This video just shaved 2 seconds off my pace. Last night I was practicing GT3 at Virginia for the first time this week and was able to manage a 1:48.8 after about an hour and half. I watched this video and just jump into a practice session for the first time since last night and by lap 16 I managed a 1:46.7. I’m blown away cause I always knew trail braking was my weakest skill but really didn’t believe it would be that big of a difference maker. I have to replicate this tomorrow to be sure but Suellio, you seriously just put a confidence in me I haven’t had my whole sim racing career. Thank you 🙏🏾
@SuellioAlmeida This is crazy. I was training at Zandvoort with the Ferrari 296 GT3 in IRacing. I tried an online race and was 12th at qualify. Then I tried this trail braking technic to turn initially with the pedals and not with the steering wheel for about 2 days. I'm really far to master it all, but I could qualify first being about 2 sec faster. That's crazy. I thought I was trail braking already, I understood that the objective is to keep the weight on the front tires to have more grip. That's so described everywhere in books and on Internet. But if we don't apply what you explain, it cannot be effective. Why are there so many driving tuto's, but nobody explains so precisely like you what we have to do? Thank you so much!!
Coaching is difficult. People think driving fast is enough for you to coach others, but that is so far from the truth. I'm able to explain things this way because I coached 2k+ people and I was always taking notes and analyzing what worked and what didn't, what steps were necessary, etc etc etc etc!
I’ve just started IRacing because of your videos. I had no issue getting top laptimes on acc with my potentiometer pedals but on IRacing as trail breaking is a lot more important I’ve definitely noticed that it’s nearly impossible to get consistent… so yep.. load cell and cockpit are on the way 😂 This video is obviously going to help massively too. Thanks Suellio!
Ok so, on Iracing Mugello track my best laptime 1:49.800 got it once with lot of focus and effort. My average lap time is 1:53.ish, I am very inconsistent. I watched this video and after 10 min of driving, I am not getting more than 1:51.00! I watched a lot of videos on trail braking, and never got it, simply because no one explains the why! This man here and Driver 61 are the only I am watching from now on. They care about the community and helping races to get better and freaking deliver in 5 min FREE video unlike lot of others who cares only to show us how good they are and get viewers! I dont care from where I need to go to hit the apex, I want to know how I can hit it. This guy nailed it! Sub sub! 2 years on sim racing, you just unlocked me whole different world!
Looks like i was on the right track! Thanks man was so so easy to uncorporate the rest. You helped me with 1 video a while back shwoing that one guy how to rotate the car with brakes even making him lose grip so he understood how to actually use the brakes to turn the car in more then even the wheel. That one video helped me so so much. So now this was the rest I needed!
This video is AMAZING! I have watched so many trail braking videos because I always feel like my attempts have been, not slower than my normal turning but not up to what I should be able to do. Watching this has taught me so much, part of it is my setup physically in person, and part is braking later than I should be, Thank You for this video. It's exactly what I needed to improve:)
Thanks so much, after 3 years of sim racing Ive finally decided to turn off ABS and just did my first lap without locking up, 6 TENTHS FASTER and my lines were all over the place 👍👍 cheers
If I may add: This whole thing with turning in earlier gently and giving the car time to load up the outside wheels can be practiced IRL very well in road cars that roll quite a bit. It just gives you a very pronounced understanding of the difference between introducing the car into the corner gently vs chucking it in and unsettling it. If you're in the sim in a agile, stiffly sprung race car the difference can be to subtle to really appreciate.
Nice and concise video, thank you ! One question about grip though, i believe self aligning torque maxes before the grip. My interpretation is that 'fishing the grip' relies on getting a precise feel of SAT just starting to drop without understeer. These few degrees of steering that 'pin' the front enabling a small oversteer mid corner to exit earlier. Some pilots have this spectacular 'fighting' style on the limit, 'dancing' with the pedals also to push the car on the limit. It's not clean but it seems as efficient. I'd really like to have your views on that.
Hello @Suellio and all. When starting to practice trail braking (ACC 1.98 BMW M4) would it be a good idea to turn off ABS completely? I'm thinking to get a better feel for the load cell pedal to begin with?
I started playing Forza motorsport again after a number of years. I drive on a logitech 29. I decided to set a time on circuit de la Sartre which was a 4:22. You help me shave off 11 1/2 seconds.
Great explanation. Would be interested to hear your thoughts about gear selection and speed of downshifting into corners. I observe the faster Esport drivers use a gear higher than I do but when I try that, I struggle to get the car turned and rotated into the apex and tend to understeer a lot i.e. lower gears help me get the car rotated with the additional engine braking but then I find I lose a lot on exit (and my lowest corner speed is probably a lot lower). This is on F1 23.
Amazing as always, amazing you give us this gem for free as well, makes me want to be your client I can use a lot of improvement for now my main focus is clean racing and side by side driving in races don't really seek alien pace, but as soon as I do I will surely try to book a session with a simracing guru as you, can't wait to jump into practice with this video info.
Awesome vid! I was just thinking this week about finding a video about trailbraking and was going to see if you had one 😅 Question: do you still start to turn in slowly in high downforce cars(formula cars)? because I know from your videos that in those cars the steering input should be more linear
Interesting how you mentioned that GT3 cars with insanely effective ABS systems will make the curve different. That shows how braking in ACC basically is and why the brake inputs are different from those in iRacing
This is easily the best trail braking video I’ve seen. Getting down into the brake settings was huge. I was definitely not giving 50% brake pressure because of my settings. Any tips for relaxing in a turn? I find that I tense up majority into braking zones and turns. I wasn’t conscious of it until I tried using the soft hands technique.
I have now a steering wheel in the wishlist. When it got into an sale, i buy it, try this technique to get spin out on the first corner. I will hate it and hopefully be better after some time. (Old one died a year ago)
Hi,thanks for your videos.can you explain neutral steer and 4 wheel slide (if it's possible on slick) while trail braking with slick tires in karting, cause there is extension of outer arm and using side of body to load rear out tire.
I hope someone can answer this. When exactly do you start braking? I've seen a lot of these but can't figure that out. Before turning in or when you want the car to turn? And how much force at first.
I want to master this alongside using a manual H-pattern shifter. Should i do this with h-pattern or go with paddle shift first, then jump back to h-pattern later when trail braking has been mastered?
It was a very help full video. But can you make a video of game setting with the logitech G29 Wheel. Its little hard to set a perfect wheel setting i feel my Accelerator pedal is too sensitive and break pedal is also sensitive.
I saw in one of your videos, if you look towards the left of your monitor, you could see the car beside you. If you can, PLEASE tell me what your current monitor settings are in the game. I have similar setup to yours, I could use your settings to look at whats beside me...
I have a question? Do you think I need to get a better wheel and pedals?? . I'm not on that level but sometimes I think if I change the wheel I got better chance to go faster!! What you think??
Hi and thank you for your online lessons. I have a thrustmaster tx with the t3pa pro pedals. any advice for Fanatec DD pro with CSL Loadcell pedalas? For example on suzuka i realy squeeze the stearing wheel and i cant relax my hands for example in first sector, and about that LC pedals what is the best setting to get the pedal linear? i have it on maybe 45% force but sometimes i think i still breaking but no i have break on 0% usage.
I can't figure out for the life of me where that sensitivity slider is at, which you would ensure is at 50%. Please help after 45 minutes I'm just frustrated figuring out where it's at.
GT cars are easier since they accept more pressure. F1 cars are more difficult (at least in some sims like iRacing) because they're ultra sensitive to lower pressures, so like 5% is enough to lock up the front tires while 1% would be ideal etc
i don't see a 'sensitivity' setting in the ghub pro pedals settings - can only set the force/weight... so set to 50KG, which is half. Is this what you mean?
por que você não faz videos em portugues? (why dont you make videos in portuguese?) I do understand english but other digital drivers dont so it would be a big help to them.
I like to go around the track and not let the cars gear go above the lap number. This way I start slow and add a bit more speed each lap. Look for braking points and racing lines while going slow
One of the things I learnt from suelio in another video is let the limit of grip take you to the track limits don't just drive out to them artificially because you think it's faster. When I practice new tracks I just go around slowly and learn the braking zones I pickup pace every lap trying to push myself to the track limit on exit.
Does any of this or for that matter do any of your tips apply to g920 users....I plan to upgrade to a thrust master soon with load cell pedals but I want to practice before then but I feel like I'm just handicapped but idk
I know this was a month ago and it does, it's just more difficult, he also specifies what settings make the G9-Series users should use compared to the load-cell users

