This video focuses on the format of VCT: LOCK//IN Sao Paulo, which is the opening tournament of Valorant Franchising. Every team in Valorant Franchising will be playing, including sentinels, NRG, C9, 100T, EG, LOUD, Leviatan, FURIA, FNATIC, Liquid, NaVi, Paper Rex, Global Esports, DRX, T1 and many more! The format is controversial because it is single-elimination - which many people think is a bad format for such a tournament. T

Could go for hours discussing this.. I think it's fair to say that the LOCK//INs main purpose is to introduce the teams to the world, rather than defining who is the number one in the world. Still doesn't make it less unfortunate to see teams fly home on day 1..
I guess as long as they accommodate the teams well. Maybe its fine? Or at least they can watch other teams or enjoy their stay there for a while after losing
@@ares6441 It's Riot we're talking about, at last Worlds they were kicking teams off of their accommodations as fast as the next day. Don't count on Riot being decent.
One of KOI or NRG flies back home even before dealing with jetlag 😂
Cant discuss this shit. The format is just trash
Igaf Imagine waiting months to watch your teams play on the big stage and seeing them getting absolutely gettin shit on and flying home the same day to stream? Are these a pro franchise team or streamer team doing pro on the sideline? We've waited months and this is what we got ? They promise us the franchising going to give us mores games but look at this result.
i saw it this way: its just a tournament for shits and giggles featuring every single team in franchising. its to build hype and having hype games, rather than something to care about super much ab winning. thats why theres no swiss format, unlike the csgo rio major.
Sure, it's not like the riot ceo said he wants as many single-elim tournaments as possible
Balla also said on Plat Chat, and I agree with this point, that having a weird one-off tourney like this would be fine if there were gonna be multiple other tournaments this year, but after LOCK IN, there's only one Masters event and then Champions. So this year will be extremely sparse for International competition, which tbh I think is kind of a flaw of this entire league as a whole anyways.
Either way, still super excited to see what happens at Sao Paulo, but if I was a die hard fan of any of these teams, I'd be kinda pissed about the format.
The head of Valorant esports, Leo Faria, said it was either this for 1 out of the 3 LAN events, or nothing and instead only have 2 events.
I much rather this. Some of the community and players need to chill wiht putting so much emphasis on this tourney and instead treat it as what it is, a showcase.
@@KiiDMaGiiK g l as cg
but i dont think we'll be getting another proper international instead of this one though. the way riot are presenting and arguing for this, it really seems like its either this or nothing, so i guess we just have to make do.
think thats how its gonna be for every year from now whether we like it or not, international competition is scarce in a most franchised systems, especially looking at riots other game LoL
We should treat as what it is?
They have one month for the tournament but still say there is no time for a good format. Rito Games just want views and they dont care about showing the teams or even just competitive integrity
@@scrumptiousbisquitz1140 Yes that is precisely what the head of esports at Valorant said. It was either this or nothing and then only 2 international events. He said they couldnt do a full event because they had to let teams prepare and settle in for the VCT tour. He also said in future years there will be 3 full events
One thing that I haven't heard discuss is... the entire tournament has live audience, just like the Rio Major had. And as far as I know, it's not common practice, teams are not used to playing 4-7 matches in front of a crow. One of the biggest complaints during the CS Major was the difference teams felt playing in front of a crowd during non play-off matches and how playing backstage gave teams an advantage, because of the pressure and noise. Although Valorant audience will not be as excited or loud as the one in the major (from someone who attended IEM Rio and has front row tickets for 5 days of Lock//In), I think it's still something to consider... Riot is all about leveling the plain field and seeming "fair" and non-biased, having multi streams and only some teams playing in front of a crowds is not it.
Leo did address (in the same podcast) the reason for the first side of the bracket play first then the second. They have a set amount of budget that can be used for everything. Splitting the 2 groups will reduce the costs on housing/ prac room etc by half. So they can spend more on spectacles that the viewers from home can experience. (I paraphrase)
What do you think of the LOCK//IN Format? And who do you think will take the crown?
love all you guys, hope you enjoyed
Sentinel
Horrible format with potential to be maybe the best tournament in history for the game but nah riot didnt want that so they made this format that requires lucky seeding if you want to be placed higher than top 16. There is no way that 100T should be able to go further than TL and NAVI but the format felt like that was needed.
