- Hi lovelies, this Whirlpool Mermaid tumbler quickly became a favourite with customers and tumbler artisans alike. The style has been adapted to a mermaid/watercolour and design theme. This is the original tutorial for this technique.
In this video, I will share with you a step-by-step tutorial on how I make these Whirlpool Mermaid tumblers.

Love this tutorial! Just a quick tip, that I use, is to kinda bend your scales around the back of your pinkie and it makes them lay flat on your cup. I hope that makes sense.

Ok I never comment...but this had to be the most amazing thing I’ve seen...u said cardstock and I was stuck at that point...I had to see how the heck u were putting cardstock on a tumbler...when u started putting them scales one at a time I was done!!!????...I thought that was good as it got ...them when u pulled out the flakes.....man oh man...yes this was truly a labor of love..excellent excellent work..this is truly beautiful

It might be able to be done on a pen but I don't stock pens and I haven't made a device for turning them. I think I've seen someone in my Facebook group make one on a pen but now I can't say I'm 100% sure.

Can you possibly do a tutorial on how we price our cups?
I've had this asked a few times, but truthfully there are too many variables that will affect pricing. For instance, quality of materials, geographic location, difficulty of design, experience of the maker.
I wouldn’t sell digital files. Just tumblers. I’m thinking I can find a local outlet to sell for me. Just not sure what Zi should be thinking about with that. Thank you for the input
Would you mind sharing how selling with Etsy works? For an example. When I get as good as I’m hoping I would like to have this as a business but never have done anything like this before. Not sure what to expect. Anything you can share will be helpful. Thank you
I'm probably not the best resource for Etsy seller advice. I only sell digital files through Etsy so I'm unfamiliar with fulfilling and shipping physical items. If you're interested in selling digital files, Etsy isn't my favourite selling platform which is why I'm trying to transition away from Etsy.

How did you keep adding glitter? Did you add epoxy over glitter?
I only added epoxy to glitter when I mentioned. I think it was twice in this tutorial. When you use different sized cuts and only sprinkle it on, you can later the glitter colours. It will leave some gaps that finer cuts of glitter will fill.
curious how you get the colors to lay over, and over each other without another layer of epoxy or tacky spray...once I cover with glitter, I can't get another color to stick.
The colour is built up. It's not saturated with glitter. If I were to dump it and saturate the colour I would need to add more epoxy. By controlling the amount I apply, and using different sizes of glitter I'm able to do this.
Which grill mat do you use? That's the only thing I don't see linked in the comments.
The one I used is no longer available on Amazon. But if you search BBQ grill mat or oven grill mat you should find what you're looking for.
This is beautiful but with the time and materials, I have to wonder how cost effective it is.
I always charge more for advanced tumblers like these 🙂

Ok, serious question. How much do you sell these for? I feel like you'd need to sell it for $100 to make it worth while. Also , how much does all that stuff add to the weight of the cup? What does it weigh bare, and then after your done?
I sell them for $65 for 20 oz. But you need to price based on your own set of circumstances (cost of materials, experience, geographic area). I don't weight them. I find any textured or cup with this much detail and depth will have more weight. I've never had a complaint from a customer regarding weight.

Yes, I think you will get really nice results with the inks as well :)

Thank you! It doesn't need to be 100lb. You could use a thinner cardstock. I just like the texture I get from the 100 lb

How much epoxy do you use in your flood coats for these?
For the 20 oz I mix 10 ml for the first coat and 15 ml for the flood coat.
