Cairo was a good town but now it is suffering from extreme neglect. If you keep going up 51 you will pass near a beautiful town named Dongola. That is where I live on 40 acres of farmland. My family has lived there for over 130 yrs. I love Southern Illinois. They are peaceful and friendly. I share your enthusiasm for history and culture. Thanks for sharing. Safe travels to you and Sadie ❤❤❤
Hi Carolyn hows it going...you love the radio shows on the Midwest ~ although, our Country is experiencing very dark times ...I agree with you and your not wearing the seatbelt...love from Humboldt County California 🌲 Bon
I love that you take the time to find the History of the places. So much history is lost - so thank you for keeping Cairo's story alive, at least for your following
Brought tears to my eyes. I’ve lived in the suburbs of Detroit. Similar, but newer story of decay. People are investing and restoring but with changes in auto industry and manufacturing, the area has changed substantially. Thanks for bringing the stories of American people and places. I really appreciate your perspective.
Carolyn, I just want to say how much I admire the way you are with Sadie. The fact that she listens to you explicity about going in that water says a lot about your relationship with her. You just talk to her with compassion and she gets it. No yelling, no drama. I know there have been naysayers over the years but f them! I'm more of a cat person myself (blasphemous, I know! 🤣) but even I can see how awesome Sadie is. She gets to live the life every dog dreams of and you've trained her incredibly well. She has freedom but with a constant safety net, her mom. It's heartwarming to see and I'm so so glad that she's feeling better.
This episode is what I dream of. I want to start traveling and just exploring this country. From small towns to wild open nature to big cities. I just want to see it all. Experience it all.
I am from Missouri (and live here now, although I have lived a lot of other places in between). Just wanted you to know that they only say Missour-ah north of the Missouri River. The rest of us say Missour-E.
I live in Central Kentucky and the station I used to listen to when I commuted to and from work would sometimes play the Top 40 countdown. Driving through Missouri the last time I went, noticed the roads were horrible. Signs on the interstate were barely readable. No infrastructure.
I certainly remember Casey Kasem. I listened every week and looked forward to it! Thank you for the link to the camping book. It's nice to see that people are trying to renovate these buildings.
I remember listening to Casey Kasem when I was a kid. Mum was a fan. We heard his show weekly on the radio. Dr Joyce Brothers too. Miss the regular radio shows. All this and more in Australia. 🇦🇺 ❤ your channel from here. 😁
About 36 minutes in, you say "I don't know if I could live in Missouri." I had to laugh. We have 75 acres adjacent to Mark Twain National Forest with Hercules Glade Wilderness right in the section about 3 miles from us. We can walk to it from our land without stepping on private property--so yeah, there are a lot of remote places still around down here. Tornadoes come though frequently but not in the hilly forested areas--just in the open areas. It does get hot and HUMID, but we also get a lot of rain and the other three seasons are mild to make up for summers. Land is cheap too. In fact we have a small 3.3 acre tract on our south border that we have been considering selling to the right person. It also is adjacent to miles of national forest on the east side. We're only asking $15,000 for it and it has access off a rural highway (no traffic) to make it easy to get in and out. If you ever feel like boondocking to check it out, let me know.
Carolyn, I really appreciate that you keep it real. I hope some of the old stories in Cairo can be preserved. Wishing you beauty, peace and safe travels.
I know I say it every time but thank you for always sharing your life journey on the highways and off the beaten paths of little jewels like this town. And thanks for voice over of it. It makes it so much nicer if watching at 2.0 and having to stop to read. LOL P.S. Loved the facial expressions in the beginning as I was joining you.