I could understand if there were more tournaments this year but nah most teams will just go there to get eliminated and leave. Great format riot
@@failandimprove2159 lucky seeding? you still have to win your games. theres no luck
I like the format tbh. Every game is high stakes, you can't have an "off day." Every player has to be at their best if they want to win or progress in the tournament. There's no "lucky seeding" that lets teams just skate by a bracket, you either have what it takes or you can watch from home like the rest of the fans
@@failandimprove2159 this format will be determined who is the most consistent and egoist team there is
I like what you have said in the end, this is to hype up the year for the VCT Tournaments. It’s like introducing the starting cast of a movie to new audiences who just entered the valorant space and community.
Commend the quality of your videos are getting better each upload. Keep up the good work!
Hey just recently discovered your videos. I really like your style man very well thought out videos keep going bro 🔥
I think its pretty cool how every match counts. Give it your all and win or go home. Bringing back the meaning of cutthroat tournaments rather than lenient ones where even if you lose a series you have the chance to come back.
I mean yeah but like the riot guy said, if you lose pistol round it is very likely you lose the next if not next 2 rounds due to eco. That’s a possible 3 round lead.
I always love this channel because it helps us (the viewer) to have a causal experience to tournament watch and making it easy to know what going on. Thank you so much for making this video and making this channel, i hope your taking care of yourself and enjoying what you are doing.
good video as always bro keep it up! Your videos are very professional
Based Commend Guard jersey, also love these deep dives on pro VCT, keep it up!
Single Ilim is not good for competitive integrity, but there games are going to be INSANELY HYPE.
yeah but it would be very hard to do 32 team double elim
@@sea1865 When did I suggest A double bracket? When did I say I was even upset with there choice?
@@nathanscott729 bro you said it wasn't good for competitive integrity which i agree with, but i said it would be hard to do a double elim or even swiss

The editing has gotten better than before.
Good shit bro
I get why pros don't like it. Pros will always argue towards most matches played. The more time to sort out the best, the better.
But as a viewer, I think this is hype.
exactly. on rank i dont even get to choose a map so this is the closest to a real life experience in the game.
get sweaty or get out
and without the viewers the teams wouldnt exist
I’m excited for the tournament! I feel riot choose the best possible option given the scope of the tournament.
you literally d not miss bro. fantastic content as always
This format is perfect to hype up the audience and bring in new viewers to esports.
how would new viewers be interested if their favorite team spent days traveling to Brazil, play one game, loses, and gets booted off the whole tournament.
@@darren8608 The tournament and hype brought in by single elimination brings in attention.
@@BACON-nf2rr because fans totally want to see their favorite team lose with no chance of redemption
@@darren8608 You are dumb. New viewers don’t have a favorite team, so it’s a way of introducing the teams to those who don’t know any of them. It’s still very dumb and should be hated without a doubt.
@@darren8608tbf it IS 30 teams, if there was a lower bracket this event would take forever unless they streamed multiple games at once like red bull home ground (which was a disaster)
great content man! love ur vids
As a audience, this format of tournament is fantastic for its excitement and competitiveness, game like SEN vs Fnatic it’s just a must watch. It’s also fairly understandable on the frustration for players, where you could have a bad game and you find your way to the airport.
Every single one of your videos is so hype!
Honestly, excited for the tourney. I don't really mind the format, it's just the kick-off. Very informative vid Commend!
ppl need to realize this event is more to introduce all the teams rather than create a masters like tourney
I think the format is fine it probably won't be practical to have a double elemination bracket if you got 30 teams in 1 tournament they are also pausing challengers for this which I'd imagine can't be paused for too long and it's also a good chance to see what all these teams are made of i been watching vct for a while now and i still don't know who half these teams are and if you get eliminated day 1 it's Brazil just explore i am sure there is a lot to experience there
7:14, sean missed that the teams playing later could watch the teams playing earlier aswell since they don't have anything to do but prac. And also being warm for the knockout stage might be an advantage aswell.
Of course the teams playing earlier will have a larger pool of games to inspect (both their own group's and the others) but I don't think its such huge impact because the teams versing eachother in the knockout will have good idea of their opponents. I think it is overall pretty balanced, as best as it can be considering other logistical hurdles.
amazing video as always :DD
As much as a full Swiss system would be amazing, I understand why it is the way it is. I 100% understand the pro's concerns but RIOT want Valorant to explode in 2023, and this is a simple but effective way to showcase every team to old and new fans. Stakes will be high for every match. This will be a good way to kick off the year. This was their goal.
