      +kanimo24 I've never understood why people say "get off the hype train" because people always say shit like watch dogs is great, it's just a product of over "hypedness" even if it wasn't hyped it would still be a mediocre game. Saying that it has been overhyped isn't an excuse for a crap game

    I think the game would have been better if it were a linear experience instead of Open-World. More time could be spent on the level design and the gun effects.

    Ah I wish I could find it now but there was a reddit post about the railway system and how one of the people working on that part of the game wanted it to make more sense but Ubisoft wouldn't let them change it even though they had a huge amount of time before release.

      yeah it was something about they used to have the L-train taking 90 degree turns and it looked stupid, so they changed it when they delayed it but didn't take out the tracks, which is why that is still there.

    I just finished Watch Dogs for the first time since it came out. I tried playing it two times and I would immediately just forget about the game after the first 2 missions. It just didn't pull me in. So this time I was forced into playing it and it's surprisingly really good, once you get past all of what keeps you from playing it. Aiden gets enjoyable later as you grow attached to him. But there's so many parts of the game where you just want to facepalm. The buildboards, tv screens and radio talk show hosts talking about you, and naming you, then the game acting like you are still undercovered and noone knows your identity is puzzling.
    But anyways, the license soundtrack... my god it's horrible. It's like syncing your ipod and getting U2 free songs that you never asked for and wanted.

    Police do cruise the streets, though. You should add an annotation fixing that statement. Yes, they're extremely rare, and there is no foot patrols, but you do see cars from time to time. They are also marked on your radar as a typical car enemy (even though you're not wanted)

    • @Ularg7070
      @Ularg7070 10 років тому +6

      Doesn't really need an annotation fixing something that is barely changed. They don't pull over and try to stop criminals. And you said it yourself, they are rare. They are so rare that it could be forgiven to think there weren't any at all.

      Business isn't the problem, it's people. Businesses respond to supply and demand - they have to turn a profit or go out of business. The problem is people WANT unpassionate Ubisoft games and will defend them and businesses thus respond. In the end, it's up to the general audience as to whether we will receive revolutionary games or the same old, same old. Unfortunately, it does not seem like people will change, but there are rare occurrences. Square, a company just as bad as Ubisoft, finally saw the light when they saw people wanted games as good as Bravely Default and did not want games like Hitman: Absolution.

      I think a better term would be "Corporate" instead of business. You make a valid point, games always were a business. The difference being that the the people that used to create games generally were gamers that were unimpeded by corporate meddling and focus groups and anything else that comes with modern gaming caveats.
      There's a world of difference between the landscapes of the 80s and 90s and 2014.

      @chillinchum 9 років тому

      Scrustle I'm sure you've had a bunch of people tell you about business being necessary in some shape or another, so I'm not going to repeat all those points, that's unnecessary
      Business in general isn't ruining games: antiquated, ludicrous, and yes, sadly occasionally greedy Business !Practices! are ruining media in general, and quite possibly economies of entire countries, not just games.

    I bought this game and its DLC for 15€. The first day I played I was actually very pleased:
    - I really liked the city and how lived it felt, even more than Los Santos to be honest.
    - The story seemed ok, I mean it was another Ubisoft Revenge Plot™ nothing too bad nor too god. I think that It would've been better if Lena had been Aiden and Nicky's daughter and that they broke up after the toll the death of his daughter put on the relation but that's a personal opinion.
    - The driving was alright, it wasn't the boats of GTA IV nor the Formula 1 cars of GTA V.
    - The hacking was simple but fun to use and see.
    That was the first day but the more I played the less I liked the game due to all the chores it had. You see, I'm that kind of player that needs to complete everything he sees on the map or that has some way of tracking progress and that ruins Ubisoft games for me. It happened when I decided to give Assassin's Creed IV and Oddisey two chances to win me back: the first days I was enjoying myself but after that I was just scratching chores from a list.
    To complete the progression of one of the side missions you have to do 40 fixer contracts. 40! The game has 39 main missions! And that's not counting 15 gang hideouts, 20 crimes, 20 CToS breaches, 20 QR codes, 20 privacy invasions... these last three are specially bad since they have you running around looking at walls like an idiot searching for cameras and fuse boxes. When the gameplay is just ok, you need to give the player some context to actually care for what is happening, in Watch Dogs you have missions were Aiden says "this guy beat a woman, I'll make him pay for that" so you'd expect maybe some trashy dude and a couple of his friends, maybe he's from a gang or something but nope, the mission consists in ambushing a 5 car convoy full of guys with heavy military weapons and armor. Logic. He says he's a vigilante but most of the fixer contracts involve helping criminals. Three missions in the first act of the game revolve around finding a witness and making sure he doesn't reveal your identity, going as far as getting yourself arrested and thrown into the prison were the guy is being kept. Then you hear how the radio speaks about how "people seem to side with vigilante Aiden Pearce". So your identity isn't as secret I guess...
    I've completed all of the side content available at the moment in the game but just 7 main missions and I'm at 70% completition. What the fuck is this? Ubisoft needs to learn that 3 missions copy pasted 30 times each is not content is bloating a game with stuff that adds nothing to it.

