I’ve been watching the TMNT since the late 80s when I was kid…Rise, to me…is probably the best interpretation of them…Splinter has his own arc within the story, the Shredder will body any other the series has to offer…I couldn’t understand why people hated it…

Mmm but the counter argument can and will be “why can’t a show TRY to cater to both”? As has been demonstrated by many cartoons past and present, kids shows can have excellent writing that pulls in adults along with kids treating the audience with respect

@@brandonspencer5594 and I'd say there's a difference between catering to fans and just giving fans exactly the same thing they've had for 35 years with no deviation. Rise has tons of call backs and nods to fans of the previous show while still maintaining its own identity.
'87 decided the turtles are the party dude, the hot head, the nerd and the leader. (Splinter is the wise old sensei, and April ISN'T BLACK) so fans decided that's all the characters can be forever. Rise took the characters we love, gave them actual personalities beyond their single established character traits, depth and even character arcs. You'd think that kind of evolution would be welcomed by fans but if "catering to old fans" means just stuffing the same homogenized slop down their throats I'm glad Rise dared to be different.

I feel like a lot of the show’s downfall is out of context as well. Many people criticize it for its goofier behavior at first, but it was revealed recently by showrunners that they wanted to go deeper into lore and plot, but Nickelodeon wanted them to go goofy- and when that didn’t work out they ordered more heavy episodes, and when that was already too late (and an untimely merger) they eventually tanked the show.
There’s a lot more I could go into- I could basically write an essay myself on all the mishandling the network did on this production- but rise really is such a genuinely incredible show and if you are a turtle fan disinterested because of differences but still wanna give it a chance I’d say don’t go into it as a turtle fan but as someone who wants to engage with animation and animated media. I’m a fan of all different tmnt iterations, and rise has definitely won me over.

As someone who has watch almost every form of TMNT media whether it's from the classic 80's cartoon to all the other reboots that came before it, this for me maybe my personal favorite representation of the turtles. Like I said I have seen so many iterations of the turtles- 2d,3d,CGI,live-action,comics,anime every known TMNT that's out there being in 1 big multiverse and I have love/like each everyone of them(yes that includes the crappy Venus show too) And for show like Rise it was no exception.
I felt that same way back when the rebooted 2003 TMNT series came out and I at first didn't like it and it wasn't much the same like the classic 80's cartoon, but overtime I grew to love the series and the other new series that came before that(2012). And in no matter what version of the turtles that are in I will still be fan regardless because I grew up loving TMNT❤🧡💙💜🐢🐢🐢🐢

What I love most is that each turtle is unique. You can actually tell them apart aside from their headband color. It's funny, has some of the BEST animations I've ever seen, and has a lot of heart. Never before have I actually watched any TMNT iteration, but Rise has death grip on my heart strings, and I really hope more people wil come around to love this show. The amount of love and creativity that the creators and the fandom have for this series is unlike anything I have ever seen, pretty much everything this seres does - it excels at it:
    - the FIGHT SCENES, no other animated show can even come Close to these dynamics, action-packed punches, camera absurd movement and the m o v e s
    - family dynamics are so perfectly spot-on that I can`t even think of a series to compare them to. We have everything - protective older brother, disaster twins, the Baby TM of the family, laid-back but wise father and lots of other types of familiar relationships
    - the typical for any TMNT goofiness and chaos are of a new bonkers level here, and it`s all really funny
    - the p a i n TM episodes/finals/ Movie hit hard
This iteration has all the aspects of TMNT in the best and most creative ways it`s possible. Is this radically different from other series? Yes, but not really, all the ingridiens are there, they are just very spiced up with creativity and love for the show.
Everyone who bounced off this series really should try to give it another go, the Movie will probably be the best point to start again, since it`s the closest to other series in it`s story tone.