Very nice work and video :)
I just hope people will have a good time there.
You can like it or not, but you can't say it's an easy task to manage a 32 teams tournament in 3 weeks
I'm so hyped for this lock in event!
As a csgo fan myself, i love swiss system, it works very well in Majors and created unbeliveable storylines. However, with 32 teams, i dont really think it would be a great idea to play in swiss format. For example, if a team got into knockouts with a 3-2 difference, it means that they would potientially have to play 9 games if they get into the final which is probably not good for a kick off tournament. So yeah, single elim is the only way this could go well
I'm honestly happy they went for a single elim tournament, I think it makes things more exciting and it leaves a lot of room for upsets. It's also easier as a viewer to keep track of everyone still in the game. I wouldn't have watched as many matches as I did if they went with a Swiss format honestly. I really think Riot made the right decision in focusing more on the hype this tourney would generate rather than competitiveness. And given how the last match played out, they really hit the jackpot. Now they can focus on actual competitiveness.
first, it's a franchise teams, so riot surely don't want some match to be off stream, if there are 100 matches, all that 100 matches need to be live. second, as mentioned, broadcast hours, therefore they don't have many 3 matches per day if it's not really a must. three, they already have full lineup for VPL, Masters, LCQ, Ascension, Champions and don't forget Game Changers until Oct/Nov, if they sacrifice more time for this kick off event that meant just to show 'exhibition match' between top teams, you won't even have time to prepare for next year :)
Having many random elements is interesting imo because it reflects the average rank games that players play in the first place. aka when you watch the game, it makes you go "thats just like me fr fr"
thats fair. As a viewer this definitely gets you more on the edge of your sit than having a losers bracket, tbh if a team loses once i wouldnt even bother watching that team again. It seems unfair for the players bec of the travel and what-not but this is to kick off the show and garner fans for the upcoming years.. champions needs to be as hype as worlds and riot knows what theyre doing.
i think the format works and worked well for what the tournament was, it was just meant to show off the new franchised teams and probably hit some marks on what riot promised the orgs that back these teams, plus it was fun to see how the new teams performed under extreme pressure
i think it makes sense because we normally watch Sen or 100 thieves etc. rest normally don't event count. 1 stream would makes sense for equal opp.ts
ty for the video, i enjoyed.
In swiss in CSGO it is bo1 for until you get to 2 wins or 2 losses and then you're either elimination games or promotion games are bo3
I get how it sucks for players but holy fuck I’m so excited to watch this shit lol. It’s gonna make everything way more intense! This tournament is only happening to get people excited for pro val again, it’s like a slightly more interesting val World Cup
I'm just excited to see paper rex play
alr ik this might sound stupid but they could do it in the fifa world cup type of format? (i mean there are 32 teams and they've got one month to host it right)
The only Problem with this Tournament is, that with all these questionmarks this will still count as the first masters this year and will qualify you for champs
I love it though. Its like a Champions League tourney, and that makes it more fun. Most physical sports have a single elim anyway, this makes it super thrilling and close, and IMO there should be a massive single elim tourney every year, maybe not as long as this lock in, since a single elim is unique and scary for the fun of it
not rly sure what this video is about but the background music slaps 🙏🙏🙏
I guess they could have done a more for fun kick off event instead like league does. They where regional tho and not really a tournament. Where they just put multiple pro players from different teams together and let them play tandem with 1 on mouse and 1 on keyboard. Or a smaller 1 v 1 tournament where it's just 1 player playing against 1
I honestly don’t mind at all as the viewer it would be such a long tournament if it wasn’t and it’s not supposed to be like if you win you’re now the best team ever just a fun make all the teams fight
I think the issue stems from the fact that riot will not move away from 1 stream. Having multiple streams in the first rounds makes sense. What comes to mind immediately to me is how the 4 major tennis tournaments are shown on TV. (referring to Wimbledon, French Open, US Open, and AUS Open). These tournaments are single elimination, but they don't only broadcast one match at a time. In the early rounds they will have matches that overlap, and there is a good reason for that. It's that not everyone cares about every single player in the tournament. Later on in these tournaments, they will only play one match at a time as the later matches are higher stakes and higher skill. I guarantee that no valorant fan cares about every single one of the 32 teams in this tournament. The restraint of keeping everything on one single stream, even in the early rounds is puzzling to me. Why not play even just the first round on two or three streams? Sure, the quarter and semi finals shouldn't overlap, but I just don't understand the full commitment to one stream for an entire tournament. If they would just consider doing multiple streams for even less than half of the tournament, it takes a lot less time and other formatting options would be possible like the swiss format. I still don't think this tournament format is terrible but I'm just a little confused by their reasoning.
