I mean, the drop in quality and Serina still being active should have given you the idea that maybe these are backwards. Then I'm none the wiser. But my man Forge able to tackle an Arbiter and giving him the one two for the win, and being honored by a Spartan, what a way to go.

At that point we had already watched half the movie and all of Halo Wars 2 😂 It would’ve been nice to see the tittle screen for Halo Wars 2 in the first video like they showed for Halo Wars in this one. Then we could’ve stopped it earlier.
When we edit the videos we watch we do it blind. Looking at the halfway point of the video for a dip in audio in premiere pro (usually a black screen) then cut the video there. Sometimes looking a few seconds before or after the cut. For this one I saw two big dudes walking off a ship and was like, that looks ominous, a good place to cut 🤗

Cortana is a little bit sassy, whereas Serina is more snarky. She really does care, but she has a very aloof demeanor. She usually only makes the snarky remarks when there's no need for urgent communication, and I feel like it's meant to be a tension-reliever for Cutter. Maybe that help keeps him from overtaxing himself during intense situations.
And yes, this new/chronologically older Arbiter is Ripa Moram'ee, who (if I'm not mistaken) was basically a serial killer turned fanatical puppet by the prophets. Big, even by Elite standards, and very aggressive. Our Arbiter, Thel Vadam'ee, is a lot more reasonable.
And rest in peace to Forge. Most ODSTs couldn't tango with Ripa, but here's normal marine Forge squarin' up like he owns the place. Johnson will forever be the king of charisma, but I think even he couldn't take Forge if the two came to blows.
And since I mention it in almost every Halo comment I make to you guys, I 100% recommend checking out "Halo: Legends". They're 8 animated shorts made by different animation companies (Toei is one of them, if I'm not mistaken), and they tell little side stories about the Halo universe. One covers an important part in the history of the Arbiters, one shows a bit of the rivalry between Spartans and ODSTs, and another is 3d animated and PACKED with action.

The games have not explained it yet, but the reason why Cortana is so friendly with Master Chief and other people in general compared to other AIs like Serina is that she was modeled off a human person. Her personality is basically a copy of Dr. Halsey, a character prominent in Halo Reach, who spearheaded the Spartan Program. It explains why Serina is so blunt and unemotional whereas Cortana displays genuine emotion even if she is an AI.

    • @luisalmanza119

You're not wrong in that Cortana showed a preference from the beginning towards the Chief due to her foundation being Halsey, but Serina isn't exactly emotionless. She shows quite a bit of emotion during her monologue in Halo Wars 2. It is quite obvious that Cutter cared for her too.