You were sure taking me down some more 'Memory Lanes' today! (I've commented before that I spent my teens and some 20s in Western Kentucky.) My stepdad was a well-known riverboat pilot all up and down the Ohio and Mississippi. The boat pushing the barges is called a towboat, and the barges lashed together like that are collectively known as 'the tow'. When the barges are riding high in the water, they're usually 'empties'. Barges ride lower in the water when they're loaded. The little boat riding alongside is a 'tugboat', and they can help guide them in a turn like that, as well as bring out loads of groceries for the crew, or even refuel them midstream. My step-dad had already piloted/captained for years, but when he decided to go in for his Master Pilot's license, he literally had to MAP the entire Mississippi River (and I'm thinking probably the Ohio and others, too) in a detailed topographical drawing, showing every deepwater channel, sandbar, shallow spot, etc. He showed us kids how to "read the water" for currents, snags, channels, etc. When there were difficult jobs to pilot through, he was "that guy you call", like you were talking about. And, it looks like you got an eyeful of Cairo, all right. (Pronounce 'Kay-row' by the locals.) Such a shame so much was left to ruin, but good to hear some are trying to restore some of what's left. If you go back through Mayfield to Paducah, then cross into Illinois there, Southern Illinois from there north is really beautiful, especially this time of year around sunset. Oh, and yes, I used to catch that Casey Kasum Countdown show on Sunday afternoons, heading back from Paducah to Memphis. You can trip over some really interesting stuff around those parts, for sure. Enjoyed this video! 😊
Awesome video , I love the small towns and the History that you always give on them. I sure do remember Casey Kasem and the top 40! Safe travels to you and Sadie!
Yes! Every Sunday. Kasey Kasem. We road tge beaches in south Texas. Or recorded it on our cassette players. To listen all week to the top 40!! Loved it!
Very interesting info on Cairo, Illinois! Love the old building! You find the most interesting places, thanks for taking us along! Safe travels to you and Sadie! 😄🍂💙🍁
I listen to a radio station that plays reruns of American Top Forty on the weekends. I also went to a Henry Winkler book signing (he rights children's books)...and had it all figured out what I was going to say to him, only to be completely dumb struck when I reached him and went completely brain dead. I did ask him if I could hug him and he said yes. So I hugged Henry Winkler!! 😁 He is a super sweet guy. I have pictures too...but I felt like such an ass for going brain dead.🤦 I'd probably go brain dead if I met you too. Excellent video Carolyn! 👍😁
This was a great video. I loved every minute of it. That was crazy all of the information you provided on Cairo. It didn’t always look like that. I have traveled through there years ago and it was a little run down but nothing compared to what it is today. Thank you for the update on my own home state as I probably would not have gone through there myself. it was awesome. ✌️❤️🤗
I remember listening to Casey Kasem. I love hearing the bits of history you add. My main person I listen to for true crime is Annie Elise 10- Life on UA-cam but she has a podcast called Serialously with Annie Elise. She is very thorough with her research. Cant wait for the next video. Safe travels.
Illinois is corrupt, and very violent. 6,356 shootings. The feeling your feelings is real. I'm 40 miles west of Quincy Illinois. I live in LaBelle Missouri which is in north east Missouri
Carolyn, once again, you crack me up! I'm so glad I don't have to listen to that in Washington State. Keep on truckin gal! Watching the crumbling of Illinois reminds me of the quote; You reap what you sow. Glad to see someone is attempting to make things better.
I went to summer camp in the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois for a number of years during my childhood. They were some of my best childhood memories. These experiences taught me a love of Nature that I still hold dear today.
Bahhhh hahhhh. That radio station. I am a trucker, longhaul, midwest and Great Lakes. My company offered me Sirrius radio with my company Freightliner. I was like, yes please. My four favorite radio stations are: Lithium 90s grunge, First Wave 80s underground and punk, the Bridge soft 70s, and Classic vinyl which is exactly that 60s, 70s rock. Radio? No thanks. Although in my early trucking career, 2000 forward, I would follow NPR, PRI, and BBC at night from state to state. Always enjoyed bluegrass in KY. Never missed A Prairie Home Companion, unless out of range. But yeah, would come across ole timey preachers in the south alot. Would just break out my music cassette tapes or books on tape back then. Yeah, we used to be able to rent books on tape at truck stops and just return them at the next truck stop and man did I spend a lot of money on audio books back in the day before we had internet and cell phones in our trucks. Lol. Safe travels.