      The Joker Its a cycle. They pump out a game with more radical ideas or a newer engine that notably changes the existing game, (AC1, AC3, Watch Dogs etc.), but its poorly executed and generally falls below expectations. Then they pull out a sequel with better writing, gameplay, and stability that is far superior to the game it is based off of (AC2, AC Black flag, likely the inevitable watch dogs sequel), due to feedback and more experience with the new engine. This is quickly becoming a trend where all new ip's and engines are pumped out as a beta test for the better games to come. However, this is slowly occurring in a downwards trend of overall quality, likely due to more vocal sharing of negative opinions and reviews, causing stockholders to become concerned and put more pressure on the company, which causes them to rush out the game/s, leading to a gradual overall decline in quality.

      You're not wrong man. It's a sad state of affairs. but, something will have to change (for better or worse) eventually. It's a shame that that CD Projekt Red is the rare exception with The Witcher 3 in how they treat consumers & develop/sell their game.

  • @zappandy
    @zappandy 9 років тому +5

    Aside from the splinter cell series (because I've never played it) has Ubisoft ever designed an actual rewarding stealth game? Isn't it sad that Bethesda designed a better stealth game? I'm not dismissing Bethesda, it's just that was never their area. Oh wait they've actually developed plenty of open world games and didn't see the need to do that for Dishonored. Ubisoft, if it weren't for Rayman Legends and Child of Light in these last years you would be the most uninspired AAA developer.

  • @WarMomPT
    @WarMomPT 10 років тому +3

    I never really noticed the complaint in games about upgrading anything via EXP, but now that you've pointed it out, it sticks out like a sore thumb. And the real shame is that it's so, so easy to get around - just add vendors.
    Take the Souls games for example. Your currency is what you exchange for goods and services but it's also your experience. How does the game get around this? By tying your use of souls to particular points. Need to ascend a weapon? Well, you have to go to a blacksmith - an appropriate blacksmith who has the appropriate ember, and the embers they accept match their personalities. Level up? Go to a bonfire, something that is kindled by the undead and hence has a special link to them. Or to the Maiden in Black or Emerald Herald, both of whom can manipulate souls.
    Vendors and NPCs, no matter how shoehorned, always can be used to justify (to some degree) exchanging points for improvements, it gives the game an internal logic. Big Boss has his R&D team, Spider-Man has comic book stores, XCOM soldiers have promotions. Even Dante has a justification in that red orbs are crystallised demon blood which has to be traded with the statues. Whereas Geralt, Aiden, and so many other open world protagonists just get really good at pulling things out of their ass.
    EDIT: Even the Elder Scrolls abandoned their way out of this trap! Until Oblivion, you levelled up after increasing your skills and the game explicitly says you go to sleep in order to rest and *reflect on what you've learned*. In Skyrim you just...pick a star even if you're in the middle of nowhere.

    Hey yo George! I argree with almost everthing you said. However, I got the game on the ps4, and a lot of the issues you had with controls, connectivity, and glitches never happened to me. The bullets reacted with the environment and the only glitch I ever encountered was an AI walking in circles during one mission, but that was it. I played the game on the hardest difficulty, and I found being stealthy was easyer then shooting it out. I think the big issue here is that, like a lot of multi plats these days, the devs put most of there effort into making it work best on consules. Also, pre ordering it gets you missions where you work with the hackergroup, so I think that part where you work with them near the end was going to make sence before they moved it to preorder exclusive. I agree with everything elce you said though. (Except you pronounced Aiden wrong. Its A-den not I-den.)

