  • Moenjodaro is located in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province.
This archaeological site dates back to 2,500 BCE. It was discovered in 1922.
Officials say only 10 percent of the city has been unearthed so far but the remains tell the story of a bustling and civilised, planned-out city.

They are as old as & were contemporaries of the ancient Egyptian & Mesopotamian civilizations. Humanity learned to read these ancient Egyptian (Hieroglyphic) & Mesopotamian (Cuneiform) scripts many decades ago , but that of the Indus valley civilization & its people still remains a mystery!
But really the most sad thing is that people of both India and Pakistan probably know more about Egyptian or western Greek/Latin history or culture than the one buried right under their feet.

Well said Sir !! I have studied them not maybe as thoroughly as You have but I don't think the Indus or other subcontinental civilizations are at par with the Eqyptians or Mesopotamians. For example, in Moenjodaru one finds drainage system, sanitary, planned housing, tools and utensils and huge infrastructure, but not any scriptures like that of Egyptians. Secondly, look at the infrastructre, It evident that its not as solid as the that of Egypt's. Main reason could be the wealth the Egyptians had but the point remains. The Egyptians were much more advanced than subcontinental civilizations.

Do Pakistanis agree that their ancestors were not Islam but Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and they had rich civilisation and language? Imran Khan recently opened 1000 year old Hindu temple that was damaged by Muslim youth after Babri Masjid damage in India and 400 more Hindu temples are planned for opening and enlisting them in UNESCO heritage sites. We should respect our roots no matter what we are now. Indus valley civilization is the only one still not understood fully even its language. Talibans destroyed their ancient structures in Afghanistan so did ISIS in Syris and Iraq. Very sad. Even if those structures are not valuable for them as their religion is against idols or temples, they should preserve for science and history to know how people lived in past and learn new things.

@Mythical Toxic and the many minorities that Taliban and ISIS killed like the Yazidis. Kashmir has Sarada temple where Sankaracharya went which is just across the LOC in POK in bad state and so are many other temples and Imran Khan govt renovated and opened one big one. Civilisations change they way they worshipped the higher forces of nature before Abrahamic religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam came into existence in the present Palestine Israel areas. Even in South America Shamanism and animism id practised as a minority but that was the major one before Spanish conquered them and forced their religious belief and language just like ISIS and Taliban and other extremist groups force the minorities in some countries which all know. Yes, Buddhism spread from Bihar in India worlwide upto even Afghanistan which was under Ashoka rule and he let it spread to even Sri Lanka and near my hometown in south India. The same forces of nature were callef by different names in South America, Japan and ancient civilisations in India Pakistan Afghanistan etc and some modifications in the pictorial representations. What is Hinduism, a word coined by non Asians as depicting it as a religion which in fact was a way of life with flexibility and freedom to believe any ideology that is good for others and not harmful making it different from Abrahamic religions or the Zorastrianism in ancient Persia. Its more similar to Shamanism or animism that respect, worship animals, birds, trees which os quite common in Hindusim, which is conglomerate of the aspects of polytheism, shamanism and animism and has aspects of monotheism, atheism which is why its an open way of life taking good from nature and respecting. In the forest tribes across India there are animism worship even now and they dont particularly follow the religious Hindu rituals but their own traditions of the past but also mix with Hindu dieties. For eg they will not say their mountain god is Shiva but a different name representing their local culture, language but an aspect of Shiva connecting to Hinduism and no Hindu priest from city will go to them and say your god name is not in ancient books and is a false one because people are allowed to follow what they believe which is in contrast to the two major religions in the world where different sects in those religions dont accept others as their religion but only their belief or ideology is true. So Indus valley civilisation or the ancient India Pakistan Afghanistan before Christ were having different ways of life but some common features that allowed them to intermingle and there was no such thing as Hinduism then. As time progressed people adopt new gods of others along with their exisitng gods and continue rituals mixing both. This is one such way of Sufi Islam which has aspects of non Islam which allows music and dance that is haram in strict Islam but allows one to connect to higher consciousness in a different approach harmless to all.
There is a good book called Sapiens that writes well on world religions and recommended to read.

