What’s up guys. I am very excited about today’s video. We are going to be looking at the Spanish of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez . Today's video is not about politics. That is not what this channel is about. Today’s we are only going to judge AOC for her Spanish speaking abilities! Then we are going to look at her story as a Spanish speaker and stay until the end because we will see what her skills mean for Latinos in the US. So let’s dive right into it! We are going to look at an interview she did with Rene
    Reaction
This is my take on it so far.She clearly thinks and lives in English and has for a long time, but she is honestly perfectly able to communicate in Spanish no problem! She makes mistakes with gender mostly and finding the right word. But in her defense, I do think gender for noun in Spanish is kind of messed up.
Something else that is cool is that she sometimes has sort of a Puerto Rican accent… Sometimes… she drops the S at the end of words, but other times she doesn’t. Her accent is what I would call a US Latin accent. Let’s watch a bit more.
    Reaction
Alright so AOC Spanish in an objective scale of fluency, I would put it at a 7 . Like honestly I make mistakes like hers in English all the time. She struggled with por an para
So what does this mean for Latinos and even anybody struggling with Bilingualism when it is expected of you… who cares? You speak both languages, you are able to communicate. Perfection is not the most important thing. I value just having the courage to step up and speak.
And I mean despite popular belief not everybody who is Latino speaks and understands Spanish perfectly or at all. That doesn't make you less Latino.. I do speak it because I grew up in Colombia speaking only Spanish Hence my accent in English but I know so many people that grew up here just speaking Spanish with their parents, and English everywhere else. It is normal that they would struggle with it. There are only so many words you can learn from your mom.
    Stop music
    Diego limpie
    Ya voy
    Diego a comer
    Ya voy
    Diego a comer
So if you are an immigrant struggling with your first language think of AOC, Selena), Eva Longoria or think of me because even I struggle speaking spanish after speaking it my whole life and taking a year of college in Colombia, if i don’t use it I lose some of it.
After a long interview, with Univision in Spanish, AOC posted this tweet
Talking precisely about this point. So Latinos, don’t get discouraged and keep practising.
Now you may be wondering how come AOC speaks any Spanish. Her mom is from Puerto Rico and her dad is a Nuyorican, a Puertican from New York. So AOC herself is Nuyorican. She spend the first 5 years of her life in the Bronx, and then moved to a more suburban area where most people probably spoke English. Her parents made a huge effort to take her to a place with better schooling.. She split her time between the Bronx and the suburbs, and to this day her teachers who say she was just brilliant.
As you can see AOC grew up in a world surrounded by English even if at home they spoke spanish. She then achieved credentials in college in Boston University and went on to become an activist and politician. During her professional life, like many Hispanics, she was asked to use Spanish to translate or talk to Spanish speaking families. Today she is still very rooted in her Spanish speaking community. During the census, she engaged in conversations with multiple people in SPanish encouraging them to sing up. Even though English is her dominant language, she remains committed to connecting with the Spanish speakers in her district, which is really cool.
Well guys, let us know in the comments what you thought of AOC’s Spanish… I hope this encourages you to be courageous and patient with yourself as you learn Spanish… even if it is your first language

She definitely doesn’t sound like a native Spanish speaker and mixes up the gender and conjugation of words. She’s not fully bilingual but is pretty fluent in Spanish. I agree with your score..7/10 seems right to me

She is fluent, the problem is she is exposed to so much English, that is messes one up. I speak spanish, and it is broken, but I am fluent, the problem is I am exposed to Brazillians everyday that now when I speak spanish, sometimes the words come out in Portuguese. Give AOC one month in PR and she will re calibrate,

@@VoltronSupremeCrypto I get what you’re saying but I grew up in the US to Spanish speaking parents and I still speak, write and read Spanish fluently. I ‘ve spoken English at school my entire life and now for work. I think it just depends on the person and how much of a link they have with their native country/region. AOC grew up in the suburbs New York in a predominantly white American community, so it’s not surprising that she’s not fluent imo 🤷🏽‍♀️

@@Dreabz617 She is fluent just lacks practice, think of it as rust. I lived in PR and in Mexico, and at one time my Spanish was smooth, now bc I am exposed to Portuguese speakers on a daily basis, my spanish at times sounds odd, bc I end up mixing languages. Basically, it is just rust, gove me one month in a spanish speaking country and I will speak like any native, same with AOC. She has rust, from lack of use,

Not only that, they don't even really notice after a while if you are easily understandable. That goes more so for accents. When you talk to a native, usually they are just communicating with you, not judging or even really noticing what amount to your idiosyncracies.