trail braking has always put my head in a pretzel. i was sure i was already doing it because i'm extremely fast, but any time i consciously tried it, it would just feel like manually breathing to me.. and this video confirms my suspicions that it's just using the brakes to turn. i DO already do that. you should ALWAYS use the brakes to turn. there's an exception for everything, but the pedals are for turning. and so the term "trail braking" is silly. might as well have a term "trail throttling" where you use the throttle to turn on corner exit. BUT YOU SHOULD ALWAYS DO THAT TOO. i don't understand why there's a separate definition for "trail braking". i feel it is a more applicable term for AWD/FWD rally type driving where you might drag the brakes down a trail.

You can use trail braking to rotate the car mid corner if you got the feeling. Doesn't work on every track, corner, or car. Results can vary.
My wiggles at 1%, 25%, 50%, 99%. It’s harder to do then I thought

my problem is that i get to little rotation in the rear or lock up and spin

When do you anticipate your book coming out?
A few months 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Great video! What type of car you would suggest for practicing trail breaking?
GT cars are easier since they accept more pressure. F1 cars are more difficult (at least in some sims like iRacing) because they're ultra sensitive to lower pressures, so like 5% is enough to lock up the front tires while 1% would be ideal etc

trail braking has always put my head in a pretzel. i was sure i was already doing it because i'm extremely fast, but any time i consciously tried it, it would just feel like manually breathing to me.. and this video confirms my suspicions that it's just using the brakes to turn. i DO already do that. you should ALWAYS use the brakes to turn. there's an exception for everything, but the pedals are for turning. and so the term "trail braking" is silly. might as well have a term "trail throttling" where you use the throttle to turn on corner exit. BUT YOU SHOULD ALWAYS DO THAT TOO.
i don't understand why there's a separate definition for "trail braking". i feel it is a more applicable term for AWD/FWD rally type driving where you might drag the brakes down a trail.
