Its one of the most common questions we get; Why does my navara blow black smoke?
The primary reason for this is that they are very close to the AFR limit of what will blow smoke from the factory, whereas other manufacturers are not. So basically, things don’t have to start going wrong by a lot before it’s a visible issue.
So what can be contributing issues? Lets have a look
What makes my Navara blow black smoke
EGR faults.
Probably the most common is the issue where the butterfly fails in the EGR valve. Basically these use a plastic gear set that links the electric motor and the valve itself. They usually don’t throw a fault code as electrically, everything is fine.
Injectors:
These injectors flow the most out of any ute in Australia. Nissan engineers decided that higher flow rates and shorter durations were the way to go. It also means however that if something starts to go wrong, it goes really wrong as the higher flow rate exacerbates any errors.

SCV faults.
Linked to the injectors above and definitely more common than injectors is the SCV worn out. The SCV basically is the throttle of the fuel pump and therefore any errors in rail pressure result in flow rate errors through the injectors.
A common symptom of failing SCV is stalling on occasion when stopping at lights or pronounced engine rattle when coming back to idle.
There are two types of SCV. SHORT or LONG - both of which are available at good prices by clicking the Short or Long words.
Incorrect maf readings due to split hoses.
Split hoses is another favourite of the Navara.
Check the video showing how much they expand! These control fulling based on the MAF readings, but if its reading air flow that’s then being lost out a hose, its putting in fuel that it doesn’t have the air for and hence you get smoke.
You can see how much they expand here without any load! it looks horrific on the dyno!
Blocked intake manifold.
Common for all new EGR cooled Diesels, the intake manifolds clog up with carbon residue and will restrict the flow. Whilst it can be detected by the MAF where it pulls fuel, usually the build up in the intake chokes #4 and #3 worse, resulting in rick AFRs for these two (meaning Smoke) and lean for #1 + #2.
So there it is. That’s not an exhaustive list of things it can be (and it’s a Navara which is always coming up with creative ways to fail) but it is by far and away the most common. - Авто та транспорт
3 years ago I bought a 2014 D40 ST 45000Ks on it . It blew black smoke and fuel economy averaged 9 litres/100klm. I installed the $7 EGR blank plate and replaced the expanding rubber Intake pipe @2:45 with a $150 PLAZMAMAN aluminium hot pipe. My fuel economy average became under 8liters/100klms , I got 940klm on one tank on one long trip and I still get under 8 with 90000klms on the clock and NO smoke.
EDIT. I also at the same time used Liquimoly diesel engine intake decarb to get all the sooty shit caused by the EGR valve out of the intake manifold. these basic mods made a huge improvement and protect the engine from dirty exhaust gases.

Have had problems with my 07 Navara, the sympyoms are that if it idles for any length of time at the lights or a junction for example, then when I go to accelerate it may cut out or be non-responsive or kick out white/grey but mainly black smoke. I'd have problems trying to restart it immediately but if I wait a 30 seconds or so, then it starts and drives ok again. Also under load it's worse but it mainly feels as if it's being starved of fuel. I've taken it to several mechanics; the first one flushed the fuel tank and pipes ...no change. Another mechanic charged £40 for plugging in diagnosic, found no codes but suggested it be the head gasket (took him 10 mins). Another suggested it be my injectors. A reputable company suggested it the Fuel pressure sensor but said it would cost over £900 to change it. Had the fuel pressure sensor changed by another mechanic but he suggested it was a faulty EGR so best to blank it off and get it remapped. Another mechanic thought it might be the MAF sensor so cleaned it but no difference. Decided to do my research and so far it's looking likely to be the SCV. This video backs up my theory too. Saw another UA-cam video that said the short SCV were rubbish and to replace it with the longer one but having difficulty ensuring I get the correct long one. Any suggestion would be helpful. (Sorry for the long comment)

Matt thank you for this info. But I have an issue , a complete different issue. But some smoke is involved. maybe you are able to help out. I live down the South coast now. I know that you know me personally. Now. My issue. I was driving back home from Rosedale one night in my 2008 Nissan D40 ST Diesel. When I noticed black smoke round about Mckenzies beach. Then I lost some power. but still managed to get home a few K's down the road tp Malua. . The next day tried to investigate the problem. took it for a drive when the black smoke turned white. until it stalled. had it towed back to Malua bay. Now I've been told heaps of things. but I have this feeling that it might be the SCV but can't be to sure. It hasn't started since. But it winds over. Have you heard of issues like this??
@@robpeterson8795 same thing happened to my 08 D40. Turned out to be a failed egr. Blanking plate fixed it.