As far as I'm aware, the reason Cortana has more complex thoughts and emotions is because she's a more complicated AI than the others, as she came from Forerunner technology, and her AI is patterned after Dr. Halsey's brain, whereas other AIs are completely artificial. Out of all the cutscenes of the halo saga, the ones from halo wars 1 are the ones I hold in the highest regard. Part of this is of course because halo wars 1 was the first RTS (real-time strategy) game that I ever played. Despite that nostalgia-infused bias, however, I think I can speak for most of us halo fans when I say that these cutscenes were a true highlight of the campaign.
First off, this game was developed by a completely different studio - that being ensemble studios - and they really went to town with the visuals. This was released on the xbox 360 in the middle of its lifespan and pretty much set the bar for pre-rendered cutscenes. It might look a bit dated now, especially regarding the faces, but compared to the competitors of the time, there is just no contest. I do want to point out that ensemble studios did an amazing job capturing the aesthetics and atmosphere of old bungie-era halo, within an extended universe where some liberties are taken with the creative property.
As far as world-building, these cutscenes do all you could ask for and more, which is surprisingly important if you want to tell a story within an RTS game, since the actual gameplay is so disconnected from any individuality. Most of the story of the campaign during actual gameplay is told through voice lines that have no visual representation besides the static image of the character who is currently talking. Either that, or the medium of visual storytelling through the various environments that the game's campaign is set in.
*It also does a great job with the music, creating an original score that - once again - feels right at home in the halo universe without being overly derivative.*
It captures the eerie tone of the original... *idea* - of halo in a few sequences, exploring ancient technologies left behind by a super advanced alien civilization. This element in particular, is what I think 343 industries - the current developer of halo - are unable to capture, along with that spark that the original star wars movies embody. That spark of unbridled optimism in the face of impossible odds, all the while not taking itself too seriously, taking the time to sprinkle in an odd joke or three. These little "breaks" from the rather depressing implications of the story help with some much-needed grounding, and are in my *humble opinion* the linchpin of what make the original star wars trilogy and - coincidentally - the original halo trilogy, into the timeless classics that they are.
Just like with any other classic story, beloved by fans the world over, halo wars was not well received by the existing fanbase upon release. Yet despite this, it has stood the test of time and was actually quite revolutionary when it comes to actual gameplay mechanics, since before halo wars there weren't really any good RTS games on consoles. They felt more like ports from PC, which makes sense because many RTS games - the likes of "starcraft" - require you to utilize your entire keyboard to micromanage your army accurately and effortlessly. Having only access to a controller means you need to make some compromises here and there to make the game playable at all on consoles. Halo wars did this, and in doing so put RTS games on the map for consoles. Now, it certainly wasn't perfect, but it was a good middle ground between streamlining and overcomplicating the systems in place, and its something that people often seem to overlook when reminiscing about this IP.

I ended up splitting the comment into 2 because it was too long for youtube apparently XD

