@@brokefisherman4557 Howdy, partner. Old comment, but I figured I’d try to help out in case you were still interested in the Saddle Mountain Skinner. It’s a solid piece, especially for skinning and food preparation, but the the reason I wouldn’t recommend it for “survival” would be because of the handle. It’s a thin boy. Good for skinning grips and such, but isn’t all that comfortable for extended carving and stuff. There’s a sort of jimping on the entire spine of the handle that makes it even more uncomfortable for hammer grip cuts. I honestly can’t recommend it unless you’re looking for a pure hunting knife. On top of all that, the new models are pushing $200, maybe even more nowadays, and there’s just a lot of better knives for “survival” and just general outdoor tasks in that price range. I was lucky enough to catch one of the old models on discontinued sale for $90. Another reason may be the thickness of the blade itself. I don’t know how you treat your knives, but if you’re really hard on them, I think it’ll be too thin for your liking.
Amazing knives, all Spanish ones that I have, Nieto, Muela and my favourites, Joker! I have plenty of joker knives but my absolute favourite is now the Lynx...did not expect to like it that much, but I've got it like 1 month ago and it was with me everywhere...from the kitchen to the country side! Such a great job on this man. You really brought some different and exciting options to the table this year. Just proves that your channel is irreplaceable.
I love my BK 18! It's my favorite fixed blade I picked up this year! I will be wearing it today when I head out for a trip to cut down a Christmas tree! Thank you for all the great video's, keeping us entertained through 2020!
Germany is watching Gideon ... nice channel , profund content ... already bought several blades because of your recommendation ... and I was never disappointed !
Still very happy with the ESEE-6 I bought after your recommendation a couple years ago. Even though it's quite heavy to bring on a mountain hike I've been happy to have done so every time. Simply a great product! Keep on keeping on :)
Still rocking my Morakniv Companion in carbon steel and it is tough as nails and stays sharp as a razor. I added petina to mine to help preserve the carbon blade and protect it from rusting by soaking it in mustard and it looks amazing! I think I paid like $20.00 for it about 3 years ago and it is a excellent, very durable, budget friendly choice that gets the job done every time!
I got tired of 1095 steel. it works as any steel does but it dulls even with the humidity that is in the air. Nowdays, with a small ceramic rod, you can keep sharp any steel in the field. At least a good 52100 or 80CRV2, holds better edge and are both tougher and cut smoother!
@@alanmeyers3957 Yes of course, but at 56--57 where most of the 1095 is, no matter what the geometry, it dulls really fast for a working blade. Now if I had it on a knife I would use for a cut, once in a while, then it would be just fine! I have got bored using that steel. O1 is noticably better! Also all my knives that are made of it, the steal eats up really fast, because it's easy to sharpen, the blade don't last much, before it changes it's shape a lot. Steels that are a bit higher, are great. 80CRV2, 52100,3V, even stainless CPM154, M390, all hold their sharpness longer and I never had problem sharpening them as some people say. Any steel either on stones or with a small ceramic rod, comes back sharp, with some strokes.
@@greekveteran2715 not all 1095 steel is equal. For example it would be interesting to put that kabar harpoon up against the ESEE 6 and do some edge testing. Heat treat on any carbon steal is a big factor. If the heat treat is too high the hardness will be there but it will be brittle too. I like ESEE 1095 because I feel comfortable sharpening it in the field, its tuff and so long as I dont lose it they will replace it no questions asked if some how I find a way to break it. If I can get practice field sharpening with say 3v or D2 I may change my mind. Not sure about D2 tho, I dont want steel that may chip when my families life may depend on being able to use the tool.
Hi from Finland! Rokka Korpisoturi looks a lot like traditional Finnish puukko-style knife, but with a slight modern twist to its design (and materials of course). I suspect this is a great bushcraft tool. I'll get one to try it out. In the old days folks only had a puukko and an axe in the forest, and they were fine.
Dude I love the episodes even year's later. I am recently thinking of getting the GCK tanto version in Grey cerakote with g-10 but am a little worried about rust corrosion with the 5160 steel. Beautiful blade for sure!
Field Buddy.... If you love everything about the ESEE 5 except the thickness, now you've got a great option. Owner of The Knife Connection is a great guy. That's coming from a long-time repeat customer.
