@@unveuunion2805 - Yeah no... At concerts, the entire crowd holds their breath waiting for Stevie songs... they more or less stick around for Lindsay Buckingham songs... and they flood the concession stands and bathrooms during Christine McVie songs. She's not bad or anything, but almost nobody is buying tickets to see her.
The end of “the Chain” is one of my all time favorite “crescendo” song parts. The bass setting it up, the drums taking it over and the “angry guitar” finishing; it’s just “washing over you”.
@@jasonremy1627 The song was about the two singing really relationship break up in fact most of that songs on the album where about band members and their relationships and how toxic it was
Kudos, VERDY, for adding You Make Loving Fun to this review. Christine was the glue that held this group together as well as being the composer/ lyricist on many of their songs and being an accomplished musician and vocalist in her own right. Every single member of this group was vital to their overall success but Christine was always my fave!
I just want to applaud your fans. Usually when I comment with some bit of trivia (because I am an old coot) it just sits there. However with part one I mentioned the previous incarnations of Fleetwood Mac and received so many replies from others I was amazed. Stevie and Lindsey first album Buckingham and Nicks is one for acoustic guitar lovers and should be reviewed. My only complaint with this iteration of Fleetwood Mac is the diminished roll Christine McVie played as I still love her sultry voicing and songwriting acumen. Still the music is fantastic and fueled my life for years.
Love Christine too. But imo she should have had LESS of a role in this album. If they replaced Oh Daddy with Nicks' Silver Springs, the album would be even better. Also no Silver Springs was a reason for a Fleetwood Mac without Christine, Stevie AND Lindsey in the 90's. Remember that 95 line up, sheesh.
I fully agree. people are often fascinated by flashier players, but this drum/ bass duo id one of the most tasteful, and it grooves! I saw a video with Mike Mills, the bass player for R.E.M. He tells the story of one of their hits (I think that it was « Man on the moon ») for which he couldn’t find a good bass part. He was stuck. And then, remembering how great the bass is on Fleetwood Mac’s album he asked himself: what would John McVie play on a song like this? And that how the part came to him!
Songbird Christine McVie passed today. Seeing your reactions to Songbird and Don't Stop was marvelous, fresh, and uplifting on such a sad day. Christine had a voice like an angel, and wrote and performed with passion. So appreciate your interpretation and impressions of this recording. Thank you Verdy!
Like it was mentioned before side 2 of the original album started with The Chain , did not include the song Silver Springs but included the song You Make Lovin' Fun. While Silver Springs is without question a good song I would not have chosen it over You Make Lovin Fun on the release of the album. I also remember the impact of flipping the album over and putting the needle on and hearing The Chain as the first track of the B side and I have to disagree with the production choice of starting with any other song in the re-release of this album. Only my opinion of course.
Actually the song they included instead of silver springs was I don’t want to know. Which I also prefer to silver springs. You make loving fun though is maybe the best song on the album. Love it so much.
@@johnr8095 That was for the original release of the album. I was refering to the re-release where they included Silver Springs and omitted You Make Loving Fun. Interesting factoid though.
@@andrewmackinnon3378 I didn’t realize they did that. That’s sacrilege. You make loving fun is actually my favorite song on the album. What were they thinking?
I'm glad you listened to the version with Silver Springs on it. That song was left off of the original album due to time constraints, and likely band politics.
Interesting - I just did a double take when I heard it. Bought the album when it was new and was expecting The Chain to be the first song on the second side! I'm glad the re-release has it!
Yeah it's a shame it was left off the original album, Stevie was devastated when it was left off but they added it as a b-side to the Go Your Own Way single back in 77.
Thx. Always a big pleasure to watch your honest reactions. Keep it up. Fleetwood Mac for me is a very rare merge between 3 English musicians: Drums (Fleetwood), bass and the English vocal girl with keyboards, and the American couple: Guitar/male song and female song. In a top 10 of all time greatest albums, this is definitely in there. And I am a hard rock guy (Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and modern Måneskin), but this pop album is feel good, weak lyrics, but insanely good, with no bad songs, only masterpieces, blending English an American music in the early 70's. It will stand throughout time. Peace.
You should check out a live version of Silver Spring, and watch the interaction between Stevie and Lindsey (she wrote the song about him). They stare each other down, both essentially screaming at each other in the song's climax. Lindsey's finger style on electric guitar sometimes sounds like a banjo.
Now your life will be much better having heard this incredible album. There aren't many albums that don't have a bad son on them, but this is one of the few.
