    9:35 I unfortunately work in a supermarket, and every time I see potato waffles that song comes into my head. Every single time. The power of advertising, eh??!!

    Advertisements were so much better back in the day, so much so that they forever stuck in your mind and instantly transport you back in time whenever you see or hear them again.
    Contrast that to the advertisements we are now bombarded with. They are about as individual as a Dalek or a Borg and as memorable as the peas you had with your potato waffles 40 years ago.

    A very young-looking Lewis Macleod and Peter Serafinowicz in that Batchelors Super Noodles ad at 11:29. However, as they both voiced characters in _Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace_ , licking those plates and putting them back in the cupboard is _not_ the most disgusting or shameful thing either of them has done... 😜😆

It's said there were 42 adverts featuing this OXO family, and I had previously scoured youtube and found 35 of them, but this wasn't one of the ones I had found. Maybe I should put together a playlist of what I've already found and see if anyone can find (or at least recall) the other six?

    80s birds eye - birds eye potato waffles are waffley versatile. Grill'em,bake'em,fry'em,eat them. They're waffley versatile. 2020's birds eye - you've been cooking them wrong. You should toast them. 🤷

    That sandwich spread looks genuinely stomach-turning 🤮 But I could definitely go a potato waffle right about now...
    In relation to that, I was talking to a friend just a couple of days ago about how insipid and character-free most modern ads are (and that's definitely not just the nostalgia talking), and one big reason has to be swapping jingles for songs, with Birds Eye Potato Waffles being one I specifically mentioned. It seems rather pointless to just licence commercial music, because it has no association with the brand, and ten minutes later you may remember hearing the song but probably won't remember where. Whereas a good jingle will live rent-free in viewers' heads, potentially forever, and always have the chance of popping into their mind on a random afternoon and immediately causing them to think of the brand. Jingles: they're waffle-y versatile...

    • @RetroSteveUK
      @RetroSteveUK  Рік тому +3

      I agree about the songs. I often come away from an advert with a song in my head, but no idea what they were advertising.

    • @El-Ritmo
      @El-Ritmo Рік тому +1

      @@RetroSteveUK Yup, that's about the size of it. They might work within the 30 - 60 seconds of the ad to create or suggest a specific mood or feeling, but it won't last. There are exceptions of course, but a song's just not going to be attached to a product or a brand, it stands alone as its own thing. (Another exception may be re-wording commercial songs: less Donovan's _Mellow Yellow_ here, but definitely the Vitalite ads or Colgate Blue Minty Gel.)

      @MrDannyDetail Рік тому +1

      It's small enough to cook through, doesn't turn to mush, and adds both colour and the feeling (or should that be illusion?) that the pizza is healthy. Green veg tends not to fair well on a pizza, so other veg/fruit tends to be used.