The reason is very simple. Unlike Champions, this is literally the very first tournament in the new T1 League. There are some new teams that have completely new players that have never made it to Champions. They WANT every team to have equal opportunity to get watched and exposure. I'm sure there is still gonna be difference in viewing numbers between more popular regions still.
Parque do Ibirapuera is not a big place, it is fit for one playing stage only, for multiple streams, it means that they would need to use other venues, which would also be a nightmare for viewers who want to watch a specific team or go multiple days to watch, as the venues would not be very close, can't think any other place close to Parque do Ibirapuera that could properly host LOCK//IN
bro rockin with the guard jersey , bro im honestly hope riot next time find better franchise team based on skill too not popularity and clout uhhh...
LOCK//IN is more like a showcase of teams, does suck to see your favourite team just fly off day 1 from single elims but it's not like the teams that signed up were surprised by this. They knew the consequences of losing and still, well you know, locked in. Besides, there's a nice adrenaline rush that comes from this kind of format you won't get from swiss and I think that has it's own advantages.
Don't see a problem, you have to preform to win at the end, and I don't usually like the upper and lower bracket style it gives teams an easy 2nd chance if they fucked up when in reality how can you be the best if you lost. The winner should be the one who won every single round.
I think why people expect this event to be good so much is because valorant fans like me is not enjoy watching unofficial event that much it's like not that exciting compare to challengers and master last year and the world champions ended too soon last year. we waiting so long for the next official event, but I think this a good enough format for showing all of franchising teams +2 china team.
i missed the old tournament systems
Right u tell me how many matches will be needed to play for this being double elim
Whats the title of the ED that you used?
Basically like the football world cup almost, except for the group stages, so makes sense
The 100T vs Navi example you gave isn't valid.
100T vs Navi would qualify to Semis at the same day and have the match at March 3.
The only scheduling problem is the Grand Finals where the Alpha Finalist would have a day to prep for the Finals compared to the Omega Finalists as Alpha has semis in March 2, Omega has it in 3 and Finals is in March 4.
I'm a bit confused, will the teams play 3 different maps or??? What exactly
Riot said that the team who win this event will get a extra spot in master Tokyo.
But what if a China team wins it?
Will it count as a Pacific or a Chinese team?
I have no idea... good question! I guess so, but don't think it's been confirmed.

Does attending to this event will really help your team vs the expenses going there and losing 1 will go home.
whats the music at the end it slaps
Its hard to say "its just a fun kick off tourney" and then say "the winner will secure their region an extra spot in masters" imho
Its still fun tourney the winner not automaticly go into master wtf are you saying
@@HadirUntukAnda it still determines if your region (aka, you) get an extra chance to make an international tourney. You want more chances to make a high level tourney, right?
Pokemon x/y boutique music. BOOM.
While I understand where Leo is coming from. This is the first and possibly only time that all 30 Franchise teams and 2 Chinese teams are going to be in one spot playing in the same tournament. It would be better to have the tourney go longer and if the player gets burnt out from watching every single team, the can watch their favorite team(s) until top 8 or something. It gives all the franchise teams time a good bit of time in the spotlight, and gives them all a bit longer to adapt to their new teams.
riot isnt spending money for new teams to adapt, they have their own practice time to do that.
