Betta breeding is an involved process. In this video, I document our betta breeding project, starting from the spawn until our Bettas are mature. If you are planning on doing some betta breeding, watch our fish grow from a day or so old until they are colorful and beautiful at 14 weeks old! Betta breeding is not something to be taken lightly, it takes a lot of effort.

This is so cool. I'd like to get into this hobby when I get older.
I hope you do!
I love seeing all the types and colors that can come from a single breeding. Gorgeous.
Melissa Miew Thank you, that fascinated me as well. 😊👍
That 3rd male is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!
Thanks! Only two in the spawn were cellophanes...one male and one female.
Beautiful. Are you currently doing another breeding? If so, what pattern/color/tail type are they?
sapphire lilly We haven't done another spawn, but someday...
Baby bettas are the cutest things.
+Formal Cat : ) They certainly are!
Ahhhh, they are all so BEAUTIFUL. Gongrats on all the babies. This is a lovely vid to watch, thank you for the share.
Nicola Mckeen Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
keep making these kinda videos with different colors n breeds this video was very nice to watch
Sultan Syed Thank you! I am not currently breeding bettas, but if/When is do it again, I will definitely make more videos of them. 😊👍
I have 8 day old fry, super excited to see their colors.. Both parents were white but the mom had a metallic shine
Well thank you for the help. I think what I have been doing is the right thing. I have been cleaning out the tanks as much as I can...
+Lisa Colebank That's good, I hope all goes well!
Is it weird to find fish just so stinking cute? 🤷♀️😍😊
Katherine Neugebauer I think they are...especially baby fish!! 😊👍
@DDEVIL REXZAR I should have made a video about water changes. THis is not my original idea, lots of betta keepers do this: Get some 1/8" rigid airline tubing and some flexible airline tubing, and stick them together. Siphon wastes off of the bottom of the tank with this, it has a slow flow rate, which is safer for the small fry. You will still need to be careful not to suck up any fry. Once the fry are a couple of weeks old, you can start adding small amounts of dechlorinated water to the tank, and soon after that, you can begin to chnge 1-2 gallons per day.
Aquarimax what Bettas children eat?
walterworms and baby brine shrimp is what we used. : )
+Aquarimax can I use egg yolk?
When did you start feeding them?
the care of these fish must have been immaculate, very good looking males
Mike Lowery Thank you! We appreciate that. It did take a lot of work. :)
Those are absolutely gorgeous bettas!
+Ãûgîmãł Thank you!
They are lively and beautiful!!!
Laborer in the field Thank you! 😊👍
Hi there, I have two questions witch are how many bettas did you end up with and where did you get the little tanks at to separate the males at?
Thanks for the kind words!
When we jarred these bettas, we essentially changed the water every day. There is a lot of debate on the min. size of tank for a betta. IMO, 4-5 liters, about 1.25 US gallons, is minimum...not ideal, but possible. We have a front office betta in 1.25 gallons. The tank is at 80 F. He's been in there 2 years, and is doing well. I recommend a larger tank when possible. The male I keep in my own office has a heavily planted 5 gallon tank, and he seems to enjoy it.
Wow that white one in the ends was the one with the red stripe! Beautiful babies. Love it?
Lcurley0719 CP Thanks. Several of them turned out pretty well.
I don't have bettas, I'm not interested in getting any, but that was still a great video and 4 minutes well spent.
Thank you.
"So much relish. So much...GUSTO~"
Why comment?
Man I love fish
My babies just hatched, and are vertical swimming :) Can't wait for them to grow into beautiful bettas.
Elizabeth Korina Congratulations! Best of luck with your baby bettas!
I have some betta fry that are about 4 weeks old. Just noticed the other day that one of the larger ones are just starting to show some color. The mom and dad are both crowntails but it's my first attempt at breeding. I have picked up more last weekend so will be setting up another breeding tank soon.
Good luck with your spawn!
Hey. The betta frys just hatched and are all vertical swimming now. Once they become horizontal swimmer I gotta remove the male betta. After which should I off the tank light at night? Or continue to leave it on. If so when can I off it? Another thing is should I do water changes during the first 2 weeks?