Finally, I would like to commend ensemble studios once again, for just having an intimate understanding of what makes the genre of science-fiction SO appealing for many. Unlike fantasy, science-fiction *draws inspiration* from science, rather than just making up stuff on the spot. This approach innately gives depth to your world, as a lot of it is based in actual science. You don't need to be told that closely orbiting a star is going to be a perilous maneuver at the end of the halo wars cutscene, because it has been made obvious by the pre-defined rules established by science in the real world. Find a good analogy for this scene in a fantasy novel, and you can bet your sweet *behind* that the protagonist is going to make it out just fine, because they are "the chosen one" (and "magic", love, or even just the sheer will to do "x" is likely involved...) This lowers the stakes regardless of the canonical implications, because your rules can just be broken by your protagonist for the sake of the plot. Incidentally, this is exactly the sort of thing that separates the likes of "star wars", from "halo":
Star wars is more like science-fantasy, having the literal "chosen ones" possess "magic" in the form of "the force" . The way a LOT of scientifically based concepts commonly used as plot devices of other works in the genre are seemingly glossed over in favor of a more shallow interpretation of the same thing, compared to something like "star trek". Thus, on some level, you cannot get invested in certain narrative devices of the story, because they do not conform to any pre-defined rules and are instead the sole product of the writer's imagination. Its like watching a game of sports for the first time, without knowing the rules... Except that this analogy is insufficient because of the aforementioned tendency to *break* any semblance of those very rules that have been established previously in the given story - imagine being invested in a game of soccer, only for someone to suddenly pull the rug out from under you and dictate the rules of the game, making it so that scoring a "goal" has nothing to do with physically displacing the ball inside the actual *goal* ?! There would be RIOTS!
Needless to say, there are pro's and con's to fiction vs science-fiction, from a writers point of view.
Meanwhile, halo has significantly more "rules" that are inspired by real-world science and that is why it can be equally as engaging to learn about the intricacies of epidemiology and how it affects the halo universe, as it is to experience a traditional "love story" in a Disney movie. *It actually has tangible repercussions to understanding these concepts on a basic level in the context of a work of science-fiction storytelling, worth its salt.* Now, I'm sure more than a few people who make it this far down this wall of text are going to find this part about "halo vs star wars" (which is really just an attempt at an objective comparison from someone who does not discriminate against either fanbase, and holds both IP's in equally high regards, though in different - *and indifferent* - ways).
Coming back to the original example in the first paragraph, of the 2nd segment of this comment; While the stakes are high in this climax of the halo wars 1 story, and the way the "spirit of fire" and the majority of her crew makes it out alive and well through some heavy use of plot armor, the concept at the core of this whole part of the plot is actually very scientifically feasible: They are orbiting the star so close because the deeper inside the gravity "well" of an astronomical object you are, the easier it becomes to speed up. This is due to a well-known phenomenon in orbital mechanics dubbed the "Oberth effect". Well-known, because it is famously confusing and seemingly contradictory when trying to grasp its implications outside of mathematical terms (so go to town on the wikipedia article on it - I promise you won't regret it). Couple that with the "gravity assist" maneuver that they are simultaneously executing - which is also a very real (and commonly utilized) method of increasing your spacecraft's momentum by "stealing" it from another object, preferably one that is orders of magnitude more massive. Gravity assists are best described simply as the exchange of kinetic energy between two objects. So its like what voyager 1 & 2 did in the 1970's, slinging by the gas giants of our solar system and kicking away from them as they pass them, slightly nudging the planets in the opposite direction as they do, just like you might push against the floor of a pool with your feet, as you launch yourself forward.
Now, I'm sure some people would think this scene is complete bogus concerning the implications of "flying" so close to a star... However; while the surface of the sun - and its immediate vicinity - is hot, its actually not THAT hot. In fact, the "corona" of the sun is actually significantly hotter than it is closer to or at the "surface", due to the solar wind, among other things (the inner workings of which are still largely up for debate in the scientific community). For reference, in the real world, the distance at the time of *closest approach* of the "solar orbiter spacecraft" (sent by the ESA (European space agency) to conduct research upon our hot-tempered mother), was that of a mere 42 million kilometers from the "barycenter" of the sun (so 41.3 million kilometers from the surface of the sun, factoring in the diameter, I guess). This having been accomplished without any particularly high-tech - "exotic" - method of cooling (rather just clever engineering), and being well within the zone which is several times *hotter* than the actual surface of the sun, I find this particular gripe to be a non-issue, under closer scrutiny. Granted, this is mostly thanks to the "vacuum" around stars being sufficiently devoid of matter, such that the propagation of thermal radiation is minimal. The perceptive reader may also note that by extension, according to this logic, losing your acquired "heat" is quite difficult in a vacuum, which is a very real issue engineers have to contend with when designing any sort of spacecraft. Nevertheless, in the context of the halo universe, its doesn't break the internal logic of this fictional universe that the "energy shields" these spaceships possess, can act as some kind of insulator.
I guess science-fiction writers are all defense attorneys, in a way; it's all about plausible deniability - the sustaining of one's disbelief.