I really like the BK 18! It's on the list! Gerber was great back in the 80's but not sure I could trust them again. The ESEE Junglas Is my next fixed blade knife. Green coating with the orange scales. Great video as always GT, thanks!
Never owned an US made knife, thanks to you I have a TOPS knifes Brakimo... haven’t let me down so far, love it! But since I live in Sweden I won’t be replacing my Gränsfors Bruk axe with any US made axe any time soon😉 Thank you for another great video👍🙌
Speaking of Tops Knives. I decided to splurge on two specimens of their craftsmanship. Firstly, the ridiculously long 11½ inch Tops Steel Eagle, and my favorite of the two, their Ucon Hawk. Something I'm still trying to wrap my head around. A hatchet/hawk that is sharp enough to shave hair.
18:40 hell yeah TAIWAN 💪 I live in the same city (Taichung) as WorkTuffGear. They're a family owned business. Very experienced knife makers and terrific designers. They also did a great job on the website.
Awesome picks! My gripe is with ESEE. I own a 5 and an Isula II. For the Ant, I don't care that the sheath is plastic. On the 5, the sheath is Kydex, and it's awesome! It used to be that way for the 4, 5, 6 and Junglas. Now only the 5 and the Junglas have the Kydex sheath. That sucks. They're not the most expensive knives, but they're not cheap either. ESEE should have upped their price by $5 and kept the Kydex. (Cause $5 is probably their finished cost for Kydex). Juss sayin'............Merry Christmas to you and your family!! Cheers
Been watching your channel for a long time and after seeing the elbrus review i had to get it and i love it . Next knife for me is between that bk18 and a tops BOB for the more smaller jobs
I bought a Tops BOB in Coyote after ensuring I had a Becker BK2 in each of our family vehicles already. That BOB knife is mine and it goes in my adventure bag. Andrew of Gideon Tactical is fuelling my knife/tool addiction. LOL Cheers.
The field buddy had been my new favorite knife. Love my esee 6 but I tend to grab the field buddy first. The esee was upgraded with the knife connections scales and sheath too.
Thanks for the Grip6 Belts recommendation. Just got a 3 pack. Very nice. It is hard to find decent belts. Good price, well made, look nice. Should last a long time, and we shall see. Later.
That Rocker knife has been around for years. Usually in a black leather sheath, with a roller lock on it. It is their military knife. Two sizes, the longer one is the best. The Cold steel bowie has antler inserts now!
Time to find a new favorite I suppose. Hogue may be a good company to look into. Its a knife company who originally started out making gun grips for Sig Saurer pistols. They might be to your liking.
ColdSteel definitely gave alot of knife for the money. I mean the Code-4 was what $80 for XHP !!! then more recently S35VN.. the American Lawman for $100. the SRK for $43 in SK-5 and $170 for 0.20" blade Stock in 3V .... I mean.... idk if they are my absolute favorite, but they are most definitely a top 3-5 company. Too me they were a simpler, much tougher Spyderco. they will be missed incredibly

Bought several drop forged Survivalists at $65 each or less. Only one in 2021 for $139 list looks to be a reissue of the smaller 6.75 Bowie style with handle scales
After hearing about the sale I ordered a fixed blade Recon Tanto, AD10 and a SRK compact before they all change color and Bear Grylls has a line. Better to cry now about the bill than to cry later about the quality. AD10 supposed to arrive tomorrow.
Love your choices. Just not a mora style knife kinda guy. I've had some. All failed me one way or another. Great selection this year. Can't wait to see what you have for us next year! Keep it up. Been watching your channel for years.
I like the new scales on the Esee 5/6 - great looking and deep texture lines - but I like the scales from TKC better because they dont thin out too much on the top front right where your thumb's webbing presses hard. The Esee scales are a little more grippy, but the TKC's are more comfortable for hard use. If you buy your Esee 6 from TKC you can select your scale color and get a far far better slide lock kydex sheath. Also, if you like the Esee 6 but want a saber grind and thicker tip with a better coating (no LineX) get the TKC Architect 6.5, pick your scale, and the slide-lock kydex is fantastic too.
How much for all of them? So many good knives. Makes me sick to think of all the money I spent in years passed on cheap crappy knives. The price of learning.