@Mythical Toxic "lighting incense sticks and candles at a shrine, a strong reminiscent of Buddhist rituals which can be specially observed in East Asia where this is very popular ritual in Buddhist temples, is found in Multani shrines as well"- Was incense sticks started from Buddhist rituals or before by another religion in the regions where Buddhism started?
"Hinduism really was not prevalent in pre-Islamic Pakistan" Please verify authentic international peer reviewed scientific literature and not some street sayer. This is not a battle to say who came first or who is great. It is merely stating factual reports and in many countries the govt doesn't teach the facts of their past that go in the line of their present ideology but facts and truth will stand the test of the time irrespective of the truth not been taught to the kids in Pakistan, Malaysia, USA, UK, Australia, Saudi Arabia of their past since the ancient times in their lands before the current popular beliefs and ideology came into existence.
"Gandhara (Peshawar) packed with Buddhist sites"- Gandhara appears in one of the most important texts or epics of ancient times predating Buddhism. I guess you are aware of that text as you self-proclaim to be an advanced historian.
"specially in Kashmir, where Hinduism never even came until the 1990's, when the Kerala Pandits wanted to 'enjoy the weather' of Kashmir, but they never went back. Before Islam came Kashmir was a mainly Buddhist and Pagan (Animist,Shanamist) area"- And again this is not a debate on whose side is Kashmir but factual check. There are ancient temples in Amarnath and many more such as Sarada temple that I said earlier which were before birth of Islam. There are temples dedicated to Mother Goddess too and Kashmir word is also in another important ancient text or epic predating Buddhism and I guess which is this other text as well. Sorry to say but to say Hinduism was never there until 1990s is just a blatant lie or a big plunder and one needs a big fact check. Please contact international historians for verification and not some street sayers who will give biased opinions. I fear you have been misled or fed with half baked information in your school or the curriculum was in that way to have a different version in head from young. Same I heard from a UK guy who said their school history never said about atrocities of the East India company or the Crown in Asia and Indian subcontinent before partition that led to millions of deaths.
This is not to say who is greater than whom or who is winning this or because one religion is in minority in region their bigger past should be nullified but just a fact check. The Egypt or Greek or Roman people accept their past civilizations though they are not following those beliefs and not modifying or nullifying.
I am a busy person in scientific research and no time for this long conversation. I need to review some scientific articles for international journals, write and submit my own articles. I dont belong to any religion but to science and humanity. I believe in fact checks and refer to authentic sources before publishing or finalising my review on others articles. Thank you for your opinions though as it gives an insight of how people in different places think or perceive nevertheless the truth will be laughing at those who think of it as otherwise. Ultimately in 250 million years all landmasses on earth will be joined just like how it was 250 million years ago and I wonder will there be any human to fight over religion and borders haha. In geological scale of time all landmasses came to present form yesterday and few seconds back humans came and few seconds later humans will be gone and in few fraction of seconds humans are doing all these things good or nonsense. One must wonder what is this life worth, is this all? There will be no south china sea and Australia will stick to eastern China and I wonder will China fight on border issues instead of south china sea then. Civilisations come and go, religions come and go, cities come and go, so will humans come and go and finally the universe too.