I recently watched through the whole series for the first time last month in prep for the movie. Honestly... I kinda agree with the camp of 'Trying to be too different'. Not to the extreme reactions you showed, but ...yeah... this show tries to be too different right out the gate, and this imo is a large part of why it didn't do to well.
Now for the record: I do not hate or even dislike this series. ...once it managed to win me over... which it didn't do till about half way through season one, once it remembered "oh yeah, we need a plot." Once you get to the shoe store episode, this series takes a MUCH needed improvement over all. Splinter actually becomes a character, there is a driving narrative to the plot, there is a shit ton of lore... Like Once this series actually gets going... it gets going hard. But those first 13 episodes? They are ROUGH. Not bad, but this series needed to start with the viewer at least knowing of Foot Clan trying to revive Demon Shredder, rather then the Baron Draxum stuff. That would have been fine as the second episode; but getting the ball rolling on with the audience knowing their are wheels moving in the background? I think that would have greatly helped the ease the older fans into things.
Overall, I do enjoy the series and respect what it tried to do; wanting to be something different after the 2012 series nailed the classic stuff, and the 2003 gave us a more dark and mature series. TMNT NEEDED this series. Its sorta akin to 'The Batman' cartoon, not recent movie. BTAS had just redefined Batman, and gave us a series that will probably never be topped. So 'The Batman' didn't try, they decided to be different and do their own thing. Fans hated it. But its a really good series, that does some interesting stuff with the lore and characters. They needed a way to stand out, and they did, but it wasn't till much later that the series started to get the respect it deserves; but allowed for future stuff like Brave and the Bold (which is tonally an even bigger departure from BTAS, but was beloved from the start) to not have to be in the shadow of a good series. Rise, I feel is doing more or less the same thing; it's trying somethign different, doing its own take on the lore and characters, and potentially allowing for future shows to not feel like they have to be in the shadow of two really damn and beloved good takes on the Mythos.

    • @phlpcockrell

The show established a plot from episode 1. What are these weapons? who is Baron Draxum and what is his relationship to the turtles? What is the hidden city? Why does Splinter have a key to access it? What's going to happen with these ooze mosquitoes (later "oozequitoes") that were unleashed on the city? Why did mayhem have ooze? Why did the bounty hunters call mayhem "the agent"? All plot threads to be addressed.
Then it goes on to at least answer the oozequitoes question by having them bite random people, building the world and establishing our Rogues gallery for the season (including the foot clan. Why do they need all this paper and an army of ninja?) and giving us time to actually get to know the turtles. Since they actually have personalities not just 1 character trait to define them.
Then episode 7 is "bug busters" the first half hour episode acknowledging the plot again (after admittedly some fluff but even 2012 had that fluff or "filler" if you must) episode 8 starts the dark armor storyline, I could go on but u get the point.
If you can get past the goofiness and bad faith meme criticisms and actually pay attention to the show you'll (not "you" specifically, anyone watching) see it was just doing what A LOT of shows in the 2010s were doing. Starting as a largely episodic show kids can watch at any point without feeling lost while rewarding fans who watch every episode with rich a story, world and Characters like Steven Universe, star vs, Gravity falls, adventure time etc..
The show shot itself in the foot by not halting the episode and directly telling the audience "THIS IS IMPORTANT! REMEMBER THIS!" so a lot of watchers didn't know what was important and just decided nothing was.

@@phlpcockrell They never really address anything about the weapons. Draxum is largely sir not appearing in this series for a good chunk of season one. If you didn't know the oozequitoes we're gonna be the mutant macguffin then you've never watched a TV show before. They barely ever explain what the Hidden city is. Mayhem pretty much stops existing after the pilot and one other episode. Splinter at this point is such an awful character most people don't care why he'd have a key. Much of the first half of season one is just motw stuff that doesn't relate to any sort of plot so those questions are left hanging forever. It world builds, but any lingering questions mostly feel like the writing staff forgot about them themselves until the second half of the season when suddenly everything is getting answered like every other episode.