Verdy Rumours is just another perfect example of a perfectly crafted and produced album from the 70's. Albums like this and others like the Eagles Hotel California, Boston 's self titled album, Kansas's Point of Know Return just aren't made today. But as far as Fleetwood Mac goes Verdy you owe it to yourself to check the concert video The Dance and watch this band do their magic live 😄💚
I feel like none of the other albums you mentioned come close to this. In fact I think Hotel California is a really dull album where really only the title track stands out. Rumours is one of the very few albums where every single track is amazing. Can't even say that about Abbey Road or Sgt. Pepper even though I prefer both to Rumours.
This album had such a huge cultural impact, and so many of the songs are still routinely played in numerous places that it was hard to believe at first that you'd never listened to it previously (although it became clear that you did recognize some of the songs later). But it was a pleasure to watch your reactions as you went through the whole album; it certainly reminded me of how much my friends and I loved it so much when it came out, and have continued to love it for over 40 years.
I have been listening to this album since it was released. I am impressed with how you pick up every tiny little detail in the music. I have probably noticed everything you mentioned at different times over the course of years actually decades. I applaud you for your ability to notice the details. I am impressed.
@@jasonremy1627 Peter Green was such an amazing guitar player… and such a humble man. He didn’t want to be the star. They did some great music with him!
It was so nice to watch you discover this album. I have been listening to it since it came out in 1977. I now own 46 Fleetwood Mac albums. They began as a blues band in 1967. There have been 18 people in the band and 14 different lineups. This is the most famous lineup. Stevie Nicks on vocals, Christine McVie on vocals and keyboards, Lindsey Buckingham on vocals and guitar, John McVie on bass and Mick Fleetwood on drums. The 3 lead singers also write their own songs. Having 3 singers gives them a very unique sound.
Thanks for reviewing this album. I had forgotten how good Fleetwood Mac was. I never thought of Duel or gunfight listening to The Chain. But it makes perfect sense.
You are very skillful in picking out details in songs. I am taking an ear training course for bass guitar, and this is one of the things it teaches you to do. I have been passionate about music since the 1970s and you already much better than I am in noticing all these details.
You have inspired me to check out my old record collection, and i found it in the basement, forgotten through the years. Tanks for that. I have started doing like you, it´s fantastic to remember old times and it´s music. Love from Sweden.
We oldsters can tell you that the original Rumours didn’t have Silver Springs on it. Which I call the Stalker Song... There wasn’t room on the vinyl for such a long song, and everyone but a very angry Stevie wanted to keep it off. Some felt the sound didn’t fit in with the rest of Rumours. They offered to include her vocal duet with Lindsay on I Don’t Want to Know as a consolation prize. And the record already had Stevie’s Gold Dust Woman, which is almost 5 minutes long. I think she got a fair shake from the band, FWIW. It’s a beautiful, heartbreaking song, with a very rough, raw ending, one of their classics, in any case. Silver Spring’s lyrics were actually VERY current with the breakup of Lindsay and Stevie at that time. The Chain and Dreams came from the same troubles. And Go Your Own Way was Lindsay’s take on it all. You have to credit Lindsay for adding great guitars and vocals to a song that made him out to be the villain. And then he had to sing it with Stevie in concert knowing that !
And Stevie also hated singing the lyric, "packing up, shacking up is all you want to do." She later commented something like, "I didn't pack up or shack up with anyone!"
@@PeckiePeck Except for like one other band memeber... oh and wasn't sara her aborted child or something kekw. Shacking up obv wasn't what she did kek.
@@357d357 I always thought Buckingham's intent with the lyric was that she liked drama. Then she objects to the specific lyric saying she technically didn't move in and out of guys' places. Not the point, Stevie.
I watched the whole thing. That was fun. As a musician, I enjoy your analysis of things. And pulling out the comic book or graphic novel or whatever to make a point was hilarious. But now I really love how much you feel all of the music and notice every little thing.
"You Make Loving Fun" is my top track on the album (and Ms. McVie's "Say You Love Me" is best from the Mac's eponymously-titled album that immediately preceded Rumours) ---v. pleased that you didn't get cheated of it👍 Millions of Gen Xers now aged 50+ grew up in a household with a copy of this record to be found in Mom and/or Dad's collection, and these reax were easy to enjoy...somehow reminded me of the last time that I was in 🇨🇦, listening to a classic rock station on a summer afternoon drive from Montréal to Québec (terre de mes 🇮🇪 aïeux), with all of the familiar lyrics of course in English and the presenter/DJ speaking between songs en français ---not at all typical stuff to me!
Fun fact: while Fleetwood Mac was recording Rumours, Warren Zevon was down the hall recording his Excitable Boy record with Jackson Brown and Waddy Wachtel producing. They were having trouble nailing the feel of a particular track, so Waddy went down the hall and asked if Mick Fleetwood and John McVie would mind sitting in. They did, and nailed the tune by the second try, although they went on to record another 15 or so versions after that. That song became an enormous hit as well, it’s called Werewolves of London, and is a remarkable one. Excitable Boy is well worth a listen, another classic California record of this period, with brilliant playing, and Zevon’s trademark sardonic, hilarious and heartbreaking lyrics.