Can anyone give me any advice? I have a bub on the way and my 08 D40 Came up with the diesel particulate filter warning light. I did what was recommended and drove over 80kmh until the light went out. Haven't seen it on since. But now 2 weeks later when I take off I'm blowing black smoke. The car won't pick up or keep power and when it changes through the gears it blows a puff of smoke. It's an Automatic too.

How would u know if pressure pipe has a leak. Can one change the pressure sernsor on the injector pump in place .
Could any one of the issues mentioned also result in shitty power on hills. I have a 79 landcruiser, rebuilt motor, stock 85hp and it will smoke my '12 navara on any hill in my area (costa rica).

Nissan Navara D40 blowing smoke is NORMAL. I have owned mine since new and it blows smoke from the day I drove it out of the dealer. 210 000 klm hassle free driving so far. 2011 model st.

I had the EGR problem, went the not recommended blank off option. worked fine for a couple of months. Which of the other things you mentioned is likely to produce heaps of black smoke and massive loss of torque on hills?
Hello, I have pathfinder 2.5 diesel. Scv gives 29-31 mpa At idle. And the ECU has a task of 28. Is this normal?. The engine is very loud. Pump regenerated. New injectors.
Replaced the scv valve, nothing has changed. Now the idle pressure is 35 MPa
Maybe it is about the thickness of Black smoke when starting off. Black smoke when starting off. And with acceleration. Trottle stops as I accelerate. When I drive at a steady speed, the rattling returns.

There are two problems. Loud, rattling noise like injectors and black smoke in first gear and accelerating. The engine is quiet when I accelerate and loud when I drive at a constant speed.

Honestly, you're at the mercy of your fuel. For this reason we recommend secondary filtration kits to give yourself the best chance of avoiding it.
This explains why the PDF blocks up.

I have a 2009 titanium edition navara. It blows black smoke and in second gear I have virtually no power. I put my foot flat to the floor and it blows a heap of black smoke then it eventually takes off. Really annoying as I need to tow a trailer

You must have the ECU reset. Very common for this to happen if you've changed the SCV and not reset the ECU.
The ECU 'learns' driving the old SCV. Now its a new one, its still trying to drive it like the old one hence the drama. In some vehicles its called 'zeroing the counter'.
Try that and let us know.
I just took possesion of a 2010 navara d40, it's my first diesel car. i didn't realise it was blowing smoke. till i got it home. was just taught an AU $11,500 lesson. anyway, how much would each of the above mentioned problems cot to fix? i Probably have one or more of them. I checked the air filter , it looks brand new but it doesn't look like the right size there there is no good seal. I guess the A-hole that sold me the car tried to fix the problem him self

Hi mate, I'm not the bloke in the vid but this might help you.
Clean your Mass Air Flow sensor. It's a 5 minute job but well worth it.
Just buy a can of M.A.F cleaner from Supercheap/Autobahn and clean it. I do mine every couple months and find it helps. I currently get between 750-850ks per tank and that's mixed city driving and freeway driving. Next time I clean mine I'll put up a vid so you can how it's done.

Thanks a lot for the very helpfull video :-) But what if the smoke ( black ) only occurres on cold starts combined with a "knowking" noise that will last for 15-20 sek ? When warmed up, car runs perfect !