@@CassidyShadewing I'm saying it raises the questions. Not that it answers them all. (Unfortunately) draxum isn't around that often because why would they fight the big bad every single episode? It diminishes his threat. Explaining what the hidden city is is like explaining what new york city is. You just spend time there, see what it's like. You shouldn't need everything spoonfed to you if you're older than 5. Mayhem does get written out of season 2 since it was cut in half, but he's there frequently throughout the first. If you wrote splinter off before the halfway point of season 1 where he actually becomes a character then you really shouldn't be replying to this. You have a problem with the show addressing plot elements more after like 15 episodes?
Rise did what A LOT of cartoons in the 2010s did. (Because of corporate mandates) it starts out as primarily episodic with story elements sprinkled in so kids can jump in at any point without feeling too lost, until a little later down the line where it starts addressing the plot more heavily. Same as Steven Universe, Adventure time, Gravity Falls, Star vs., Ducktales 2017 and many others.

@@phlpcockrell Compare Draxum to Shredder in either the 2003 or 2012 series; We don't see them in every episode, but they are around alot more, there presence is still felt, they don't just show up once at the start then f off for most the rest of the series. Draxum I feel is limited by his voice actor, which might be why in season 2 where Draxum has a lot more presence, he's voiced by someone else.
Mayhem is written outta season 1. He has two episodes. TWO, and in both of them he's a macguffin. and maybe a few cameos. Seriously, nothing would change if he he didn't exist at all.
Splinter is not a character until the Shoe Store episode. Again, compare him with the last two series. Both of which have plot points that get brought up much later in the season. But those Splinters are still actual characters. Rise Splinter, is mostly a back ground gag character expect for the episode where he steals the Turtle Tank, and Ms Muffins where we get a real glimpse of his being a character. Besides that he mostly sits on his ass, and maybe has a random smart ass comment.
And for the record: I didn't care for Steven Universe or Adventure Time till they started being more then random kiddie cartoon. Gravity Falls and Ducktales both did the whole concept better, espically since Ducktales actually kept the majority of the characters feeling familar while still doing something different. They make the triplets into actual seperate characters, instead of one character in three bodies. They make Webby not a sterotypical girl. But then characters like Scrooge, Launchpad, and Donald, are still the characters we know. Scrooge isn't some lazy skinflint who ignores his family for money, or something. Yes, he's a bit estranged in the pilot, but is quickly reminded of who he is by the end of the pilot. The story of what happened between him and Donald gets addressed near immediately, and the mystery of what happened to Della is a CONSTANT thread through season one, not just dropped till the back half of the season.

Im kinda glad they did somthing different, or at least tried to. If you watch a show over and over again with only minor changes it doesn't really become its own identity. But rise did! Yes, some parts where very kidish and others actually had some serious topics. But at the end of the day its a cartoon that all ages can enjoy!! In my opinion this version of the tmnt truly felt like they where a family. Raph was the leader only because he was older. Theres a deleted scene in the movie where he says he never wanted to be the leader but thought it was his responsibility to look out for his brothers. Since none of them where ready to step up. They each have unique characteristics that are fun and can be built upon! I also love the fact that there all a different species of turtles! With donnie protecting his soft shell with his tech and mickey curling up into a ball whenever hes scared. Moments like these really adds character! Overall Rise of the Tmnt could've been somthing great, it had a rough start but its a shame we will never know what its full potential would be. Rise of the TMNT is one of the most goofiest and best version of the tmnt so far, with each turtle being just as as equally autistic as the last, but Each based
on a different species and not conventionally heros from the beginning. She proves herself to be capable of fighting with the boys on numerous occasions.

@@gangofheroes I have to agree with Phil. It's true that animation quality should be top notch nowa days, but if you look at the current landscape of American animation nearly no one utilizes the tools at their disposal. The animation in Japan is leaps and bounds ahead of American animation because they aren't afraid to use some serious budget and specific animation styles to give you some of the most jaw dropping 2d and 3d animation to date. Rise shows that someone somewhere wanted to take that same approach with the turtles and it fucking shows. Sure it's not bonkers all the time but the animation is always fluid, they have tracking shots instead of a multitude of quick cuts, and it all culminates in a show that makes it self different from any TMNT show and any cartoon show on Nickelodeon for the better.

