Greetings from here in the food forest and thanks for watching my friend! If you are in an area where it’s about to get cold 🥶 and you want a jumpstart on the grow season next year plant those rhizomes in separate 1 gallon containers and pop them in your greenhouse for the fall and winter months, they will be 18” tall or more by March and you can plant them outside if it’s warm enough in your area.

I thought I lost mine over the winter. I bought a stalk in a pot and it turned yellow and withered away. I cut it down to the dirt and left it alone. Now two stalks have come up. I am so happy. Great video!
Good morning Candy Girl and thank you for taking a few moments to watch this video! Yes shampoo ginger tends to go dormant during the fall and winter months in colder grow zones but typically return the following season and begin to sprout when the soil temperature reaches about 70° Best wishing growing yours this year, the blossoms should be spectacular!
They die completely back every winter. Just give them small amounts of water throughout winter when you remember... but not regularly. When the temperature in spring is the consistent perfect temp... they’ll be back! They are a forest understory plant so they like dappled shade. I planted mine in an area that we can’t more b/c of a terrible root system of an oak and a magnolia. They went nuts!!!! I’m in the Florida panhandle
@@rats2themoon@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel, I'm in zone 8, hour north of Macon GA. I have a few rhizomes to plant, just arrived today. I haven't found a clear fule for this yet. N. GA will have low 20s for the next few months, I want these indoor in pots. Figure I should put two to a pot so it's not crowded. I have good potting soil and organic fertilizer for the spring. Should these go in the dirt now? Can I keep them lightly in soil, and near my south facing window? Or should these be wrapped in a paper bag, kept in a cabinet or garage? I need specifics so I can be ready for springtime... Thank you 🙏🏻
I'm glad you talked about moving it to a shadier spot. I just got some rhizomes and looking for advice. I know just where in going to plant these now. Thank you!
Hi Laura and thanks for taking a few moments to watch this video! I’m glad that you found it informative and hope that these tips help when growing your ginger.
ADL Channel Hi my friend, they didn't blossom for us this year but we were pleased to see so many stalks come up out there, it shows us how much our rhizomes have spread out, have a great weekend and thank you!
Hi Cindy! Thanks for tuning in my friend, if interested in attempting to grow this in your area, email me your shipping address at: thegreenthumbgardeningchannel@gmail.com and I will gladly send you a rhizome when the plants go dormant later this Fall, have a great weekend!
Hi Carolyn! I was hoping for blossoms this year but we may not get any as we had a hard winter last year and they came up much later in the Spring than normal.
Hello , After many years of looking for this plant for my daughter. I finally have it. I planted them about 3 weeks ago . They are coming up fast with a pretty green. Georgia. Thank you for sharing.
Greetings and my gratitude to you Faith9, I appreciate you taking the time to watch this video, this is my 4th year growing it here in my gardens, and my latest video update on this plant was just uploaded a day ago. Indeed it does grow well here in Georgia in this hot and rainy time of year, I hope that your daughter’s plants grow well and produce lots of ginger for her.
Absolutely, plant is partial shade, till your soil to a depth of 8” before planting as shampoo ginger tends to root deep. Plat your rhizomes at a depth of no more than 2” and space them 8-10” apart. Rhizomes should sprout in 3-6 weeks.
Got my original rhizome from a neighbor down the street a couple years back, was hoping that it blossomed again this year but due to our hard winter last year and the late sprouting of the stalks I'm not sure if we will get blossoms before the cold weather sets in here this year, thanks for watching this update Mark!
We were lucky enough to receive a rhizome about 2 1/2 years ago from a neighbor and it has really spread out since we first planted it, thanks for watching this Grow Family Network!
Weekend greetings to you halfanewfie! How are you my friend? We are finally getting some cooler weather here on a daily basis, been waiting on Fall weather to actually reach us here in Tifton.
@@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel Doing well! Working on a couple of home canning projects starting Monday to get my pantry stocked and making a Rams blanket for my SO. We are waiting for Fall weather too. It's high temps in Central CA . I can't wait for the cooler weather!
How long did it take yours to come up from the roots? I planted roots about 3 weeks ago and nothing yet so I'm waiting. Yours are beautiful! I'm in 8 as well
I highly recommend digging up your rhizomes at the end of the grow season and storing them in a cool dry place and planting them about 2 weeks before your last expected frost date next year.
Thank you so much for joining us here on our gardening channel Totally Meachy! We hope that you find the content here both exciting and informative, and sometimes even a little funny my friend, wishing you a fantastic weekend!
Greetings Richard, I typically use epsom salt to fertilize my ginger and turmeric plants with, it produces great results and healthy vigorously growing plants.
Greetings to you upon the dawning of this day Celeste, hopefully we will get a few blossoms before the cold weather sets in here my friend but if not our next update on these plants will be the transplant video when we relocate our rhizomes later this Fall, wishing you a gorgeous day!
