A lesser known reason they stopped asking or requiring us Sephora employees to wear makeup was a lawsuit. A whole bunch of Sephora employees on the East coast sued for compensation for time spent doing makeup before clocking in since it was part of the uniform. There are larger stores that offer up to 30 minutes paid makeup time since they require a full face as part of the uniform. The rest of the stores are warned not to ask it of employees to avoid owing payment.

Wow I wondered if something like that happened! I worked at a JCP years ago that had a Sephora in it and I remember the girls always doing touch ups in the break room. One day I asked them how they had time to do such dramatic looks every day and was shocked to learn that they HAD to! Now about 7 years later I walk into a Sephora at Kohl's and notice none of the employees wearing a full face or no makeup at all. No red/black dresses either.

@@Barb6106 they do enjoy it. However their makeup takes 1-2 hours to do especially when they do full face and dramatic makeup. So being “required” to do that basically means you are required to “work” before work. Especially since they do that every day. I would always ask my daughter “whatcha doing today?” But ……she would lovingly remind me how long it takes her so she would mostly do “natural” look and only the weekends or days she felt inspired she did crazy exciting stuff!

OMG this brings back memories! I worked at a prestigious department store and had a customer I knew, so I walked her over to the La Mer counter. She said Oh have you tried this? It’s so good. And she slathered their cream all over my arm, which I happen to already know I’m ALLERGIC to. I was so freaked out I just stammered an excuse and practically ran to the bathroom to wash it off. She put so much on I had to wash my arms up to my elbows!!! Just narrowly escaped a huge allergic skin reaction.

    • @janesays1278
      @janesays1278 Рік тому +23

Ahh, that’s so scary! I had a similar experience where I was visiting a friend in California, and he dropped me off at a mall so I could kill some time while he worked. Anyway, as soon as I waled in, this guy grabbed my arm and immediately smeared this goo on it, and he told me it was an exfoliating peel. I have super sensitive reactive skin, and was so upset. I tried to get away from him, and he yelled at me that I was missing out on free product or whatever he said, it was just super aggressive. I didn’t see a bathroom to wash my arm off, so I walked into the nearest shop, which was The Body Shop, and the amazing sales clerk brought out water and a towel and was so nice to me. She said that they’d complained to the mall og were about the guy who worked at that skincare kiosk, and that he regularly did that same thing to other customers. I just think people should have the common sense to ask if it’s okay to touch people or apply a product to them before they go ahead and do it.

OhMG that happened to me as well except the guy curled my 6 year old's hair her dad wanted to punch him in the face.
And he was so rude about it, saying "she has pretty hair just making it prettier" I stepped into he's space which is hard since I'm like 5" and my head got to he's chest.
So 😅 I tilted my head up looked at the guys and said "and what dumb beauty school taught you to put heat on hair without protecting it first?"
He answered with "I didn't curl a lot Karen" And he walked away, calling me a f*ing Karen!!! HE CURLED MY SIX YEAR OLD'S HAIR!!!
So, lol 🙈 I yelled "you're lucky I'm not a Karen or I'll have curled your f*ing lips fool" or something like that.
At this point my husband was dragging me away cause my daughter was crying.

As a current Sephora employee I can say we really do be hiring anyone these days and having them do your color match. I'm also fed with with managers forcing us to sell Multi World(makeup+skincare, skin+hair) so atleast 2 items from 2 categories and call it out on the headset to track it. They would personally call you out on the headset if you haven't sold any MWs. It's not even commission based and we don't get bonuses every month for it either. It's frustrating

For me it’s the services. Once your consultation goes over 10/15 min it’s like “that’s a service”. I mean why? Why charge them to have an LBA do the same thing I’m doing? But we never call out people who aren’t doing MW. It’s annoying but I enjoy challenging myself

One day I got a messaged while I was at my salon job asking where I was and I told them I already told them 2 weeks ago I would be working another job and I got chewed out by the other LBA’s and that’s when I made the decision to leave Sephora completely! I live in a small city and there's only one shop that has their makeup displayed like in sephora. I used to go every day after my pay day, cause I really like makeup and would stop by to see what's new there.
Every time, some employees and the security guard would be watching me, it would bother me a bit, but I thought they were like that with everyone.
One day, I'm wearing a huge shoulder bag and the security guard was following me more closely than usual. I stopped to check some skincare and I looked forward and there's three teenagers putting some KVD concealers and lipsticks in their baggy pants pockets, meanwhile, the guard was looking at me.
I walked to him and said " if you really want to catch a criminal, go look at the cameras and walk around other people, not only the black, cause you're getting robbed atm."
I walked to the cashier and said that was my last time shopping there, that I wouldn't spend none of my salary in there cause as a 33yo woman who works and every pay day visits the store, I expected them to already know my face and not be profiling people like that.
Nowadays I buy everything online or wait till I go to the capital to visit the shops.

I really appreciate this one. I would go into Sephora, and especially before now, I’d be so uncomfortable talking to anyone or interacting that anybody could ask if I’d like help. I’d become awkward and say “No, but thank you so much.” It’s really frustrating that I’m out here pushing people away because of severe social anxiety. Meanwhile, people are being awful terrible homophobes. Also, I would always go in stores barefaced. It just made sense so I could hold up products and see what it was going to do with my natural coloring. The one time I said okay you could help me, she didn’t really listen to what I was saying or my preferences. She was like “Do you like what I did here?” And I said yes because even if I hadn’t, I wasn’t going to be rude. She was like “it’s over here. This is what it is and how you can use it.” So it just kind of soured the experience for me. It wasn’t about my preferences. It was about she had on and if I wanted to buy that. Then, my best friend in high school loved Sephora. So the first time I went with her, when we got there she was like “And we can do our makeup”. I was like “Whoa. I don’t have the money for that.” She was like, “You don’t actually buy it. You just use the samples.” I was like “oh. Ok” and thinking. “Holy f that’s gross.” I couldn’t escape her that time so she put stuff on my face. But every time after that, if she’d be by this brand’s foundation, I’d be over by Perfume. Then if she was by eyeshadow, I’d be at lipstick. And I just was elsewhere so she couldn’t put the very dried out samples on my face. I had forgotten about that until you were talking about it.

