    Hi, thank you for sharing your perspective. There are a lot of important topics that are timely to address. While there won’t be one blanket rule that works for every one / every family, and we’ll never fully know someone’s context and circumstance, we can find measures and best practices that better safeguard children’s well-being. Looking forward to continuing the convo. 💜

      @Noelle Alexandria NoelleXandria on Insta-Onlyfans that’s a very good point I’ve never thought about it that way. We tend not to think about it this way when we’re looking at people who we deem good parents (not these major family channels like Ace family or Labrant) who are just sharing their cute kids activities like on tik tok. The vids are cute, the kids look well taken care of and it can bring a smile to our faces but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s their 2 year old kid on the internet forever and a 2 year old can’t consent.

      And, when the children are older, they realize what’s actually happening. You can actually see that older children (usually 10-12) become uncomfortable with talking to the camera, or they try to stay away from it as much as possible. Family channels are so chilling to me because of that.

      Right could you imagine how much this could effect these children mentally: breeding no sense of reality, entitlement, narcissism, low self esteem, warped self worth, etc. There are so many mentally challenging situations that can arise from growing up behind a camera. UA-cam should really be ashamed of themselves perpetuating a whole new level of child stardom that can seriously destroy children and families. I know that they can’t control everything people post but they really need to step in and monitor the new situations of child exploitation that is arising from their platform. The ace family is the scariest example of what we all see as a ticking time bomb. Although I do believe parents should have the power in raising their own children using their children as their main source of income is not right. Parents should be parents not literal slave drivers and I think their should be some sort of foundation that youtube sets up to be an out for these kids... they should have lawyers ready to fight for these kids if things ever get hairy, which I’m sure we all know they will.

    • @frumtheground
      @frumtheground 3 роки тому +63

      Isn't that just the most garbage thing, too? It's pretty much a human version of the wire mother vs the cloth mother experiment. Yeah, it's great to have food and a roof and whatnot. But want to be treated with any humanity or start to fight back against the manipulation and abuse then suddenly you're an ungrateful brat and everyone on the outside will agree because it looks like you're being taken care of. Who cares if the kids benefit financially, or materialistically? None of that matters when their parents expose them to dangerous situations or treat them as less than human. Exploitation is exploitation, and it's not ok in any case, especially from.oarents to their children.

It’s creepy that parents profit so much off their children but also UA-cam & other social media platforms profit so much off of their child employees.

      I wish I could say there wasn't a history of gross abuse against children in Christianity, but unfortunately, I cannot. I can say that in any place where children are vulnerable to adults, there will be those looking to exploit them. A loving, trusting community of believers in the same protecting God is the perfect place for a sicko to prey on children who are thought to be safe in the church, which is considered family to most. But this attracts those who wish to take advantage of these perhaps willfully ignorant parents who leave their children with virtual strangers, believing the Church is a safe place and all in its walls are trustworthy, as Christians of the same faith. When I was around 4-5 I was almost abducted by such a sicko. I noticed a man following me and I started running and he started following me faster, so I panicked and ran for my life through the church and to where I knew my parents would be after the service. I pointed to the man as soon as I got to my dad but he saw us. He ran and other members chased him to try to stop him but he got in his car and ran as quick as he could, too quick for anyone to get a plate number. This was the 90's, so no video cameras, this wasn't the kind of church to put security cameras outside (we did in inner-city churches tho).
      So I agree 100%! It makes good-hearted, normal Christians look bad, which is the majority, I believe. I am not a Christian but I was raised that way. Although I dislike and downright hate aspects of the various churches and Christians I was exposed to for 18 years, I met many who were truly just doing right by their souls and by the world. Kindness and generosity were the kind of Christians I mostly met, but the negative tends to outweigh the positive when kids are getting hurt. The fact remains that a lot of sects of Christianity believe in a physical or emotional "discipline" that is outright abuse. There was even a man who wrote a book on how to abuse your child to make them "a god-fearing Christian" and it was on Amazon for five years. They had ten foster and adopted kids, and when someone on Tumblr finally found this book by sheer chance, they instantly put up a petition, raised awareness, and this man and his wife were arrested and the children saved. Not to mention the book was taken off of Amazon. It was a huge thing in the early 2010s (can't remember, I'm old).
      I have no defense of these "faith-based" bloggers... what does that even mean? Faith-based... What faith? It's so egotistical to imply that your faith as a white, middle-class, Christian in a specific church/sect of Christianity is the only faith, and to then go hurt children? I guess the Bible does have plenty of examples of child abuse, and of course, "Honor thy Father and Mother", which many take to mean, "my child must worship me and do everything I say or they are going to hell". I hope these kids get out and are happy and safe someday.

    If any of you have watched wife swap, then you know it’s about families with different lifestyles/beliefs that exchange moms for a few days and learn about each other and themselves. One time they had a family who were family vloggers and the “new mom” made them have no internet for a week or however long it is. At the end, one of the girls who was about 10 years old said to her “I’m not ready for you to leave. I feel better not being on camera. I feel more confident.” It broke my heart because I don’t know if those parents stopped. And she wasn’t a three year old who likes anyone who gives her a cookie, she is a fully conscious person with her own opinions and ideas.

    I’m kind of at a breaking point. I really don’t believe people should be posting their underage kids. Mostly because they arent able to consent in a way that helps them understand the full scope of the consequences of being on the internet. They aren’t cognitively developed enough and rely on their parents to make the beat decisions for their health and safety. Thanks for bringing attention to this topic!

    • @jasminelambert3753
      @jasminelambert3753 3 роки тому +51

      I absolutely agree. Like even with normal people. I understand that parents want to show their kids off, but I think there needs to be some kind of limit. Parents should not be able to post every second of their kids’ lives online for anyone to see. I’m embarrassed enough when my dad posts a throw back picture of me on Facebook from when I was a little kid and those are all digitized versions of actual physical pictures because social media wasn’t a thing when I was little. I cannot fathom how these kids are going to feel when they grow up and realize their parents have plastered their entire childhoods onto the internet for anyone to see.