Kevin Cheong If I remember correctly, we started turning off the light at night once the male was out of the tank (when the fry were free-swimming.) I didn't change water during the first two weeks, I did add a little fresh dechlorinated water every day though, starting shortly after the fry were swimming.
Loveeee this video!!! I had done breeding my male and female bettas and only 3 Fries survived so far.....they are big now and but they took almost 7 months to grow to this size.. did u do something else so they grow fast?
Also now my female mom has grown so huge that whenever i put them together again...she thrashes the male..any suggestion how i can breed them again?
Glad you like it! The fish seem to grow best with lots of food, very frequent water changes, and plenty of space. If the female is too big for the male, it is best to find them mates that are closer in size. :)
I just bought a baby betta its a little over a month old still no colouration, its so cute
weo1weo1weo1 It is so fun to watch them grow up! I hope it enjoys a long life with you!
Yes I have tested it. I happened to have 33 little fry for now...
Lisa Colebank is there any readable ammonia or nitrite? This may help: ince my fry reached 2 weeks old, I changed about 20% of the water every day.
Thank you so much...
I have my betta fish named "Winter" he is a male and I'm saving my money for a female betta 😊
It's hard to have just one!
Cute babies! Neat seeing them grow up
boscoitalics Glad you liked them. It was a lot of fun watching them mature...they grow and change so quickly!
Omg great video ! The males are gorgeous ! Their fins grow so fast wow. I love the females as well :)
Glad to hear that you liked them!
I plan to breed bettas and I got everything you need for it but the female seems a bit small what should I do plz help.(I love this video
I'm glad you like the video. :)
It is common for pet stores to sell females that are quite young, and smaller than the males. If you condition her well with top-quality foods, she should mature and grow fairly fast. Try to pair fish that are not too different in size for best results.
Great comb tails!
So cool to see what colors they have when they grow up
SpunkyRO ! Thank you, that was one of my favorite parts too!
That's ok I got a heater... and a half moon betta can't wait to see what the fry will turn out like...
Lisa Colebank that is definitely a big part of the fun!
Do I need to remove the father when they are 2 day old?
As soon as they are free swimming you remove the father
The Inflatable Sea Lion hey when should i remove the father .tell me the date after hatching
Achu B S Nair when they start swimming
More like 4 days not 2 for sure
Antonia Quinn I removed father on 3rd day
THERE SO CUTE😍😍😍😍😍😍
Tania Hussain 😀👍 I am glad you like them
There's nothing quite like a tiny baby fish. 😁
Tania Hussain it is they're
You too :)
Thanks! I am working on another video right now, actually. We'll see when I manage to post it. :)
Your male beta is absolutely gorgeous!
What did you do with them? I want to do this but then I ether have to separate them or sell them...
Endlar Filmations we sold most of them and kept a few...it is definitely something to think about, you could end up with hundreds of bettas.😳
Did you sell any to larger chains like Petco, Pet Supplies Plus, or Petmart? I know a few better fish stores but many are a bit further away
Endlar Filmations No, the big box pet stores generally will not take them. We sold most to LFS, a few to individuals online and locally.
What did they normally sell for?
Endlar Filmations The pet stores gave us 1/2 the retail price of the fish in store credit, if I remember correctly
They between 2 to 3 weeks old feeding on raw beef how to prepare it meals
Jared Sanchez Are You referring to beef heart? That is a food I have never prepared for my fish...
You never feed bettas meat...
Thanks for the video. My 8 year old son and I really enjoyed watching it! It was really fun.
Glad to hear it!
I used infusoria +vinegar eels for 2-3 days, then walterworms and baby brine shrimp.
A very interesting little project😃👍😃👍
Dinosaurs terroir World Thanks! It was very educational, fun, but a lot of work!
Aquarimax are you still breeding them?
+Dinosaurs terroir World Not currently. I probably will someday!
Aquarimax planning a livestream day?
Dinosaurs terroir World A busy evening tonight...my daughter has a choir concert, so I may not manage a livestream...I may be able to squeeze it in before the concert if I am lucky. 😆
really only 14 weeks?!
RAWBEEF MEAT They grow fast, don't they! 😀 they can even grow and mature faster if fed more often (I typically fed them twice per day)
What happen to them now?