On my mom's side - my grandparents were native speakers who immigrated to the US. My mom and siblings spoke Spanish at home and learned English at school. Aw, your comments hit home for me. I've lived in Texas all my life surrounded by Spanish speakers, absorbing the language unconsciously, but sadly was never taught it. It wasn't until I got to college that I made the decision to study Spanish in earnest, but the high expectations that my society has (perhaps a low expectation from my family, personally; a greater expectation from friends; and an even greater expectation from everyone else, strangely) almost always hinders my confidence. (In my experience, I am an adult with an elementary level knowledge of the language.) But your'e absolutely right. We should think about people like AOC, Selena, you etc. And to further reiterate ... WHO CARES! Great videos.

My son is more fluent than I am because when I went back to Puert Rico for my master's in ESL he was 5. I was nervous about putting in a school where he knew no Spanish and the teachers didn't know any English. Surprisingly, he picked it so fast that the teachers assured me that language was never an issue. He finished second grade before we moved back to the United States. Great topic! How about discussing the difference between Hispanic and Latin? I'm from the Philippines, and Filipinos have a huge Spanish and Mexican influences. Our culture and traditions has been heavily influenced because of the colonization (333 years). During the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines, Spanish was the lingua franca, until the Americans came in the late 1800 and slowly changed everything. (The Philippine gain independence from Spain in 1898). Although the Philippines is still slowly drifting away from Spain and its influences, can you consider Filipinos Hispanic?

for me at this level of intellectual dialogue, having in mind her institutional political position (una funcionaria federal) and considering her level of instruction, her dominion of Spanish is unsatisfactory, she should be a real bilingual pro! As Latino I attended high school in Massachusetts and have a good impression of schooling down there, although I think my former South American school was better in some ways ("universal" rather than "parochial" perspective and scope) than what I found at this rather rich school district (in a poor NY city neighbourhood this "isolationism" must be much worse.) Now, after my European experience this North- and South American monolingualism sounds weird, since everyone I meet here is at least bilingual and many are trilingual and more (now I speak 6 languages). I do understand the problem of the Spanish language in the US, but if we really want to solve it and promote real bilingualism (always an asset never a liability!!) it is very important that key figures make the first step and be the reference... asi que querida AOC (I love her) creo que seria bueno que se preocupara de mejorar sus spanish skills, usted es un lider y un referente aspiracional!

In my view, she is fluent up to 90%, she just needs to work on the Spanish gender and articles, and have a better choice of words in accordance with her stature as a Congresswoman. However, that is not needed to have a casual conversation with that half-witted singer, Residente, who barely speaks Spanish correctly, and who trashes it in his garbage music.

I watch the news on Telemindo to help me with my Spanish studies. I saw AOC interviewed last year and was not impressed - which is why I watched this video. One would think her discussion of this topic - one of her "bread and butter" issues - would be more polished. Doesn't she discuss it all of the time with her constituents and give speeches and interviews about healthcare? It's not like the journalist was asking her about an obscure topic like arms control or medieval architecture.

This may be off topic, but me being a hispanic American, am I the only one that gets annoyed when people (mainly white people) speak to someone in Spanish because of the way they look? My mom doesn't get it because she's from 🇩🇴 but me as an American, I personally feel a bit offended when that happens, even though it's never happened to me but I've seen it happen to other latinos, including friends. Do you think I or we don't speak English because of the way we look? Maybe other Hispanics don't get bothered by this, but don't practice Spanish with me because I'm not duolingo or Rosetta stone. And I can speak English so fuck off.

His grammar is good though, and if you knew Spanish you would hear that her grammar is horrible. Her accent is foreign but it's ok. Her grammar is fair at best. Normally foreign language ability is rated on a scale of 5, and she is a high 2 but definitely not a 3. So his assessment of 7 out of 10 was quite generous. Even 6 would be generous, 5 is reasonable since she would be a high 2.