Love your show. I have been watching for years. From Missouri and I called it Missouri. I just did that drive from Kentucky into Cairo and it definitely a huge difference. Take hwy 3 and enjoy a beautiful Illinois.
Go back and see that Cairo building in a few years and I’ll bet it will be beautiful! ✅ Glad you were able to get a tour inside! And Sadie too! 🐾. Take care and enjoy your travels! Until the next one…💕
That gutted me too. I’ve been searching for rescues in the area and didn’t see anything. The more I searched, Cairo police supposedly shoot strays or loose dogs as they have no resources to deal with animals. Being this is a month old, I hope somehow they got lucky😢
Hey, Carolyn! As a life-long Missouri resident (and I’m a senior citizen), it is pronounced with the “ee” sound on the end, NOT the “uh”. Miz-er-ee. We were even taught that in grade school in the 60’s.
Great history in that soon to be again Great city! The water ways and the barge was incredible. The tour of the couples newly bought house blew me away! Thanks for this vid.
I definitely remember Casey Kasem. I was an Air Force Brat and subsequently an Army wife that faithfully listened to him and Wolfman Jack on AFN Radio. Those were the days of my youth, dang I'm old. Lol 😁
I absolutely love watching your videos Carolyn ❤ as I live in England I appreciate through your eyes the wonder of America...somewhere I've always had a fascination with ❤ much love for you and Sadie xxx
Appreciate all the hard work you do to research and narrate about all the places. You could just show them and move on, but your videos make me feel like I am there with you. Every time you travel through Kansas, you only miss me by about 75 miles..😁
Really enjoyed this video!! Poplar Bluff is 2.5hrs south from my condo. But I'm still in MI. Spent 2mos in the UP and now almost 2mos near Detroit. Have decided to go back, put the condo up for sale and fulltime in my rv again.
Great video, consider a video like this showing the south suburbs of Chicago. Wonderful architecture and rich in history. Hurry though…. Much of the architecture is failing due to age and neglect. Such a travesty to see these population centers being taxed out of existence.
I like the way you were planning out your next stop using the corps of Engineering book. I bought this for my son. He has a RV Lance and lives out in Sacramento. Great video. Sadie is such an obedient dog. You are an amazing lady🎃🌻🕊
I remember Casey Kasum! Listened every week and journaled a list. I am deeply rooted Missourian, and we call it Missour-ee. Fun to see you in familiar to me places.
I was born and raised in Missouri. Beautiful state, Don't think I would want to live on that road lol. OMG Clearwater, such a gorgeous place, my Aunt and Uncle ran one of the bost docks, camp and little store. We went boating there a lot when I was very young, maybe 6 to 12 yrs. old. My Dad passed when I was 11 (53 yrs. ago). Great memories! Thank. He was born in Poplar Bluff.
Great video Carolyn! Love your content today as always. I just really love how you are with Sadie and how you talk to her. She makes you laugh and she knows it 😊 She listens so well to you. Your'e such a loving dog mom. The abandoned house was so cool and the tug boats! I discovered your videos about a year ago and have been hooked ever since! Thanks for sharing with us ❤️❤️
Casey Kasem was a fun radio listen for the top 40s. Demonic radio is around us, but has nothing to do with following the teachings of Christ, but how many Washington’s they can gather. Kentucky is an interesting place. Historically the most popular places are in Illinois. 😮
that large towboat with the barges was probably 1000 foot in length. The captain and the pilot will run the boat 24 hrs a day. A thousand foot plus is about a third of the towboat running the mississippi. The captain/pilot will train for a few years on different sections of the river and finally join a long haul company.I rode a large coal barge with Capt. Jonny Rose and Pilot James back in '79 from below New Orleans to Baton Rouge, they were in route to Cairo.
Hello, chatty, Cathy, lol. I know you don't talk politics on this channel, and I don't expect you to. I love my r.v families that I watch here, that's why I want to make sure you are all aware of what jd said during the debate. They are going to use government land to drill, drill, drill, and build housing. I love all the boondock locations you take me to. We can not lose them to these crazy politicians. Thanks for all your great advice. Safe travels.