    • @Author.Noelle.Alexandria
      @Author.Noelle.Alexandria 3 роки тому +28

      It depends on how kids are posted and why. Children can’t consent to vaccines, yet I’m sure you favor making kids get them. There’s a lot kids can’t consent to, and as long as it’s not actively harmful, then it’s up for their adults to decide for them, and no, the internet isn’t inherently harmful. But there’s a difference between posting pics from a family vacation on your Instagram and the kids are in a few pics versus actively broadcasting their lives to make money. As far as understanding the full scope, most young adults don’t understand the full scope either. Just turning 18 and no longer being a minor doesn’t impart you with the wisdom of years of adult experience and a brain that’s finished developing yet absolutely every young person whose brains are still developing think they’re the exception, the mature one, the smart one, which, ironically, is a sign of continued immaturity. You don’t know enough yet to know how much you don’t know.

Directors and stage managers are focused on rehearsal and the artistic process and making sure everything goes smoothly, so this woman (I don't remember her exact job title) can remind them of how much time the child actor has left in rehearsal, enforcing the laws if the creative team wants just a little bit longer, make sure the costume fittings respect his privacy, just be someone who the child can talk to if anything makes them uncomfortable or if they need anything
      People early in their entertainment career (myself included) want to be well-liked, want to have a good reputation so we can continue getting hired in an industry that is more competitive and more reliant on networking than most. Add to that the naivety of childhood, the lack of life experience that helps older people recognize when someone is mistreating them, then you have child actors in a very vulnerable position, regardless of anyone else's good intentions.

      Right and I don’t like the precedent it sets for regular families. Seeing as how UA-cam is so accessible to the every day person, anybody with a camera can just record their kid then take it out on them for not hitting it big. All these non-influencer families could pressure their kids even worse because they want a viral hit. “Why don’t you act cute like the ACE family kids” I mean imagine.

Who can confirm that these parents aren't putting the money first and their kids second?

    One of the saddest things is that psychologists, particularly child psychologists are already trying to warn the parents. One said it isn't even like living in a glass house, where people can drive by and look, because it's constant, everything is seen.
    Also, so much of your consent point made me think of 8 Passengers. Those kids have SAID they want to stop, and she posts them saying it! They tell her they have no friends because of the channel, that they're picked on. And the mother just sits there!

      Him and Eve, the two youngest were pretty much raised in front of the camera and you can tell. Looking directly into the camera, knowing how to act when the older kids don't seem too happy to be filmed (just what Ive noticed from other videos on them)

Thankfully I was a toddler in the 90s so my parents weren't able to film what happened and post it online. I would be mortified if they had recorded and posted a video of the situation online. I'd probably sue my parents to oblivion if I grew up and saw that.
    I know it can be difficult for some people to empathize with others if the situation doesn't effect them directly, so I would encourage everyone to think about that one embarrassing story that your parents like to tell their friends about that makes you uncomfortable, and imagine that your parents filmed and posted that online for strangers to see. I think it is a fantastic idea to make this new series where you point out specific family channels and explain why they are problematic! For whatever reason, some people refuse to see how family channels exploit children and I think showing examples would help people understand.

    jamerrill stewert is the correct type of mommy vlogger. you rarely see her kids (the exception being her baby wearing and even then you mostly just see a hat), usually just walking through the frame, she mutes audio if they talk to her about personal things while filming, or rarely they ask to say something to the camera. Mostly hauls and freezer cooking.

      I dont mind the channels giving parenting advice like some give kids meal ideas, or some gave homeschooling advice during the pandemic, those sorts of videos a good and helpful without exploiting children.

    to me, the worst part about this family vlogger industry is how vulnerable the kids are made to be. as you said, parents are putting their kids’ real lives, genuine flaws, and authentic personalities out there to be judged and hated on. the hate messages these children get are deeply personal, unlike the hate child actors face. even on the flip side, when millions of people are idolizing and loving on a child for their charm or cute appearance, how are they equipped to handle that level of attention?

    My dad said that one time a lady in a mall heard my sister and me talking (we were very young) and she was surprised how well-spoken we were so she told my dad we should be in "show business" and she gave him her card. He said he tossed it immediately because it's been known for ages how Hollywood is terrible to children and any person with common sense knows it. It's awful.

    its interesting once you compare family channels/bloggers with "traditional" celebrities. the majority of celebrities refuse to post their children's faces even if they're just a couple months old (ex: gigi). they're hiding their face for a reason that influencers havent figured out yet. its also interesting seeing these children of celebrities become teenagers and pop up more because they're at the age where they're able to give consent or control their own social media

    something i would love for you to focus on in one of your future videos is disabled children specifically. they are the focus of a specific type of internet family channel/account where everything about them is branded as education for abled people. parents will film autistic meltdowns, discuss their child’s medical details, film abusive therapies, and other invasions of privacy under the guise of educating abled people to the “realities” of disability. they also often have an ableist lens of “look how awful it is to live with a disabled person sometimes”. i would love to see you dive into that, and can provide some suggestions if you like!!

    This is so great!!! I’d love for you to look into the Ingham Family. They really fly under the radar (despite multiple sexual allegations against the father). The decline in their kids wellbeing in the last few months is so noticeable and tragic. They’ve all been taken out of school and the older ones get largely ignored and neglected.

    I think it would be interesting to see this topic also applied to micro-influencers as well. I have seen a lot of people who push MLM products use their children as a selling point or people feeling the pressure to have more kids as a selling point or to become more “relatable”.
