How to Make Your Own Shaved Ice (Bingsu) with NO MACHINE
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 жов 2024
- Shaved ice is so refreshing and delicious. It is the perfect summer treat. There are different versions in Asia. Taiwanese have their snow ice, Koreans have their bingsu, Japanese have their kakigori, and of course, there are the classic snow cones. My problem is that it is quite expensive for what it is. Here is an easy hack to make your own shaved ice at home.
Recipe
This is what you need. A freezable plastic container - milk expands in the freeze so don’t use glass. Milk and corn syrup.
Why do we need corn syrup in the milk? Well, it helps to stabilize the milk when frozen, it adds a little bit of flavor to it and makes the milk ice fluffier.
The ratio I’m using is 1 - 10. 1 part syrup and 10 parts milk. Mix it together and freeze.
After 5 hours, you can take it out. So that your hands don’t get a frostbite get yourself a zip lock bag and pad it with a towel inside. Now you can hold your milk ice. This is where the magic happens. Take out your grater and start grating your ice.
Look how fluffy it is! The best part is that you can add whatever toppings you like! I usually add mangoes and condensed milk.

I tried this! It was good! I also added some condensed milk to the mixture! My girl really likes durian so I made one with fresh durian, durian ice cream and durian egg rolls. She was really happy so I’m really happy 😊
For another version I also tried putting matcha powder into the mix to make a matcha bingsu with matcha ice cream, matcha pocky sticks and matcha mochi. Straight up banger!
So easy yet so delicious! Thanks!
Thanks for trying! That’s quite a bit of durian haha. Bit all your versions sound amazing.
That matcha recipe sounds amazing!!
tried it today! so happy with the results... wish i can share the pic
Amitha Fernando thanks for trying and glad you enjoyed it. Tag us on Instagram or Facebook if you post it.

I
I tried bingsu today for the first time and I’m in love lol. I tried the one with mangos and strawberries
It’s so easy and ingredients are so simple??? I’m so gonna do this instead of paying for overpriced Bingsu with a lot of sugar! Thanks so much!
this girl saved my life! love it!!!!!!
Quick question: what's a good substitute for corn syrup? Would honey work?
Condensed milk. I do 1.5 cups of milk to 2 tablespoons condensed milk. Never fails.
Oh thanks! I’m so gonna try it next summer!
@@angexu4361 did it work?
Queen!! Omg thank you yesss I’m doing it
Thanks for sharing. I’m going to try this with Oatmilk because I can’t have regular milk due to lactose intolerant. I was hoping to find a way to do it without the machine too.
YOUR SO SO SO SMART THANK YOU
omg I remember you from those videos about asian culture and stuff! and I will definitely make this soonnnnnn
Thanks for stopping by!
This is a great idea, thank you! I'll have to try this once I find my grater lol
You're so smart! Thank you for sharing.
Yay!!! 🥳 Thank you so much for this recipe!! There's no Bingsu where I live so I normally get it when I travel! With COVID, I was having withdrawals!! I tried this today and it was amazing!!! 🥭 🥭 🥭
Good idea thanks you for sharing ❤❤
Wow!! Glad that I watched your video right before getting the ice maker online. You saved me 100 bucks!! Will try out your way!! Thank you
They have milk bags in South Africa - milk is so yum
Brilliant hack!! Thank you for sharing!
On extreme hot summer day, I enter the food court that has air condition working perfectly fine. I order the snow cone 🍧 or kakigori or frio frio or whatever we call it. I enjoy it, and my need is fulfilled and I am satisfied. Then I go outside, which is 100 degrees out there, I get thirsty again. All the stuff that made me happy inside the food court is all gone in just one instant.
LOL Too many times! Have you tried eating it outside? :P Air conditioning, something we take for granted.
Actually, yes. Just order togo and eat while walking.
You deserve million of likes thank you for that hack
Looks really delicious!!I will try it!
Wow thanks
for sharing I love it cuz my ice shaker is broken
شكرا مره على الوصفه وتسهيل الأمر 🤍
would it be possible to substitute honey for the corn syrup? tnks
thank youuu so much will try to make this. Can I ask how many servings can this make?😊and how many ml did you put for the bagged milk?
We used 1L of milk. It makes about 6 servings, but it depends who's eating ;) You can find the recipe here: www.kindofcooking.com/how-to-make-shaved-ice-at-home-with-no-machine/
It looks sooo good! will try it !
Perfect video
Nice hack... we call it Ice Kachang in Singapore / Malaysia.... my favourite is adding bitter sweet Durian Purée along with few types of syrup
Oh I remember having that on the streets of Malaysia. Is that one made from straight water? Although I enjoy durian, I always shy away from it in other forms like candy or puree. I only like it straight up.
Kind of Cooking - Sous Vide, Recipes, and More Yup just Plain shaved ice with few types of syrups with grass jelly , red beans, etc below the ice....agree durian is best having it natural
Oh my gosh, this looks so amazing! 😋 . sucks that I am not physically capable of waiting for ~five hours for it to freeze 😂
How have I never thought of this 😂 Thx
The milk bag is only in Toronto not the whole Canada. In Alberta our milk comes in the jug.
