Gable losing that match to Reed is absolutely the right decision. Gable just continuing to plough through competition, get another shot at Gunther 3 weeks later and then somehow he got better than Gunther in just those 3 weeks is unbelievable and poor storytelling. Getting beat by Bronson Reed is not embarrassing, it means that Gable has to spend more time getting better and winning matches in order to justify his rematch with Gunther that will probably happen a couple more months down the line, that's a good story to tell. Also it's clear they wanna do Ciampa vs Gunther at Fastlane, so they have to have Gable lose in order to keep him out of the title picture while Ciampa has his shot.
The Chad Gable storyline isnt being delayed or anything of the sort, its still ongoing. Gable himself said that "eventually" he was gonna beat Gunther. They're giving this story time - and Gable is almost definitely winning the belt, eventually, as he said. In the meantime, however, they can give other wrestlers the spotlight whilst they let Gables star rise and continue to garner support even further given how naturally talented he is. It feels like Gables character is going on an arc, a journey to where he'll finally be ready to dethrone Gunther.
