I don’t think Maximus was watching a television show, I think it might have just been a looped recording of a waterfall which given his upbringing might be just as enticing/entertaining as a proper show would be to us.
When your whole life involves struggling to find the absolute basics of survival, yeah, a video of so much natural, clean, rad-free water? Makes sense.
I think even if the Master knew about this vault, he knew it's useless for his plan, because he needed people with pure genetics and this vault was full of mutated people
He may not have had use for them genetically, but he would have either destroyed them or set up sentries in the form of super mutants or the Children of thr Cathedral to keep watch. I don't think he is would have left Vault 4 alone. Look at the surveillance he kept with Necropolis.
14:50 Huh? That conversation is not hard to explain at all. Maximus was a 6-year old adopted into a semi-religious cult and given no sex education. And now he has a crush on a girl and acts like a child would. Lucy is from a Vault society where there is almost no privacy and sex is treated practically, and without fuss. Remember 'cousin stuff', 'what's your sperm count' and her first 'Okie dokie' scene? Those two utterly different starting points end up in exactly that conversation.
It is also important to note that Maximus sniffs the air and then tells Lucy "You smell nice". Lucy has a confused look on her face because in that moment she is dirty, and hasn't bathed in a few days. Lucy looks down towards her body and realizes that Maximus is smelling her lady stench, a smile appears on her face and she asks. "Do you wanna have sex?" I don't think there was a deeper point other than having some comedic relief.
@@jasonm2245 I figured it was because they were stuck in there for a few hours with nothing to do, and she figured out he had a thing for her. So why not?
@@jasonm2245in the wasteland you have to be constantly looking at your surroundings, always on edge for possible dangers. Vault 4 was the first time Max and Lucy were in relative safety.
While I like your theory on Lucy and Maximus's weird conversation, I think the simpler explanation is that both have different views on sex. Lucy is raised to think it's vital to reproduce in order to recreate civilization, while Maximus is raised in a cult where their views on sex is more like what a monk would think. It'll seem strange to us because we don't live in the same world and we weren't raised like them
I only just realized how proud the overseer must be of his great uncle was the one to kill the awful original overseers. Maybe that’s why he’s overseer? Because his ancestor was the one to kill the evil ones?
Story wise, this vault has such a unique plot twist. Usually, people would expect a plot twist where this seemingly good vault would turn out to be evil, but nobody would expect that it would actually be genuinely good with just a horrific history. Love how even when they were gonna exile Lucy, they still gave her a bunch of food for her life outside, with someone to help her carry the goods to the gate. I have to say the vault 4 is unexpectedly heartwarming.😅
A little thing I noticed in Vault 4. It's FISH themed. They have caviar, oysters, fish tanks, ocean view art and stylized fish wallpaper in the rooms. Even the TV is showing waterfalls! I thought it was a little nod to what the scientists were doing - making... weird fish people/gulpers!
Do you think it might be a nod to H.P Lovecraft? I haven't read his works but from what I've heard he liked to use the sea as a symbol for forbidden knowledge, and this sort of body horror seems right up his alley
15:35 Love how the cyclops puts on glasses - spectacles with two separate lenses, like that's going to make a difference. No wonder he couldn't read Lucy's name. LOL
Heh, they should have given a mannerisms where he keeps shifting the glasses to switch between the lens he uses with the joke being that they're prescription glasses from before he was mutated, and so are useless with new eye.
The scene where lucy asks if maximus wants to have sex, it is because she came from a vault that values reproduction, since they're breeding stock for vault 31. They learn what sex is and practice since childhood. She said that "playing with your cousins is okay when they're young". They are even tested regularly for fertility
I love the implication that despite being completely amoral human-experimenters, the Hawthornes were genuinely happily married. Even while the wife’s barricading the lab door she’s still using pet names lol. I do wonder whether those two children were ACTUALLY theirs, or if they were plants for the commercial in order to achieve a (literally) nuclear-family vibe.
@@peteallred2297same in the real world lmao everything we currently know about the human body (from pain tolerance to the literal composition of water) was discovered by scientists who ripped human beings open, kept them alive while they poked and proded their internal organs and measured the human body modern pain killers came from scientists forcing POWs to walk on jagged beds of rocks barefoot for 12 hours at a time and then dosing them up with pain killers until they found the perfect mixture
@@peteallred2297 Hard disagree. Morality is completely unnecessary for science. You need no further proof than to look back at history and see the kind of disturbing and inhumane things that were done in the name of scientific progress. Arguably; the only reason the "scientific community" of the modern day adheres to any level of ethical restrictions is a fear of retaliation from morally minded individuals who won't tolerate innocent people they care for being treated as subjects for testing an observation.
I think that maximus' side of the awkward conversation would make sense due to the brotherhood likely not giving high quality sex education due to the whole... cult thing. And Lucy being from a vault where matters like sperm count are discussed openly wouldn't have a social expectation to not be as open as she is. Imo it makes sense for them to have an interaction that... cringe-worthy
Considering the BoS rarely allowed outsiders to become members they'd need to replace losses which makes Maximus not being that knowledgeable about sex/reproduction (not even knowing about an erection) very strange
Yeah, a couple of points in his video here are a bit off. E.g the '80 volunteers' probably weren't test subjects. They probably were really scientists, and when they were stuck in the vault during the apocalypse, they just started with the planned way of testing by kidnapping teat subjects.