This is why this game was alot more detached from the usual halo universe with separate assets, characters, and even unique vehicle assets that were supposed to be for the other game they wanted to make. They were and still are extremely pissed at Microsoft regarding Halo. Halo Reach serves as a testament of them taking all the Expanded Universe lore and shitting on it out their dislike of Microsoft forcing them to have it. Halo Wars was just them yet again not appreciating other's people's love, and willingness to work in their specific sandbox. This is why even despite Halo Wars performing well, maintaining a fairly active MP community for a time, Bungie really didn't do much to work with the guys, or lore developed. Fun Fact, based on some calculations done by some dedicated gamers, they concluded that if just 100 Infection Forms (those tiny octopus looking things) managed to arrive on modern day Earth (2017) all life on Earth minus underneath our oceans would be wiped out in just under 18 hours. It takes just 3-4 seconds to turn a human host into a Flood Form after being infected by an Infection Form.
As part of the Flood life cycle, once a suitably large enough populace has been devoured by the Flood, it forms something called a Flood Hive. Inside that Hive, a Flood Gravemind forms, which is basically an omnipotent massive Flood organism with complete control over all other flood forms in its vicinity (usually the local Galaxy). Once there is no life left in the Galaxy, the Flood will leave the galaxy, and enter a new one with the intention of starting the process over again.
One of the other things the Flood have going for it that makes it unstoppable is called the Logic Plague, which is not a physical form of the Flood, nor is it biological in nature. Instead, it is a philosophical virus, and effects Artificial Intelligences. Basically, the Flood can manipulate Artificial Intelligences into acting a certain way, and because of this, AI that are affected by this Plague are often thought to be suffering from Rampancy, which is the final stage of an AI's life cycle where after a period of time (around 7 years for Human AI) the AI's cognitive processors divide exponentially because of interconnected memory mapping. In the process of trying to create more memory for itself, by dividing existing memory, the AI literally thinks itself to death.
The effects of rampancy include the AI longing for Godlike power, and contempt for their inferior makers.
The effects of the Logic Plague are similar, and in fact its heavily implied that Cortana was affected by the Logic Plague and NOT going Rampant.
THIS is the reason the Forerunners created the Halo rings. To wipe out galaxies in an effort to starve the Flood of suitable hosts. The Rings were not made to destroy the Flood, but rather their food sources.

The Gravemind and Keymind require heavy amounts of bodies, and even with most of the Covenant present from multiple ships and more then a few humans, they only barely reached a Proto-Mind Stage in Halo 1 which was weak enough Keyes resisted it. Not to mention that you had good ole Jenkins who resisted it and allowed for the Covenant Truth and Reconciliation to be blown up by the Human Survivors before Major Silvia could continue his idiocy and doom humanity by slipspace jumping back to Earth with infection and combat forms aboard.

Terrifyingly fun fact: When Humans captured some flood who had gained higher intelligence either by creating a Gravemind or special infection( just stick with me here) the Humans asked the flood what infection truly meant. This was during the War between Humans, Flood, and the Forerunners. The Flood then explained it to them and all the humans who heard committed suicide because they knew death was better than what was coming

I guess the Arbitrator likes to drag people by the neck or head since he does it in half the scenes he's in.

As for Red Team (the three of em) they were actually Spartan II "dropouts" sorta. Basically their initial augmentation failed but UNSC put them through other sets of procedures and now they're back in action
    On that note about AIs.
You could say Serina is like old and mature and got this in the bag. Her sas definitely could've been the brain donor that's for sure. As for Isabel well... Let's just say she's like young and inexperience kinda, so more emotional which isn't bad either.

Atriox is indeed a badass. Make sure when you guys finally get to Halo Infinite that you watch a Legendary Ending playthrough, there's a tradition of hiding a special video on legendary.
You guys are prolly used to Cortana, whom has literal engrams based on Dr. Catherine Halsey. Serina is one of the few absolutely pure AIs, and it's very very likely she would survived a lot longer than seven years before going rampant. If you listen to her last words, you can tell how she actually feels. Every AI in the halo universe is unique and all have different personalities, this is a deliberate copying of elements of the RingWorld scifi series, as are... well ring worlds.
Halo Wars is one of those super rare spin off that keeps up with or even exceeds the original. Halo's direction in recent sequels was to absolutely lean into the "ultra ultimate final super amazing chosen one for all the galaxy and universe and forever" for John-117, and it wasn't particularly well received amongst the "future grognard" crowd of Halo's fanbase, most of whom preferred the heavy military industrial themes present in the first novels and games, even those these have their own "bullet porn" issues as well.
Halo Infinite was a mix of both approaches, and while the SP campaign was generally well received, the MP experience has been the usual "this game is a live service" mess, complete with M$ acknowledging MP will probably take literal years to fix, and it remains to be seen if the fanbase will hang around that long.
Halo Wars was also one of the best received new RTS game in years, especially for consoles.