I think my scv is on its way out, I get a hiccup when ever I'm idling especially when the engine is hot the tone of the engine changes and becomes knocky, when I put it on my laptop and monitor the rail pressure when ever it hiccups the rail pressure goes up and up and up until I blip the throttle and the rail press goes to normal and the engine sounds normal again until it hiccups again.

My QD32 blows white smoke during take off and slowing down. It's an old boy but lesser or no smoke when on speed at 4th gear. Any help would do

Higher loads make the average boost levels higher, and the higher engine RPMs help those older injection systems build up more injection pressure.
Very common symptom of the tech of that day.
Hey guys just want to clarify, as stated in the vid about the navara not throwing a fault code when the egr is blocked. Does that mean i can just put a blanking plate in and thats it nothijg else to do? And also the vid was very helpful with an injector issue that i now have resolved cheers

my turbo failed ! and i am getting diesel in my radiator and water system , do you know why this is happening ????
Jodi Balfour it won’t be diesel it will be oil from the failed turbo unit as they are oil fed and water cooled. This will be resolved with a new turbo and a coolant change with the same brand as before for coolant don’t change or mix the brands/type.
that's because your head gasket blew, most likely you will need a complete over haul
My D40 Navara RX Has power lost going uphill ( 60-80 km/h) , which coincides with black smoke. It gets better if I just lightly tap off on the accelerator.
Driving level and downhill is fine. Driving uphill on my farm has never caused the same (low speed) even with weight on the back. Where do I start looking?

So a general question guys - is there any other reason why you wouldn’t blank off the EGR ( other than the the legalities of blanking it ), I mean from ‘affecting the engine’ reason ... ?

One that is rarely spoken about is that the engine is tuned to run WITH the EGR gasses in play. Timing and pilot injection quantities are all adjusted accordingly. That being said, its not a major problem nor are you ANY risk of engine damage, its just not very efficient. You can often here a car with a EGR blank fitted with a rattle circa 2000rpm and light load.
If it were for off road use only ;) I'd be blanking it. Being very aware its illegal to drive on the road that way.

What about EGT’s then - do this increase at all causing reason for concern ?
And I’ve seen some saying you must blank at both ends of that evaporative pipe, the one that has the 2 coolant hoses coming off of it, and others say just the exhaust outlet end of that pipe ? If you block both ends though, does the coolant still circulate through that evaporative pipe properly ?
Lastly, if one was to block it for off-road use only, is there an advantage to also for a quality oil catch can ? The idea I believe is to really minimise how much of that sludgey carbon build up crap gets inside your inlet pipes and butterfly ?
@@4WheelingInNSW Pilot injections are micro quantity injections that are prior to the main injection / combustion. I actually have another video on it. Basically they're there to stop a rattle. intake temp plays a massive part in the fuel volume and timing of these micro injections and therefore 'messing' with the EGR system can mean that these go 'out of tune' and the engine gets a little rattly again.
Re the piping, no real reason to block both. There are MANY instances where EGR cooler assemblies fail and leak coolant in the engine. Perhaps this is what those people are referring to? If the EGR is effectively blocked, I'd be removing / bypassing the EGR cooler and ensuring no water is going there.
Re the catch cans.
Its actually the carbon from the EGR mixing with the oil mist, forming a carbon mud (sort of thing). you only have to remove one of the ingredients. Remove the oil (catch can) and the carbon from the EGR will freely pass through the engine. Similarly, if you have blanked the EGR, now there is nothing to get stuck in the oil and therefore the oil can freely pass through the engine without mixing and building up. Its unnecessary to do both (unless its high boost applications - another story).

Stuart Yunupingu could be a failed turbo or failed EGR unit choking the engine with exhaust gases.

Best thing you can do for a Diesel is take it in for a tune, they remap the ECU which includes fuel, cams, air etc which will fix this issue as long as there are no underlying issues..... all the while increasing power and fuel consumption.... Also add a oil catch can if you haven't already

Blue smoke on start up is the engine burning oil i'm sorry to say. Its possible that its valve stem seals and not necessarily rings, but its an expensive fix either way and therefore best to get a good mechanic to work out exactly what it is for you.
UA-cam mechanics can only get so far without seeing the car.