@@thestanleys3657 Oh it gets worse. The Institute did have one legit concern - genetic damage caused by the bombs hence the original motive for kidnapping Shaun. So what does that have to do with BoS? Well you wrote it yourself. They rarely accepted outsiders which raises the question how did they keep the numbers up? Only reason that can make sense is incestual relationships. Even Lucy's Vault admitted that was a problem for them hence the marrying of outsiders before genetic damage happened. Then there is the apparent segregation of male and female recruits in the TV show BoS. Now for obvious reasons that can be a good thing. . .for awhile. . .BUT. . .if the two sexes aren't introduced to one another at some point then the interest in the other and reproduction won't happen much.
The whole "cock explosion" dialog thing is weird yes. But remember these are two characters, one raised in a vault to be breeding stock, and the other a man raised to be more of a cog in the tech gathering machine instead a normal and well adjusted person.
Yeah I thought that even though the conversation felt uneasy and awkward, it was meant to be. The writers wanted to show us how strange human interaction would be in a world like this.
Also, don’t forget the shady sands are the decedents of vault 15 and they created the NCR. And both were societies with different peoples, classes and creeds.
My take on their weird conversation is that Maximus has a very low charisma, and being raised by the brotherhood likely meant no sex education. Lucy talked about sex very openly in the first episode and about "cousin stuff" and is clearly very comfortable with casual sex, and she likes Maximus. Being on opposite ends of this spectrum makes for a very strange interaction.
The reason Maximus is lacking in sex education is because squires don't have much of a shelf life, and thus the Brotherhood would rather train them in the skills that are useful for the Brotherhood's purposes rather than what they need to know as people, to make the most of what little time they expect the squires will have. This is supported by the fact that when Maximus (pretending to be Titus) claims that "Maximus" has been killed, they immediately send Thaddeus to him as a replacement squire right away without even bothering to subject Thaddeus to his induction rites.
Maximus was basically raised in a cult and raised to be a warrior monk - think of the brotherhood as being like the Catholic Crusaders. Catholic boys back in the day were taught nothing about sex and then when they were taught anything about sex, it was made up stuff in order to deter them from having premarital or casual sex. For example, 2 common myths Catholic boys back in the day were told was that if they masturbated, they would either go blind or they would grow hair on their palms. So I’m imagining that the brotherhood was similar - if you have sex then your penis explodes like a pimple. Maybe they were taught it by the order or maybe since they never got any form of SexEd, a bunch of 10 year old kids got together and figured this was the most accurate description of what happened. Either way Boys are gonna get weirded out or scared by that so they won’t go around trying to have sexual experiences and will instead focus on being knights and the best members of the brotherhood they can possibly be.
14:50 I took the way Maximus was talking wasn't about the gas but the fact that he was a child when the brotherhood took him in so he never got "the talk" from his parents and there is no way the brotherhood was teaching them sex ed, so unless one of the other initiates went out of the way to teach him he wouldn't know much and it's more likely the initiates that mostly kicked his ass would tell him something like "it gets hard and pops" to mess with him.
I'm assuming you were a kid once, or maybe are now. Did you learn everything you know about sex from school? He had at least 1 friend, there would be discussion at a minimum. As for the Brotherhood not teaching them, It's a cult. If there's one thing cults teach, it's how to grow their numbers. Even assuming this isn't the same Brotherhood chapter from NV who disapproved of Veronica because of her "proclivities," they would at least want their member to know the basics.
@@LifesGuardian Yes, he could learn in a cult about sexed, but not all the bells and whistles. It will be limited to keep them in line for what they want. I would highly suspect the Brotherhood would couple you and you wouldn't choose yourself. That would be my guess. In order for that to happen, they want you to not know or be fearful of the event so you don't think about another in your chapter distracting you from your job. It's exactly what happened at my school when they said "well to be 100% sure you won't get an STI, is to not have sex or any feelings whatsoever with a girl". Some boys will go "oh f off" and be rebellious, others will take that to heart and not have sex until they are well into their 20s. :) ah, the 60s.
@@METALFREAK03 "Yes, he could learn in a cult about sexed, but not all the bells and whistles. It will be limited to keep them in line for what they want." You're assuming that they consider the male anatomy "bells and whistles." I assure you they do not. When I said basics, I meant they'd explain his anatomy, what happens to it, and where he needs to put it to make a baby. Women's anatomy I could buy him being ignorant about, his own, not a chance. He knew to call it a *Ahem* after all. Even then, that's a stretch because they have doctors who would know about anatomy from autopsies and scribes from books. "I would highly suspect the Brotherhood would couple you and you wouldn't choose yourself. That would be my guess." No, the Brotherhood does not arrange relationships. Otherwise, Veronica wouldn't have dated another woman for the other members of the chapter to disapprove of. "In order for that to happen, they want you to not know or be fearful of the event so you don't think about another in your chapter distracting you from your job." Fraternization interfering with the job I could understand. For example, 2 Paladins or 2 scribes, because if either of them got promoted, they'd have significant influence on the career of the other. However, splitting the difference doesn't seem to be a problem. In NV Veronica mentions her father being a paladin and her mother a scribe. This way, neither can interfere with the career of the other. As for interference with their job, most militaries have rules about engaging in sex while on missions. I'd imagine it'd be something like that. "It's exactly what happened at my school when they said ""well to be 100% sure you won't get an STI, is to not have sex or any feelings whatsoever with a girl""." The problem with this analogy is that your school had a vested interest in their students not having children. The Brotherhood does not. In fact, I can imagine the opposite being true considering how distrustful the Brotherhood is of "outsiders." They do not recruit outside of their order, except for the main character, specifically because of it. Even on the east coast when Elder Lyons broke from the west, they still did not. Again, except for the MC. "Some boys will go ""oh f off"" and be rebellious, others will take that to heart and not have sex until they are well into their 20s." I don't see this being a problem in the Brotherhood. Well, except for the abstaining until 20's part. Again, the Brotherhood would want their members to have kids, your school did not. STD's would be feared, sure, but with such a small pool of "breeding stock" and their views on "outsiders" I doubt that it would be a common occurrence since contracting such a disease would all but guarantee to reveal the illicit activity you engaged in while on mission. That, I would imagine would be punished severely given how easily transmissible they are and how often such infections can lead to sterility or death.
