Veteran Scottie Pippen beefed with the Bulls because winning on a cheap contract stings | Part 2

  • In the '97 season Scottie Pippen was making $2.25 million, which sounds like a lot of money, I want that much money. But I'm not an elite NBA player (never given the chance).
Compared to salaries of elite NBA players, or even regular NBA players, Pippen was quite underpaid. In fact, he was the 128th highest paid player in the league. While leading, along with Michael Jordan and Dennis Rodman, the Bulls to a 5th title. Outrageous.
As you can imagine this led to bad blood-- in the form of tipsy verbal assault, near trades, purposefully delayed surgery, etc.
This is part two of the beef between Scottie Pippen and the people who paid him. AKA the beef between Scottie Pippen and the team he helped capture 6 titles. AKA Scottie Pippen vs The Chicago Bulls.

Pippen didn't have bad timing with his decision; he had the *worst* timing. It was really bananas in 1993-94 when young players angled for juicy extensions, and got them. Freshly drafted rookies successfully bargained for big contracts. All of a sudden proven superstars like Barkley, Malone, Robinson, Ewing, Drexler, and Pippen were making less $ than some guys who hadn't put on a uniform yet, and young players who hadn't done anything yet. It was insane that for a while guys like Pippen were making way less than guys who could barely make the playoffs.

Renegotiating contracts in order to improve the conditions purely to improve worker satisfaction in certain cases is a thing that can be done. That is always the dilemma between signing a long contract vs. a short contract. I could sign a long contract thinking it's gonna secure my future. Yeah, but that was bad editing on The Last Dance's part. When you're talking about Scottie Pippen being unhappy with his contract, I don't care about Michael Jordan playing baseball or coming back to visit whenever baseball season was over. That one episode where they covered Scottie sitting out that play where Kukoć hit that playoff game winner, I couldn't have cared less about what MJ thought. MJ said he told Phil Jackson, "Man, I don't know how Scottie can come back from that as the team's leader." How is that relevant? At that moment, I'd be more interested in Scottie explaining the growth in leadership. Everyone has to grow into the role, and his maturation would've been much more interesting than what Michael Jordan thought.

He was my favorite player of all times, but he has really gone of the rails recently. I think something flipped in him after his son's death, maybe and he just stopped giving a F***. The worst for me, was when he had his chance with Portland to best the Lakers in game 7, when they choked in the final minutes. The only team that could trouble Portland that year was LA, because nobody could stop Shaq. But Pippen didn't take charge, he kept facilitating to the other guys, Brian Grant, Rasheed Wallace, Stoudamire, etc. and they choked, but HE was the one with 6 rings, and while he wasn't in his prime, it was up to him. They won that game, they would've cake walked through the finals, and Pippen would have a 7th title without MJ, completely changing his legacy. He said after, "we played like cowards" and it was true, and it sickens me to this day.

But it's not all Pippen's fault. Krause was a jackass. And Reinsdorf pulled the trigger on the Pippen and whole team. Krause was asked to do a job and he did. But Krause could've stood up for the team more. And teams win championships not organizations. And not saying they don't have a part in it. But Krause thought that whole hearted the organization does it all. Which was wrong. But just my opinion on it. It's been how many years, 20 plus or longer and we're still talking about it. While I understand Scottie Pippen fighting for his worth, he chose to sign a bad contract in 1991. Because of that, HE is the reason for the beef.

What Pippen didnt understand was that they COULD NOT renegotiate his contract. That was the old CBA. The agreement with the players and owners signed in 91 prevented that. Remember when Kemp requested a new contract and he was ridiculed for it? Same thing, and if Pippen had stayed quiet, he'd got what he wanted. That was one of the reasons Krause didn't want to keep the team together.

Wow. How is it possible you skipped over the fact that MJ was only paid $3.85m in 95 and 96. MJ was the name, face, and shoes of league yet was earning less than some rookies. And side note: Rodman made less than Scottie in 96. If any NBA player had a reason to complain it was Dominque Wilkins. Look up how much earned from 1990-97. Dude never got a payday.. ever.
Ok.. so.. Scotty knowingly signed a crazy long contract (which btw was only outdated by two seasons) because he wanted the guaranteed financial stability for his family, which he got. Then MJ returns (took peanuts for 1-2 seasons) and because he does the leagues salary cap explodes. Which ultimately is the reason why Scotty’s career earnings were way more than Mike’s. And on top of all this, Kraus resigned Scotty so he got $20m more than he would of otherwise before being traded! Which effectively means Scotty got $26 over the final two seasons. Considering all this and Scotties tantrums during gameplay and off the court tirades, it’s clear the dude was in the wrong and still is. I can’t help but feel now that Scottie had more to do with the team disbanding than anyone else.

Bulls were 4-6 w/o Pippen in 1994. They were 51-21 w/ Pippen. He was 3rd in MVP voting in 94 and best player in NBA who was not a center named Olajuwon or Robinson. Shaq is arguably better in 94 but not really strongly arguable vs Pippens team success and Pippens composure and experience vs a young baby 🍼 Hughie SHAQ. And Ewing was near the top of the league but not as good as Pippen in 1994. And Karl Malone and Charles Barkley were not better than Pippen in 94.
Now in 95 yes the Grant less Bulls of Pippen and Kukoc were on their way out of serious title contention. They were 34-31 and about 6th or 7th seed headed if not for the infamous, "RETURN" of Michael "AIR" Jordan who helped Chicago finish 13-4 and a respectable and competeable 47-35 and #5 seed in the 95 East ➡️.
Pippen was running out of STEAM 🚂 in Chicago in year 2 SIN Horace Grant and Michael Jordan 23. But in 94, Pippen was one of the MVPS of the NBA.
95 he was too but he was starting to experience severely the reality of being a LONE ⭐ STAR in the NBA. And it wasn't the familiarity he was used to joining a 50-32 1987-88 Chicago Bulls squad. He was going thru Jordan's 84-85 to 86-87 experience and he was not MJ good or as youthful as MJ in his 94-95 and 8th season in the league.