What will u feed them
Aquarimax at two weeks old why could or should b feed
RAWBEEF Meat at two weeks old
How do you clean the tank??
+Dara Martinez We used two rigid pieces of airline tubing with a piece of flexible silicone tibing in the middle to siphon the bottom every day. ~10%-20% water change.
Aquarimax oh thanks😄 that really helped!
i think your over feeding them
I was worried about that initially, but many other betta breeders apparently feed them more than I did. :)
Thx Aquarimax, i will try to do it in a 4.5 liter in my office , puting in also a small driftwood, a snail and changing about 1/3 of the water every week! if not sucessfull i have a 18 liter planted tank at home and i will put it there hoping he will thrive better :D
beautiful bettas! well done
Stuart Cox Thank you!
They look so beautiful when they grow up
Yoggiecast Thanks! There were some pretty nice ones in this spawn. : )
Also I really enjoyed your video, you're betta fish are beautiful I enjoy looking at them.
I'm glad you like them. As I recall, I have seen some of elitebetta's videos...some incredible fish!
I don't want to clean the water to much for them, because they can easy die from doing that. Somer are big looking and other are real tiny. but at the bottom of the tank it has a fuzzy look from when I fed them so I think it's best to clean it at that time...
Lisa Colebank Finding a balance can be tricky. Water with a lot of waste built up in it can become acidic, which makes the ammonia less toxic, so doing a water change can suddenly change the pH and increase the toxicity of ammonia, which can kill all your fry very quickly. That's why I changed 2 gallons every day: consistency was key to maintaining good water quality. I used a rigid airline to scrape the bottom glass to prevent buildup. It seemed to work well.
Im breeding betta for side projects, and as recommended from the breeder, I've got quality male and female to pair. It take them three time to try to spawn and I kinda hate how the male literally trashed the female each time. (the female one is my favorite one), but on one unlucky day, the female jump off from the quarantine tank and died. but luckily all the eggs survived and now i have 200-300 betta babies in my breeding tank. i hope one of them take on mom's coloration. Right now I'm feeding them infusoria and egg yolk.
waheda samsuri I a, Sorry to hear about the mother, but at least the fry are doing well! 👍
Glad you liked it!
Such perfect little Bettas :)
I'm glad you like them!
Awesome. Can't wait to start breeding. Very good video. Thank you!
Wow. Beautiful bettas!!!!
Kelly Ehrich thank you! 😊👍
Aquarimax I am actually thinking about breeding bettas myself! I'm learning all there is to know before I begin. ;)
Kelly Ehrich Excellent! Lots of research before undertaking such a project is to be commended. 😊👍
Very nice video! I like the fact u have answered alot of questions fom people, that is very kind! I've had alot of fish over the yrs. Bettas are cool fish. I like that they live yrs. if taken care of. I might give this a try this time. We did get a male & female a few days ago. If u have time or I may find the answer after look up on videos here but I was trying to find out if it was the male or female that can go in a tank with mollies. Can't remember.
3greatgreyhounds3 Thanks! I would imagine females might do better with mollies, as a male might mistake some mollies for bettas and try to fight with them.
Thanks, yea I couldn't remember but now I think I've decided to leave the bettas in their own tanks cause my female now seems to be happier by herself. I guess LOL. My female betta is my newest fish.
I love those beta fry
anytime fish thank you! 😊👍
Very nice video! I have probably watched this over 4 times lol :)
Bella And Bettas glad to hear you enjoyed it that much! 👍 This video surprised me with its popularity. 😀
Yeah I bet! I really like it:)
Woah all your fighting fish is so pretty!!!
I really wanted to see the mum and pops to all those little babies !?
Phoebe Jones They appear in the first section of the video...were you able to see them?
There are such beautiful fish! 😍
Glad you like them!
At that stage wht u recommend wht to feed an how to prepare
Jared Sanchez I would still give newly hatched brine shrimp, as well as a high-quality ground pellet or flake if they will take it.
So fun. I can’t wait to try this.
Deann Frey very fun! Also a lot of work! 😊👍
Isn’t everything that’s a great hobby.
Deann Frey True! 😊👍
awesome video,loved it
John Smith Thanks for watching!
Awesome video
Beautiful! I can't wait till my girls give birth☺
me too
What a beautiful boy fish!