@@LifesGuardianhis one friend is non-binary though, and might not have the same genitals as him. Which would mean they wouldn't know anymore than he did about how his genitals work. I learned a lot of my sex-ed from the internet because my school's sex-ed sucked, and they don't have the internet anymore in fallout.
@@LifesGuardian that is a lot of faith that the brotherhood cares about it's cattle, they've shown several times in the show that this brotherhood doesn't give a shit about the initiates, they are meat for the meat grinder, assuming they would teach them anything other than what they are looking for is a big leap given what THIS brotherhood does
I think it's weird how so many people don't realize that the sex discussion was supposed to be embarrassing and cringe-inducing. And it actually reveals a lot about Maximus and the Brotherhood. Lucy and Vault 33, too. Vault 33 residents are very casual about sex because they have a very deliberately sex positive culture.
@@richardarriaga6271 Yes, but even beyond that, their society is seemingly okay with incestuous relationships so long as there's no reproduction. They're very sex-positive, which surprised me since this is a video game IP. I really hope that going forward, Bethesda is less afraid to delve into mature themes like this.
It's hardly sex positive, they're only allowed to marry with members of the other Vaults and aren't allowed to do anything procreative withanyone they're not married to, to prevent inbreeding. Which is why they needed two breeding Vaults.
It should be noted that the Gulper in the show seems to be based on the Axolotl due to its pink skin tone, overall shape and the whisker-like appendages on the side of the head. I don't know enough about them to know if they're radiation resistant or if they're known for consuming their parents or what the inside of their mouth looks like, but it certainly creates a unique and engaging design for the creature. I also like that the lack of teeth means it can't chew food and thus has to gulp its food down whole using its mouth fingers. It seems obvious now but I never thought the name of Gulpers to be a literal description. I thought it was just a colourful way of saying they're ravenous.
Mind you I can one hundred percent see this in a game where Ox falls through the trapdoor but he's his usual self being a chem-addicted power armor wielding madman who actively hunts for any working terminals to find lore. Which is sorta horrifying but also sorta hilarious. (points shotgun at overseer) "GIVE ME YOUR TERMINAL ACCESS!" "Okay, okay, Mr. Boxhorn!"
That would be hard to hide however. The numerical name system inherently implies the existence of Vaults with prior Numbers. If you lived in Vault 101, I bet the discussion of Vaults with Numbers 100 to 1 comes up a lot.
Some Vaults were well hidden while others we're in Plain view of the Public. Vault 19 is hidden underground in a manhole cover in a parking lot, where as Vaults 3, 76 or 51 are basically built on the side of mountains or have a whole front door with the number in your face in large font.
21:16 this little montage of how happy Maximus was in the vault makes me so sad knowing how the season ended. He really wanted to just have some peace 🥺
I've just realized that the overseer is actually Jerry, from "Rick&Morty". No wonder he was so quirky. But this puts a dilemma: from the games, we know that vault 13 and 14 are close to Shady Sands, yet, there's no mention of them. I know the plot moves forward, but as a fan of the 1st 2 games, I'm intrigued about what happened to them.
In the game Shady Sands isn’t close to LA, or Santa Monica either. It’s quite a bit north of those locations, and in turn Vault 4. Not sure why the show put Shady Sands so close to LA
@@eriksand9262 I mean, at first, I thought vault 4 was 14 and kind of made sense for the "mutated residents", as the experiment was the vault door was broken. But by the end of F2, I understood that vault 14 was integrated to Shady Sands (NCR , as it was called in the game). So, if a catastrophic event happened, how come they didn't go to vault 14? It was refurbished by the NCR and functional, as Tandy was looking forward to annex it. But I don't want to be a weirdo that nitpicks the series. I just have issues in the plot that bother me.
Looking at the West Coast Gulper again, you can see in some shots of it trying to climb up on the dock that it has 5 digits on each forelimb. The middle three are the longest, and all of them look opposable. Like each digit is segmented and bendable at multiple points
I must confess, I was IMMEDIATELY suspicious of everyone in Vault 4 and I apologise to them for that. As for the whole test subject thing appearing in the commercial, I've two theories: 1: Vault Tec's Censoring Department missed it whilst scrutinising the takes to ensure nothing "iffy" ended up in the commercial, leading to someone later getting fired 2: Vault-Tec was aware of it and just didn't care, remarking "When the siren starts sounding, those fools will probably sell their Grandmother to get in, regardless of what they think they saw or heard in our commercials...."
@timothyharris1125 Same moralistic code as the Neighbourhood Watch Association from Hot Fuzz, murdering people and claiming "It's all for the greater good.."
I assumed it was because it was a vault experiment openly ran pre war as the commercial stated i mean everyone would be classified as a test subject given that context.
Considering that the vault is run by scientists and is all about science? They probably assumed 'test subjects' meant rats or other animals like in most labs, not the actual vault dwellers themselves. They didn't need to hide anything since no one believed that VaultTec, the "saviours" of humanity, would do such a thing. We see this with Cooper who, despite being involved with VaultTec, doesn't believe the conspiracies and trusts VaultTec until he sees errors and gaps of information that build up to the point that he cannot ignore them. VaultTec made it so anyone who spoke against them was labelled a communist so no one WANTED to question them or think they could do anything wrong since they were meant to be saving people.