Saw trailers for the RotTMNT Netflix movie and thought it looked pretty cool so I decided to give the series a fair shake. Man I’ve never 180’d on anything so hard in my life. The more visible it can get the better! Going to be honest, I wasn't a big turtles fan growing up so I didn't watch much.
I watched the Nostalgia Critic's review and went "Ah... probably going to miss this one." Plus, 2018 was a bad year for me and I was deep in grief that I just lost interest in a lot of stuff.
So, fastforward to 2021 Mid-Pandemic. One of my favourite reviewers merges her channel with her wife's and ports a bunch of reviews over. I click on the Rise one and I was intrigued. Even with some misguided attitudes towards familial abuse that was a thing in the 2010's, the review was very positive.
So, when I was on holiday, I decided to look it up, got to episode 3 and was hooked.
A lot was different but for the better. We don't see a Leo and Raph rivalry literally when we meet them? The turtles call Splinter Dad more than anything else? We get straight up nuts action and fun villains? Wonderful.
Honestly, post pandemic, Splinter is a character I get.
Also, despite the issues people had with her, I swear this version of April is tied number one with 2003.
Give this series a chance, Nickelodeon and Netflix!

Its nice to see Donatello get a more outspoken personality, I like that Mickey isn't force to be the comic relief and for once the show doesn't due to the Raph vs Leo bs that plagues other adaptations. April is so much fun and what they do with Casey is unique (both of them).

This movie is soooooooo worth every second. I'm an 87 baby, so I grew up on early fox Saturday mornings. '97 X-Men, Eek the Cat and crime fighting sharks in rollerblades. Saying this means that I grew up with Elias Koteas being the one and only(aside from comic versions) Casey Jones, the Ninja Turtles actually moving like humans with (listen to this kids...) ABSOLUTELY ZER0 CGI!!!!!!! And it was amazing. Brought the type of realism that any kid/teen would want out of their favs. With this though brought a limit to what could be achieved as far as practical film and story telling. Fast forward to present day and my 3 yr old, by some means of fantastic nature, has also fallen in love with TMNT and as time would have it she's in love with today's rendition. She has been hooked on this movie in particular for a couple weeks now and I ignorantly wanted nothing to do with it bc I saw Mikey as a sorcerer. Raph was a giant hologram of himself, Donnie was like ultimate Tony Stark and Banner's illegitimate love turtle child and Leo just being so good at leading he can teleport. Pppppppffffftttt. Pleeeeeease. Then one day I just happened to watch the first five minutes...and holy shit...I teared up. Not even lying. FIRST FIVE MINUTES. The shit had me. It was a perfect "Tarantino" move. They started at the bitter end and then fkn played it back from the start(sort of) and I ended up finishing the entire movie. I was so enthralled that about half way I realized my daughter had left the room and I was balls deep in this tale with 100% faith in my boys being able to finish their mission. If you are a fan of TMNT by any stretch of the imagination, I would highly recommend you set aside a couple hours of your life and just enjoy this impeccable extension of our childhood heroes. A++++ You won't regret it. (Now do keep in mind that this version(rise of the...) They have been such an affective team and have become masters in their individual crafts that they have unlocked ancient blessings or powers. Seems fair fetched and waaay off base for a Ninja Turtle, but once you see the parallels to the character and their power, as well as, their personalities and personal experiences throughout their entirety, you can immediately see the coronations between each member and their abilities. Great story. Strong animation. Writing so perfect it would make Shakespeare cry(well...maybe not, but still) and all those bittersweet moments that will turn the strongest of men into blubbering babies. It has it all.

Or even if the guy who did 'Brightburn' put their minds on it. I think this is a diamond in the rough that needs to be executed like the 90's, but with a bit of 21st century flair. Full cgi is obviously too much. Those movies were...movies...very passive/aggressive movies. We can do better. 🙃
