    Great video as always, here are some of my thoughts:
    1. Increased range for missile units are a little underrated because it enlarges your "zone of control", this makes it the enemy uncomfortable to bring his units too close to your walls as their siege towers are scaling, so they can't send their units up your walls as quickly one after another because they have to keep other units out of range while only the unit using the siege towers are doing their work. Therefore, you have more time to isolate and cut down their units one by one and maintain your defender's advantage. (works better against players but against AIs too)
    2. For Epic/Large Stone Walls you *could* counter the siege tower's damage output by just not putting units on walls (though easier said than done) it can be even more advantageous for you to swarm invading units as they are coming *down* from the walls. Though they might have an easier time taking control of your gates, but you can put a strong unit on the wall directly above the gate where no siege tower can scale. This kinda depends on which faction you're playing as, like for Rome it's best to be on walls for throwing pila but for hoplites it's best to be off the walls so you can use phalanx.
    3. Epic Stone Walls preventing sap points can help by making it extremely difficult for cavalry to enter by making the gates their only possible entrance, which is very difficult to destroy/take control of. (unless they have artillery, but then I'll just send out my own cavalry to hit and run)

    • @napoleoncomplex2712

      I would want to wait until the last minute and then rush troops up onto the walls. The trouble with waiting in the streets is if the enemy get control of those big tower, those towers are going to start shooting at YOU.

    • @coreymicallef365
      @coreymicallef365 4 роки тому +1

      For point 2 you can just stretch out hter formation on the wall to 2 ranks deep and the siege tower will be a lot less effective. It's attacks works the same way a ballista does so having big fat blob of troops to target is more likely to result in more casualties.

    • @jpjpjp453
      @jpjpjp453 3 роки тому +2

      Every bit of increased range is a big plus for archers. As your infantry is holding off and whittling down the enemy, more are going to be marching towards the towers to reinforce the attack. Archers, particularly elite ones, will be able to sometimes cause serious casualties before the tower base is reached, thus helping the defending infantry. Had one notable occasion where two stacks attacked and the reinforcing one was absolutely shot to pieces by archers deployed section by section along their line of march as well as the tower defenses.

    Epic stone walls with phalanxes blocking all choke point entrances to your city center. Archers in the city center firing over them into the streets and cavalry to mop up any survivors. The walls will kill 60% of the soldiers before they even reach your pikemen and it’ll be easy to kill the rest.

  • @jpjpjp453
    @jpjpjp453 3 роки тому +1

    One thing about the large and epic walls is if you can delay the initial attack as much as possible, the defenses will carve up a good portion of the enemy. Doesn't take much either. As the towers near the walls, rush infantry from either the streets or nearby wall sections and have them hold ground. They'll get overrun in time but every second the foe is delayed, the more damage being done upon them. That'll help the main defense at the plaza. If you really want to be sneaky about it, have a minor fast moving unit some distance away and as the enemy move towards the plaza, have them rush along the walls and recapture towers and the gatehouse. Then you'll really get the foe coming and going.

    Large and Epic stone walls are useful bc they dont get as utterly wrecked by onagers as normal ones.
    Also, I think you dramatically underestimate the usefulness of the additional height; it lets you put your archers on the walls and "sally" every turn you are under siege, which lets you *shred* their army as it repositions from being within archer range.

    If you're playing a faction with archers with a long range (like Rome or Egypt), the largest walls are really good for just "sallying out" but actually parking archers on the walls and sniping the enemy. 4 or 5 archers can take out 60% of a full stack army and cause it to retreat after two sallies/turns.

    You forgot the changes to the city layout you get with different walls. Large walls on a Roman \ Greek settlement force the AI to run a maze before getting to your town plaza. Most of the enemy army will be destroyed and exhausted before they even see a single soldier, even if you don't contest the walls or streets at all. Conversely, simple and epic stone walls result in a much simpler layout.

  • @danielbalderrama4137
    @danielbalderrama4137 4 роки тому +1

    Well the damage done by higher level walls from archers is massive. Because of the higher ground. Archers kill so many compared to them shooting on the ground. You forgot to consider multiplayer games. One unit of Baleric slingers will easily eliminate a unit of urban cohorts and still have ammo left over from large stone walls to epic. This is great advantage for multiplayer which makes assulting an epic stone wall city impossible because you would be an idiot defending the walls with infantry unless you are facing a pike faction or want to get more shots of with archers. The town square really gives you the edge with unlimited morale and chokepoint situation which you should easily be able to take advantage of

  • @coreymicallef365
    @coreymicallef365 4 роки тому

    I think there should have been some weighting put on these categories because even if siege towers become more effective on larger walls, the towers on those walls also become far more dangerous to siege towers as they approach (which is the main benefit of their increased fire power as far as I'm concerned) forcing the enemy to use artillery to take out towers or lose a lot of siege towers. You're also underrating sapping, I don't use it too much myself because I don't generally want to need to rebuild walls, but it's a useful tool to get around the choke points that gates can be in an assault. Also with smaller walls ladders are definitely effective simply because most garrisons are only going to have a limited number of decent melee troops and it's feasible to build enough ladders to assault enough of the walls to over stretch those decent melee troops or just capture a really long segment of the walls and all of the towers along that stretch to start using them against the enemy and once the walls are cleared they can get a lot of troops up the walls fast, meaning that you can get friendly archers up on the enemy walls to support the rest of the assault from a better vantage point (it doesn't give the same cover for troops being attacked from inside the walls as it does from an external assault, but it's still beneficial).

    The Epic Stone Walls are my favorite. You can simply move your units on the wall that are in the way of the oncoming seige tower. You just scoot your unit or units to the side (not even that far) and they are safe. Once the seige tower hits the wall it stops firing. So in my opinion the Epic walls have more Pros than cons.....if you have the money.

    You mentioned "larger fighting area" on the Epic Stone Wall. While I think the Epic Stone Wall is the best for other reasons (you can use the wall towers to your benefit more easily than take damage from the siege towers, ladders and sap points actually are very helpful to an attacker in their own ways, they can take more damage before collapsing, etc.), I would think that a larger fighting area would be a bad thing--the defender wants the area of attack to be as small as possible to make their defense most efficient--the same reason Thermopylae was the best place to stop the Persians in 480 BC.

  • @VonKrauzer

    If we are talking about pure battle effectiveness, ESW are the best, hands down. Yeah, siege towers get bigger and meaner, but you want to sally out ASAP before any siege is built. You only need to have one unit of cav and provoke enemy to chase you. ESW towers have not only higher damage, but higher range as well, so enemy will lose its army no problem. Same can be done with regular SW, but with much less efficiency.
    But as you have rightly said, there is also added cost to walls of missed opportunity. To build up to ESW from SW you need to spend from 9 to 10 turns and 9600 gold. You could have spent those time and money to build literally anything else. It's better to build barracks or stables and start building units to use them for conquest than sit and build walls. Honestly, you don't even need stonewalls. You need a general and a few good men on horses. Cav spam is the best defense.

But i agree,they are too high and a little bit boring cause you win anyway,the A.I. is just too dump.
