  • Beautiful and Bothered with Johnny Ross and Kevin Banzhaf | Episode 15
This week's episode of Beautiful and Bothered is all about the future of beauty! We discuss where the makeup industry is headed, including a much-needed end to toxic influencer culture and the lack of accountability from influencers like Jeffree Star, James Charles, and Jaclyn Hill. The misogynistic double standards female influencers face, the myths about "clean" beauty products, and brands focus on quality over quantity. They also discuss Johnny's traumatic experience flying with United Airlines, Patti Lupone dragging Kim Kardashian and Ryan Murthy, and Meghan Trainor's "f*ck teachers" controversy!

My pet peeve with "clean beauty", as someone with very sensitive skin, aside from claiming not to have something in their formulas like fragances or whatever when it's not true, is how difficult they make to find the complete list of ingredients, the real one, with everything. They hide it so much that you almost have to go to the deep web to find if their freaking mosturizer actually has whatever ingredient you're sensitive to on it.

I’m so glad you actually said what James Charles did. He sent nude photos to minors, that’s an actual crime and can put you on a registry. So many people water it down and that’s not fair to his victims. I also don’t believe for a second that his influencer friends aren’t still connected and engaging with him off camera/social media. Who decides to promote his make up line will show exactly where their morals stand.

As someone who has multiple allergies, I get so irritated at being told something is “natural” or “clean.” I quit using my Mary Kay products that I loved because they were making me sneeze to death. And then I had to practically come to blows with the sales lady because she kept texting me that their products were “natural” and she wouldn’t leave me alone. I don’t care lady! Wow how awful. I completely agree as a fellow allergy of whatever sufferer. I used Mary Kay in the early 90’s and it was my saving grace! Now?? No way. I have had chemical rashes and contact dermatitis and this has suddenly happened with a lot of brands. I used to be able to use L’Oréal mascaras no problem. Now? A for sure visits to my eye dr or dermatologist. I just don’t get it. I’m tired of the lenient laws on marketing in the USA and since pandemic I feel like they really degraded their products with very cheap cheap filler chemicals and irritants. Many of my normal skin friends are now suddenly having issues too. Something weird is going on. I hope you find something you love. ❤

I’m so glad you guys dig into the “clean” product craze. I had no idea what goes into products until my now toddler developed severe eczema at 8 months old. A lot of the “clean” stuff was so much more problematic for him and even included actual allergens like nuts and soy. It’s been a huge learning experience about that labeling means nothing and you really have to dig into ingredients. It’s definitely made me more scrutinize my own products just in terms of not buying gimmicky stuff and looking for good solid formulas that perform at a good price.

If you have a multiple stop trip, you can’t make a change to a single stop without destroying the entire reservation and paying THOUSANDS of dollars to cancel and rebook (just call the airline in this case). There’s absolutely no concept of customer service, overbooking the flights in standard industry practice and they can just bump you for any reason, the staff is completely unsupported and untrained. It’s absolutely horrendous.

I had an airline try to refuse to let me onboard with my dog to Hawai'i when I had all our paperwork both faxed to airline and Hawaii's quarantine station, we already were approved by both. We had already been approved for re-entrance to Hawai'i by the quarantine station a long time prior to our flight.... I have never been one to make a fuss-but I basically told them no, we were already approved by both, and we were getting on the plane. We had been to Hawai'i before, he was a service dog, he was approved by the quarantine station for re-entrance, and we are getting on that plane for work -just because they were uneducated on the process wasn't our fault, and I sure as hell wasn't missing work for their error😂😂😂. And we were totally fine.
I think it's sad that the airline employees don't have education on BIG things like that- and like in your case, something that should have been basic knowledge. The cross the fingers and shrug 🤷🏽‍♀️ had me dying laughing lol what a tw@t move. 😢😂😢😅

TikTok has its own toxicity outside of influencers. TT kind of convinces people (often underage or young enough that they have a limited income) to think they need one holy grail product after the other. When I was 14 I saw makeup trends and products in my YM or seventeen magazine 10x a year, and in movies and TV on occasion and that was it. Now people can binge dozens of “products you must have” in a short chunk of time.