The 'screaming' at the end of Gold Dust Woman is actually a guitar. For years, I thought it was Stevie's vocals until I saw a documentary about the making of Rumours.
I watched that making of Rumours too on Amazon and when it got to that part he (Lindsey) started laughing and said "wow I don't know what that was we were obviously in a dark place at the time" lol
It's actually not a guitar. You can hear her screams better in this version ua-cam.com/video/Xqn6SMhzmf4/v-deo.html Stevie said that she wanted those screams to sound like a lonely wolf at night howling at the moon or something. I think she quite reached that goal.
Glad you are discovering Fleetwood Mac. They are an exceptionally old band and have been around since the mid-60s and many iterations The most popular of which was the Anglo American combination of the 70s and 80s. They do have some good songs from the earlier period as well that you might be interested in with American lead singer Bob Welch.
'Silver Springs'.....I think that was a song written by her, but was left off the original album. The first time I ever heard it, was when they did their tour....I think it's called 'The Dance'. She's up there on stage & starts singing directly to Lindsay Buckingham. GREAT song & VERY emotional. A 'live' performance too.
Glad "Silver Springs" was included. The only place it fits perfectly was between side 1 & 2. At the last minute it was replaced with "I Don't Want To Know" since it was brighter and not a ballad. Instead it was released as the B side (probably the greatest B side ever) to Go Your Own Way. Yes, you HAVE to see the live version from "The Dance". A real moment in Rock history!
Gold Dust Woman, is one of my all-time favorites, mind you, I have so many all-time favorites and if I had to choose one song above all, I would not be able to decide which would fill that place. Just too much fantastic music out there from classical, all the way thought to folk music. All the best.
Hello Verdy! I loved your reaccion to "Rumours"!! One of my favourite albums of all time!! I think it's perfect, the songs are incredible and they take you through different sensations throughout the album. The arrangements, the melodies, harmonies and the tremendous work of STEVE, CHRISTINE (R.I.P.) and LINDSAY on vocals. A marvel that 45 years later still sounds as if time had not passed. My favourite song is "The Chain", although it's impossible not to end up singing the chorus of "Go Your Own Way" 😁😁 You have to listen to the previous album ""Fleetwood Mac" from 1975. Greetings from ARGENTINA!! 🇦🇷 🤗
I don't think anyone would be upset if you went ahead and did all the Fleetwood Mac Albums from this era, and there's a lot to listen to: "Fleetwood Mac" from 1975, "Tusk" from 1979, "Mirage" from 1982, "Tango in the Night" from 1987, "Say You Will" from 2003.
@@brendonm9601 I saw that tour, September 1980! I was just a little kid (ha ha). They used one of the songs from that concert on their double live album. They used "Never Going Back Again" where Lindsey says, "You're making us feel real good tonight"
You mean "grandma's music" or "great grandma's music" don't you? lol This young lady looks VERY YOUNG. I'm nearing 50 and this was my mom's music (though I grew up on my mom's music and love it). Great to see people of all ages discovering music of all ages...
Rumors was one of the first albums to assemble music track on track. It was ground breaking in its day before computerized music. The album was created at a time the band was falling apart emotionally with breakups and betrayals. At times it was so bad the band members avoided talking to each other except with the music. The success of the album created a situation where they had to stay together with all the pain and tension that entailed. It led to very emotionally charged performances that the fans could not get enough of.
HOW can you get the title of this album wrong when it written in front of you in the video? The title is "RUMOURS" -0 it has a U in it after the O - look at the cover.
Lindsey Buckingham lead vocals, all guitars, Stevie Nicks lead vocals, Christine McVie lead vocals organ synth piano, John McVie bass guitar, Mick Fleetwood drums and percussion. Incredible line up of artists and musicians!! Rachel, your comments on picking out different instruments and sounds was right on as usual. Love your reactions!👍😊
I like when you comment on the vocals. The instrumentation and production are excellent on this album, but in my opinion it's the vocals that make it exceptional. So much feeling and expression.
"The Chain" In spite of how you felt about the way the music feels, the vocals are what makes that songs with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks and then Cristine McVee coming in behind them and it's pure magic. But the lyrics are everything because that's why the song feels the way it does.
John, this two-part video was my first view of this channel. I agree with you. Verdy seems to be sweet and has an excellent ear for music. I hope with experience she will acquire more confidence and comprehension of English song lyrics so she can react to the meanings of lyrics as well as to the music.
That’s Christine McVie on lead vocals on “Oh Daddy” and “You Make Loving Fun.” Her songs always bring the soul to this band. Stevie and Lindsey get all the credit, but she’s fantastic as well.