    I can understand the complaint of "what's my motivation for running around and collecting all these things?!?" complain in open world games but I have never once asked myself that.. I do it because it's there and if I don't do EVERYTHING.. i will never finish the main story. It's totally psychological on my part and it's also a problem. I spent like 10 hours in The Witcher 3 collecting plants before I convinced myself I had to stop because I had several hundred of each common plant... I just instinctively ran around collecting things that showed up on my minimap. My point is, I never have trouble caring about collecting all the stuff because I have a psychological need to collect all the stuff. It's not OCD, I hate it when idiots say they have OCD when they don't. My need to collect all that stuff doesn't interfere with my life.. I can function just fine without doing so. But I play games to decompress and the repetitive action of collecting pointless virtual shit does that for me. funny because I hate having pointless shit laying around in real life. I could fit all of my stuff minus my furniture in my car.

    This game symbolizes everything wrong with the Triple A industry right now. It's a game that doesn't want to be a game, it wants to have a gripping story and have that filmic look to draw in the casual audience. But... it's Ubisoft, so it still is _made_ to be a game by tacking on all the other stuff we've all done before in Far Cry and Assassin's Creed. It's just soo soo sad, it's at it's most fun when it's gamey, and it tries so hard to not be. For some of the missions I felt like I could see the bored expressions and understand the devs as they made the maps and side missions.
    It's a game that tries to be everything, and succeeds, but everything is half assed. These games need to choose what they want to be. An openworld sandbox game with little to no emphasis on story, such that players can either A) discover it for themselves or B) just make one up themselves. Or, a linear stealth game similar to Deus Ex. Games need to be more gamey, I get really REALLY angry when I can sense that the game desperately wants to be _The Wire_ or some other thing. Those are other types of media, other genres, they _aren't games_. STOP DOUBLE DIPPING. I want to play a goddamn game. It's sad, and honestly, it wreaks of insecurity and attempts to justify gaming as something to be respected. It get's no respect from me when I'm trying to enjoy something and I sense the developers are ashamed of what they're working on.
    And finally... PC gaming. Oh PC gaming. I play on PC and console. They both serve their purpose. But the whole "PC master race" just blows up like the Hindenburg when confronted with reality and the first minute of this review. TB can bang on about good PC ports from now until the end of time (and he should! They should be playable/functional!) but it never ever seems to happen! So, what's that middle aged dad supposed to do when he get's home from work and finally has time to play the game he's been waiting weeks for? When he's eaten dinner, spent time with the wife, put the kids to bed and finally has a few hours to himself? Watch Dogs on PC? Come the fuck on. He attempts to get it running on his master race machine... to no avail. Or, he can run it on a console and be playing the first night, while suffering through the dreaded 30fps... ooohh no!!!! That's it. That's the argument. That's all the justification people need to buy a console. It's what the majority of those 4 million people thought when they purchased the game.
    Great review, George. Seriously, great job.

    I remember the extreme hype over AC3. A lot of the problems you identified for Watch Dogs REALLY applies to AC3. Identity crisis, a convoluted plot that also is also split, a lack of polish in some areas and a huge amount of polish in other areas. It all feels like the negative side effects of huge budget games expected to be perfect.

    whats sad, is even though this game was created around the idea of using a cellphone for everything.. i usually approached every situation guns blazing and taking full advantage of the cover system instead of hiding in a corner and hoping from camera to camera to get the objective (unless it made me, of course.. there are a couple of missions where they forced me to sit through camera feed after camera feed, or needing to unlock doors with a switch that was 20 stories above me and i didnt feel like trying to climb those 20 stories)

    Is it possible that the gunplay is way better with a Dualshock 4 over a mouse and keyboard? I know that its a sign of laziness and bad devs and GTA5 free aim isn't exactly the greatest gunplay to compare and contrast with when I first played it but I was getting genuine enjoyment out of the gunplay and felt it made for pretty decent stealth/action gameplay.

    Great review. Very funny and so true. I personally only enjoyed the story parts with lucky quin. Everything else was boring or utterly predictable.
    The best part of the game for me is the Online Hacking mode and for that you really have to give some praise for most of the level and city design with its multiple levels and hiding possibilities.

    Wow. When you said to me that the glitches in Watch Dogs were bad, you weren't kidding... well, that just seems to be a thing now for big budget triple-A games nowadays. And also, great review, George! This review really helped with my temptation to buy this game on Steam, and telling me that it was a bug-riddled mess also helped, too.
    Absolutely brilliant, well-written review that was both insightful, as it was surprising. And it also had a neat message compacted into this review; never but triple-A video-games at launch on PC. Keep in mind that the problems shown were just PC-port problems and not console problems, and if there are also problems on console, they probably would've been already sorted out by the time I own this game on the PS4.
    And if you're reading this, George, I hope you get that review copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order, mate! Good luck!

