    Betta breeding is an involved process. In this video, I document our betta breeding project, starting from the spawn until our Bettas are mature. If you are planning on doing some betta breeding, watch our fish grow from a day or so old until they are colorful and beautiful at 14 weeks old! Betta breeding is not something to be taken lightly, it takes a lot of effort.

    @DDEVIL REXZAR I should have made a video about water changes. THis is not my original idea, lots of betta keepers do this: Get some 1/8" rigid airline tubing and some flexible airline tubing, and stick them together. Siphon wastes off of the bottom of the tank with this, it has a slow flow rate, which is safer for the small fry. You will still need to be careful not to suck up any fry. Once the fry are a couple of weeks old, you can start adding small amounts of dechlorinated water to the tank, and soon after that, you can begin to chnge 1-2 gallons per day.

    Hi there, I have two questions witch are how many bettas did you end up with and where did you get the little tanks at to separate the males at?

  • @Aquarimax
    @Aquarimax  11 років тому +1

    Thanks for the kind words!
    When we jarred these bettas, we essentially changed the water every day. There is a lot of debate on the min. size of tank for a betta. IMO, 4-5 liters, about 1.25 US gallons, is minimum...not ideal, but possible. We have a front office betta in 1.25 gallons. The tank is at 80 F. He's been in there 2 years, and is doing well. I recommend a larger tank when possible. The male I keep in my own office has a heavily planted 5 gallon tank, and he seems to enjoy it.

    I have some betta fry that are about 4 weeks old. Just noticed the other day that one of the larger ones are just starting to show some color. • @Kevlaughs89
    @Kevlaughs89 10 років тому +4

    Hey. The betta frys just hatched and are all vertical swimming now. Once they become horizontal swimmer I gotta remove the male betta. After which should I off the tank light at night? Or continue to leave it on. If so when can I off it? Another thing is should I do water changes during the first 2 weeks?

    • @Aquarimax
      @Aquarimax  10 років тому +4

      Kevin Cheong If I remember correctly, we started turning off the light at night once the male was out of the tank (when the fry were free-swimming.) I didn't change water during the first two weeks, I did add a little fresh dechlorinated water every day though, starting shortly after the fry were swimming.

    Loveeee this video!!! I had done breeding my male and female bettas and only 3 Fries survived so far.....they are big now and but they took almost 7 months to grow to this size.. did u do something else so they grow fast?
    Also now my female mom has grown so huge that whenever i put them together again...she thrashes the male..any suggestion how i can breed them again?

    • @Aquarimax
      @Aquarimax  10 років тому +1

      Glad you like it! The fish seem to grow best with lots of food, very frequent water changes, and plenty of space. If the female is too big for the male, it is best to find them mates that are closer in size. :)

      It is common for pet stores to sell females that are quite young, and smaller than the males. If you condition her well with top-quality foods, she should mature and grow fairly fast. Try to pair fish that are not too different in size for best results.

    I don't want to clean the water to much for them, because they can easy die from doing that. Somer are big looking and other are real tiny. but at the bottom of the tank it has a fuzzy look from when I fed them so I think it's best to clean it at that time...

    • @Aquarimax
      @Aquarimax  7 років тому

      Lisa Colebank Finding a balance can be tricky. Water with a lot of waste built up in it can become acidic, which makes the ammonia less toxic, so doing a water change can suddenly change the pH and increase the toxicity of ammonia, which can kill all your fry very quickly. That's why I changed 2 gallons every day: consistency was key to maintaining good water quality. I used a rigid airline to scrape the bottom glass to prevent buildup. It seemed to work well.

    Im breeding betta for side projects, and as recommended from the breeder, I've got quality male and female to pair. It take them three time to try to spawn and I kinda hate how the male literally trashed the female each time. (the female one is my favorite one), but on one unlucky day, the female jump off from the quarantine tank and died. but luckily all the eggs survived and now i have 200-300 betta babies in my breeding tank. i hope one of them take on mom's coloration. Right now I'm feeding them infusoria and egg yolk.

I like that they live yrs. if taken care of. I might give this a try this time. We did get a male & female a few days ago. If u have time or I may find the answer after look up on videos here but I was trying to find out if it was the male or female that can go in a tank with mollies. Can't remember.

    a few questions:
    1: how much fry fish a layed?
    2: can they still be together once their older?
    3: what happends when you over feed them
    4: I'm kinda having trouble Breeding my fish...

    • @Aquarimax
      @Aquarimax  8 років тому

      We got fifty fry, which is a pretty small spawn. 300 or more is possible.
      Fry that grow up together are less likely to fight, but the risk is always there.
      Overfeeding can quickly pollute the water and cause various problems, and even kill some or all of the fish.

    I used a Canon Powershot SX130IS, (I think it cost us about $160 USD a couple of years ago.) Most of the video clips were shot on the macro setting. In many cases, I held the lens right up against the glass for stability, but at a slight angle (downward or upward)

    • @Aquarimax
      @Aquarimax  7 років тому

      Lisa Colebank It's possible to put her with your livebearers. She will probably adapt to the flakes, but it is quite likely that she will go after the fry.