If you want to try putting makeup on others ask that friend to plan a day where you can practice with them and learn. You can find videos and things and figure out how to do it and if you mess up at least your friend isn't going out with it that day. You can have makeup remover handy for when you need to restart. I don't know that much about makeup but I know setting aside time to practice on a face other than your own can help you learn.
It kinda reminds me of when you draw something like anime characters all the time and are comfortable with it, not trying anything else but when you try drawing something like my little pony, or some other cartoon you may learn things you can apply to drawing anime characters to make it even better... (I draw and paint a lot so I tried using that as an example)

Being 2023, its wild to me to think back to a time where we were really such a closed minded primitive species lol I did hair for 7 years from 18 to 24 back in 2007-2014 and I stayed in the same salon mostly the whole time and my best friend at the time Jack worked with me. The way people either exclusively wanted him or refused to sit in his chair solely based on being a gay male in the salon was so bizarre to me. He is such a good funny caring person I could never understand anyone not gravitating to him. We've come a long way as a society but we have a long ways to go! Thank you guys for sharing your experiences! I loved the chemistry and flow of the two of you together!❤

Omg, your story about the lady rubbing primer on your face unlocked a fucking memory lol; so my first job was at Walgreens, I was 16, and after a few months I was working behind the beauty counter as a "consultant" and there was this one regular who was this middle-aged white woman, she would come and try all the perfumes, and I swore to God she was a vampire or something. She had this drawling southern accent and would always give me the _creepiest_ smile when she talked to me, and like leaned over the counter to talk to me. So if you've ever been in a Walgreens, you've probably seen the wall of beauty products, those items come randomly dumped in these big totes and you have to sort them and stock them individually, so I would often whole ass sit down in front of the wall to stock things. At the time I was dying my hair a lot with tons of different colors. And one day I'm sitting down and stocking these products, and this woman comes up to me and starts talking to me, and then suddenly I feel hands in my hair, and she starts *PETTING MY HAIR* and goes "you always have such pretty hair" and I just kinda laughed it off, and then also had to go hide in the back after, and then there was a few times after where I would literally go hide in back everytime she came in.

This was so insightful! In my town in Australia we had our first Sephora (ever in the town) open in 2017. I never wore makeup until last year (2022) and as a woman I felt soo embarrassed that I didn’t know anything about makeup at all. But the girls who worked at Sephora did not judge me at all. There was an international American student working there and she was the most helpful person ever! I was so nervous and overwhelmed and I said, “I’m really starting from ground 0 here, I know absolutely nothing and I’m a bit embarrassed.” She was sooooo sweet and got me all the basics I needed, colour matched me a foundation, picked colours that would go well with my skin tone. She helped me for well over an hour. I kept apologising saying wow I must be taking up so much of your time at work. And she said “no I love doing this!” and you could really tell she did love it. I was so grateful for her help and I have since fallen in love with playing around with makeup on myself. I’ve been back since and every girl I’ve talked to has been lovely but also my town in general has pretty chill vibes.

I absolutely loved this episode. It is so interesting listening to your stories about working at Sephora. In the early 90's, when I was in my young 20's, i worked at a beauty supply store. It was a bit more high end. It was in Dallas, Texas. I encountered so many different kinds of customers. The store I worked at was where all the new money people were. I filled in a few times at another location that was closer to the heart of Dallas, and that is where the old money was. The difference in customers was fascinating, to say the least.
I can't believe that women would actually say they didn't want their make-up applied by a man. Where do they thing Max Factor came from??
I am sad to hear you had to deal with homophobic people.
It is clear that both of you know your skills. Much love to you both. ❤

I have to thank you for the real discussion about varying levels of knowledge in Sephora today. I was always so confused by how color matching was so off. I generally will come in as a clean palette to allow the associate to see what my issues are. The level of knowledge has really suffered. I’m so sad, since I’m “well seasoned” and tik tok trends don’t work on mature skin. I have had more insight from watching you and I am so grateful.

It’s funny. When I worked for MAC people would seek out male artists and want their help. We had the odd a-hole but most of the time they wanted the guys help if they were on counter. So I always kept male freelancers on speed dial. 😅
MAC just recently went over to where all their counters in partnered locations being commission. I believe it only used to be Nordstrom but now it’s everyone. At least in my region we weren’t commission until about three-ish years ago.
We also had to have at least 6 products on our face and if there was a new collection, most of it had to be from that. We were also required to change our makeup based on our location. To look like our clients. The idea being it would draw them in if someone looked like them.
We also had to be certified to do makeup but same. They throw you to the wolves and have you do them before certification. Y’all had 15 more minutes for a makeup than we did. We had 30 start to finish. Greeting to check out.

Most disgusting thing seen I’ve seen people do with testers when I was a Sephora employee, two incidents stick out:
    - a lady took her shoes off and painted her toenails at our nail polish stand
    - a woman covered in open oozing sores did a full face of makeup using the testers. We threw them all out after she left 😬
