summary: 1. its okay not to do the most important/ biggest task first thing in the morning as this can create stress/ anxiety when you know you still have lots of little tasks to do, whereas doing all of your little tasks first allows you to focus on doing deep work later in the day with no distractions ʕ ᵔᴥᵔ ʔ ✓ 2. apple watch/ habit trackers - are you doing things because you actually want to or just to check it off your habit tracker? 3. time blocking & task batching - it can be helpful to see a full overview of your day/ week, however this can actually cause more stress long term if you don't stick to schedule. Consider setting up making and manager days where one day is dedicated to doing deep work e.g. planning and filming videos and another day is dedicated to meetings and managing interpersonal relationships. Work with what's best for your energy levels ~(๑˘︶˘๑)~ 4. accountability partners & mentors - mentors don't necessarily have to be someone you know in real life, they could be authors or UA-cam big sisters, meanwhile accountability partners can help keep you motivated to be consistent with achieving goals, especially during these unprecedented times. Its also a good way to keep in touch with friends (♡ ^ ◡ ^) 5. morning routines - you don't have to do all of your good habits in the morning, work with what's best for you and your schedule ♡ consistency is better than doing nothing!
"I began doing things because I wanted to check it off more than actually being present." SOOOO TRUE. I still track my habits but instead of putting all specific habits on the list, I put categories (inspired by Amy Landino's Movement-Mindfulness-Mastery). So if I decided to meditate on a given day, I can easily check off mindfulness. But if tomorrow I decided to journal for 30 mins, I can also tick mindfulness off. So it allows me freedom while still moving within a framework and making sure I'm still doing things that nourish my well-being. ❤️
I just realized that I started doing this too, I crave structure, but I also find it smothering. So I changed my rigid workout routine to "move around a nonzero amount" haha.
You mentioned a few times in your video how you felt like it was hard to manage friendships or that you found it difficult to catch up with friends. I would love a video on something to do with maintaining friendships in a healthy way for not only yourself but also your friends. Like maybe discussing communication/communication styles, activities, timing etc. I would be so interested to hear about this and work on this part of my life.
Love the conversation about morning routines. I don't have one because I start my job at 7am so need to leave home by 6.15am. I'd rather get good sleep than wake up early to write morning pages.
Morning routines have become so overcomplicated by being *aesthetic*. It's really just what you do in the morning. For me, that's make my bed, drink a glass of water, eat breakfast and make a matcha latte aha. Focussing too much on planning or diary just clogs up my day.
I also get to work for 7 and gotta get my daughter pre-prepped for school. I work with GSK And love my job cause it's low stress for me BUT I can't do big tasks before work in the morning.
Also one lesson from this video that I learned: Just because the habit's "trendy" does not mean it's gonna work for you. You have to figure out the habits that really spark joy and make you productive.
‘What get measured gets managed”-Peter Reflecting what you have done the previous month makes you happy and feel like you have made so much progress. STAY HAPPY and HEALTHY
"my mentors don't know I exist" the irony! lol you are the youtuber I turn to when I feel overwhelmed. thank you so much for existing. I hope it's a satisfying feeling, being able to be someone else's inspiration. I'm really glad I found your channel. ♡
I loved the format of this. How one of you doesn't like something, and the other does. And you can go through and explain why it's not for you personally, not just that it doesn't work. Thanks.
Haven’t finished the video yet, but I can already tell it’s interesting and informative :)! I think it’s helpful to realize that different things work for different people, and I like how this video helps emphasize that idea.
I really resonate with you on the time blocking, and especially after watching your video on how to manage your energy levels instead of time, it's really helped to ease my stress and anxiety!! (considering how much of a planner I am hahaa) love your videos rowena 💕
When I watch your videos, I instantly feel better. It doesn't matter what happened in my day, week or a month, it doesn't matter how pissed I am at the world for being the way it is, you always succeed to calm and ground me to earth. You make me think that i can change to be the way I want to be and to do what I want to do. Thank you for your hard work Rowena, all the best to you and your boyfriend!!
Such a great conversation! #1 resonated with me the most. As someone with multiple chronic illnesses, if I don't get certain things done in the morning, I'll be out of spoons by the end of the day to get to them. So I always save my first deep work session for after those tasks.
It is just so goo to have your experiences and pieces of advice now in a world where most of the time you feel guilty about not having everything done or not achieving as much as you are "supose to" I've personally try some of the habits you mentioned and finished not be consistent with them, as Rowena says it is vital for you to realize why you want things to be done instead of just checking items Love you so much, girls
Love the sweater! also love how you emphasized that you don't have a morning routine! I don't get why it's such a trend because I feel like it can vary depending on our priorities and just wanting to enjoy the morning.