I think the sex conversation was just supposed to be cringy. Lucy is shown to be very candid about sexual relations. Her introductory scene is about her interviewing to go to bone town like she's trying to win a job. Sex is something practical to Lucy and she's isolated and bored, and clearly liked it despite how her first time panned out. Maximus on the other hand is our boy with the idiot savant perk. He grew up in a society that probably doesn't put that much focus on sex and intimate relationships. While it's not stated in the current era of the West Coast or East Coast brotherhood it's been generally implied that only knights and up (and their equivalent on the scribe side) get to rear families. You never hear about scouts, initiates, or squires having families, and this cold be due to age, but I think the BoS who like to live in bunkers would put a premium on space. Maximus is shown to be very ignorant or the birds and le bees. So it's really just bored Lucy unromantically propositioning ignorant Maximus.
The raider is not evem her first sexual experience lol. 32 and 33 are experiments for breeding of 31 hence their sexual priorities of procreation and strict rules against inbreeding.
@METALFREAK03 I disagree that dry humping is not sexual experience. If you can get pregnant from it, then it most definitely is sexual experience. The friction is just coming from elsewhere.
With the Overseerer it's probably they put him there more as a figurehead, while "Birdy" is actually running the Vault. (Kinda like they have done in other shows where the "leader" is an idiot but there 2nd in command is smart.)
I am thinking of a type of co-government, where you always have someone representing the descendants of the original vault dwellers, and someone representing the Shady Sands refugees
Hell yeah!! Loving these show lore videos. Vault 4’s overseer was one of my favourite characters in the show next to Goosey. Love the implied running gag of him naming people after animals 😂
I‘m from Germany and just realized that Benjamin is played by Chris Parnell, who voices Jerry in Rick and Morty, makes me appreciate the cast even more 😅
The odd behavior of Lucy and Max in the quarantine area could be explained by a slow introduction of aerosolized chems. Something that could render them more placid or, as you said, a libido enhancer. The rest is chalked up to their personal experiences with sex talks; Lucy's Vault treating fertility numbers as a matter of fact versus Max being raised to live (and die) for the Brotherhood's ideals. The overseer's behaviors in particular could be a consequence of some past experiments, as you said. I like the idea that he's the overseer because he has a family history, and probably because of his simple and childlike mental state. A bit of a liability for taking care of chems and machinery, but great as a friendly face to greet newcomers long enough to direct them to Birdie.
When Maximus tried to save Lucy he was the definition of I woke up and chose violence after Lucy asked if Maximus could stay but after what he did they were like "I'm sorry but he can't stay either!" I have a bad feeling that Maximus will tell the brotherhood of steel about vault 4 after what Lucy told him she saw!
@@chadharger9323 the brotherhood learns about Lucy and they want to know what vault she came from so they can take the resources and technology and stop what evil experiment they are conducting their!
I have one more theory about the refugees from Shady Sand, Vault 4 and Moldaver. As we know that Moldaver was a pre-war scientist that originally work on the cold-fusion technology but we didn't know about how did she survived the war and lived to 2295, my theory is that she was abducted as a 'test subject' of Vault 4 but she didn't get experimented and got locked up in cryogenic chamber. Around 2270~2277 (before Shady Sands 'fall'), Vault 4 dwellers check her up and realised that Moldaver is still normal and released her out from slumber. Moldaver then move up to the surface and found the thriving civilisation of NCR, she joined NCR as a government official and sky-rocketly rose into the ranks. When Vault-Tec nuked NCR, Moldaver led survivors back to Vault 4, some joined Birdy and lives in the Vault while some others joined Moldaver as the Shady Sands reconstruction authority. This would explained why Shady Sands survivors worshiping Moldaver as their saviour and why Moldaver is still alive without being ghoulified.
Not a bad theory. I am thinking something similar, except the abducted part. I think she bought a spot in a vault just in case nukes dropped, and vault tec instructed the original Overseer to put her in cryo and never wake her up. Once the residents rebelled, they themselves thawed her to either help overthrow the Overseer or to just free her once they did. The rest with her leaving and discovering NCR and helping survivors reach the vault is an awesome theory.
I saw an ad that sell the Freezing Chamber and the ad reads " you can come to life at any time you set", so maybe Moldaver bought one and froze herself.
I think Maximus was just shocked that she was so forthcoming with wanting sex that it caused him to have a brain fart. He's not exactly a charismatic type.
I feel like the “weird dialogue” in room 604 was rather in keeping with both characters, as far as what was said. Regarding why it was said, it might as well be chalked up to just how long they were in there.
In terms of the "weird" dialogue, I've always thought it wasn't out of place, just a little hard to understand. Maximus grew up in an entirely or largely male society, while Lucy gew up in a vault that valued education, scientific thinking etc. From this perspective, its not too hard for me to imagine that Maximus's idea of sex would be more immature, and outright incorrect, as no one where he comes from fully understands it anyways, and lucy, I'm sure, doesn't come from a vault where having sex/kids is seen as a taboo, bad thing, like we see in the first episode, talking about sex is such an open thing between vault dwellers, which is why she carries on the conversation with Maximus like nothing weird was happening
19:04 Just FYI, Birdie is a perfectly normal name. It's not super common today, but it was pretty common a generation or two ago. I personally know a woman by that name.
I was always wondered about those kids in the commercial,. I mean their parents were killed by the people they experimented on.. So what do you do with the kids? Benjamin might be sufferings from inbreeding issues or that the experiments lowering the subjects intelligence . It is a bit heart breaking if you think about the fact Birdie might have know Maximus as they were residents in Shady Sands together and possibly have meet Lucy.