    Weird. I got some pretty terrible mouse-lag, but after I switched to my gamepad I didn't have any issues whatsoever with the PC version, other than what I would say is probably less than fantastic optimisation, but I'm not too bothered by having to run a game on 'high' instead of 'ultra'. I haven't experienced a single issue launching the game or had any crashes.
    I mean, the game was certainly a complete thematic mess, but I didn't really have any technical issues.

    Good review and your points are correct, although the shooting mechanics are bad with a mouse, they're really good with a controller. Personally I liked it more than GTAV, all of the on foot mechanics were better and the missions felt more open than linear in comparison, kinda ironic since R* are supposedly the kings of open world gaming.
    Anyway, seems like you placed heavy emphasis on the context behind its setting and storytelling, which is fair enough, personally I'm just enjoying the gameplay, but I agree with the bugs, glitches, lack of polish and cliche story that lacks cohesion.

    I started worrying about Watch Dogs when they showed more and more trailers with Aiden getting into firefights, and then seeing that he could carry a ridiculous arsenal with him at all times. I was hoping it would be more like Sleeping Dogs, where having a gun was the exception, not the rule (although even that kind of messed it up towards the end with increasing numbers of huge shootouts).

    It's mainly due to the fact that these Triple AAA games get a ridiculous amount of marketing that people bash this game. This game was plastered over various gaming sites for months as they claimed it to be the next gen experience we were waiting for. The same thing happened to Titanfall and nowadays no one talks about it because they got bored of the multiplayer only experience so quickly. We get that the game wasn't a bad one, but we were told numerous times by various sites, magazines, and video game reviewers that this was to be the killer app that every gamer must have. This was gonna be like Halo to Xbox, Smash Bros Melee to Gamecube, Last of Us for PS3, and what did we ultimately get? A good sandbox stealth game that deserves maybe a 7.5 or an 8 at most.

    Yeah, the licensed music REALLY sucked save for Alice Cooper's "Dangerous Tonight". I also felt that more could have been done with the parkour to make traversal more fluid, like running diagonally into a wall to help give a boost to climb a fence or something. Honestly they would have been better off making a game with a better "morality" meter or something. I really wish I could direct the sequels to games like this that show potential and that I really like, but are also plagued with flaws and oversights.

  • @datacentre81

    I think I can explain the lack of patrolling cops. As you play the game, it becomes clear that security cameras are EVERYWHERE and the CTOS system is designed to detect possible crimes on its own through all of those cameras. In a world like that, it makes sense for the cities budget to be allocated away from manned patrol cars.

    I felt the same conflict in myself. It was not as polished as promised with very little advancement in the genre, however I still enjoyed playing the campaign and the multiplayer is fun, including the use of the Ctos App to play against my friends.
    We played the game in order to add to our own channel content and player requested reviews on next gen, especially with the delay of ESO on consoles, so there were no expectstions or hype at HQ about this game. For us, this turned out to be a fun game to play, with better graphics than its GTA counterpart on old gen consoles.

    The only label song I liked from this game was "Help Is On The Way" by Rise Against, so much so it's now one of my favourite songs, but besides that, I played this game for the story. After tgat was done, I played ita little more for the online and the collectables but really only as a GTA replacement, so after getting GTA V, I have yet to touch this game again. It's gotten me some Uplay points to use on Far Cry 4, but Uplay isn't even that good so now I can only entertain the idea that I now have a golden Desert Eagle in Watch Dogs, even though I hate golden guns in general (Call of Duty made me realize my dislike of golden guns very quickly). I only pull out the GDE to show it off to other players, like, "Hey, look what I have" only to re-equip the P-9mm.

    Ubisoft did the same thing with Far Cry 3. Exhausting the most interesting villain half way through the game then dumping the player back into the world to pointlessly wrap up loose ends. To the credit of Watch Dogs Far Cry did it far worse because the secondary villain in that game didn't get much of an introducing to the player and it felt like we were killing that man because the game said so not much for story purposes.

    I was/am very conflicted about this game. I still can't tell if the main character is supposed to be a good guy or not and I'm about as anti-surveillance state, pro-vigilantism as a person gets.
    It does sound like two games sandwiched together. With the gameplay as bad as you're saying, I'll probably give this a pass.
