There's a story about Tim almost leaving the Spurs to join the Orlando Magic after his rookie deal was up. Everyone says that the Magic's head coach at the time, Doc Rivers, fumbled the interview. But Duncan was never going to leave the Spurs, even if he thought he wanted to. Doc said the last thing Tim told him before he got on the plane was, "I'm pretty sure I'm coming to the Magic, but I have to talk to Pop one last time before I leave. I love Pop."
And everyone should have known right then that Tim was never going to leave Popovich. And he shouldn't. One of the best coach/superstar combos in all of sports.

Bro I’m almost 30 and I still think about him all the time. I teared up listening to him speak here. It’s something people who don’t follow sports can never understand. He’s like a friend you grew up with.

Timmy NEVER wears a tie. Ever. It was May 9, 2002. I was with a client at a Chinese restaurant on the NW side of San Antonio. It was a typical bright, sunny day and there was a ton of light flooding in the restaurant.
All of a sudden, there's like a solar eclipse--the entire restaurant got dark. I looked up to see Tim walking in with a body guard. Duncan totally blocked out the sun from the entrance, as he walked in.
I had just heard on the radio that Duncan had just earned the MVP award for the '01-'02 season. We were also in the middle of a playoff with the lakers, so I told my guest that if Tim walked by our table, I would congratulate him.
Sure enough, here he came. I stuck out my hand and said, "congratulations Tim; beat L A." He shook my hand, and said, "thanks." (typical Timmy- doesn't say much)
When I returned to the office I gathered up the guys and told them who I just shook hands with. Of course, most of them didn't believe me. I told them he was wearing a raggedy old red T shirt and some blue jean shorts.
When Timmy received his MVP trophy later that evening, guess what he was wearing? That same old T shirt and shorts! Didn't even bother to change clothes. You can take the boy outta the Islands, but you can't take the Islands outta the boy.
The next day at work, I was greeted with a lotta high fives.

It's a combined 7, but the point still stands! 70% of the championship in the 2000s were either Lakers or Spurs. Pure greatness by the Timmy and Kobe.