Ya same with BC. I don't understand the love the milk bags but I've never tried it to understand.
No??? There are milk bags everywhere in Canada, it’s also very common in both Ontario and Québec. Don’t go stating things without fact-checking first dude, that’s weird…
Hey! I tried and it works !!
Hope you get more subs bcs you deserve it!!
Thank you very much! hope you enjoyed it.
Omg i came here for shaved ice but didn't expect to find the "Off The Great Wall" girl!!! 😲
Hello! And welcome - the world is full of little surprises.
so much hard work. I found a cool Ice Shaver Commercial Electric Stainless Steel Ice Crusher Slicer Machine for like $250. Worth it if your work hour is above $50
Ayeee! Bagged milk is the bomb
Lol! Must be a Canadian speaking hahaha
I've never seen bagged milk! We have the plastic gallons or some paper cartons. Some still use glass! And we recycle the glass w the company. I want to know more about Canada! 🇨🇦 I'm down right next to Mexico! 🇲🇽
It took some time to get used to but now you’ll find non bagged milk take up too much space! Lol
@@KindofCooking I would rather have the bags and the milk pitcher. The gallons are big and bulky. We don't have recycling in my city, and they're not the type of plastic companies will pay for. The plastic bags are so much less waste!!
wow smart thanks
You're welcome!
great recipe!
is it possible if you don't use corn syrup?
thank you!😁

If I wanted to make matcha bingsu or chocolate bingsu, what would I need to do to modify your recipe? Thanks for the video!
I feel like if you try freezing the chocolate milk it would taste incredible!
Underrated vid
I agree 😏
Just get a ice shaver (make sure it has adjustable blade) if you're going to make asian shaved ice desserts with any regularity. I can make a bowl of shaved ice in like 10-20 seconds with a manual one with no mess, no cold hands. It's worth it if you love bingsu.
Would it get that texture if i used a ice smashing machine?
Bingsu is really fcking delicious not going to lie
Can you do this with coconut milk or just plain water?
I don't have a food processor, will it work in a high speed blender?
Unfortunately, I don’t think it would. It would be more like a slush instead of a fluffy ice.
hi, any substitute for corn syrup? thanks
Wow yummy 😋
Thank you 😋
What kind of milk did you use? Can I use any milk available in the market or there's only one milk that can be used in making bingsu?
We used 2% milk but you can also use whole milk.
What if we cant get corn syrup, any other substiutes?
You can try honey, or any type of glucose syrup.
I did honey I have no huge need for corn syrup
This is exactly what I do too! This is near impossible with water because it gets too hard
Can I use fresh milk?
I wonder is this is ok to use with halo halo?
Only eastern Canada uses milk bags.
but why??
❤ love it
great great great great!
Well this was right on time ... is there a sub for the corn syrup?
hmmm. I haven't tested anything, but it needs to be some sort of glucose syrup - which I guess you could make yourself without corn.
Actually even though it’s called corn syrup the ingredient list didn’t list corn... hahaha
might be late but you can try using honey. I often used it in recipes that called for corn syrup.
@@alexgade4512 did it work?
Question. What can I use if I don't have corn syrup? Will it work with just milk alone?
A lot of people just use milk and condensed milk
What milk is that?
Heyyyyyy whatever corn syrup works right?
Isit ok if I use karo corn syrup?
yes bc its corn syrup
Amazing!
Thanks!!
What if i dont have corn syrup? Can I replace it with sugar syrup or another syrup?
Corn syrup is to stabilize it so it doesn’t crack but you can try other sugars.
Can I just use selfmade syrup made out of sugar? I don’t know if we have cornsyrup in Germany 😅
You can use condensed milk
It’s rn 2 am and yall probs guessed it im gonna mk it 😎
Thanks so I will go with food processor haha 😂
sarap huhu
Is there anything I could substitute the corn syrup for? I am allergic and really want to try it💕
If you're allergic from the corn part of the syrup, try other types of glucose syrup available(potato, wheat, beet), mostly I find this at Chinese baking store. You can also use inverted sugar or golden syrup or honey but you'll need to add more since those syrups are a combination of glucose and sucrose, while you need the glucose part of the syrup for the ice to be "airy". I don't recommend this since it will make your ice really sweet.
Can you use light corn syrup???/
Yes you can ☺️
1 pipe corn syrup and 10 pots milk
What is mean?
What is the corn syrup alternative since Im allergic to it...Thanks
Try glucose syrup from wheat, potatoes, beet, etc. I'm not sure about the US but mostly glucose syrup at there are from corn hence, corn syrup. In Asia where I live, corn syrup is hard to find so most of the baking store sell glucose syrup from wheat or potatoes.
Can I use maple syrup
What are the measurements of milk and corn syrup you didn't say or showed the amount of each
1L of milk to 100ml of syrup. Here’s a link to the recipe: www.kindofcooking.com/how-to-make-shaved-ice-at-home-with-no-machine/
:)
Wow!!!!
