Blades vs Hollow Body Irons! - Takomo 301 MB vs Takomo 101T

- It's easy to want to use the same clubs as professional golfers. But that might not be the best idea for most golfers. The Takomo 301 MB Irons are our classic blade iron and what most people expect pros to be using while the 101T Irons are our hollow body iron's that are more forgiving and a better fit for most golfers.

Back when I was working as a club tech, and was involved with some fitting, we were doing a fitting with a guy where we were comparing a players cavity blade with a super game improvement deep cavity back with a high COR, variable face thickness face. I still remember the impact stickers showing near identical patterns for each club. One shot centre face, one shot about 3/4 of an inch toeward. Same clubhead speed within 1 mph. The drop in ball speed from the centre shot to the toe shot on the CB was 5 mph greater than on the super game improvement deep cavity. That would make about a 7-8 yard difference in carry. That's how much tighter the dispersion would be with the deep cavity back with the variable thickness face.
So yeah, major game improvement clubs (and hollow bodies are even better at perimeter weighting than cavity backs. They are essentially iron shaped hybrids) can make a major difference in front to back dispersion. Its the difference between carrying that greenside bunker on a bit of a misshit, or ending up in the sand. So most average club level golfers are going to be better off with the 101Ts.

More 201 model content please! I’ve had mine for four months and they are as good or better than any club I’ve ever had. Been playing for over forty years and have had at least a hundred different sets of irons (don’t judge 😊) so my sample size is large. Seriously, the 201 is a great club, imo

I'm a 5 handicap and I absolutely love my Takomo 101T irons. They are insanely forgiving. I often find myself wondering if i would've been better off with the 201 or 301MB but I liked the look of the 101T more.
They are Garbage clubs I had a set for 6 months they look like a fat retardation of stupidness. I went with the Wilson Staff model 2021 model. I'm getting close to scratch

Just ordered a 2 iron for those 2nd shots on long par 5’s. Just received my 201 irons with kbs tour lite-x shafts and can not be happier. They are a lot light then my old clubs. And found I’ve had to drop back from a 8 iron to 9 iron hitting 140m. Can not fault them at all. Very pleasing to the eye at address

Im a keen believer in playing the clubs you love the look of. I have the shiniest srixon z965s and love them. I could maybe benefit from a more fame improvement iron for mishits but I don’t play for a living and if I miss the green I can chip which I love!!

Great video if you were to take your two worst shots away from the 101T and your two worst shots away from the 301MB - those are quite excellent dispersion ratios for each club. I'm in a similar position where my club head speed for 8 iron is around 100 mph, call contact is not my issue. I'm really leaning towards the hybrid set, with the pitching wedge through 7 iron in MBS and 6,5,4 in CBs...

If you take your very first shot out with the MBs as an outlier your front to back dispersion would be the same

Quick question for you. I’m about an 8 handicap, and never really invested in my clubs. I’ve played Taylormade R9s since 2009. I’m gonna order the 201s, as I want a bit more control w the forged feel.
The question is around shaft. Since I don’t upgrade often I don’t have a clue. I apparently have played kbs R 90s. I know my swing speed should be Stiff (actually borderline x), but would the kbs tour give me the feel I’m used to moreso than the tour lites? I watched your video on it, but would like to just go w what is similar to my past 15 years or so
The KBS Tour Lite S flex shafts are 100 grams as compared to the Regular KBS Tour S flex which are 120. So the Tour Lite would probably feel more like what you’re used to swinging.

Why do I just see lots of comparisons between the 301's and the 101t's? I love the 301cbs and would likely be what I'd buy, but the 201's exist, but never show up in these video comparisons.
The 101s and 101Ts are the most popular sets we sell which is why they end up being shown in a lot of the comparisons and because they are hollow body which is what a lot of golfers are using. But we totally agree that we need more 201 content! - Tim
Why not the 201s?? Isn’t that like RIGHT in your wheelhouse?
For this test I wanted to use the hollow body type of iron because that is the most popular type of irons for most amateurs. The 201s are great but they are a solid construction forged clubhead. Most weekend golfers aren’t using that type of iron at the moment. - Tim
@@takomogolfcompany Tim I think more of the question here is (I may be wrong) but why aren’t YOU playing the 201’s? You said you were kinda between the 101T and 301MB and that you were playing a combo set cause you liked them and I didn’t need the extra distance of the 101T, so wouldn’t the 201 be kind of perfect for you with the addition of some forgiveness and still have a lot of that workability too? I know the 201 isn’t as popular but it is an amazing set of irons, I love mine and I love my 301 (have the 301 combo in copper) but realistically the 201 is the better club for me I believe. If you just say “I just really love my 301 combo” cool I absolutely get that and that’s what matters. I just know for me if I’m going out and trying to play my best golf it’s the 201’s, if I’m just messing around and playing and working on my game I play the combo cause it’s just fun and in the end that’s what it’s all about. Sorry about the long winded question. Also, can’t wait for the putters!