On "Silver Springs", "Dreams" and maybe "I Don't Want To Know" Stevie Nicks is singing about Lindsey Buckingham the lead guitarist. They had a nasty breakup right before they started recording this album. On "Go Your Own Way", "Never Going Back" and maybe "Second Hand News" Lindsey Buckingham is singing about Stevie Nicks.
Now you know why a few of the songs off this album were on your mom's playlist. As someone else stated, the production level on this album is one of the best.
The sound at the beginning of Silver Spring is a guitar. He's got it running through a volume pedal and he's doing swells with it (slowly rocking it up and down). It might also be done with the volume knob on the guitar.
"Accordion" in English. But those really sound like volume swells on the guitar to me. It's kind of an art unto itself and its highly useful. You basically start with the volume knob all the way down and you rest your pinky finger on it and then you do whatever it is you're going to do on the guitar, hit a note or a chord or even bend a string to get haunting bird-like echo effects. But then you strike the strings and then right after you strike them you use your pinky finger to roll the volume knob up and you create this immediate volume swell that you have complete control over and it makes it sound like a completely different instrument. It's really fun. There are many classic examples of this but one of my absolute favorites is in the Rush song La Villa Strangiato, and it is how Alex Lifeson opens the first of two iconic guitar solos on that masterpiece instrumental from the album Hemispheres. Adrian Belew made really creative use of them as well.
Christine McVie (keyboard/vocals) wrote you make loving fun about the bands lighting technician whom she was dating after she left her husband Fleetwood Mac's bassist John McVie.
For more of that western feel + great harmonies + great guitars, I really recommend the album DESPERADO (1973) by EAGLES. The whole album is like one connected cowboy story with lots of recurring themes, and brilliant writing and playing. I think you'd like it.
‘You Make Loving Fun’ (my favourite song on Rumours) is track 8 and follows ‘The Chain’ in the original running order of the album. On the original LP vinyl album release; it is the second track on side two.
My mother had this on 8 track when I was kid. She wore it out at least 2 or 3 times. One of the best albums of all time. Interestingly though, as upbeat as many of the songs are, the lyrics to several are actually pretty dark.
„And If you don‘t love me now you will never love me again - I can still hear you saying we will never break the chain“ Written by Stevie Nicks after her breakup with Lindsey Buckingham. The „chain“ is the band Fleetwood Mac that ties them together. The singers are …. Lindsey and Stevie. Imagine singing a song about a breakup with your ex every night on every tour for like 40 years. Brutal.
I love how she said the song. I don't want to know had such happy vibes. She obviously doesn't listen to the lyrics, just the melody and the music. I love it.
On Silver Spring, you were right about it being a guitar, the sort of accordion fade-in sound. The guitarist was likely using a volume pedal or the knobs on the guitar, played a chord at no volume, then slowly turned it up. It's a great effect.
The BBC used the latter part of The Chain, where the heavy bass line comes in, for the theme tune for their Formula 1 racing on TV. It has such a racy feel to it and a thrill that gets adrenalin going. Oh Daddy is a wonderful song sung by Christine McVie and John Mvcie's bass line is really exceptional.
I remember when me and my Bro were kids, we kept going on about how brilliant the F1 title music was, so Dad pulled Rumours out and played it to us LOUD! It was a revelation to discover that it was actually from a band.
You’re right. And even though some songs may seem joyous, it really isn’t the case. The recording sessions for this album are some of, if not the most difficult recording sessions ever!
In the bad old days of vinyl, Silver Springs was omitted from the final Rumours album cut. The only way to get it was as a 45 RPM B side, making it a underground hit that you only ever heard on alternative or college radio stations. 1997's The Dance finally brought it into the mainstream (syndicated radio stations played the live version extensively, which most people erroneously thought was a new reunion song).
Lucky Luke! Although I grew up in the US, I was born in Italy. I still remember reading Lucky Luke and Asterix the Gaul! If you like that "western" feel of The Chain and Gold Dust Woman, you might enjoy the earlier albums of The Eagles (The Eagles, Desperado, On the Border and One of These Nights) Cheers!
The Far West. That is absolutely hilarious. At first I thought you were trying to find the English word for Comics. Or comic book. Or graphic novel. But then I got the cowboy reference and it's funny because that kind of West is definitely west of me where I live in Kansas, and so it would be very far west for you, but I think the phrase you may be thinking of his the Old West. The Old West is not only a geographic area that changed over time. It is an era in time of lawlessness and the frontier and the beginnings of law and order in some of these really outpost areas.
This is, in my opinion, the greatest album made. Not a bad song on it. Most bands are lucky to have one good singer. These guys had three. I loved seeing your reaction and how moved you were by what you heard. Forty years after my first listening, I still get chills.
