"You're not going to be BFFS w/everyone." Such an important point! I used to feel something was wrong if I wasn't connecting with someone. Now I just accept it and really cherish those friendships where the connection actually is real. Where there's a pulse. Makes me feel more alive.

In 2020, I dropped a toxic friend, lost a few old friends but kept the loyal ones. This year, I'm focusing on two friendships, one virtual, one physical. Wish me luck!

My Dad passed away 3 years ago and this is how we used to talk on the phone, kisses goodbye included. Im living away from my family in a different country and call likes these are so precious. Asian dad's that aren't afraid to be gentle and express themselves are so rare to find and watching this reminded me how grateful I am to have had a dad so wonderful. I don't comment on UA-cam videos ever but I wanted you to know that this really touched me. Lots of love and light to you Rowena, please always be your beautiful self

omg I so relate with being able to spend weeks alone as an introvert and how meeting up with friends and sharing personal goals and secrets can really make you feel so full. but I also feel when I've had too much of it back to back, I tend to get back into my shell for another 2 weeks at the least.

Omg yes!! What you said after the 1 on 1 dinner! I can totally relate. I then always ask myself why I don't do this more often bc I feel so good and my heart is so full after spending time with 1 or 2 friends. I mean we're all busy all of the time but still....

We've been watching movies together with chat in another 'channel' - via Slack, Discord, etc. so it's a lot like being together, laughing at the same lines and funny bits, critiquing outfits, etc.

Hello human beans! Just a reminder that YOU are beautiful, and that it is important to stay close to the people who make you feel happy and who make you feel better about yourself. Also, It's okay if it takes you a little longer to "un-potato" yourself. It is a process. Have an amazing rest of your day! I love youuuu

Ive seen these types of comments several times on this video. May I ask the reason why asian dads do not say “i love you?” Ive seeb plenty of young asian dads who are very into their child and although i may not understand the language but the way the dad(s) ive seen care about their child looks like they show physical love? And if it were to be seen as non masculine does this also mean they would normally not say it to their wife either? Really curious and no judgement at all :)

Since I started my own self-care/mental health journey my relationship with me parents has improved so much! Your conversation with your dad reminded me so much of the wisdom my own dad and mom share with me that I never experienced before just because I wasn't open enough myself to start those kinds of conversations with them. Your videos have been golden sunshine since I found them a few months ago. You're doing amazing!44

I unintentionally started this week's challenge by having an open and vulnerable conversation with my friend about friendships and my insecurities in friendships. Your video has opened me up to truly thinking about my actions as social wellness so thank you so much!
Sidenote: I'm practicing listening to Chinese and listening to your conversation with your dad really helps me test myself on how much I can follow along with true conversational Chinese. It's a bit difficult to read the subs and also listen but the subs helped a lot because there are some words I couldn't catch or aren't familiar with.

Oh Rowena, I've enjoyed this series so much. I enjoyed this video too & I've been participating on Vibely.. But this video was honestly the most difficult for me.. I just don't have that many friends. It's gotten so much harder in adulthood & I find it really difficult to cultivate new friendships even though I *really* want to. When I was writing out my list of people that I spend time with.. it was just my family, work "friends" and my boyfriend. Especially now that there is social distancing - I have no idea where to even start. Even when I make attempts with friends from my past (I wrote a few xmas cards & sent them out because everyone lives kinda far away - I moved a lot in my youth) conversations just fizzle out & we both get busy with our every day lives. I feel like you were mostly talking about improving the friendships & relationships that we already have, as opposed to creating new ones.. I would really appreciate a video on how to make friends as an adult 🙏🏼💕

You are right, when two people can be open and vulnerable with each other that’s real friendship. However, there are people who might use these deep convos to put the other person down or even twist the truth in later time. This breaks the trust. Building new friendships can be difficult and scary after going through this.

omg your talk with your dad was so wholesome
AND I really needed his words. Especially regarding when it's time to part ways. I unfortunately had to block one of my childhood friends because I think we were forcing ourselves to stay connected longer than we really should have ultimately and things just kind of... boiled over... and we were in this toxic cycle where she would block me and unblock me regularly when I said something she didn't like or agree with and ignored me most of the time when I wasn't blocked and I just finally ended it and blocked her for good on every single form of communication we shared. Then I more gracefully let go of some other people because I just felt like cleaning things up that night. As someone who never cuts anyone off and will stay friends with someone her entire life if they'll let her I guess I needed to hear the proper way to just let things end naturally. Thank you for sharing :)
Some of my closest friends and I live all around the world and we have an anime watch party together most weeks! It's so fun to watch with them. Watch parties are amazing.

I don't know if you want people to open up to you ofc, but what could help to start a deeper connection is paying close attention to your friends to see how they're doing and asking about their day or if they just wanna talk, or if you know what stuff they're going trough ask how that's going or if they're holding on. You showing that you care and see them makes them feel loved and comfortable and they'll probably go to you sooner if they wanna talk to someone :))

The conversation with your dad!! I am currently in that awkward stage with a person; someone who based on our very minuscule interaction-I would like to be friends with. This is a very unusual thing for me because any form f r/ships are the one thing I know that I am very inept at, and wanting to develop a friendship with someone from a work setting is even stranger.
I have spent so much time thinking of ways not to f*** it up- 'am I saying the right things?" "how do I establish a balance; and not be excessive/standoffish?". Do I just ask this person if they would like to be actual friends, as opposed to one with whom I banter (or very nearly flirt with-I didn't even realize that I could do this)? Ughh

I would suggest looking into (social) anxiety. I was struggling with similar issues - at one point I couldn't even raise my hand in class anymore without having a panic attack - and knowing what it actually is helped me deal with it a lot. There are many tips, strategies, tools to ease the anxiousness and become more comfortable. Takes time, but you can do it! Most people don't really judge you or think about your awkwardness as much as you think they do :)
