It took me years to understand how to deal with pine candles; like you say, I watched too many complicated videos. You really explain it well and keep it simple. Peter I hope you know how much you are appreciated.
Thanks again for all your wonderful videos ☺

I've been wondering all these years on how to trim my japanese black pine. I was afraid to cut the candles thus it doesn't develop dense and graceful foliage like I see in pictures. Thank you Peter for your gift of knowledge. The least I could do is give this video a like or thumb up. How I wish I could give more.

great video. Same concept applies whether in pot or in ground. I spent 19 years as a landscape maintenance contractor and I doubt that 2 percent of the other contractors had a clue on how to prune pines. Most would just use a hedge shear to hack back the mugo pines in landscapes to keep them in control. I cringed every time I saw that. Thank you for some great videos. I am trying to build my collection of potted native trees for my home now in retirement.

I will never make the same mistake again. I love bonsai as they are miniature gardens. I want all my maples and pines to look like large bonsai. Thank you for your help and teaching. May advice to clean the sap from pretty much everywhere is organic oil. It works well also with your hands. Just rub your hands with the oil, then wash it with soap and water. No need for expansive cleaning stuff. That works very efficiently, just try it for your self but be aware of the sharp cutting edges. :)

Thank you for making a video that goes to the crux of how to prune pines and create those beautiful pads. I still have one question about budding. Does leaving needles on a branch encourage or inhibit budding? I read one Japanese book that recommended removing most of previous years' needles but leaving a few a little ways down the branch. From my own experience, I haven't been able to figure out the relationship between needles and budding because by the time a bud comes out, I don't know if there used to be a needle there or not. What do you think?

I've done the same thing, but with pines that are planted in the ground, and stopping them from growing more than 15 feet tall (give or take) by getting a ladder and a pole saw with a hedge trimmer attachment (lopers on a pole would have been the wisest and less heavy choice if my boss had them, which he didn't...) to chop off all of the candles -__- We had probably ten pines to do that way on a single property.

Thanks Peter, I always look forward to your videos. The art of bonsai isnt still well practiced in india..and pine bonsai is extremely rare here .
I find pine bonsai extremely fascinating, yet the process, confusing..I'm myself growing a beautiful pine since 4-5 yrs..
As every bonsai enthusiast knows, we grow any pre bonsai as tall as possible, for a thick trunk..
My question is, if we decandle the candles regularly, wont it hamper the height of the pine, and hence, the girth of the trunk?? Is the decandling process is applied early on, or only after a certain age?? THANKS

The resin of pine trees can be cleaned very easily with turpentine or similar solvents. No need for scraping. I know it because I live in a pinewood and the trees drop resin on my car. The important thing is to remove the resin before it gets old and hard.

Is that normal for the winter time??
    Or, is it spider mites?