@Mythical Toxic Yes I also heard that all over India even in south Buddhist temples were destroyed or converted to Hindu temples, like the western invaders from Persia, Turkey, central asia did in medieval India to Hindu temples. History is also being rewritten as more research is being done. I never heard of Sankaracharya or Sarada temple and unlike you I will not jump the gun to say you are wrong but I will fact check with sources which ofcourse you have not given any references or sources. Mahabhasya, never heard of it. What I know is Sankaracharya monk had philosophical debates even with women scholars unlike in other religions where women were not allowed in such things. There was no violence by him as he was peaceful monk since age of 8. But I will research on him if he instigated, promoted violence on Buddhist monks. Yes, in history we always have kings of any religion plundering other religious sites, ofcourse not all kings including Islamic kings I mean. Buddhism only came around 500 BC and people had different beliefs before that be it any religious belief. There is no pressure to follow only one.
Satavahana king Satakarni from my place in south India was a Buddhist and there are many Buddhist caves for monks to live, meditate outside in my city which I visited recently. In the past all kings or all types of people were not tolerant on minorities in many parts of the world which includes all major religions but now in 21st century people got over those instincts and believe is openness and flexibility in life and allow all faiths to coexist and the govt not allow any racist, extremist groups to take over the minorities based on religion or colour as we see riots in USA now over the killing of a black man by a white policeman and it happened similarly in Palm island, Australia when govt finally gave many millions of dollars in compensation to the indigenous people. I met indigenous people and experienced their culture which is similar to animism and I felt similarities in some aspects in what I heard from Hinduism and other ancient religions or faiths in south america or asia where the trees, animals, water, sky, rain were respected and worshipped and their stories of skies, stars were interesting.

These are the remains of our Dravidian Ancestors, the habitants of Harrapa and Mohenjedaro. We Dravidians came from the Nubian Egyptians who were skilled in potttery and terra-cotta. History of Dravidians was wiped after a night drought hit Harrapa and then later accessions of Aryans who settees on the delta plains (present north India). To understand our ancestral history we must understand our riversystems. Indus Valley was named after the Indus River which is the amalgamation of the five rivers of India. Ganga, Jamuna, Saraswati, Parvati, Beas. Hinduism came with the Aryanix invasions who established the caste and ritual systems. They also added the existing gods of the natives to their profile and that is how Hinduism has so many gods and goddesses and that's why it's a system than a reliogion. Shiva, one important Gods to the Hindus was worshipped before the Aryanic wave. He was worshipped as the Phallus. Shaivism and Vaishnavism are the oldest religions of India much before the advent of the Hindu system. In the academic realm, in the universities of America. The academicians and historians are well aware of this fact and have enough evidence to support the aryanic invasions of Ancient India. Sanskrit, Latin and Greek have something in common. They form the basis of most languages used today. But the Dravidian languages like Tamil which predates Sanksrit to become the oldest language in the world. Please note the Dravidian language is not part of the Indo -European Language family. The Indo Euro language family as a vast folio. German and Hindi are from one family, and so are many other languages in the world which seem pretty different but are from the same family.

I don't understand when you say that the Buddhist Stupa was built 100 to 500 AD... This Harappan civilisation lasted only 1000 years so 4500 - 1000 = 3500 years, after that there were no people lived there, Buddha time is from 650 BC, which is almost 1000 years after \Harappa civilisation ended, meaning no one there to construct stupas...monks don't build stupas and when there are no population monks don't go and live in a ghost town with no water facilities. For your information, Buddhist stupas and statues were constructed all the way up to Persia, there were lots built/carved in now Afghanistan, so this Indus region was part of India, and no Buddha statues or stupas were ever been built in this part of India after the year 1BC.... because Buddhism vanished from India by 100AD, your journalists are stupid Al Jazeera... get some educated journalist, a cheap media company.

What about a big "NO". Its preservation is among the top priorities of the Sindh Govt and have been doing it perfectly. Every govt and I really mean it, appropriate a huge amount of money for it. So Please stop generalizing. And Dude Why dont come here sometime. Will show how cherished are Gurdwaras in here. Your opinion matters Bro. Sikhs in here are awesome people. Dint expect it coming from a Sikh. :'(

I can't think of a way to show my empathy Sashakta, We all condemn that horrendous act. They(taliban) were unique lunatics. None of us endorse the blowing up. BTW Budhist sites are in plenty in my region. And I assure You whats left of it (the rest taken by Brits to decorate their museums and some destroyed by Huns) can't be in a better condition. I have visited the Taxila monastries over years and all i can see is betterment.

Mohenjodharo means the door to death. These people are the Agonites mentioned in the thourath who worshipped fire and indulged in human sacrifice especially child sacrifice. This they thought gave them power or shakthi. They were invaded by the Isrealies lead by samuel or shamool (Alaihiwassalaam).
