I found myself comparing this live version to the studio version of Grace Slick, and realized that wasn't fair, so I found a live version. Grace Slick finishes second. She sings it faster, but doesn't have the range of the singer in this video.
@@gregraleigh5946 one must take into account the quality of the recording equipment between the era’s. She can sing but on the same level as Grace probably not.
Covering a song like this is so brave and everyone has their opinions subjective to their own biases…That being said I truly enjoyed the liberties taken with the vocal presentation. Beautiful voice and such killer vibrato.
As a die-hard Jefferson Airplane fan, I’ll say that Rachel Price and these musicians did a terrific job . The high intensity isn’t easy to bring if you don’t have the voice to back it up, but these folks were great. I grew up in Southern California as a teenager in the’60’s and was privileged to be able to get to see a huge number of bands (we didn’t think about it being history, it’s just what we did at the time). The Airplane was / is my favorite. Always.
Bravo.. You did a great job on this iconic song. You shouldn’t be compared to Grace Slick, nor should she be compared to you. Two different voices, both terrific in their own right. Kudos to you for taking on such a task!
Grace sang it with a noticeable, ever increasing urgency that climaxed into desperation, at the same time time mixing that with what appeared to be unlimited horsepower in her vocal delivery....very hard to duplicate that..
OMG! Rachael nailed this. I don't care what's in the comments, Rachael's voice is every bit as strong Grace's. Powerful. Never heard of her before but I'm going to find out who she is.
When I saw this in the musicians birthday vid, my first thought while I had goosebumps all over my body was that it should be its own separate video, so I’m very happy to see this. Rachael’s voice is one of a kind! 🌟
Just came across this and was floored by the performance. Not many singers take this song on and Rachael Price put a wonderful spin on the song which I will enjoy many times. As with most classic pieces of vocals, no one seems to do it better than the singer who made it happen and Slick has a well deserved unique place, but it's nice to have a second take on a song I grew up with. Well done.
True. There will never be a voice like hers on that record again. Nobody will sing it like her and anything else seems not good enough. I can listen to all kinds of covers of many songs and easily forgive any deviation but for some reason with this song it doesnt work. Its chiseled in my brain and eardrums.
Grace recorded the original vocal track without music in a sound booth. The instrument track was added later. There is a UA-cam recording of this session. Slick's personna and voice can and will never be matched. . .off with their heads. 👑♥️
My very conservative (at the time) father bought this album for me at 9, when he went to St Louis, MO on his his big business trip. It took several years for the the words to make sense. It's safe to say that the message eluded my father always but the bigger message made it's way for him. He's still my number one hero.
Thanks so much for watching clips of Live From Here, if you enjoy this checkout Chris Thile and Punch Brothers new musical variety show, The Energy Curfew Music Hour. Season one is streaming here: bit.ly/ecmh-season1
I was lucky to have seen her sing this on Live From Here with Chris Thile live from St. Paul. The theatre was electrified. Heard her and Madison Cunningham on those shows a few times and have adored each since. That show featured so many other great artists I was fortunate to see as well; John Baptiste, Emily King, the Avett Bros, Andrew Bird, Marcus Mumford, Chris Stapleton, Dr. Dog and Paul Simon. I miss that program and the live music so much.
What a voice, what a charismatic performer. She dominates the stage and I didn't even know of the existence of Rachel Price and Lake Street Dive until several months ago when I discovered them on UA-cam, what a shame this group is not on a BIG stage.
I really enjoy that Rachael Price and Haley Reinhart are drawing inspiration from a similar well of classic pop/rock and jazz. Excellent performers of the same generation (Rachael is 5 years older) with tremendous respect for their musical forebears, but completely different styles!
OMG! I first heard the Grace Slick version 50ish years ago. Then a few years ago I heard Grace Potter nail it, and now this. Wonderful. Thank you Rachel and Chris for bringing this to us.
I saw Grace Potter cover this at a festival in the mountains of WV many years ago. She was the best to cover thus far. I love Rachel's effort on this one. She's got the gold on many other covers.
Ms.Price your great diction gave that song a little different edge, and it was Excellent! So hard to take a song from an old great singer and redo it well, but you did! Please keep singing!
Wow... this is RACHEL... so glad she does not try to „copy-paste“ Grace... Grace was unbelievable in her time... Rachel is in hers... Love not only this woman but the whole band....
Classy version of a song about drugs...Beautiful voice...I imagine Rachael isn't into taking psychedelic drugs, so her heart wasn't in it... but she did a great job. Classless move by the guy who stood next to her before she finished the song.
@@chrisbarnstable945 it's the first line of the song..one pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small. What do you think Grace was referring to?
@@thesnowdogs Well it's about illegal drugs in general. Some (weed & mushrooms) make you larger, help you grow. Others (meth & opioids) make you small, stunt yer growth. While the ones that Mother gives you (prescription) don't do anything at all. Go ask Alice...
Both singers are amazing. The amount of control she had on the vibrato is beautuful. grace slicks felt more natural and heartfelt honestly, but this is gr8
incredible crescendo. perfect slow ride up the mountain and ultimate explosive climax. don't want to compare it to the legend of Grace Slick. But, Rachael stands on her own and her version has her own greatness infused in it. It leaves you wanting for nothinng. Grace's is riveting and piercing. Rachael's is riveting but not as piercing, slightly softer, creamier and melodic. Grace already gave us the message loud and clear. Rachael softened the blow, just a tad. I could listen to both of them again and again.
What a voice! There's no autotune or anything here. It's just so real, like in the old days.
She is def not using autotune, becuase autotune cannot deal with all the vibrato in her voice. She is a great singer.
Rachel can do justice for any song she sings. Cant get enough of her!
Me too!
She's a miracle. Dang I miss Live from Here.
Meaning Please Babe?
Really great rendition, but it also makes you appreciate just how amazing Grace was.
Amazing Grace (Slick)

Rachel informs us exactly what the words to the song actually were. And gives you goosebumps to boot. 😅
Yup, she's no Grace Slick but she is Rachel Price. Both phenomenal in their own rights
Good call DeLia. Rachel is no Grace just as Grace is no Rachel.

Exactly - well said. Having said that, this singer does a fabulous job.
Extremely well put! Grace Slick is a rock & roll legend for a reason and nothing showcases why better than her vocals on White Rabbit..
