Okay, I'm a veteran of the board game, so here's some tips: the single most important thing in Gloomhaven is understanding how enemies prioritise their attacks. Enemies ALWAYS target the nearest character, and if multiple characters are within equally close range, they attack the character with the lower initiative. This means that in picking initiative for your characters you are also choosing which will draw aggro from the enemies. Attack modifier decks get reshuffled at the end of an activation wherein a x2 damage or a null (x0) card has been drawn.
My friends and I have been recently playing our first campaign. Thank you for explaining the conditions that make the modifier deck shuffle. We have been wondering that for a while now. We've reached retirement goals for two characters so far and we didn't know that lol
I actually bought the board game, but haven't been able to make the time to play it (its a lengthy investment!), thinking about getting the digital version now so I can actually play it lol
Lately it seems every time I search for a video on a game I want to play there he is - Christopher Odd. In all his glory. rumbling, fumbling, and stumbling through.
Thanks for revisiting this Odd. It is looking excellent. I have been waiting for it to leave early access because sometimes I want to play Gloomhaven, but not enough to open the box and set everything up.
The log in the lower right helps you backtrack things that happend you might have missed. For example the rogue drawing +1 and +2 does show up in the log even after the fact. it also indirectly tells you if it was advantage or not, as the following line shows which of the two as picked. And drawing two always means either advantage or disadvantage. So picking the lower one means she had disadvantage.
Excellent run, would definitely love to see more! This is especially since you run the same team I run with my teenage daughter (She plays the Brute, I am the tinkerer. what else?) on the boardgame. We are 15 scenarios in and having the time of our lives! Please read Good Writtance comment below if you haven't yet. Knowing the AI is not cheating and not exploit, it is a part of the Gloomhaven puzzle. this is also why you get to see enemy intention every round so you can adjust. And one convenience tip: you can always change which of your cards will be the initiative by clicking on the round circle by the card name . no need to choose one first just for that. Initiative is, of course, key to this game. Hope you enjoy it, I will enjoy watching. subscribing for that.
The archer did have disadvantage. He drew a +1 and +2 card which used the +1. You also need to consider when you burn cards that you might not have enough cards to finish the mission. If you run out of cards, you are dead. Taking a rest before you absolutely have to is a big no-no. As 'Good Writtance' mentions, the nearest and faster person gets the agro which is usually bad for the Scoundrel with all of her fast cards. You always have to make sure the tougher characters are closer to at least some of the enemy. You are thinking of Wounded. Poison means enemy attacks gain +1 attack when attacking you.
I agree with what’s been said that you should do a co-op campaign with one or two friends. 3 is the magic number I think. Also, if you decide to do it in this way, imperfect communication is key to making the game more interesting. In case you’re not sure what that means, it’s when you can only speak vaguely about what you are thinking of doing as you select what cards to play the next round. No specifics about how many hexes you will move or how much damage your attack should do etc. This is an essential part of the board game, and I think it should carry over to the PC version in order to maximise the fun for the players :) Find your friends and saddle up 😁
Hiya Chris, Two things: 1) Poison gives +1 damage to attacks received. 2) You forgot to equip your items that you purchased at the merchant prior to heading out. Gloomhaven remains one of the best values in tabletop gaming, and I'm glad to see the digital version has the complete campaign. You may find, like many do with the tabletop version that three mercs are the "sweet spot" as you progress. Thanks for sharing this with the community, and I hope to see you play the entire campaign. Cheers,
Delighted to see this. Really considereing getting it as i wanted the TTRPG as well but had noone to play with. Everything i have heard so far is this is bascially the board game perfectly adapted. My only hesitency is the difficulty and if i will have the time to learn it lol.
More gloomhaven! I own the boardgame, opened it once, looked at the 20 pounds of cardboard inside and decided to wait for the digital lol. Id love to see you stream some of this though judging by what i know finishing a campaign could be as lengthy as your current xcom run :)

I have finished the board game of this, minus some side quests. Honestly I think the video game version may be harder cause in the board game you control the monsters, and can direct them, were this its automatic.
I don't think so. Both in the board game and this enemies (and minions) will target closest opponent (or lowest initiative if equal). Part of the strategy is juggling targeting.
@@rhysiamt Yeah but many times in the board game their are characters that are equal in initiative and in closest for the monsters, in which case the players decide which person they hit. In this its random if that happens.

I'm trying really hard to enjoy this game and immerse myself in it, but the more I do the more I become utterly frustrated with the unnecessary overcomplexity in the games mechanics and how the whole system works. It doesn't even feel satisfying in terms of combat and the modifiers system is slightly annoying and just sprinkled confusion to an already confusing AI. For example, at 37:45 where the enemy doesn't die from the poison, these moments where you (the player) think you understand how things work and then they just don't work at all without any explanation is just disjointed and rigged. I'm trying to find reasons to continue to dive further into this game as I am obsessed with turn based strategy games.
My summarized Gloomhaven review: I'll start by talking about the negatives. While I don't think that the graphics are all that good, especially the lack of interesting animations, personally, I think that the 3d graphics for this game could be a lot more simple looking, and the game wouldn't really be any less enjoyable, though I do think that the UI and controls during combat could be a little bit more clearly presented, and could be streamlined to reduce clicking, and to also allow enemy turns and other combat animations to go more quickly, to reduce the time you spend waiting for the game to let you continue playing (this is a common complaint against many, many turn-based tactical games, but it is also an issue which tends to get fixed with patches, or with user-made mods, usually by adding options to speed up or skip certain animations). Gloomhaven is also definitely not well optimized, at least not for a Zen 3 CPU combined with a 1070 ti, because it's surprisingly stuttery on my system, regardless of what graphics settings I use, though that doesn't matter very much at all because even compared to other turn based tactics games, you don't need to move the perspective around that much, so the stuttering isn't as noticeable as it could be. The game still has a very well polished overall presentation style which is PARTICULARLY impressive when you realize just how tiny their budget must have been compared to the most acclaimed turn based tactical games in the genre, such as the Xcom games. And, while the writing is fairly simple for the most part, and sometimes pretty cliche or schlocky (as you would expect for this kind of game), a lot of the writing displays a self-aware literary sophistication, moral ambiguity, and mystery, which fits well with the non-linear choices and consequences which the player is presented with, in a way which helps to draw the player in to the experience. The game mechanics are clearly very thoroughly polished and play-tested, and yet the game also feels very original at the same time, because of the way that it combines so many different mechanics with a good quality, well thought out narrative and setting. Personally, I think that the way these game mechanics have been combined together are actually better suited to a PC game, even though they were originally designed for a board game.
I've been playing and he works just fine as a tank - healing can be damage mitigation just as much as shielding is - either way you have a high health character who can soak hits and return solid damage in melee range.
I be very wary of streaming this game. It’s technically an old game because the board game has been out for so long. Many classes and scenarios have “optimal” ways to play so just a heads up. Be prepared for some serious back seating to occur. Lol but you would likely have a instant heads up whenever you have a question about an interaction. I probably have over 1000 hours in the tabletop version I’ve played the campaign more than twice through. It is a fantastic game and I hope you enjoy it.
