You could (probably) make a "housing" for the differential out of a plunger. Yes, the "toilet's stuck!" things. A rubber one might fit, and a hard plastic & corrugated plunger will definitely fit, but rubber would be more durable. I'd do it. I've used many plumbing bits on my car! ( really, my daily driver has a pipe fitting on the exhaust to help the computer, pipe hangers mounting motorcycle mirrors to the fenders, and maybe more :p )
I was imagining an aluminum foil covering, then fiberglass over the differential to make it removable. Or a CV joint boot? Or two part epoxy to keep moisture and dirt out. This is very inspiring!

Years ago, at Grassroots Motorsport's Battle of Lemons, (2003?) there was a Geo Metro using a GSR1000R engine driving the factory (Geo) differential and axles on homemade mounts. The ring gear replaced with a sprocket, so it was chain drive, and the differential was sealed with a plunger.
When he made those circles I knew this man what is a builder. He should have used a rear differential like that he could get different gear ratios and just mount the sprocket on the yolk and you’re good you got brakes different gear ratios and lubricated bearings.

That would double the wattage making it 1kw. The number one priority in electric vehicle design is keeping the power consumption as low as possible. You only have a set amount of battery life. Being miserly will increase the range of travel on a single charge.

I would go a step further with the robothut comments, try to make ahard pvc mould to the differential and motor sprocket for better life, and avoid dust and friction using grease or oil
Pretty cool! I don't understand the reason for the driving both wheels. Driving both wheels would put more load on the motor and reduce the distance on a single charge. Why not drive one shaft only? Less drag/torque will increase top speed.

as soon that alternator is in a closed circuit it creates braking torque, wasting more energy from that car than it would recharge. you would create a pointless brake. if you want to recharge the batteries while driving, you can use the motor to brake when you step onto the brake pedal and generate a little bit of electricity you back feed into the battery. thats called regenerative braking. you wont get much out of it though. if your DIY car has like 10 miles of range, you get maybe one more mile out of it.
I made a really good styrofoam body out of a big chunk of Styrofoam and a little bit of Bondo that is very lightweight and easy to work with for a body

I HAD A VERY SIMILAR IDEA WITH VW AIRCOOLED AXELS. BOOOOOM! YOU PROVED IT!
the differential won't last long without OIL, engine needs to be mounted better.