Vault 4 is definitely one of the more unique vaults and it’s probably going to take some adjusting compared to just being out in the wastelands, but I think even I would want to live in vault 4
I think another thing Vault 4 shows is how being on the surface had forever changed how Lucy views the world. She’s way more distrusting of others and actively questioning the authorities in charge. She can never go back to vault 33 after this and is forever changed due to her experiences on the surface.
Tbf. Overseer Benjamin might just be THE BEST OVERSEER IN ALL OF FALLOUT...since he is just a whimsical goof amd not an utter monster, unlike every other Overseer ever😂
Sex in Lucy's vault doesn't at all seem to be taboo. Useful when you're everyone's cousin I guess. As for Maximus. I don't think the Brotherhood ever had sex-ed in their curriculum. Especially considering the East-coast Era Brotherhood has a plethora of recruits and doesn't need to resort to natural means for member replacement.
That's because it is an axolotl but all salamanders are considered as gulpers in the fallout universe, just like all mutated crustrations are categorized as mire lurks.
I thought the Show Gulper (which was derived from a Axolotl) because they were born from humans, so they had partial human DNA, causing human finger-mouths and human hands.
@@jakespacepiratee3740 so basically the only thing in common that east coast gulpers and west coast gulpers have is they are both based on amphibians, just like the only thing all mirelurks have in common are they are all based on, evolved from crustasions. The east coat gulpers evolved from hellbender salamanders in the wild, thebes coast ones were created by splicing salamander dna into human babies.
Overseer Hawthorne definitely gets some credit for spending his final minutes recording his last log entry rather than trying to fend off the revolting Gulper.
Im pretty sure the "Gulper" is actually an Axolotl. Axolotl's would make the most sense here because they look the same, and Axolotl's have a high resistance to cancer (1000 times higher than other mammals) which makes them extremely resistant to radiation.
On the weird conversation between Maximus and Lucy, I think there's another thing that explains it. It seems like Sex Ed isn't something the Brotherhood taught Maximus, which makes sense in my eyes. They're soldiers, and they don't want them sleeping around during their studies. Plus, Vault Dwellers have very different views of sex and relationships, since they're all about continuing civilization.
Dude, if the BOS didn't sleep with each other, they would have died off. It is extremely rare for the BOS to take in outsiders from the wastes on the west coast
@@jvazacas I'm not saying they never sleep with each other. Just that teaching it isn't a priority. If shit happens, shit happens. But they just don't do much to keep members from being distracted.
Ox, i dont think the gas did anything to em. I didnt find it cringy. My friends who watched it, also didnt think it was cringe, either. It was a funny moment, meant to be taken as a funny moment.
Weird as that dialogue might've come across, I actually thought the idea was quite refreshing. Even on her wedding day, you see that Lucy has a positive and open outlook on her sexuality, which is really nice to see. She's still the bright-eyed, naive and somewhat more inocent character. The "Good Karma" character, if you may. And its really nice to see a story where a female character being "good" does not equate "virginal". That was the trend in stories for far too long, where female characters who were positive in their attitude toward their own sexuality were either punished for it in the narrative, or "mended their ways and settled down". Lucy being kind, smart and sex-positive all in one was refreshing, and I liked it.
One of the things that I noticed is that the overseer is obsessed with rules and norms. It is normal for an overseer to drink coffee but not normal for an overseer to be the one to remove old coffee cups. He doesn't like letting in new people, but he does because that's the rule. He has one eye, but he uses glasses that are designed for someone with two eyes. He probably remembers seeing a previous overseer use two lense glasses, so he will use them, even though they do not help him at all and it would be so easy to rig up a single lense pair for himself or even to simply hold one of the lenses in front of his eye. Even though she claims to be "Lucy", to his eye the record says "Gucy" and he has to stick to the record.
I kinda wonder if the east and west coast gulpers have the same sort of origin, if they were both the result of Vault Tec experiments. The west coast using local axolotl while the east was using local salamanders, both to study the effects of radiation though clearly different paths to that with the west straight up using human DNA (and human test subjects) to achieve their goals while the east coast seem far less human if human at all.
Tbf. As a modern day wagelsave...I'd have gladly joined up with Vault4's residents post the war and the liberation and would have LOVED enjoying a relaxed and basically a carefree life where the community cares for eachother and is just an overwhealmingly pleasant experience and a way of life...
Yes...but I don't think it means exactly what we think... I don't personally think a full grown human became a gulper...but more so...the pack/school of fish was all his family members in a sense thru birth.
@@SuperCaspermanit’s literally stated that the full grown one is his uncle Peter (in the lab). Meaning the one in the wild is not. It’s also a separate experiment because presumably “uncle” means a man, not an impregnated woman. Vault 4 did multiple experiments.
Lucy's and Maximus' cringey sex conversation could easily be explained by their backgrounds. It is not out of character. You don't need the gas explanation. Lucy: Grew up in a vault where the residents are "breeders" for Bud's buds. Was groomed from an early age to be sexually open, had a lot of sex education, experimented sexually with her cousin. Pretty open about sex. She's said cringey things about sex previously. When she marries Monty, she immediately asks him his sperm count. When he doesn't know how to answer her, she goes on and on about it until she is stopped by Stephanie Harper, who has more etiquette on a question like that being from 2077. Maximus: Very ignorant on all things sex. BoS probably did not educate them at all on sex. Because the BoS primary goal is the gain technology, and to be loyal to the brotherhood, they probably shamed anything sexual. In the barracks Maximus sees a guy masturbating and turns around in disgust. Further, if their inhibitions were loosened by the gas, why was Maximus so uncomfortable with a proposition for sex? They weren't. If his inhibitions were loosened by horny gas, he would have had sex with Lucy. Instead, he was resistant, guarded, and uncomfortable, the opposite of loosened inhibitions!!! I love watching your analyses, Oxhorn, but you really miss the ball with this one.
