrounded by numbers, theories, books.
So I've decided at that time that I should quit the university, even though it would be going against the stream, against the will of my parents, trashing everything that I achieved and return to level 0. It took me two years to come up with a courage and strength to do this, and so I did. I quit university, I was 21 by that time, because of that I was enrolled in the Russian army, it's mandatory.
I had to waste one year in the army, it was hell of a time, but guess what? In the army I sold my drawings for 500 RUB (6.40 USD), people wanted me to draw portraits, but I didn't know how to draw portraits, so I intuitively had to learn, I wasn't really successful but people liked these drawings, so it's wasn't that bad, a few sergeants even bought me colorful pencils, and because of that I started drawing a lot, the whole year I sneaked to the classed where we learned and drew while other soldiers slept.
After army I started drawing digitally with a tablet, and since then I keep watching your videos and draw every once in a while. My deviantart has at least 40 measly followers who aren't even active I think :D, don't have any fans, don't have the necessary skills, but I still draw, it makes me happy, even if only my friends appreciate what I do. My parents hate me, my teachers despise me, everyone around me think of me as an idiot and a moron who threw his future away, but it doesn't matter to me.
I'm 23 years old, work day and night, draw on a tablet every day in my free time, got no education besides high school, I don't know what my future will be, but I'm proud to say that I'm an artist, and this is my sense of life, as long as I can draw - I am happy.
Currently a 15 year old and I’m planning on working as a concept artist or illustrator, but the thing is, I’m in a country where being an artist is looked down upon thus there’s not much opportunities given to artists ~.~ I’ve always wanted to pursue my art career and I’ve been thinking a lot about it ever since I took art seriously.

Going back and seeing how much you changed your style is mind boggling. You are amazing! Art is every changing like the world, but your ability to adapt is speechless.
Going from your native country, to the U.S, and all from your art and never stopping. I can relate to your story, even in the past cities and crappy jobs I had, I never stopped. Nothing will ever express that feeling the advancing man gets as he keeps pushing forward.
I'm 15 and I also decided to become a full-time artist but I'm still lost on where ill go.. so for now im just practicing as much as I can while doing commissions :^)
Thank you Marc, this video inspires me a lot. I started drawing when I was 5/6 and never improved or developed any art skills because I was too lazy and insecure about my art. But recently, I'm starting to learn art fundamentals and digital painting slowly but surely. I'm 26 right now and I have wasted so many years of potentials and opportunities to learn art, but I'm sure and have faith to myself someday i'll get there. Better late than never.

In my case (im 30 now), i always wanted to learn how to draw and make a living of it, and sometimes i feel like i'll never make it because of my age. But now I decided to give it a shot, and looking to suscribe the Marc's Art School at the end of the month. Thanks for the inspiration. D:

I like drawing but I also want stability in my life. So I will always have it just as a hobby and have my main job as a clerk.
Nothing wrong with that, often that's how it begins and then the art ends up taking more and more space until you feel confident enough with the workload to go at it full time. It's safe and you still leave the door open for opportunities :)
I liked drawing as a kid but never really drew anything else other than cartoon characters and tracing pictures from books. I drew (mostly traced) anime characters throughout high school and didn't really take art seriously. I only took it seriously when I was around 17-18 y/o (21 now) when I realized that art is my thing. I know that it's never too late to learn but I kinda regret not discovering my love for art earlier in my child/teen stage. I could've had a lot of time to really understand the fundamentals, practice and improve my skills, and be at a more advanced level at this age haha. Thank you for sharing this ❤❤

I'd once taken that "safe option" (networking) everyone always advised and while I do enjoy it, my passion is,p and has always been drawing and creating art.
I feel like I'm constantly trying to catch up with barely the time to do so. I hadn't even touched photoshop until I was about 25 lol. Then I finally got my first drawing tablet in late 2018 for my 27th birthday. Spent most of the year 2020 depressed and demoralized, unwilling to create.. but alas, I found your channel and really liked your quirky but fun, easy to follow content.
So here I am, back on the horse again, willing to push this thing as far as I can.
Your art is inspiring as always Marc, I can't wait to see more!

Art is in my blood. My grandfather was an amazing painter. He did very good scenic water color paintings. He actually became one of the leading team members of his company he worked at as a lithographer. (Basically the guys who made logos and box art for other companies; for example, wheaties boxes back in the day). Yet here I sit at 26 seeing all the amazing artists all over the internet and see that they've been drawing from 4 years old and up and put in the time and effort. As I've gotten older I've started feeling a longing to be able to draw something amazing, but I always find myself getting demotivated. By life, by work, by other hobbies... I feel like there's always an excuse to not draw. Staring at a blank page is one of the hardest challenges for me to try and overcome.
Edit: well I just watched your secret of learning video, I feel a lot better and think it definitely explains a lot of my issues
I have worked as game programmer for seven years in the past. It was fun, working with game artist and game designer on our projects. Watching how they make digital art and game assets. Then the studio decided to lay off many of its employees, and the working atmosphere was changed, not so enjoyable anymore.
Now I already left my job, and working on different fields.
Sometimes I practice drawing in my spare time, and still trying to improve my skill, also I'm learning to make vector art.
No matter what Marc....ZBrush still loves you!