That was awesome Carolyn….also I often go back and rewatch your Alaska adventure…loved it…from the scary screech owls to the salmon fishing…loved every episode 😍
Oh the history of Cairo, IL. I live in southern IL about an hour north. Cairo was such a booming city in it's day. When the 60's came around there were riots and everything went downhill from there. I'm sad you saw it that way. Good people live there and just shop elsewhere. If you would have crossed from KY to IL on I-24 you'd been in my little town of Metropolis! The Home of Superman! We have a casino and a beautiful state park. Several nice little shops but not many. I would have been honored to know you went through our town! Keep loving life Carolyn and be safe!
Melvern Lake and Clinton Lake in KS has a beautiful COE campground. There are also some great overnight campgrounds in many of the KS cities. I think there is a similar book to your COE book for cities. Usually cheap and some are free. I work/camp there in the summer. Also at 62 you can purchase a lifetime America The Beautiful pass that lets you camp 1/2 price at all COE campgrounds.
nice video today. Always have loved the history of the various locations and like you, lately I've been getting hooked on mysteries and true crime programs, (48 Hours and those stories). Also, enjoy the nice mix of music as you show the different scenes.
Great video. I grew up in a house built in 1883. Good bones. Renovation $$ is huge, too; on those $6000 homes. + permits.... I love seeing "your process of where you're going next"/planning next spot. That'd make for interested short vids. Enjoy the history of the town & and your amazing photography.
I love this. So many interesting historical stuff to see. Thank you for telling us the stories. And the nature you showed us was beautiful. I wish us humans took better care of nature and our beautiful world 🌎
Hi Carolyn, really enjoyed this video and not offended as an Illinoisan😊 For iOverlander I downloaded version 2. Then I downloaded 1 state’s map. When I tried to download a 2nd state, it requires you to pay for the premium version

I loved the different expressions on your face at the beginning while listening to the radio. Priceless!!❤😊
Don't know how you managed to listen as long as you did.
I had to laugh at your face while listening to that radio program. 🤣🤣 I’ve had that same face so many times.

I listened to Casey Kasem’s top 40 every Saturday and taped my favorite songs on cassette tapes.
I remember all of them things, hhhmmm wondering how many MIX Tapes did I make over the years.. heck I even recall Records
Thanks for being you, Carolyn ❤ you are a breath of sanity in my world
You are so welcome 😇🤪

Sadie is one good pup and listens so well. She wanted in the water so badly but she listened to Mom.
Hi Carolyn!
I have come to realize that when folks fly our American flag, they generally love our country ❤
YAY! Been waiting all week for this. Thanks Carolyn!! ~M
This episode is what I dream of. I want to start traveling and just exploring this country. From small towns to wild open nature to big cities. I just want to see it all. Experience it all.

Missouri is great place to live, love it SW Missouri Ozarks my home.
After 1:32, I had to Leave.
I'm from Australia 🇦🇺 & I remember Casey Kasem's Top 40 every Sunday night on local radio in Sydney. Loved it.
Welcome to Illinois. One of the highest taxed states of the USA.
High taxes and shitty roads. We drive St.Louis and the roads about jarred us to death.
Highest takes and not a ideal pick. I’ve lived in Chicago suburbs my entire life and it’s disgusting
California is the worst with high taxes
Carolyn, I really appreciate that you keep it real. I hope some of the old stories in Cairo can be preserved. Wishing you beauty, peace and safe travels.
I know I say it every time but thank you for always sharing your life journey on the highways and off the beaten paths of little jewels like this town. And thanks for voice over of it. It makes it so much nicer if watching at 2.0 and having to stop to read. LOL

This was wonderful to see this town and loved the building. What a great video have a great week. And thanks for bringing us all along.
Omg I’m dying at your reaction to this incoherent radio rant. 😂
Awesome video , I love the small towns and the History that you always give on them. I sure do remember Casey Kasem and the top 40! Safe travels to you and Sadie!
Remember Casey on radio. Yes every week.
Yes! Every Sunday. Kasey Kasem. We road tge beaches in south Texas. Or recorded it on our cassette players. To listen all week to the top 40!! Loved it!