I actually wrote a speech in uni about the term "cruelty-free," as a person who supports the movement. While there is a general consensus on the criteria (by way of some organizations), there is no legal definition of CF. I learned a lot about the legalities of labels like this and it's equally interesting as it is frustrating. I know for a fact that the hesitancy to criminalize animal cruelty in the US specifically has everything to do with our good friend capitalism 🤡

Meghan Trainor bugged me from the moment she released "All about that bass"... in that song she's totally talking down on people who are thinner, have small boobs and/or butts and stupidly saying "boys want a little more booty to hold at night" like seriously...?! First of all, no one's body should look a certain way for a partner and second of all, why talk shit on skinny people when we've been trying so hard the past years to put all body sizes as equal? That makes you no better than the people/magazines/media who (used to) fat shame people.

That they come back and like and respond as much as possible is incredibly heartwarming ❤

I loved the instructional lookbooks Estèe Lauder and Lancôme put out for the holidays. It gave the basics to a few staples, which I still use as guidelines to make classic, basic, but bold looks with whatever colours I feel like, and it works because the technique is solid. I do wish I could do some of the artsy looks, but hooded eyes with little space between crease and brow make it challenging, though makeup artists like Robert Welsh doing tutorials help quite a bit toward working with what I have.
It's so funny about people saying which brand started the lip oil trend, because Sephora had pigmented lip oils in a test tube looking component back in 2015, and crickets. Nobody was talking about them. It was AMAZING, and I bought so so many tubes of it(Bubbly Grenadine) because it was so hydrating my lips were a healthy plump without using irritating ingredients to do it, and a light wash of colour as a bonus. It absorbed quickly leaving just the tiniest flush.
They d/c it, and now everyone and their cousin is putting one out, but they're more like pick a card, any card: hybrid oil infused glosses, sticky tacky not oily super glossy lip glosses, or no pigment to speak of lip oils that feel greasy.
I like Colourpop doing tons of releases, because they are always working on formulas, and they're inexpensive to try. They also seem to be listening to fan feedback, and fixing products that need it, making palettes refillable/easier to depot, or not making palettes one matte, one shimmer/metallic, one glitter colour, and the rest neutrals in a monochrome palette, but all shades in the same hue.
I'm a bit more old-fashioned, as in, if I like a foundation, I'll use it forever, or until they discontinue it after thirty years for foundation trends nobody wants and fifty shades of not Olive when Olive was your niche.
My one time flying with United was a nightmare(they tried to force my special needs kiddo to take a different flight, only he was five, and I paid for assigned seats, so I told them to pound sand, and went through six hours of hell to get a flight they wouldn't separate us on), so now it's American Airlines or Southwest.

I fell victim to being influenced into buying only "clean" beauty when I was younger. It wasn't until I started going to college earning a degree in science that I started to view the world with a grain of skeptism and learned the term "clean" means absolutely nothing and is up to the company to decide😂🤦‍♀️ But you know what's really ironic? So many of these beauty brands will be marketed as "clean", but still have the audacity to use ingredients that are technically "natural" but are still INCREDIBLY problematic. Like did you know that majority of mica (the mineral ingredient that gives many products their shimmer) is largely mined for using child labor? Yes, CHILD LABOR. I think most people would agree that's pretty despicable, and highly doubt most people would consider that "clean" to say the least. So in this case, I would personally consider synthetic mica that I know has been formulated in a lab without the use of child labor to be more "clean" than the naturally-occurring and questionably-sourced version. But as long as there's no definition to "clean", these companies get to keep getting away with this.