    Hey, hoping you still check this or someone who knows about Betta does. Are their bellies suppose to be extended? The 12 weeks all look bloated and the blue at 14 weeks does, too. I don't know if they are suppose to just eat as much as they want when they are growing. I'm just wondering because I am trying to breed my fish, I keep placing my female in one of the males tank in a plastic bag because I'm still trying to warm them up to one another. They always seem to act aggressively towards each other, but the male did make a bubble nest. However, I'm terrified to put her in there with him because of him flaring and what not. I got all of my fish from local stores. I did read about how no one would likely want to purchase because they won't know what kind they are or their genetic background, but I can't stand seeing them in those little tiny containers with an inch of water in there. There's been fish I've thought about getting and then went back to the store a week later, and they were floating upside down in the containers and it makes me feel awful. Tonight, there was a beautiful red and black crown tail at walmart with like a half of inch of water in his container. I noticed the betta water sitting there... tested both of their waters to make sure the temperature was similar and poured the rest of it in there with him... He instantly seemed so much happier. That's what I'm talking about, though. I bought one in a similar situation like 2 weeks ago, and his bottom fins (I don't know the technical names for all the fish parts.) but the ones that are long and thin on a crown tail right under the face, are both curled up and damaged, probably due to sitting in low water for so long, I don't know. But I bought him... I debated about it for a long time at the store, because he looked unhealthy. But I brought him home, and put him in a little tank with no filter. (I still need to get him a better tank, but I bought 3 2.5 ounce tanks for my other fish the same night I got him, so he had to go into one of the hand me downs momentarily.) and not even 24 hours later, he made a bubble nest. None of my others have made a bubble nest.I'm pretty sure I read they will do this when they are happy/content and of course, when they are ready to mate. I wish I knew how old all of my fish are. Like 4 months, 2 years lol. Who knows.
    I was watching your video mostly because I bought yet another Betta tonight. He is not as big as my others and his fins are not long and flowy. I was wondering if he is possibly younger than my others or if this is just his permanent look. Do Betta grow to their environment because I swear every single one of mine have gotten bigger since I got them. I have 7 Betta... 6 males and 1 female, lol. The males are just so much prettier! But I love my little lady, too. She is pink/purple, and when I did put her in the bag with little gray/ mr. bubble nest (He hasn't a name, yet. I got him for my husband, as well as a tank for his other fish for his birthday. For the record, he is like a shimmery gray. In the light, his fins almost look like they have a pinkish shine and they change colors depending on which way the light hits him, I swear.) Anyways, when I put her next to him, she got verticle almost tiger looking stripes down her sides. I read that was a good sign, but I swear they were not acting friendly towards one another, even she was acting like she wanted to attack him. Following each other around, him flaring up, gills out... Figured I would try again later. But I really don't want him to mess her up (or vice versa, but he is quite larger than her.) My hubby said we should try with a fish we aren't attached to, but I don't want no fish getting hurt! lol I know the tank size they need to be in to mate, that the water needs to be like a quarter of the tank size in a larger, rectangular tank. So he couldn't have used his bubble nest anyways, he is in a small little rectangular tank, probably a foot long and 3-4 inches wide and 5-6 inches tall, with no filter. Not the right environment for fry or tons of little fishies. I'm sure they couldn't survive because they would run out of oxygen(?). Anyways, if you or someone could answer all my questions, I would appreciate it. I also need to know where to get or how to make the food for the fry once they hatch. I have not tried her with any of the other fish, I don't want to confuse her and like I said, none of the others hae made a nest. Me putting her in there in a bag destroyed some of his bubbles and he remade it that night, but his nest was no where near as large as the one in your video anyhow.I don't know, I need to know how to get all the live food and "make" it, how old my fish are, how to get the marylax or whatever it is called incase either of them do substain damage. Right now I am just preparing, but I can't wait to see one of my fish father the babies. It is truly amazing. I think I am addicted to Bettas, if that is a thing. I have one bluish/green and red who looks exactly like a red carnation, so I named him Nation. Ok, really long message, sorry.

    • @Aquarimax
      @Aquarimax  6 років тому

      Amanda Holmes while the babies are still actively growing, their bellies should be quite full. After that, not so much. I applaud your enthusiasm for bettas! I wouldn’t recommend breeding until you have at least a 10 gallon tank for spawning, a 20+ gallon for grow out of the females, and 100 or so jars for the males...as well as a known place you can home them. It is rewarding , but a LOT of work. You can see how to raise the food in my video but n microworms. 👍

    • @Aquarimax
      @Aquarimax  5 років тому

      The Betta it is normal for them to swim at the surface for a few days. They will start to swim lower as they grow. The important thing is to make sure they get food where they swim. Infusoria, vinegar eels, and baby brine shrimp are good choices at this time.

    • @Aquarimax
      @Aquarimax  5 років тому

      L3MONZ3BRA 554 I used rigid airline tubing and a piece of flexible tubing. I used the rigid part to suck the water out of the aquarium, and to scrape the aquarium floor clean. The flexible tubing curved over the lip of the aquarium and down towards the drain bucket.i did 20% changes daily.