But you can't talk about the regular season without talking about what happened in the playoffs. They come packaged together because it was the same season. Led the team to 55 wins but also quit on his team in the playoffs and was saved by a rookie Kukoc that helped the Bulls push the Knicks to seven games. Interesting how Pippen only wants to talk about the success but not the failure. It doesn't work that way. At the end of the day, the Bulls did not win in 94 and so it will not be remembered like the title years. That's the way it goes. It's all about winning, not whining.

I watched a great set of videos how pippen was the most overrated of all time. I was thinking that's crazy until I watched it. Pippen if drafted by sac. Instead of next to the #goat mj would be just another forgotten but good small fwd. Like a Weatherspoon who always owned pippen btw. I think pippen was blessed to be mj's best role player. When pippen had his selfish mid season surgery to " enjoy his summer " Rodman stepped up & the bulls didn't miss a beat. Pippen played the exact role perfectly he needed to play to compliment superman. In all those finals & play off battles how many games to pippen take over ? O. How many big buckets did he hit to win a playoff game? O. Kukoc did in that embarrassing selfish display where pippen quit on his team. The Knicks came back from 21 pts down. If kukoc didn't hit that it was ot & the Knicks had the momentum. If they had won the bulls were toast going down 2-0. They lost the series btw in 7. The Knicks destroyed them in game 7. The next year b4 mj returned the bulls were below .500. When mj returned they were only the 5th seed & lost. Mj hadn't gotten his legs under him after 18 months away. Pippen never won a thing again after he left the bulls. If pippen was drafted by any other team their is no way he would have been on the dream team , selected after the bulls won their 1st title. In fact the only play pippen is memorable for is dunking on an already falling back Ewing then stepping over him taunting him then pointing in spike Lee's face. So all those years so many bulls playoff games he has only one memorable hi light & it's really b/c he of the there of being that brazen. The guy just didn't have any kind of killer instinct. The " migraine " game. Mj was beside himself that they were in game 7 vs the pistons & pippen sits out for a migraine? OK yes I know migraines are horribly painful. But his was brought on by stress ergo no killer instinct. His selfishness I've mentioned above. On top of which quite a few players back in the day said pippen was not worth the hype both Barkley & Larry Johnson each said pippens best play was passing to no. 23. I used to think they were crazy until I really researched pippen. Individually during pippens playing prime years their were at least 15 small fwds better head to head. I think a semi recent show where Isiah Thomas talked about the omission from the dream team said it all " if magic & bird & Jordan don't want me alright but scottie pippen ??? Scottie pippen ?!? Man go to the park . " Lol. Basically the 3 greats he can live with but pippen is no where near zekes or the other 3 to say a word. U could have put any above average player next to mj & he was winning. The guy made it to the playoffs in only his 2nd year & dropped 69 on the mighty Celtics & the bulls had nobody. So put any good player in the backcourt & mj was winning a title. Btw w/ pippen it took mj 8 years to win a title. Plus pippen is an ungrateful snake. To sell a book he trashes mj. W/o mj scottie never would have made that ridiculous contract in a sign & trade to Houston.
In fact over both their NBA careers pippen wound up making more than mj. How sad this man whined about being in mjs shadow yet when he writes his book about his life the whole thing is about mj & its selling point is mj. I think that says it all about how " great " pippen was. Him on the dream team over Isiah Thomas is a travesty. Isiah has every box checked in his career except dream team. When the college players were sent Isiah was selected in college but that year for world serious reasons the US did not participate. So many of the dream team members did play for the US & win an Olympic medal. I believe Isiah was on dream team 2 way past his prime & nobody cared about dream team 2. Theirs only only dream team esp being that it had bird & magic on it thr 2 guys thst saved the almost bankrupt NBA & mj who built on that & took the NBA into the stratosphere. Sad b/c Isiah didn't shake mjs & the bulls hands he was penalized for life. So who was pippen to trash Isiah Thomas. A man who scored 25 pts on a sprained ankle in the 88 finals.

Yeah ownership did him a huge disservice during a time where the salary cap was at an all-time low which allowed ownership to penny pinch with players they deemed “not worthy” or “not valuable”.
However Scottie was also a shitty teammate and person during this time to the point where he blame deflected so much in situations where h made a toxic situation even worse. We can honestly say both parties were horrific in a very toxic relationship

This is such an excellent point. this really is one of the rare occasions where BOTH sides were really at fault. Management really penny pinched with Scottie (and good lord, he signed that extension at a horrible time...as you pointed out, when the salar cap was at an all-time low, and well before the lockout in 1999, when the rookie wage scale was renegotiated), and Pip also signed that awful deal when everyone told him not to. He then compounded that by being a terrible teammate as you pointed out, and then the Bulls continually dangled his name in trade rumors. Seriously, this was just SUCH a great beef!