My engine knocks until it gets hot and also blows black smoke under acceleration would this be the scv???
@@callumaspinall2765 i had my svc go and i didnt get any knocks. It just wouldnt idle at all would die at lights. Couldnt put the foot down or it would struggle and blow lots of black smoke. How many ks you got on it? It could be the timing chain. Its a pretty common problem with the stock piss weak chains

The pipe expanding is not the intake pipe mate...its the turbo hot pipe...expanding under boost..but I am sure you know that..😉

I've been instructed to use an injector cleaner every now and then to keep the EGR and the injection system clean. I bought the liqui Molly fuel additive for diesels. 70l to 500ml. no smoke at all. but make sure you use the right quantity as it has a hotter rating to the diesel fuel.
need a desperate solution. Coming home just now. Had to pull over smoke was coming out of the motor bay. lifted the bonnet and turned the motor off. The drivers side rear and rear side is covered in oil. I've dropped oil or something snapped??? Has anyone experienced this. The ute is a 2005 Nissan Navara D22 diesel 3l. had to be towed home?? Help!!!!

It seems Matty that I have blown the motor. Don't know how, I have looked after the motor like a baby. I lifted the oil filler lid while the motor was running. and it was like a volcano lifting of the rocker. ii seems that the oil spewing out was because of pressure from the blown motor. the valve on the rocker cover was where the oil was spewing out . Hope I am right with the Diag. smoking from the oil filler hole as well. Does it seem right?
also thanks for you site here. I was recently following along about the EGR valve. I also have a D40 2.5l diesel. I was told from a local Nissan service repairer that the problem I had was the diesel pump and so would cost over 3 grand to fix. But after following this site that you have I thought maybe it is a SC valve or EGR. So got them both, But because the SC valve is a bit difficult to get at I decided to fit the EGR first. process of Elimination. It was the EGR. It's running like a dream. thanks Matty. just got major issues now with the Navara now
Blocked my egr and now I'm racing again without black smoke.
PCV Valve? I have just installed a reconditioned 2.5TD. Driven less than 400km she has started to blow smoke, (I think it is black), the mechanic has been back out to look at her and has blamed the PCV valve and now I need to replace the rocker cover ($250) due to the PCV being built into the cover.
Work to date- recon motor (HMgem), New injectors, fuel pump, blanked off EGR, MAF, SCV, and all filters replaced.. Are these guys pulling my leg!
I'm sorry to say, but it's a hard one to comment on. My 'commercial' opinion is to probably change the suggested part at this time, and see how things got on.

Current update: The nav lasted a week, and the turbo (garett GT2056v) snapped its shaft. The motor began to run over. (Running on her own oil) Car has been in the workshop for three weeks now. I have no idea about the damage done yet. Apparently, the intercooler and manifolds are full of oil and turbo needs to be replaced.

@DieselGeeksOz car has been returned, seems to run ok, no rattles. Turbo is very quiet compared to my old one. It almost seems like it's a lower boost.
Problem she blows white smoke again
.only while accelerating in low gears off the lights or reversing. But no smoke on the freeway while cruising at 110knh in 6th.
You can only see it at night in headlights, not obviousduring the day.
I'm not sure what to do. Lubemobile has cost me a lot more than the cars' worth. Shattered!!
@@seancampbell3381 to be fair mate, an older diesel will almost always have that haze visible from the headlights behind at night time.
I'd send them the comment in the email so that it's logged, but tell them that you'll put 10,000-20,000kms on it and see how things go.
Best case, motor beds in properly and it goes away, or it gets worse and it needs attention.

Can injector cleaner fix it ?
Depends on the issue. IF its a EGR failure or split intake pipe for example, its like throwing a shot glass at a bush fire. Nothing doing.
It can help however if you've had an issue which was causing the engine to soot. This soot - even if you've now fixed the root cause, will have 'carboned' up the engine. Removing this carbon will help. Some injector cleaners are good for this, as is a hydrogen based carbon clean.