Hi Danielle, thanks for watching this video my friend! I’d recommend planting your rhizomes at least 12” apart and no deeper than 2 and a half inches beneath the soil. If you live in zones 8-11 I‘d recommend planting in partial shade and all zones 7 and below-full sun. Fertilize with an organic 14-10-10 fertilizer once in spring after first canes begin to emerge from the soil and again in mid summer, also always plant ginger in well drained soil free of stones or other obstructions. Keep the soil moist but not wet, ginger doesn’t like for its roots and rhizomes to sit in boggy soil.
i just got some rhizomes and will plant them inside first for the spring. Love Ginger, and Can't wait to make shampoo out of these new ones. I have the butterfly gingers we got from Hawaii.
These plants are typically grown from the rhizomes that grow beneath the soil, I have a few available now, but if you wish to grow an abundance of this variety of ginger I will have it available in 1 and 2 pound containers after the harvest this fall.
Will send you a rhizome later this Fall my friend, email me your shipping address at thegreenthumbgardeningchannel@gmail.com, thanks for stopping by to watch this!
Wow, I purchased two rhizomes to grow indoors at my large windows and planted them in clear cups with red solo cup covers. Looks like larger pots is what I’ll need soon here in zone 6a thanx for the video 👍🏽
Hi Vee and blessings to you from here in our gardens! Yes if you purchased this variety of ginger rhizomes you will definitely need a container much larger than the cups that you currently have them in as they tend to grow at a geometric rate under the right growing conditions and canes can grow to well over 5’ tall and a single planted rhizome can produce up to 10 new rhizomes during a single grow season. If you intend to grow them in containers I’d recommend at least a 25-20 gallon container because unlike most varieties of ginger that grows shallow root systems, this variety, as seen in this video tends to root quite deeply and a small container will not be adequate to grow 2 rhizomes in, they will swiftly out grow a small container.
Greetings to you this evening Denim in a Wheelbarrow and thank you for stopping by our channel! We normally get blossoms but I think that the drought combined with the heatwave prevented that from happening this year, thanks for watching and we are now subscribed to your channel as well!
👋🏻 hey! Glad to find your video! Did you do a how-to on planting these? I just received some rhizomes and received planting directions, but I have heard different things. I live on the Arkansas/Missouri border and since Im not quite in zone 8- Im wondering if I should plant it indoors… 😇
Hi Sarah and thanks for watching! You can definitely plant it outside in your area my friend. I recommend planting if possible in partial shade. Till your soil to a depth of 8” as shampoo ginger tends to root deep and plant your rhizomes 8-10” apart at a depth of no more than 2” Rhizomes should sprout in 3-6 weeks, keep soil moist but not soggy at all times.
Hello! Love your video! Am I able to grow these indoors? If so, how would I go about that process. From what I’m gathering they thrive in a warm moist climate? I’m assuming I would need humidifiers and grow lights? Maybe even an indoor greenhouse/ grow tent or no? I live in the northeast so it’s dry and cool but we are heading into warmer weather and would love to see what is possible during the summer months. Thankyou!
Pinecone Shampoo Ginger can be grown indoors in containers but I highly recommend planting it outside if possible, and in a semi shaded location. If you absolutely must grow it inside I highly recommend a bright and sunny room and a large container (10-20) gallon container. Keep the soil moist but not soggy and fertilize with a liquid fertilizer such as miracle gro ect twice monthly. Thanks for watching this video my friend!
I have fallen in love with my pinecone shampoo ginger. Six pinecones so far but I replanted them. Praying they will do well. Florida sun is unrelenting 🤨🤔
Hi Desiree! I totally appreciate you stopping by and watching this video my friend! I too love this variety of ginger, they multiply so fast produce those awesome red Pinecone shaped blossom heads. I had issues with sunburn on mine last year so this season I planted them in this far more shady location next to my front porch and they are thriving! I wish you tremendous success growing yours and if they haven’t already sprouted and you have them in full sun, consider digging them up and planting them in a partially shaded area of your lawn or garden.
Definitely not for eating my brother, this variety produces a Pinecone shaped red blossom, very fragrant and can be used to make shampoo, skin moisturizers, and perfumes fallenSkys prepper, will send you a rhizome if you are interested in growing it up there.
Thanks for the video. 3 of these appeared most unexpectedly at the house I bought 2 years ago in Pensacola. The pinecone blossoms is what grabbed my attention when cleaning up from Hurricane Sally. Now I’m obsessed and want to propagate them, or maybe that happens on its own? Liked and subscribed. Cheers.
No need to propagate, if they are already in a semi shaded area just clean the area around then well and fertilize with an organic 14-10-10 granular fertilizer once in the spring and again around mid summer and they will multiply like rabbits lol, thanks for watching this video!
