As a musician, I find Mary's voice to be incredibly good, particularly given this is a live recording. Voices age, but Mary still cuts it. Does Paul McCartney sound the same as he did in the 60's. Hell no! But do we still appreciate his performances today? Hell yes! Mary is a treasure and I applaud her for sharing her talent with us today.
And the moral is, if you know Mary Weiss is going to be at the gig, for god's sake download some motorcycle revving sounds for your keyboard just in case. She did great. Now go and listen to the original and realize the great timing the Shangri-las had. Thanks Mary!

Mary is an icon! She doesn't even like performing this old song any more. You can see in her face she's doing it in a jokey way and just pleasing her fans who demand to hear her sing this classic. She'd be the first to tell you it's a young girl's song and doesn't suit now & she knows that her voice has matured and deepened as everyone's does. So you should listen to her solo album and hear the modern stuff she's doing. She sounds awesome and the new songs are just perfect for her voice now!

This is fantastic! This revives memories of my sisters' carport dance parties. I am about a decade younger than this lady, but this is integral to the soundtrack of my childhood.
Mary was 59 years old when she performed this song. She's not going to have that 16 year old voice as many of do not. Not everyone can perform at the level of Debbie Harry at age 60. The Shangri Las really had some great music in the 60's and I would ask that everyone dive in and discover their music.This was a great group that had a number one hit in a time when musical competition was very high.
Keep in mind the equipment being used here, could also play into anything that sounds off. You can here a bit of echo, and her voice at times sounds like there's a piece of cardboard between her and the mic. I would put any imperfections on the electronic side.