Ooh does it work with plant based milk?
I think it could work. I haven’t tested it though.
can i put sugar or condensed milk on it?
Yup
If I use honey instead of corn syrup will it turn out the same?
Glucose does better in stopping it from cracking and crumbling, but it could work as well.
Dude I am also Canadian and have never seen a milk bag being sold here. But I like the shaved ice!
It's most common in Ontario
🤷♂️ I guess it's an Ontario thing. Which part of Canada do you live in?
Yep it's an Ontario thing 😅 There is some history about it based on the info from the web. Some metric system conversion back in the 70's. So the milk manufacturers changed to bags for easy cost-effective conversion.
What if i don't have corn syrup? Can i use regular sugar instead?
Yes. you can try with real sugar. The corn syrup gives it a bit more flexibility so it doesn't crack and stays together.
Corn starch is not the same as corn syrup. You can't convert the two in the kitchen. It'll require chemical reactions to break down the starch into simple sugars.
Corn syrup is known as very bad can't we just use normal sugar?
Hi! can i ask if u can use condensed milk instead of corn syrup?
We haven’t tried that, but the corn syrup is to prevent cracking. Hehe if you’re up for it, give it a try. Should work, don’t think there will be adverse effects.
@@KindofCooking ah okay, thank u so much!
Tbh mine melted when i tried to hand grate it
Hi.. may i ask what other syrup can i use to substitute corn syrup?
Glucose can work too
@@KindofCooking thank you 😍😍😍
Simple sugar syrup will do.
Simply take 100 grams of sugar and add 100 ml of boiling water. Stir to dissolve the sugar and there you go: 100 ml of perfect syrup for this recipe.
@@el_millonario thank you.. 😊
I live in canada and I've never heard of bagged milk
Maybe it’s an Ontario thing. Where abouts are you?
@@KindofCooking british columbia
it's in quite a few places in canada
do you use evaporated milk or normal dairy milk?
sugakick - on this one we used 2% milk but you can use any percentage. I didn’t try with evaporated milk.
@@KindofCooking hi, im sorry i didn't know what 2% milk is. Can you explain please? 😊
@@khounapa9306 2% milk refers to the fat percentage. So, when you hear "whole milk," it means none of the fat was taken out. I read an article just now that says that 2% milk has 5 grams of fat, while whole milk has 8 grams. 1% milk has 2.5 grams, and lastly, skim milk has 0 grams of fat.
The change differs depending on how much fat is in it.
Personally, I really like whole milk because it tastes creamer and has a slightly more creamy texture. :)
But 2% is a good middle ground between skim milk and whole milk, it's right down the middle.
Can we use boiled milk ?
I think so. Still need to freeze after 😊
Thanks
Did you use whole milk?
Great question!! Sorry, should have specified, we used 2%, but you can use any type.
making my own corn syrup
ooo. How do you do that?

Hi i am deaf,i hope i can get the recipe still...can u able to write down pls?if ure not busy😊
Can i not use corn syrup?
I think so!
milk bags i live in bc but i dont got milk bags?
I guess it's an Ontario thing???
Why did you move Canada?
For the winters ;)
I still can't find that milk bag in Alberta
Maybe it’s an Ontario thing
Kind of Cooking - Sous Vide, Recipes, and More maybe ahahaha
Has anyone tried to blend this up to achieve the same texture ?
We haven't personally tried, but my gut tells me it won't be the same. I feel like a blender would create more of a slushy rather than a soft fluffy ice. I remember Vitamix does something like this for sherbet, but it's not light and fluffy.
I wonder if you could use coconut milk instead.
That’s a great question! Are you willing to give it a try? Hehe would love to know… gut says it will probably work.
Background music : Vợ con thơ
I made this with my pandan flavor so it's kinda like bingsu pinoy version? Lol
Can we skip the glucose?
No sorry, the glucose is what gives it the fluffiness. Maybe you can try honey or some other liquid sugars...
Also i make this in my version accidentaly
what can I use instead of corn syrup ???
I’m Canadian born and raised in Vancouver and I’ve never seen milk bags in my entire life. What are you talking about we use milk bags in Canada??
Hahaha 🤣 I certainly didn’t bag it myself. Maybe an east side thing.
You’re supposed to be making water snow. That’s what shave ice 🍧 is
Milk>>>
Thank you for this! Really appreciated it. :)
But I gotta say tho. you said it use less plastic when they use that packaging for their milk, but the rest of the world use cartons or bottles lol. Cartons are more eco friendly. I don't know what you're talking about but that definitely isn't "better for the environment". Hahahahah
Haha that was the prevalent theory. Haha we have a lot of bagged milk.
US and Canada uses cartons for 2L and less. But we use big plastic jugs for 4L. I've never used bags because that's an East Coast Canadian thing. I assume the "better for the environment" is that it's better than the 4L jugs? But I don't know.
