So the question is how do you do that? Music is a set of abstract patterns. They have to be reconstructed by the listener for the listener to apprehend the patterns. In classical music the main task of the performer, in my view, is to make those patterns apparent. In terms of composition, though, there is a conundrum. Patterns that are too obvious are not interesting or appealing. Patterns that are too subtle and clever are lost on undiscerning audiences. There is a small window between simple enough to attract a wide audience and complex enough to be truly satisfying, and the very best art generally falls outside of that window. If the undiscerning are browbeaten strongly and consistently enough over a sustained period, they will eventually verbally concede the worth of the complex art, but they will never really appreciate it.