Ms Verdy, after Silver Springs..Live, reunion show The dance..follow up with the song Bleed to Love her, and watch the eye contact between Christie Mcvie, the keyboardist..and unsung writer musician of the Mac..they loved each other as much as Stevie and Lindsey.. Great performance!
I love how you love this album. I did actually react to this the same way when I first listened to it. I just had to relisten to all the parts again and again. You clearly have fun listening to all those albums. Another flawless album you should check out is "Never For Ever" by Kate Bush. She is so weird and strange and the band that plays in her songs uses so many rare and cool instruments that I promise you it's something you have never heard. It's really unique. Or maybe an equally great album, but much heavier and something I didn't see anyone on youtube react to so far is "White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity" by SWANS. It's gothic rock with folk influences, so there are a lot of acoustic guitars. The whole album is very dark, but there are a few happy songs on it and also a few calm songs as well. They have a singer with a very deep voice and a female singer with a really beautiful voice, so the album is so good because of the contrasts of light and dark. But it's not for everyone. Think about it like a darker, heavier, wilder version of Foxtrot by Genesis, just with shorter tracks...In fact, every Swans album is different and all are great, but this is comparably easy to listen to if you look at their other work. But I can understand if you don't like it and decide not to react to it.... I also like this format that you listen to whole album sides. That's cool for you, but also for us because we can also see the whole reaction and listen to the whole album. If I might recommend a third album ( I know, many recommendations...) I would recommend you "Dionysus" by Dead Can Dance. It would fit this format perfectly, because the album has two sides, but each side is just one long song - just like Supper's Ready. However, the band doesn't sound like normal rock music at all. I would describe them as fantasy music, like something you would hear in a video game...They're cool and there are many cool instruments to discover. The only thing you shouldn't expect are lyrics. They sing, but they sing in an own invented fantasy language, so no-one can understand what they sing. It's beautiful still.
I second that! Kate is getting a lot of resurgence lately because of Netflix's Stranger Things using her song "Running up that Hill" this season. Speaking of which, Hounds of Love is also a great album
@@jefffiore7869 Oh, yeah, now that you say it I should have recommended this album instead of Never For Ever, because it's not better (I love all her albums equally except her debut which I think is just great, not excellent), but more accessible.
@@leonardsimonis2376 The Kick Inside was just the start for her. as she took control, she got better. Wuthering heights made her an international star except in the USA which is why I got into her with her 5th album, Hounds Of Love, that is the album that broke through in America
@@jefffiore7869 I know and I don't judge her for it. I just like the other albums more. I believe that Lionheart & Never For Ever are the albums The Kick Inside could have been if her record company would have let her. They didn't want her to release "Wuthering Heights" as the single for the album, because they thought it was too strange and bizarre to sell well. I assume they also didn't allow all of Kates artistry to fully come out and shine on this record, because again they thought it wouldn't sell. However, Kate proved them wrong with Wuthering Heights. Since then, they somewhat resigned and she could do more or less what she wanted. I believe that her first two records aren't fully perfect even in Kates view, because she had to deliver them under pressure (the first under the pressure of her company regarding creativity, and the second under time pressure). Didn't she even write in the liner notes to Never For Ever that this was the first record that came together just as she wanted it do be? I think there the albums started to become masterpieces.
@@leonardsimonis2376 What I find strange is that they allowed her to develop herself musically before recording then tried to control her. Wuthering Heights was the right choice for a first single, it IS "strange and bizarre" which is why it was a hit. Yea, Lion Heart was released the same year as The Kick Inside because the record label wanted to capitalize on her success. Never For Ever was her first album where she was in complete control and it really showed!!! Took two years to make, she took her time until it was exactly how she wanted it. From then on, That album and every subsequent album is a masterpiece
_GREAT_ reaction! It's so fun watching you react, b/c you really seem to appreciate good music. It shows in your smiles 😃and facial expressions😏. I have a few suggestions for album reactions: 1. "News of the World" by Queen. I know you've heard "We Will Rock You". _EVERYBODY_ has. You'd really have to be living under the proverbial rock if you haven't, and you don't look like a rock dweller,🤣 so....anyway, the rest of the album is fan-bleeping-tastic. 2. "Moving Pictures" by Rush. Probably my all-time favorite album. 3 of the best musicians at their chosen instrument. Geddy Lee on bass. Neil Peart on drums and Alex Lifeson on guitar. 3. "Boston" by Boston (of course) _THE_ best debut album ever.(IMO) 4. "Van Halen" by you guessed it, Van Halen. Another incredible debut album. BTW, if you love great harmonies, you'd love the Eagles. They sound just as good live, like Fleetwood Mac does, as they do in studio. Check out "7 Bridges Road" and you'll see (or hear👂) what I mean.
