Yuichi's slim treehouse sways as a nest in Japanese cypress

  • When builder/craftsman Yuichi Takeuchi was asked by a friend to build a treehouse as a second residence in Fujiyoshida- an area near the base of Mount Fuji and popular for vacation residences- Takeuchi set to work searching the trees and looking for a place to rent.
He finally found a friend who was willing to lease some land (for a decade) in the backyard of his woodworking workshop. Takeuchi then invited friends/coworkers to camp out with him and brainstorm at the site. “I’m not a professional architect… I don’t really design things I just enjoy what’s happening next. And this was designed by many of us just staying in this little house [the workshop floor] and sleep together, eat together and drink together and just keep talking about design and how we want so this was happening on the location.”
Together Takeuchi and friends of Tree Heads & Co. began constructing a tiny cabin (“about 4 and a half tatami mats”) perched 20 feet high on two young trees. It’s constructed from Japanese cypress, mostly from trees felled by Takeuchi within a couple miles of the property.
The tiny elevated home is furnished with just a carpet- the part-time residents roll out sleeping bags at night- and a kitchen of rice cooker and camping stove.

I wasn't questioning what type of accent it was. It's plainly of British origin. My point was that it's nice to hear a Japanese person speaking in a non-American accent.

I believe the uniqueness of this humble, yet majestic tree house is derived from people utilizing the"Fly by the seat of your pants" technique. Good practice for learning how to trust yourself and the other craftsmen involved, as a whole.
    It's a thing of Beauty !!!

Hearing ... "that is a noise you want" - and I would like to see a forest filmed from the inside ... zen-ish tranquility ... the tree house would allow for that on even level. And yes, his English is perfect - the first Japanese I remember speaking English, and then he is just one with his surroundings. Like his metaphors ("muscle") and how he is feels the trees, the soil, the sky. Hmmm ... probably a tree pattern camouflage buddhist. :)

As a youngster I built many a treehouse, as I am sure many others have also. It seems as somehow it returns us to our childhood nature. Somehow allowing our creativity to grow and not be stifled by what is dictated to what should be or what we perceive to be practical. Though there is a balanced being achieved here between the zen like nature of minimalism and the unconventional construction. Being in the trees also gives us a sense of security from what wanders the earth on the ground, but creates a creates a paradox with the insecurity of being suspended in air.

mr yuichi , you are a learned man to speak at least 2 languages fluently . i concur with a minimalist style , tatami mats is mostly all one needs to sleep comfortably , i liked your clever block and tackle system using heavy canvas bags . i wondered whether your treehome circumvents any zoning laws since you technically dont occupy the land your abode is in the air no one owns it , in some areas its known as ( air rights ) anyhow i thought your treehouse was one of the better i have seen . thank you for sharing your programme .

Great to see this treehouse in a place that allows creativity. In the USA, the treehouse itself would be forbidden, the railings would be unacceptably low, and when someone falls, the tree house owner would lose his life's savings and future wages in a lawsuit. There, you fall, you die. The way it should be.