Best of luck with your spawn...will look forward to seeing a video documenting it!
You did a great job
a few questions:
1: how much fry fish a layed?
2: can they still be together once their older?
3: what happends when you over feed them
4: I'm kinda having trouble Breeding my fish...
We got fifty fry, which is a pretty small spawn. 300 or more is possible.
Fry that grow up together are less likely to fight, but the risk is always there.
Overfeeding can quickly pollute the water and cause various problems, and even kill some or all of the fish.
They grow fast!
Ooo ok thanks!!
Thank you
Geethu Kitchen you’re welcome!
Yes dragon scale and non dragon scale can breed although u would get more dragons if the female were dragon
Great video.. I love the blue one.. he is stunning.
SassyMustang1980 Thank you...,he was rather nice, wasn't he?
yes.. totally.. love the bluer ones over the red..LOL
Yes they are started tonight, but when should I feed them food I tried a bit of food tonight. Oh and is it ok to shut the light of for them tonight as well???
Lisa Colebank sorry I missed this. If they are swimming freely you can feed them. Turning off the light is fine.
I love d ideas of breeding an there colours
Jared Sanchez Thank you! 👍
this video was awesome
+Erica D'Angelo Blanchette Thank you for watching!
pls make more videos! its great and educational
my right ear really loved this
Stelli Sorry that it was no fun for the other ear...this was back in the days before I had a stereo microphone...😔
Very nice happy and healthy looking betas
bettas
Glad you enjoyed them!
My husband was wondering when it is best to feed the 7 week old betta fry blood worms that are frozen, but cut up small for them? I have been feeding then brine shrimp and fry starter. at the start I didn't have micorworms....
Lisa Colebank at 7 weeks I was still feeding brine shrimp and walterworms I believe, but I started feeding ground pellets too. Chopped bloodworms are good too, if small enough.
I used a Canon Powershot SX130IS, (I think it cost us about $160 USD a couple of years ago.) Most of the video clips were shot on the macro setting. In many cases, I held the lens right up against the glass for stability, but at a slight angle (downward or upward)
So cute ❤
I wanted to try something new with my female betta, but hoping it would take to the tropical flasks. I was thinking about putting her in with some Molly's, swordtails, guppies, but was wondering if she would attack the little babies in there as well???
Lisa Colebank It's possible to put her with your livebearers. She will probably adapt to the flakes, but it is quite likely that she will go after the fry.
3:33 soooo pretty
+Summer Wagster Glad you liked that one. The only cellophane betta in the spawn!
i love your fish they are so beautiful
John Biggles Thanks! : )
I have a pure black male with a few silver scales on his side. And a white/light pink female with red/dark pink fins.
Kaeden Myers they sound like some stunning bettas!
@@Aquarimax they are! I got them for like $5 each at petsmart.
Kaeden Myers Sometimes you can find some stunners in the big box stores, I have once or twice...
that’s how my male Betta fish looks
Khlxe _ one of my favorite betta color varieties 👍
I just Bred some guppies and now I'm going to try out breeding Bettas! Hopefully I can get some babies.. how difficult are they to keep
Very interesting
Gorgeous. Mine doesn’t look that book wow..
Thank you 😊👍
love it!
Thanks!
Hey, hoping you still check this or someone who knows about Betta does. Are their bellies suppose to be extended? The 12 weeks all look bloated and the blue at 14 weeks does, too. I don't know if they are suppose to just eat as much as they want when they are growing. I'm just wondering because I am trying to breed my fish, I keep placing my female in one of the males tank in a plastic bag because I'm still trying to warm them up to one another. They always seem to act aggressively towards each other, but the male did make a bubble nest. However, I'm terrified to put her in there with him because of him flaring and what not. I got all of my fish from local stores. I did read about how no one would likely want to purchase because they won't know what kind they are or their genetic background, but I can't stand seeing them in those little tiny containers with an inch of water in there. There's been fish I've thought about getting and then went back to the store a week later, and they were floating upside down in the containers and it makes me feel awful. Tonight, there was a beautiful red and black crown tail at walmart with like a half of inch of water in his container. I noticed the betta water sitting there... tested both of their waters to make sure the temperature was similar and poured the rest of it in there with him... He instantly seemed so much happier. That's what I'm talking about, though. I bought one in a similar situation like 2 weeks ago, and his bottom fins (I don't know the technical names for all the fish parts.) but the ones that are long and thin on a crown tail right under the face, are both curled up and damaged, probably due to sitting in low water for so long, I don't know. But I bought him... I debated about it for a long time at the store, because he looked unhealthy. But I brought him home, and put him in a little tank with no filter. (I still need to get him a better tank, but I bought 3 2.5 ounce tanks for my other fish the same night I got him, so he had to go into one of the hand me downs momentarily.) and not even 24 hours later, he made a bubble nest. None of my others have made a bubble nest.I'm pretty sure I read they will do this when they are happy/content and of course, when they are ready to mate. I wish I knew how old all of my fish are. Like 4 months, 2 years lol. Who knows.