It is hard not to compare myself to others, apparently but, I see you had bigger struggles and came a long way to established yourself.

Hello Marc! Thanks for sharing your story. My parents weren't encouraging on me going to art school so I ended up earning a bachelor in science. I got a decent job but I am still unsure if I made a right decision. Then a couple of weeks ago I discovered your channel and learned about the art school program. It was very encouraging to learn that it's never too late to pursue a career in art and you don't really need an art degree to become a designer. Your art school program is really helpful for the basic learners like me :) I wish there were more assignments however.

I’m in Highschool and my parents keep signing me up for Computer Science classes and want me to be a computer scientist.
H_roon 23 tbh they have the right idea, computer science will pay you more and it’s a fast expanding industry so you’ll always find work (hell I hope my own kids end up in computer science, I’m just like your parents)- but yeah if your true passion is art then that’s a tough sell. If you show them results (as in making *some* money from your art) early on, you have better chances to bring them on board the art path ;)

Lol I was told art isn't a REAL job too. Always loved it growing up, but became a nurse instead. 8 years later I'm realizing I hate my job and wished I would've stuck with practicing my art more. I've lost so much time, but I'm picking it back up again thanks to your tutorials. Keep up the great work!

As a kid and teen I loved drawing every day, played guitar, as a young adult I lived in… dire situations. 38 Still draw… well scribble but here and there but have low self confidence in any all aspects of life. Been watching you, proko, and several others for a couple years now and I wanted to say I appreciate your commentary. You make me want to really get back into it. I love the fallout game series… well loved it’s kind of a love hate relationship these days. I have my own fan creations in my head and would love to get them out on paper. Anyhow. HELLO MARC. thank you very much for inspiring me to pursue art as a career with this exact video. I watch your videos religiously but this one hit really hard today. I am currently 28 and over the past year I learned so much and made so much progress, to the point where I feel like I can have a shot at this still. I am purely traditional because im broke so my porfolio is my sketchbook (if thats a bad idea lmk). I dont want to ask questions that I can find out for myself, so I just posting this here as a thank you. I wish I could show you my sketchbook myself to the artist that inspired me the most on youtube.

Have allways had a hard time doing regular work, industies, was a truckdriver, storage worker, carpainter, and so on. Now in my 30th year on this planet I decieded I wanted to work in some kind of form with digital art, bought myself a wacom and made a move from traditional art to digital. Next year I'll hopefully will get accepted to the uni for a yearlong course in digital design. Not trying to dream too big since I allready have two wonderful women in my life, my fiance and our daughter. But hopefully this will all go good so I can work in design and fill up the rest of the time doing my own art and maby make a small sum of cash from it. Just need to grow my social medias so I can make myself a name! Sorry for the bad spelling, I'm swedish and dyslectic.

That path you mentioned in the beginning about getting a computer science degree and later going into video game development is where I'm at.
I got the degree, worked 5 years at a pretty good job, except I was in a rut with a web development job I don't enjoy very much anymore and didn't follow my true passions very much.
Trying to follow my passions more now and practice art, 3D, and game development.

i love this. i'm a 3D artist and i love to hear others stories. it's so inspiring. also grateful and lucky to be able to do my art fulltime. its about always keeping that passion alive then the money will come and it sounds like you really made the best decisions to keep your passion alive

I’m 26 and just got my associates in graphic communications as a part time student. Took me longer than I want. I’m still dipping my toes in various fields of the creative industry. Right now it’s graphic design but later I would love to get into the entertainment industry with movies, television, and games. Thanks for sharing your story and for the great lessons. i love seeing these videos, cause they motivate me. i’m 15 y/o and ive been doing art for 3 years and ppl always tell me i would need to study something else besides art to make my money in the future but all i ever wanna do in the future is art. This gives me hope to pursue my dream tysm!✨
Pro tip: only ever listen to people who know what they're talking about, aka people with direct experience on the topic. Keep it up, at your age the sky's the limit if you put in the practice. It takes a bit of sacrifice of course, can't expect to get great unless you put in a great amount of hours into it.
Another pro tip, you should aim to impress your parents first if they're not too sure about it (they want the best for you, if you can PROVE them with results that art is the best for you they'll always be on your side). If you can bring them on board with your desired career, it makes everything 100000% easier.