14:45 Also worth mentioning, it seems like Lucy and other residents in her vault simply used secc as something casual to relieve themselves, and ofc this combined with "honry chems" and being knocked out... yeah. =P
Question: do you think House also experimented in the provided vaults like with other companies or he realise how pointless it is, and just put his attention with his anti nuclear air defence system?
I honestly find it hilarious just how much the vault 4 episode tried to show it to be a typical fallout vault and it just turns out it’s just eccentric and full of delightful weirdos
14:43....no... experiments have stopped in vault 4 all together besides keeping them alive/checking on them I guess until they can figure something out
How do you even solve that like...bunch of pregnant ladys in frozen in cryo and each one have ready to pop out a swarm of killing mechines or anything new they where trying out explians why the doc freaked out at a small noise i would if that was my working conditions.
8:01 I don't think that it's about them studying the effects of radiation on human DNA. I'm pretty sure the reason why they were trying to mix the DNA of radioactive RESISTANT creatures with human DNA, was to create humans that were resistant to radioactivity. Like a ghoul but not "undead" so to speak. That would allow the dwellers to live on the surface more easily and take over the other civilizations.
I think the dialogue in the intake room was fine. Maximus being clueless makes sense and was pretty funny. And Lucy has an open mind and standards that are different from our own. Think about how she talks to Chet at the start of the show about “cousin stuff” or how she immediately jumps that raiders bones on her wedding night. I just don’t think “doing the deed” is that taboo in their world. Her initial suggestion to Maximus reminded me of her repeated line “okey dokie!” And what else are you supposed to do in there while you wait? Lol
im pretty sure Lucy just approaches sex casually. i mean she brought up sperm count minutes after getting married. and maximus likely grew up without any real form of sex education, so.
I agree with your take that Vault 4 is a beautiful thing. In a way it’s a rejection of Vault-Tec’s plans and ideology. Instead they created their own society and is a true refuge.
Did the Overseer Benjamin and Birdie dynamic remind anyone else of Dean Pelton and Frankie Dart from Community? Their working relationship has a similar vibe to me.
As one who watched the TV show and not play the games, I enjoy reading all the comments. Lots of theories that could be addressed in Season 2. As I don't freeze and rewind shows when I watch them on TV (usually), I didn't notice on the series that Gulper had human fingers in his mouth, nor his eyes were human. This is why I watch these UA-cam clips. I learn more about the show after watching Season 1, and appreciate the genius of the details. I do the same thing with the other shows I watch too (The Boys, The Expanse, for example).
Im not always a huge fan of oxhorns but this defiantly helped me understand this whole section of the show better then when i was watching it initially and rewatched it
It's kinda funny. The founders of Shady Sans were some of the dwellers of Vault 15, a vault where people of different cultures coexisted. And now, after all this time, some of the people of Shady Sans are back at a vault, again coexisting with a very different culture.
I really REALLY enjoyed this Oxhorn. It makes me happy knowing there's a society like this, in a vault no-less. Upon first watching this show I didn't think much about the community in Vault 4 but now it's probably one of my favorite pieces of lore. A society CAN be happy in the apocalypse
@alexshinra6722 I didn't really grasp this the concept of the vault, or the gravity of the situation. I haven't given the show a second watch so it was nice to relook at it with hindsight
oxhorn i have a question. Do you know if any of the vaults were hit by the bombs or we wont likely see due to changes in geography? because i think there is likely at least one
Vault 87 in Fallout 3, the door is intact and remains sealed but lies within one of the (if not the single) most radioactive locations in the game. As a result your forced to enter through Little Lamplight to avoid the Radiation, important part of the main quest line.

Depends on whether the Lieutenant was right about the problem being FEV and not radiation. Unless Vault 4 was using both for mutations.
@@richardarriaga6271likely a bit of both since FEV is the main mutator in the series
Those two utterly different starting points end up in exactly that conversation.
i think it's more of an explanation of why she brought it up at that time
It is also important to note that Maximus sniffs the air and then tells Lucy "You smell nice". Lucy has a confused look on her face because in that moment she is dirty, and hasn't bathed in a few days. Lucy looks down towards her body and realizes that Maximus is smelling her lady stench, a smile appears on her face and she asks. "Do you wanna have sex?"
I don't think there was a deeper point other than having some comedic relief.

He sounds sad that his great uncle had to suffer through that
Story wise, this vault has such a unique plot twist.
It nicely contrasts with what's going on in Vaults 31-32-33.
I did not notice that.
Also, oysters are considered an aphrodisiac, which is why he brings up sex again to Lucy in the room.
Do you think it might be a nod to H.P Lovecraft? I haven't read his works but from what I've heard he liked to use the sea as a symbol for forbidden knowledge, and this sort of body horror seems right up his alley
@@TheCitrusGames oooh! That is true - the body horror ad ocean theme would def be something that he would write!
It's definitely goosy
@@PlebNC If he's a descendant of the generation that was experimented on, Overseer Benjamin would've been born with his mutation.
The scene where lucy asks if maximus wants to have sex, it is because she came from a vault that values reproduction, since they're breeding stock for vault 31. They learn what sex is and practice since childhood. She said that "playing with your cousins is okay when they're young". They are even tested regularly for fertility
I must've missed all of that background

I do wonder whether those two children were ACTUALLY theirs, or if they were plants for the commercial in order to achieve a (literally) nuclear-family vibe.