“They can just watch their favorite teams.” That’s the exact reason Riot is doing this style. If this was the champions tourney, then yeah, this format would be ridiculous. But this is to kick off the whole year and to introduce all the teams without burning out the audience. Honestly, I think this is the best format they could come up with factoring in time, budgets, team exposure, etc. It’s not perfect, but I think it’s the best we can get
i dont think u get it, #1 its alrdy lasting a month, #2 its vct the whole hype is knowing how easy it is for ur team to get out and watching them push on lol. this is meant to be the hardest valorant tonri in the world lol
also u have to understand its also very hard to host this, esp for the staff
Dude that would take forever. Where you not watching the video? Already over a month, any longer would make it even longer than masters which makes no sense. The fact that there this many teams means that single elimination is smart. I would rather watch my team win and ton of matches with high stakes and lose knowing they tried their hardest. Rather than watching them lose and get back up like it is nothing. While this is good for sorting out the best of the best. It is cooler for the fans because it almost replicates real life in a sense. Had they did double or swiss, it could have taken over 4 months, for a SINGLE tournament that was only meant to franchise. This would leave no room for challengers, or masters.
great idea for a tournament format. even better than on masters
As an introduction tournament, i don't think its bad, as long as they don't do it like this again. The aim is to show these teams off so yeah.
As a viwer i like it, si easy to process ando every Game counts, i understand why teams complain but i Will Say "just get better" simple as that
By watching this video, I realized that if I were Riot themselves, I would not make my fans burns out too, I don't want the teams didn't get enough exposure like NA or EU viewers. I think this is the best choice to make, for now.
if this double elemination, the tournament gonna be 6 weeks rundown which is bad for Riot to finance the tournament
Amazing video
when is commend predictions for VCT LOCK IN coming?
We've had esports for decades now and they still haven't figured this out?
I guess it should have a group stage, and then an elimination matches
I feel like player/people complaining about this are just being petty or just complaining without being rhibking about what's this tournament about and why its setup like that but thats just my opinion
Does anybody the ending sounds name? Heard it so much but still don't know the name
And the intro song?
I feel like it’s very likely that a bunch of the games are blowouts, which is the opposite of hype, giving teams actual time to scrim and improve or give multiple looks against different teams is better for the fans and the players
After watching these games, I disagree. Even when seeing my favorite team lose(NRG). That feeling that you know that if they lose, it is over, made my heart pound. Seeing that final map between them and loud fight with everything they got was amazing. Single elimination almost feels like a real life where all you have if one life and it is over, which brings in adrenaline, which is what generates hype for the players. For the players, this sucks, but for fans, that adrenaline rush that you get knowing that your team has to win or they are out is amazing. Even on bad days, they have to give your all. Single elimination by nature, generates hype.
I think single elim is rather unfortunate
But completely reasonable and understandable
I'm excited

I mean I ain't no multi-million dollar company and they probably know what they doin. I'll just be happy with what we get. Just sad for some teams to go home day 1 although the hype will be crazy because I as a fan could cheer for any team since all these teams have new rosters and some could just be dark horses
Actually I like this, I get that we lose one great team immediately, like FNC OR SEN, but if riot main objective is exposing teams this format is pretty good, we’ll have other occasions for international events with longer games like masters or champions later this year. Just enjoy this games and pray ur team doesn’t lose the first game 😂
Couldn’t we have a lower bracket, but for the lower bracket, have no production and casters and just a stream
In swiss, your elimination / qualification match is always a bo3 :)
Hell yeah new commend content
my opinion :
multi stream is also awful for viewers, Dota 2 for example, iirc on TI group stage they have 4-5 match running at the same time, and stream last 9hrs+ each, not only viewers would be confused on which game to watch, they will missed a lot of beautiful moments of the tournament, i also think that switching between streams also makes watching it less enjoyable
riot have actually good arguments about why they chose this format
4:43 they dont about their rank players
I Think they should do it like the football World Cup so there is a lot of entertaining all the time
who do you guys reckon will win VCT?????????
I don't think it's really worthwhile to argue about bad formats anymore. The entirety of esports in general is chalked anyway.
I actually love this
I don't want to be rude but are you sure about who is being the best in lock/in does not matter? the winner of the tour will get one more slot in which league it's in? are you high?
Who knew a whopping 32 team LAN would be so brutal to organize lmfao. My best takeaway for this tourney is that this is an exhibition tournament, on steroids, with some officiality in it. Basically no greater and bigger than Masters event, it just so happened to be a LAN so people were expecting Masters-like quality format. Eliminated? Who cares? You win the whole LOCK//IN? Great, have a cookie or something.
As much as I hate Leo Faria, I don't disagree with most of his takes. As you said, this is a kickoff event, not some Major. It's meant to stir up hype for the upcoming season, and while well thought out plans and macro plays can be hype, most fans want to see high level micro, which tournaments like this can provide.