I was watching your video mostly because I bought yet another Betta tonight. He is not as big as my others and his fins are not long and flowy. I was wondering if he is possibly younger than my others or if this is just his permanent look. Do Betta grow to their environment because I swear every single one of mine have gotten bigger since I got them. I have 7 Betta... 6 males and 1 female, lol. The males are just so much prettier! But I love my little lady, too. She is pink/purple, and when I did put her in the bag with little gray/ mr. bubble nest (He hasn't a name, yet. I got him for my husband, as well as a tank for his other fish for his birthday. For the record, he is like a shimmery gray. In the light, his fins almost look like they have a pinkish shine and they change colors depending on which way the light hits him, I swear.) Anyways, when I put her next to him, she got verticle almost tiger looking stripes down her sides. I read that was a good sign, but I swear they were not acting friendly towards one another, even she was acting like she wanted to attack him. Following each other around, him flaring up, gills out... Figured I would try again later. But I really don't want him to mess her up (or vice versa, but he is quite larger than her.) My hubby said we should try with a fish we aren't attached to, but I don't want no fish getting hurt! lol I know the tank size they need to be in to mate, that the water needs to be like a quarter of the tank size in a larger, rectangular tank. So he couldn't have used his bubble nest anyways, he is in a small little rectangular tank, probably a foot long and 3-4 inches wide and 5-6 inches tall, with no filter. Not the right environment for fry or tons of little fishies. I'm sure they couldn't survive because they would run out of oxygen(?). Anyways, if you or someone could answer all my questions, I would appreciate it. I also need to know where to get or how to make the food for the fry once they hatch. I have not tried her with any of the other fish, I don't want to confuse her and like I said, none of the others hae made a nest. Me putting her in there in a bag destroyed some of his bubbles and he remade it that night, but his nest was no where near as large as the one in your video anyhow.I don't know, I need to know how to get all the live food and "make" it, how old my fish are, how to get the marylax or whatever it is called incase either of them do substain damage. Right now I am just preparing, but I can't wait to see one of my fish father the babies. It is truly amazing. I think I am addicted to Bettas, if that is a thing. I have one bluish/green and red who looks exactly like a red carnation, so I named him Nation. Ok, really long message, sorry.
Amanda Holmes while the babies are still actively growing, their bellies should be quite full. After that, not so much. I applaud your enthusiasm for bettas! I wouldn’t recommend breeding until you have at least a 10 gallon tank for spawning, a 20+ gallon for grow out of the females, and 100 or so jars for the males...as well as a known place you can home them. It is rewarding , but a LOT of work. You can see how to raise the food in my video but n microworms. 👍
I hope u do more videos I love ur fish
I have breded my betta.I got many fries. They started swiming. But they were staying on the upside only. They are not going down. What can i do.
The Betta it is normal for them to swim at the surface for a few days. They will start to swim lower as they grow. The important thing is to make sure they get food where they swim. Infusoria, vinegar eels, and baby brine shrimp are good choices at this time.
5 star vid!
So cute
bomberbang Thanks!
How do u do a water change with the betta fry and how often do u need to change the water
L3MONZ3BRA 554 I used rigid airline tubing and a piece of flexible tubing. I used the rigid part to suck the water out of the aquarium, and to scrape the aquarium floor clean. The flexible tubing curved over the lip of the aquarium and down towards the drain bucket.i did 20% changes daily.
Very cool.
Thanks!