Ms Verdy, now that you've heard the studio version, please react to their reunion , early 90s ..titled ..The dance, and react to this song..live. So much water under bridge between Lindsey, and Stevie..and watch their eye contact during this amazing song!!
Just now saw this & enjoy your reaction. As has been said many times, "Silver Springs" wasn't on here & "You Make Loving Fun" comes on after "The Chain". "Silver Springs" is a great song, but listening to the entirety of the album in the way it was originally released & how most humans have experienced & know it, the form in which it won so many awards, is worth it. The song order does matter & there's a balance of dark & light. It's one of the rare albums in which every song is good & works together as a cohesive whole, which you can put on & just let it play the whole way through, without skipping songs. I'm sure you'll be listening to the album from here on out, if you're like the millions of people who've been doing so since it came out! Great art never dies. I always go back to it one way or another my whole life, even though I've heard it a million times & know it like the back of my hand.
Ha! it is accordion in English as well. That sound is the guitar - it sounds like he's using a slide, especially later in the song (the wave sound). The beginning of Silver Spring is all guitar and bass then a piano comes in. Lindsey plays a very unusual guitar in that it's part acoustic/part electric, so he can make a lot of different sounds with it. Something to understand about Fleetwood Mac is there are 3 main songwriters: Christine McVie, who plays keyboards/piano; Stevie Nicks, who is primarily a vocalist; and Lindsey Buckingham on guitar, and as far as I know, they always sang their own compositions. When they joined the band, Stevie and Lindsey were a couple, as were Christine and John McVie (bass). So if Stevie is on vocals, it's going to have a lot more guitar, as will Lindsey's songs, but if Christine is singing, it will be a lot of keyboard/piano with some guitar mixed in. To the best of my knowledge they didn't use any guest musicians or unusual instruments on these early albums. Later on they would bring touring musicians to fill in the parts that were overdubbed in the studio (multiple guitar tracks, for example). Just to add: Lindsey arranged all of their songs in the studio, so they always had guitars pretty prominent in the mix - Oh Daddy is a great example.
Volume swells is the effect. He is turning the guitar volume down, picks a note, turns up the volume, turns the volume back down, picks the next note, and volume up again, etc. I love that effect. You can use the knob on the guitar,or there is a foot pedal that controls the volume as you rock your foot forward and back. Fantastic.
Rumours is one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time. There's no filler on it; every song is good enough to have been released as a single, and you hear all of them on the radio to this day. That said, it's amazing the band was able to put this album together, given that the inspiration for most of these songs were things that would have had other people at each other's throats. Seriously, it's incredible they were able to cohere as a band, given how dysfunctional their personal relationships were. When you learn what the inspiration for some of these songs were, you wonder that they didn't quit the band and cut the other members out of their lives. "You Make Loving Fun," is a song Christine McVie wrote about an an extramarital lover she had, cheating on her husband, bassist John McVie, and "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow" was her telling him "I'm leaving you, get over it." "I Don't Want to Know," and "Silver Springs" were Stevie Nicks' songs about being unable to maintain a healthy relationship with her then-lover Lindsey Buckingham, and "Go Your Own Way" was his song about being unable to do it with her. "Never Going Back Again," was Buckingham's ode to a regretful rebound hookup after he and Nicks finally broke it off for good. The band members may have emotionally damaged each other in ways that are mind-boggling to most people, but they sure did manage to produce some great art from all of it.
New subscriber. Loved seeing your reactions to the top hits of the month during the 80's and 90's. But when you pulled out those "Lucky Luke" books that sealed the deal for me subscribing to you. I loved Lucky Luke as a kid, but since I lived in the States I didn't know anyone else who knew about him. Seeing you with that book brought such a big smile to my face. 😊
Ha ha! Thank god! I know I'm getting forgetful in my old age but couldn't work out how I could've completely forgotten an entire song off an album I've listened to so often.
"Being face to face with someone thats far away and youre ready to grab your gun." I think Stevie Nicks would agree with this interpretation. The song is about her deteriorating relationship with her fellow band member, Lindsey Buckingham, who is sharing vocals on this track as well.
In ‘The Chain’, that is not a banjo in the left channel; but rather, a dobro or wood-bodied, single-cone resonator guitar played by Lindsey Buckingham, which sounds brighter and more percussive than a regular acoustic guitar.
Christine McVie doesn't get enough credit for her contributions to the band IMO she's awesome 😍🤘✌♥️
Say hello to Stevie Nicks, the second best female vocalist in Fleetwood Mac
@@unveuunion2805 - Yeah no... The end of “the Chain” is one of my all time favorite “crescendo” song parts. The bass setting it up, the drums taking it over and the “angry guitar” finishing; it’s just “washing over you”.