I love how even when Hawthorne is literally about to die, he still insists that the best way to create a society is to have be run by scientists.
If the show were real, I would agree. In the fallout universe though, all scientists have zero morals
@@peteallred2297same in the real world lmao everything we currently know about the human body (from pain tolerance to the literal composition of water) was discovered by scientists who ripped human beings open, kept them alive while they poked and proded their internal organs and measured the human body
modern pain killers came from scientists forcing POWs to walk on jagged beds of rocks barefoot for 12 hours at a time and then dosing them up with pain killers until they found the perfect mixture
Yeah I think it was meant to be satire/irony
I believe I raised this exact point in a previous video, well, the Lucy side at least.
Glad I’m not the only one who came to this conclusion.
Considering the BoS rarely allowed outsiders to become members they'd need to replace losses which makes Maximus not being that knowledgeable about sex/reproduction (not even knowing about an erection) very strange
These points are pretty obvious and it’s strange that Oxhorn keeps missing this
Yeah, a couple of points in his video here are a bit off.
He also was relentlessly bullied so idk if he had any positive interaction with Females. His Rizz count is in the negatives tho that's for sure
@CitizenPoe two very different characters, have funny interactions. It's not head cannon
@@CitizenPoe or it's called having the slightest bit of analytical skill and not having every single plot point spoon fed to u but alright
Watching Maximus walking down the hallway menacingly makes realize that you need to quick save every time you do something stupid.
ah, the 60s.
@@METALFREAK03 "Yes, he could learn in a cult about sexed, but not all the bells and whistles. It will be limited to keep them in line for what they want."
You're assuming that they consider the male anatomy "bells and whistles." I assure you they do not.
That would be my guess."
No, the Brotherhood does not arrange relationships. Otherwise, Veronica wouldn't have dated another woman for the other members of the chapter to disapprove of.
"In order for that to happen, they want you to not know or be fearful of the event so you don't think about another in your chapter distracting you from your job."
Fraternization interfering with the job I could understand.
"It's exactly what happened at my school when they said ""well to be 100% sure you won't get an STI, is to not have sex or any feelings whatsoever with a girl""."
The problem with this analogy is that your school had a vested interest in their students not having children.
"Some boys will go ""oh f off"" and be rebellious, others will take that to heart and not have sex until they are well into their 20s."
I don't see this being a problem in the Brotherhood.

Due to how shady Vault Tec was... there might be more vaults "off the books"

I must confess, I was IMMEDIATELY suspicious of everyone in Vault 4 and I apologise to them for that.
As for the whole test subject thing appearing in the commercial, I've two theories:
1: Vault Tec's Censoring Department missed it whilst scrutinising the takes to ensure nothing "iffy" ended up in the commercial, leading to someone later getting fired
2: Vault-Tec was aware of it and just didn't care, remarking "When the siren starts sounding, those fools will probably sell their Grandmother to get in, regardless of what they think they saw or heard in our commercials...."
Knowing Vault-Tec it was mos definitely the latter. Vault-Tec had no Filter, didn't care or dared to do the unspeakable.
@timothyharris1125 Same moralistic code as the Neighbourhood Watch Association from Hot Fuzz, murdering people and claiming "It's all for the greater good.."
I mean, you aren't wrong to be suspicious of people in a vault. Playing through the games, most of the vaults are dangerous.
Exactly. breeding is a practical matter in a vault designed to last centuries and so in a vault, it is discussed very openly and frankly.

When Maximus tried to save Lucy he was the definition of I woke up and chose violence after Lucy asked if Maximus could stay but after what he did they were like "I'm sorry but he can't stay either!" Get the feeling Maximus is going to be flipflopping between allegiance to the BoS and friendship(love?) with Lucy.
@@chadharger9323 the brotherhood learns about Lucy and they want to know what vault she came from so they can take the resources and technology and stop what evil experiment they are conducting their!
I'm not so sure about that. Maximus was obviously having doubts about BoS mission statement.
I hope he stats quiet. We know how the BoS are with mutants.
@@commonviewer2488 especially what's in vault 4
8:02 I also really like that the gulper has a clear axolotl inspiration. Then again I particularly like the axolotl.
I think Maximus was just shocked that she was so forthcoming with wanting sex that it caused him to have a brain fart. He's not exactly a charismatic type.
His Charisma stats are horrendously low.
I feel like the “weird dialogue” in room 604 was rather in keeping with both characters, as far as what was said. Regarding why it was said, it might as well be chalked up to just how long they were in there.
Hey Oxhorn, I binged all your videos back when Fallout 4 was out. You were my go to. It’s good to be back.
Fun fact: the Japanese VA of the Overseer of Vault 4 (the Cyclops dude) is the one who did DIO in the Jojo series
Chris Parnell from snl. He's pretty funny, I hope he's in season 2 somewhere.
@@JReed7560 I said VA which means voice actor.
He is also zero figus from archer
Cyril figgus and also Jerry the dad in Rick and Morty @mitchelryan9282

Just FYI, Birdie is a perfectly normal name. It's not super common today, but it was pretty common a generation or two ago. I personally know a woman by that name.
I found the scene between Maximum and Lucy talking about having sex. I found the awkwardness of it very comical.
That in turn provides a nice explanation for why Hank's attempts to talk her down after she draws Maximus' gun on him failed.
I loved how Maximus coming out of the fridge echo's the Billy the kid from the fridge quest from fallout 4.
Anyone remember that crazy Fallout 4 mod that featured another Vault 4 with a crazy cult surrounding it? That one was awesome
I honestly thought this was about that tbh.