I just do drawing here and there mostly for school, but i'm interested in learning how to draw better as well as digitally. It's not something I think I will pursue as a career, but as a hobby it's something I find really fun. I am progressing very slowly with my pencil drawings, but hey, you've gotta enjoy the process

I'm 29, still haven't had that boom, but since the pandemic I started dedicating my time to my art (which I stupidly only thought as a hobby, because u know parents and stuff)... I've never been happier in my life and even re-lit that passion I had when I was 16.
I got into digital art probably when I was 12 yrs old, with a bad laptop and wacom bamboo pen and touch tablet. Currently, I have a discontinued wacom intuos tablet. Fortunately, im about to get a cintiq 16 thanks to your videos mark, and really try to rake in commissions and projects on Fiverr, so thank you so much for being such an inspiration to me. I love watching all your videos and trying tips you give. Your environment video has seriously done the most for me, and I've been able to start working with a MTG youtuber to make proxy cards now, with me being 20 yrs old

I have to say this is amazing and mindblowing. I stopped drawing and pursuing in art when I hit my sophomore year of high school. I am not sure why. I honestly loved art so much and I always have. I just remember the last time I ever worked on a piece of art was painting. I am now 27 and looking back and thinking why I didn't keep pursuing it. So thank you Marc for being such an inspiration !
I always drew aswell and stopped completely during highschool like you. Im 28 now and found out I have always wanted to do this and been lost before. If you want to pursue it! do it! You absolutely can. I am no where near the level I wish I was at this age, but the progress i've made since critically learning a year ago makes me believe I got this shit! haha

I started pretty young when it came to arts, I was just heavily influenced by my dad and sister, and I'd say I really don't have the talent, I just worked my ass off.
I just started doing commissions last year, and I was 18 at the time, it was pretty easy to find clients because they really liked my clean lineart and pastel colors but holy crap you are insane, you make me want to push myself more, but it's so hard, considering I can do this as a job but I can't drop out of school.
You're such an inspiration, I hope to make it big someday, but for now, I'll just stick to making pocket change out of commissions
When I was really little I also drew many awkward ocean scenes! haha. You should redo some of those, 2:35 could've been pre-concept art for Death Stranding! ;)

i wonder if Marc ever had problems just focusing on art, I'm so bad at focusing it's just unreal, okay i'm not that bad at focusing but i want to be laser focused because i seem to get distracted like every minute due to random thoughts in my head, from the way he explained it, he seemed to be focused throughout multiple years just coming up with new works weekly. Also it sucks that youtube doesn't pay you much, i've heard Google Adsense is basically shit, if you're rreading this Marc, maybe it'd be a good idea to sell your own Merch, i've heard that's how a lot of youtubers really make money.
I can advice you to listen to music while you're doing art, it REALLY helps me to not distract to my thoughts

@@Lu-ik8zz Well, thanks to the pandemic I had to reinvent myself a bit and earn money in other ways so drawing has been gaining much more importance in my life, I have tried to maintain a balance studying and working on things related to drawing and thus not wasting valuable time that I do not have (at my age many people already have an incredible level), I have been dedicating this year and the previous to studying and practicing while I work, everything as preparations to reach an industrial level while work helps me understand how to get better jobs And what to do when my prep time is up.
I recommend you follow professional artists who are already where you would like to be, many of them do live on Twitch or upload videos here on UA-cam (Marc is a great example) explaining how everything works and giving very good advice, pay close attention to what they do and say is the best thing you can do to try to save time by avoiding making some mistakes.
Books, tutorials and advice from professionals are your best friends because you will need a lot of time to practice, there are many stories that let you see that it is still possible (although in other ways) but time is not unlimited, you have to make an effort And focusing, making a plan, and targeting something specific will help you move forward even faster.
Regarding my drawing improvement, it is relative, it depends on each person since not all of us realize things at the same speed and it is more complicated if you study on your own, I can say that this way you are playing in HARD mode.
damn im also going through the same thing when it comes to studying something else, my mom knows i love art but she said i should study something else as a back up plan and so this august i entered the university to study industrial engineering and i didnt know shit about it so it doesnt surprise me that by the beginning of october i stopped entering classes and thanks to my boyfriend for waking me up and made me realize that i was crazy for thinking of studying industrial engineering for 5-6 years i left the uni and i just went toget my papers back and now im thinking ofstudying graphic design where my brother lives....dont let others make you to do stuff you dont want, remeber as long as it makes you happy then it doesnt matter if others get mad its your life and you cant relieve it so do what makes YOU happy...