That bass break is absolutely iconic.

My favorite song on the album
I just want to applaud your fans. Usually when I comment with some bit of trivia (because I am an old coot) it just sits there. However with part one I mentioned the previous incarnations of Fleetwood Mac and received so many replies from others I was amazed. Stevie and Lindsey first album Buckingham and Nicks is one for acoustic guitar lovers and should be reviewed. My only complaint with this iteration of Fleetwood Mac is the diminished roll Christine McVie played as I still love her sultry voicing and songwriting acumen. Still the music is fantastic and fueled my life for years.
That Christine Perfect record, with Danny Kirwan and John McVie on it, is well worth seeking out, it’s like a blueprint for what was to come.
She brought the soul to the group.
From one Old coot to another..🥃...cheers!
@@johnathanstruble1064 Cheers!
Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on bass are one of the greatest rythm sections ever. And hence the band's name. Really enjoyed your reaction.
Agree. I believe the original release was better and Silver Springs was truly effective as a concert favourite
I agree with you completely.
"You Make Loving Fun" - written for her fling with one of the crew. I hear John McVie thought it was about him, lol
This album sold over 40 million copies. One of the top selling records of all time.
The live version on The Dance album was nominated for a Grammy in 1998 but didn't win. Great song!
Yeah it's a shame it was left off the original album, Stevie was devastated when it was left off but they added it as a b-side to the Go Your Own Way single back in 77.
@@BlinDefender yes the live version of Silver Springs from the dance in 97 is amazing, the chemistry and tension between Stevie and Lindsay is heavy!!
So that's why I didnt remember Silver Springs being on the album. I thought I was having an old man moment.
Thx. Always a big pleasure to watch your honest reactions. Keep it up.
Fleetwood Mac for me is a very rare merge between 3 English musicians:
Drums (Fleetwood), bass and the English vocal girl with keyboards, and
the American couple: Guitar/male song and female song.
In a top 10 of all time greatest albums, this is definitely in there.
And I am a hard rock guy (Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and modern Måneskin),
but this pop album is feel good, weak lyrics, but insanely good, with
no bad songs, only masterpieces, blending English an American
music in the early 70's.
I really love your reactions, Verdy, because you're such a great close listener. You really hear the nuance and all the parts of the music.
It is one of the finest albums ever. Every track is excellent.
Agreed!!
silver spring is especially good live, the visible chemistry between lindsay and stevie is amazing
@@daveheesen9174 The way she stares at him throughout the song
I love that this band is named after the rhythm section! Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on bass.
Yup. Peter Green actually named it that before John McVie joined, just to encourage him to do so.

Always enjoy your reactions - look forward to what's next , how ever long it may take . be safe
Verdy good reaction. Merci. 🤗
@@PeckiePeck Yeah, I'm not super knowledgeable about their history.
McVie's "Say You Love Me" is best from the Mac's eponymously-titled album that immediately preceded Rumours) ---v. pleased that you didn't get cheated of it👍
Millions of Gen Xers now aged 50+ grew up in a household with a copy of this record to be found in Mom and/or Dad's collection, and these reax were easy to enjoy...somehow reminded me of the last time that I was in 🇨🇦, listening to a classic rock station on a summer afternoon drive from Montréal to Québec (terre de mes 🇮🇪 aïeux), with all of the familiar lyrics of course in English and the presenter/DJ speaking between songs en français ---not at all typical stuff to me!
Sounds like Lindsey howling in the background to me.
Stevie would do some weird groans at concerts back then too like she was possessed, so it could be her doing the groans while he is howling.
I watched that making of Rumours too on Amazon and when it got to that part he (Lindsey) started laughing and said "wow I don't know what that was we were obviously in a dark place at the time" lol
It's actually not a guitar. You can hear her screams better in this version ua-cam.com/video/Xqn6SMhzmf4/v-deo.html
Stevie said that she wanted those screams to sound like a lonely wolf at night howling at the moon or something. I think she quite reached that goal.
I really enjoy watching new people discover great music I knew when it was released , almost like redicovering the music myself , good chanel Verdy .
And the name of the song came from a town called Silver Spring in Maryland.
Yep. They chose Gold Dust Woman, instead. Personally, I would have gone with Silver Springs.

Christine McVie is my favorite member of the band and I think they’re all great
Rumors was one of the first albums to assemble music track on track.
Good stuff on the B side. How about that Verdy! Fleetwood Mac is timeless! 👍👍❤️
+Delightful..and the music's good too. Thanks for sharing your sensitivities and insights.
"Silver Springs" is one of my favs live off their album "The Dance".
My mother had this on 8 track when I was kid. She wore it out at least 2 or 3 times. One of the best albums of all time. Interestingly though, as upbeat as many of the songs are, the lyrics to several are actually pretty dark.