I’m going to preface this by saying: I love me a Drag Queen, I really, really do, I have always had every admiration for the looks they create.
Seriously? Wow. Beautiful, dazzling, artistic and incredible. I love it, get ready, get gorgeous and shake what the good Lord gave you.
However, as a middle-aged woman, I don’t usually choose to emulate Drag hair or makeup styles - I work for a charity! Arriving to work in a full cabaret look wouldn’t go over too well 😂.
Thank you so much for this from 🇬🇧.
Most respect for speaking up about all of the beauty drama. It was so hateful.
I do not want a side-order of racism, sexism, ageism etc, etc with my contouring tutorial.
A big thank you too for shining a light on the sexism in the industry - which goes both ways. I don’t care about the gender of the person applying my makeup. I do care about their ability to select appropriate products for my face, and to apply those products in a way that makes me look good. Particularly if they pass on hints and tips.
As a consumer, I want to know about the products I’m putting on my face; skincare and makeup, how it is being applied and why.
Another thank you for your honesty about the myth of ‘clean’ beauty. It is a nonsense, dreamt up by marketing departments to play on the latest socio-political trends.
If you are a lovely person (and you both are), please do tell me about your life. A little insight is a good thing.
The hatred on some channels is definitely not something that interests me, happily, this is not you.
Your approach makes a refreshing, entertaining and informative change.
Please keep doing what you’re doing, if you can’t already tell, I’m a fan.

Our laws are so stringent in the U.K. regarding food, animal feed, skincare and make up and so I’d advise sticking to U.K. brands. Even items not considered ‘clean’ would never add eg fomaldihide as quite simply it is banned like thousands of other products as it is harmful. I don’t understand why the USA Govt seem quite happy for their population to be poisoned, I mean whoever thought up dunking chicken in chlorine would be a good thing to consume must be mad!. The other bit of advice is that the shorter the ingredient list, the less shite is in it to fill it out ok. Good luck 🤞🏻

    • @kellygreengables3936

Jsyk, it's not always what ingredients used but the quality of it and how much. So, clean beauty isn't inherently better than "non-clean" beauty. And clean is an unregulated marketing term. To start, I suggest looking at something like the ingredient readers/glossaries on the EWG or Paula's Choice websites.

    • @Bubblies005
      @Bubblies005 Рік тому

@@kellygreengables3936 I know it’s often a marketing buzzword. Even still beauty products that don’t contain those bad chemicals tend to be harder to work with and harder to find in the US. I think I’m just better off paying customs for safer makeup that probably works better than what they sell in the US. 🙃

    About the active ingredients percentage:
People looking for specific actives need to know what percentage they SHOULD come in. Example : Adapalene is effective at 0.1%, Salicylic acid at 1-2% so these would always be towards the end of the ingredients lists, but would still be effective. However other actives need to be at 10%,20%, 30% etc.
Honestly, now with brands like The Ordinary and others who actually state the percentage on the packaging, i don't bother with other brands that just stick the latest buzzy ingredient on the list. I need to know how much of it is in there. Oh and if something says it's "infused" with whatever i just imagine it sitting in the same room as that magic ingredient for a while 😁

Additionally, I’m on the part where you guys talk about social media platforms essentially ruining the content you long form creators put out, listening to it sounds almost like IG and all the rest operate like a MLM..it’s like you can be spending every last second of time or last dollar to your name to get an amazing video up but if it doesn’t fit their algorithm bull crap it’s like oh well try again next time 🙄 it’s like there’s no rhyme or reason as to why certain content goes viral and some flop. (Or there is but we haven’t been let it in on the secret) They want everyone to work their asses off posting so the app never lacks content but only so many will be seen/ make it to the top 🫤 something about that business model just reminds me of when I was selling paparazzi jewelry. Invested so much into that company and I was lucky if I broke even at the end of it. Highly recommend NEVER doing that lol

To specify about the buzzword fragrance-free debate: so it's actually "unscented" vs "fragrance-free". Unscented means there's still fragrance in it, but it's probably low on the ingredient list. Fragrance-free actually means there's no fragrance whatsoever in the list. This is what I've understood from watching videos from dermatologists and estheticians breaking down ingredient lists.