Love this!! 😊 I relate so much to ALL! I can’t time block. I love doing it the night before but when I can’t accomplish my unrealistic to-do list, anxiety takes over so I might just do a rough sketch of what I need to do for the day without a time limit. Also, all my mentors are books, podcasts, and vlogs 😅 but I consider my accountability partners/friends my mentors too in a sense that they remind me who I am and where I want to be. Thank you for saying that that’s okay 🤗
Rowena thanks for such a collaboration I loved it even you replied live comments thanks for the tips you gave me personally cause I really needed those for my stressful 9th grader life first week
I block my day in chunks so I get notifications to work on certain stuff without the need to look at my journal every time. So basically a big chunk “MORNING routine” and then on my head and my journal I have the details of what I chose to do around these hours for my morning routine. Then big chunk of “shooting a video” and I have the details of which videos I have to shoot. Things like that. But “bathroom break” “lunch break” and other specific notifications and blocks on calendar make my anxiety go through the roof. Might not work for everybody, but it helped me still getting reminders but not to be too controlled of these things bc there are things we cannot control anyway.
I love this!! This made me realize that I need to figure out habits that no longer serve me and continue the ones that have helped me to stay productive. Love you always, Ro!
I'm so shy, I'll purposefully not want to social with others because of my anxiety and scared of letting people in. I like the idea of a accountability buddy but I'm so terrified social interactions. With that I really appreciate people like Rowena and Beatrice who I can listen too and learn new things. I do like to interact and meet new people but I struggle with how to keep that friendship going. (Or maybe it's just me, idk 😞)
Huhuh i love your sweaters!!! This is a nice idea and really helpful to someone who also wants to make list but does not want to be that much pressured with it! :)
I love to smash everything, on my to-do list, in the morning! I’m an early bird 🐦! Usually in the PM I am exhausted, so I really can’t get anything done by then😴
love your videos so much Rowena! this video was particularly insightful and the section about apple watch and habit tracking really resonated with me! otherwise, i found myself really agreeing with a lot of the suggestions and habits - as a new content creator, the discussion about task batching/scheduling will also be great to keep in mind :)
Productivity tips and tricks really help the most when they are novel. I have to mix it up. I'll use timeblocking for a couple weeks and then it stops working, so I switch to something else, then something else, and so on.
Aww Rowena, you've gotta prioritize seeing your friends a bit more! What is life without other people? Although I am an extrovert, so maybe I have a different perspective about it.
As a student, I feel like trackers are absolutely essential for productivity because it's easy to just focus on the one thing u like and are good at, while ignoring everything else. BUT, they give me so so sooooo much anxiety because even if I get the tasks done and check em off , I always feel like I'm lying to myself and that I did the task to just "check it off" and I always end up feeling crappy and unproductive, even when things on my todo list are technically done. I dont even know what to do at this point 😕
7:53 really opened my eyes Having a time Blocked calendar gives me anxiety and I tend to not do it. This way of showing routine made it harder to stick with. I'll be trying your way and say what I feel about it . Thanks =)
If I were functional I would be so related to Rowena. I just reviewed ~~myself~~ and saw how I'm not a mourning person, so it's ok going to bed at midnight, waking up at 8:30 and working at 9 if I can be more productive from 18:30 - 00. I think it's cultural, but being social is my main problem. I'm not, people I know are, so it's so difficult to keep myself on my own stuff. Surely I'll try real new ways of dealing with my productivity this weekend. Thanks for the video
Hi Rowena, could you do a video about career? I’m in a midst of thinking which career fits me or I fit into that certain career... stress girl over here 🥺🥺
This is such a fun idea!! 😍😍💗💗 Definetly going to go check out your friend 🥰🙏🙏 I agree that all these things are things that have had a place in my life at one point but not really anymore. The only thing I still kinda do is time blocking :) but that's just for work and not so much my personal time! 🙏🙏
that was cute about mentors because ro, you are one of the coolest people i consider my mentors and you do not know me... unless you read this comment, then you technically know i exist so hi!!! if you do 😂💛
Such as you, I also don't like the idea of doing the most important thing in the morning. If by important we mean time-sensitive then I can understand but often "important" means the one which involves more hard-work or brain work, so it probably won't be very quick and I like to save it for when I have gained some momentum. I found the sweater it’s from Saks it’s $350 shocking