„And If you don‘t love me now you will never love me again - I can still hear you saying we will never break the chain“
Written by Stevie Nicks after her breakup with Lindsey Buckingham.
I love it.
Epic reaction Ms Verdy!
On Silver Spring, you were right about it being a guitar, the sort of accordion fade-in sound. The guitarist was likely using a volume pedal or the knobs on the guitar, played a chord at no volume, then slowly turned it up. It's a great effect.
Rumours is the 8th bestselling album of all-time. The album is perfect!
Speaking of Formula 1, The Chain was also used for the John Player Special Lotus ad. Awesome add, and awesome looking car.
I remember when me and my Bro were kids, we kept going on about how brilliant the F1 title music was, so Dad pulled Rumours out and played it to us LOUD! It was a revelation to discover that it was actually from a band.
This album was about relationships breaking up within the band. They are speaking to one another on the songs.
Gold dust woman is Stevie Nick's with backing vocals from Lyndsay Buckingham and Christine Mcvie.
Lucky Luke! Although I grew up in the US, I was born in Italy. I still remember reading Lucky Luke and Asterix the Gaul!
If you like that "western" feel of The Chain and Gold Dust Woman, you might enjoy the earlier albums of The Eagles (The Eagles, Desperado, On the Border and One of These Nights)
Cheers!
Five star reaction and extra credit for picking the best version!!!
The banjo sound you're hearing on "The Chain" is actually a dobro guitar.

That twangy sound on "You Make Loving Fun" is actually Christine playing her keyboard, but it sounds sooo much like a bass guitar.
_GREAT_ reaction! It's so fun watching you react, b/c you really seem to appreciate good music. It shows in your smiles 😃and facial expressions😏. I have a few suggestions for album reactions:

2. "Moving Pictures" by Rush. Probably my all-time favorite album. 3 of the best musicians at their chosen instrument. Geddy Lee on bass. Neil Peart on drums and Alex Lifeson on guitar.
3. "Boston" by Boston (of course) _THE_ best debut album ever.(IMO)
In "The Chain," that bass solo just slays me every time.

Verdy Channel. A positive influence on my life.
Ha! it is accordion in English as well.
Fantastic.
Saw them live in concert in 1972 Along with Deep Purple and ELF. What a concert that was.
The feeling you were trying to describe during the song ( the chain) in English is called a showdown.🙂
You are so fun to watch
New subscriber. Loved seeing your reactions to the top hits of the month during the 80's and 90's. But when you pulled out those "Lucky Luke" books that sealed the deal for me subscribing to you. I loved Lucky Luke as a kid, but since I lived in the States I didn't know anyone else who knew about him. Seeing you with that book brought such a big smile to my face. 😊
Grew up in Sweden in the 80's and loved Lucky Luke aswell :)
Silver Spring wasn't on the original album and was a B side. Many reissues have added to the running order.
Yes, didn't recognise this one.
Yeah I was confused for a minute. Seems like it was added in a 2004 remastered reissue.
I thought The Chain was starting weirdly!
Ha ha! Thank god! I know I'm getting forgetful in my old age but couldn't work out how I could've completely forgotten an entire song off an album I've listened to so often.
@@thepawsofdeception6564 I think it's catchy.
VERDY "makes loving FUN!", Well Done! Merci.
Thank's for the fun!!!!!😋
"Being face to face with someone thats far away and youre ready to grab your gun."
I think Stevie Nicks would agree with this interpretation. The song is about her deteriorating relationship with her fellow band member, Lindsey Buckingham, who is sharing vocals on this track as well.
When asked at the time by Rolling Stone what the recording process was like, Christine McVie replied, "Drama. Dra-/ma/."
Fun fact, the guitar solo at the end of The Chain was used as the programme music for British TV coverage of Formula 1 motor racing.
Can't help myself... You Make Loving Fun's funky groove is achieved by the interaction of the bass guitar and the clavinette.
I met Mick Fleetwood back in 1995 and Chuck Berry in 1998 and have never been so impressed with any musicians in my life and I've met lots of them.
This song list was out of order, the albums ends with "Gold Dust Woman" and it leaves you with a totally different feeling. Song order matters.
That "dirty but dirty good", is the best line ever! Thanks
Oh Damn, just how I felt the first time I heard this album.
In ‘The Chain’, that is not a banjo in the left channel; but rather, a dobro or wood-bodied, single-cone resonator guitar played by Lindsey Buckingham, which sounds brighter and more percussive than a regular acoustic guitar.
You have a great show.Love your work.I believe this album was in Billboard's Top 200 for over 9 years. Good choice.
There are live performances of most of these songs on youtube from "The Dance" concert video.