Delightful, wonderful video......perfect blend of history and adventure...truly one of your best.....I was hooked.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very interesting info on Cairo, Illinois! Love the old building! You find the most interesting places, thanks for taking us along! Safe travels to you and Sadie! 😄🍂💙🍁
Thanks for watching
Sadie is so well behaved 🖤. Great video. Thank you.
I listen to a radio station that plays reruns of American Top Forty on the weekends. Hi Carolyn! Seeing how agast your expression, listening to that nonsense...I'm giggling at the hysterical guy spewing stuff. 😅
Illinois is corrupt, and very violent. 6,356 shootings. The feeling your feelings is real. I'm 40 miles west of Quincy Illinois. I live in LaBelle Missouri which is in north east Missouri

It’s heartbreaking to see these old buildings just rotting away.

many sections of the Shawnee National Forest in that area. Very cool.
You can still listen to Casey Kasey on Sirius radio every weekend
Your such an awesome story teller. Thanks for sharing, love yah Nancy
Aw, I appreciate that. Thank you for watching
Holy cow that tugcaptain was amazing.
I'm so glad that you're back Carolyn xoxo 😘
Back??? I've been hearing every week for 8 years
Dark history is a fun podcast with Bailey
I remember Casey Kasum! Listened every week and journaled a list. I am deeply rooted Missourian, and we call it Missour-ee. Fun to see you in familiar to me places.
I enjoyed witnessing your process of finding next stops.🦌💌👍
Thank you, Carolyn. I listened to Casey Kaysom? Every week as a younger person
I listened to the top 40 count down every Saturday, I made mixed tapes from that show off my ghetto blaster.. good times. 😊
I was born and raised in Missouri. Beautiful state, Don't think I would want to live on that road lol. The architecture is amazing in some of these places. So sad they never restored anything.
Poor abandoned dogs 😢
It's still America. You are entitled to your opinions.
Very fun & educatinal.
Thanks for sharing.
Great adventure you took us on. It was interesting thanks for another great video
You know whom I'm thinking of!
Ahhhh the good ole' days. Yes, I remember Warrior by Scandal ft. Patty Smyth. I had that on 45. Ha. That shows my age.😊
Thanks for sharing with us ❤️❤️
Great video! I love how you dig into the stories of these towns 😊. That boat was crazy... like a water train😂
Casey Kasem was a fun radio listen for the top 40s. Demonic radio is around us, but has nothing to do with following the teachings of Christ, but how many Washington’s they can gather. Kentucky is an interesting place. Historically the most popular places are in Illinois. 😮
Yes, I loved listening to Casey growing up and it was a fun flashback to hear it in my travels.
Thanks for your comment Stuart.
that large towboat with the barges was probably 1000 foot in length.
Thanks so much for sharing your life! Good editing skills!
Thanks for watching!
We won't get mad. IL is in a terrible state right now!!!! Taxes, jobs, everyone is leaving.
Jeeeeez, this abandoned house is amazing! ❤❤❤
Oh my goodness and sitting there waiting for our favourite song so we could record them onto a cassette
oh my gosh, yes!
nice video today. Always have loved the history of the various locations and like you, lately I've been getting hooked on mysteries and true crime programs, (48 Hours and those stories). Also, enjoy the nice mix of music as you show the different scenes.
So happy to see you are out there!
The look on your face with that weird radio station😂😂😂😂😂
Great video. I grew up in a house built in 1883. Good bones. Renovation $$ is huge, too; on those $6000 homes. + permits.... I love seeing "your process of where you're going next"/planning next spot. That'd make for interested
short vids. Enjoy the history of the town & and your amazing photography.
So do those tugboats just escort the long barges through the narrow channels?
Yes. Cool, isn't it?
I really enjoyed this video. Thank you.
I love your historical facts about these places.
Yep, Casey Kasem (spelling?) top 40 Countdown on the radio every Saturday. ☺️🩷
I really enjoyed the history in this video. It was so interesting. ☺️
We have property a mile from the Clearwater dam. Wonderful place.