I haven’t watched the show yet.
Fourville. Great mod.🤘
@@GideonGrimmGamingwhy not go watch it NOW
The Gulper of the Series reminds me more of an mutated axolotl with fingers in the mouth.
Salamander and newt baby's look just like an axolotl. The thing that makes the axolotl special is that it reproduces without ever growing lungs.
@@jamesbenthul4590 also its even reported that sometimes an axolotl will transform into a salamander.
Overseer Hawthorne definitely gets some credit for spending his final minutes recording his last log entry rather than trying to fend off the revolting Gulper.
8:28 Reason why IRB is irritating yet necessary
Im pretty sure the "Gulper" is actually an Axolotl. Axolotl's would make the most sense here because they look the same, and Axolotl's have a high resistance to cancer (1000 times higher than other mammals) which makes them extremely resistant to radiation.
Yeah makes sense, your prepping with genetics for a nuke war...yeah make sense to drag in things that habe that triat.
I always look forward to his lore videos every Saturday and i hope we get the next faction video from fallout 4
It's crazy to think how Shady Sands returned to their roots. After all, they were founded by occupants of Vault 15.
Tbf. As a modern day wagelsave...I'd have gladly joined up with Vault4's residents post the war and the liberation and would have LOVED enjoying a relaxed and basically a carefree life where the community cares for eachother and is just an overwhealmingly pleasant experience and a way of life...
Dude, that sex convo made perfect sense in the show. Pretty normal for a lab rat and a cultist
18:10 wait you mean to tell me that's the gulper we seen already in the show is his great uncle Peter???? More or less
This whole vault is a testament to that one quote “I’m a science major! why do I have to take an ethics class?!”
10:27 I chuckled at the "noses on foreheads" that broke out into laughter when you chuckled right after while saying "Cyclops's" 😂
Vault 4 is what The Covenant think they were
As you may already know my good man, is that you are the Grandfather of story time. Thank You.
I have that same bowl Maximus eats popcorn out of. Its PYREX made in the 50's. Best thriftshop find ever. I love that bowl
14:45 Also worth mentioning, it seems like Lucy and other residents in her vault simply used secc as something casual to relieve themselves, and ofc this combined with "honry chems" and being knocked out... yeah. =P
Dude the dialogue in the "cock explode" scene is literally the best in the show. How you could take exception to that scene is beyond me...
Question: do you think House also experimented in the provided vaults like with other companies or he realise how pointless it is, and just put his attention with his anti nuclear air defence system?
0:10 you didn’t let him say the thing 😂
I honestly find it hilarious just how much the vault 4 episode tried to show it to be a typical fallout vault and it just turns out it’s just eccentric and full of delightful weirdos
14:43....no... experiments have stopped in vault 4 all together besides keeping them alive/checking on them I guess until they can figure something out
How do you even solve that like...bunch of pregnant ladys in frozen in cryo and each one have ready to pop out a swarm of killing mechines or anything new they where trying out explians why the doc freaked out at a small noise i would if that was my working conditions.
I love how Vault 4 just sticks out in the middle of Boneyard and The Master didn't see it.
I'm not sure the tests "failed". They looked like they worked to me. I can't imagine a world without man eating gulpers.
Her initial suggestion to Maximus reminded me of her repeated line “okey dokie!”
And what else are you supposed to do in there while you wait? Lol
im pretty sure Lucy just approaches sex casually. i mean she brought up sperm count minutes after getting married. and maximus likely grew up without any real form of sex education, so.
So in another universe Jerry Smith is a cyclops Overseer of Vault 4?🤔
Outrageous.😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I agree with your take that Vault 4 is a beautiful thing.
In a way it’s a rejection of Vault-Tec’s plans and ideology. Instead they created their own society and is a true refuge.
i really hope vault 4 makes a return in season 2, even if it is a vault advisory board gone rouge
I was a little disturbed and worried about Vault 4's abundant access to seafood considering the results of the vault's original experimentations.....
I like your theory about the arouser/sleeping gas a lot. This makes the scene much more watchable.
Shady *sands*
I really REALLY enjoyed this Oxhorn. It makes me happy knowing there's a society like this, in a vault no-less. Upon first watching this show I didn't think much about the community in Vault 4 but now it's probably one of my favorite pieces of lore. A society CAN be happy in the apocalypse
....how didnt you see that at the end of the arc?.
@alexshinra6722 I didn't really grasp this the concept of the vault, or the gravity of the situation. I haven't given the show a second watch so it was nice to relook at it with hindsight
@@AlexAutoAxe acutaly i cant fualt you there i did a rewatch...it dose set heavy vib of VT evilness which can alter how you view them.
I propose the theory that Overseer Benjamin is a figurehead. He's likable, upbeat, enthusiastic. Exactly the traits you want in a figurehead.
You didn't say "irregardless"?! There is some hope for humanity still alive! Well done Mr, I appreciate it.
I absolutely lost my crap at "like a Madonna NFT". I mean, the term ROFL was literal.
7:32 if I’m not mistaken, vault 4 took mutant creatures from the surface and hybridized them…. So they caught some gulpers and such.
oxhorn i have a question.
@@o.k.productions5202 I was thinking more vaults that are just gone or we won't ever be able to see. We could still get into that one but I'm thinking was there a vault that has no hope of being able to be entered a normal way or at all. Like one of they got hit by a nuke or one that got buried and there is no way in or out anymore
@9:00 - it's sad, that even as he was being attacked, the scientist didn't express remorse for what they had done. He actually said that this shouldn't taint the idea of more human-hybrid testing
